Trade Hass Now?
Does anyone else think we should trade Hasselbeck now? Don't get me wrong, I love everything Hass has done for this franchise, but I for one think it is time to move on. Give him a shot somewhere else. Unless we turn in to the first half of 2009 Broncos, I don't see us seriously competing within the next two years. However, I think if we trade Hass now and get a mid round pick or two in return it may help us compete sooner. Bottom line, we don't have enough time to build around Hass, he doesn't have that many years left (If he even has anything left now). It would be better to cut ties with him now and build from scratch. I would hate to build around him and get good just in time for him to retire and then the rest of team would have to build around a new QB again. It would be better to start now.
I may be on an Island here but I like the Whitehurst trade. I think we may have been able to lower the price a bit after the Cardinals took Anderson and the only real competition for Whurst was out of the picture, but I think he has the intangibles it takes to be a good QB. I also think this frees us up a bit to re-look a trade for Marshall. John mentioned in one of his pieces that if we were to take Marshall now he would be out of his prime before our quarterback of the future hit his stride. With Whurst here now why don't we trade for him and let the two create a chemistry that could lead to something special.
I am looking forward to next year because for the first time in five years we actually have some substantial change to look forward too, many unknowns. 2005 was our lone incredible year, every year since then has been rather status quo. I know we made the playoffs the next two years after the superbowl run but that was more a tribute to the other teams in our division and not us. I think with a strong armed QB and possibly a game changing WR, and a new attitude other than status quo within the franchise, we have some bright days ahead. My only wish is the rest of the fanbase can take a step back and try not to get so bent out of shape and look at this thing as a glass half empty.
Oh yeah... If I had two wishes, I would wish the Tapp trade never happened! Other than that though the glass is half full!

Not for another 4th round pick
If you could get, say a 3rd then yes. Or, if they decide to draft a QB in the top 2 rounds, then I’d say let the two new additions compete, and get what you can for Hasselbeck.
So, Yes, but with conditions!
It is what it is...
If someone offers a 4th I'd consider
A third or anything higher and I pull the trigger.
Package Deal
Would anyone consider a package deal. I heard some rumors (probably a fan rumor) that the Broncos were considering taking a 4th round pick and Hasselbeck for Marshall. This was before the trade for Quinn. I don’t think there are any legs to that rumor but it got me thinking.
I would probably want at least a third rounder in return for Hass if we were going to trade him straight up for a pick.
Hm.
I don’t think Hasselbeck would even fetch anything higher than a 6th. His value is really, really low.

I don't think we should trade him.
Although I don’t want to see him playing here either. I just t think we would get bent over in another trade and get like a 6th rounder for him. I’d rather have him around in case he is the best QB so at least we have some depth.

Sink or Swim
I don’t think we should trade Hass for nothing. It should be something that benefits us. However, I think we have to go all in with Whurst and let the kid sink or swim. With Hass looming in the background I don’t know if we would be able to do that. I think we should get something for him while we can. I will never get rid of his jersey though!
Preaching to the choir
It’s time for Hass to go. I’d take pretty much anything for him at this point… his presence only helps hinder the development of Charlie and Teel.
That said, there’s no rush. Why deal him now unless we get a decent pick out of it? As someone said (John, probably) there’s going to be some team out there whose QB gets injured in the preseason and needs a starter-capable player right away.
While I agree with much of your post, I'm not sure that Teel will ever amount to more than a backup option.

No one's "sure", but we drafted him for a reason.
The presence of Hass hinders his development, that’s all I was trying to say. Though I’m definitely not sold on anything about Teel yet.
If there is any actual perceived value for Hasselbeck, I'd say yes.
But I seriously doubt that he has any such value that a team would like to give up anything in return for him.

