Schefter: Nate Burleson Signs With Detroit

Update: John Clayton is reporting that Detroit will pay Nate Burleson $25 million over 5 years with $11 million guaranteed. I'm not going to grip over losing Nate, but Seattle could have matched that pretty easily. Burleson has his warts, but he will