Good Point djafrot
I think if we could get value for him now trade him. If we wait longer when there may be actual value (i.e. the Vikings if Favre doesn’t return) we may get a lot more.
On another note… Who absolutely hates the Whurst trade. Most fans in the comment sections I have read (tribnet, seattlepi, seattle times) hate the trade. I don’t think John has done anything on the scouting of Whurst yet, so I am anxious to see if he does. Other than the “Putting Names to Numbers” post I haven’t seen anything from John yet.
I could see Matt sticking around one last year.
If he has anything left in the tank, he’ll show it this year. Otherwise, your up Chuck.
Why not?
Seems to me it would at least help set the market a little. I realize that Matt and Charlie W are not the same player at all, but they are at least both quarterbacks.
Ask yourself this.
Who do you think is going to want to give up anything for a 34-year old quarterback who has had a lot injuries in past 3 of the last 4 seasons? Would you?

I'm not saying Hass has equivalent value to Charlie
But they are both quarterbacks. If Charlie nets the Chargers more than what was typically given for a QB of his perceived quality, than the overall market for QB’s goes up.
Clearly Hass has SOME value. It may just not be very much.
The big factors are Hasselbeck's age, his salary, the decline of his physical ability, and his recent injury history.
I have a hard time imagining that Hasselbeck has any trade value at all.
Whitehurst is young and has enough potential for another team give up some trading commodity. I don’t agree with what the Seahawks gave up or the process of how they went about the trade, but after watching Whitehurst’s youtube video, he has the tools to make this trade a huge steal for the Seahawks. Whether he will or not remains to be seen.
(If there is one thing that Matt Hasselbeck has taught me, is that it’s best to be patient and give the quarterback the benefit of the doubt for a couple of years or, so I will not start judging Whitehurst until the season is over, if he starts the majority of the season, that is. By then, I will be better able to gauge how the trade paid off. Even more so after a couple of years.)

Hass' value comes when someone has a devastating injury, or a 2nd QB goes down, a 3rd isn't ready, and the first is shaky as well.
Right now when everyone is healthy and optimism is high, he really has very little value.
The moment a “secondary contender” loses a QB to injury though? Well, now we MAY be talking. (Isn’t Pennington— a similar level guy— still a FA to be had for cash only, not a pick?) So we really need TWO teams to have sudden QB issues, not just one.
If Pennington signs with someone, and then someone like Chad Henne, Matt Sanchez, Carson Palmer, Eli Manning, or Kyle Orton goes down, well, MAYBE then he has some trade value. Right now, I suspect he is close to worthless in trade. Better to keep him around in case we DO see a resurgence or at least until Whitehurst proves he can throw a regular season pass.

I would be all for trading Hass.
However it seems unlikely to me for two reasons: 1. Who would we trade with at this point? The only team off the top of my head that would be in the market for a veteran QB are the Vikings. If they were to trade for a QB, McNabb would probably be a more attractive option. 2. Pete Carroll’s expressed desire to win now. Trading Hass seems more like a rebuilding move.
Really? Clausen?? We can't do bett- oh, screw it. We have Carroll.
Nevermind.

He could be, yes.
Depending on how things shake out in the top 5. He looked like the clear choice before the Whitehurst trade.
He's got a weird face that I want to punch...
and he’s overrated in very poor QB class. Mostly his face though.

I’m not giving you those materials to read about Clausen to convince you or change your mind in any way, but to assess him with more information on him. There’s no airtight argument for Clausen, but there’s also no airtight argument against him. The alien wizard article looks at many facets of Clausen’s time at Notre Dame.
I’m personally inclined to take Clausen if the ones that I want are not there (McCoy, Berry), perhaps even if they are.

Some fair arguments there. I guess I'll wait and see.

Yes, trade him now
on draft day. Hasselfragile + the 6 pick & possibly another to Detroit for the #2 and a boy named Suh. I’ve read they’re willing to trade down, and a pro-bowl back up/mentor for Stafford and a short drop in the draft could tempt them.
Anyone who passes on suh is going to look like the jailblazers passing on Jordan cuz they needed a center. I’d trade down on the 14 pick to for a late first and a second rounder too.
Really? Suh is the Michael Jordan of football?
That would be interesting.
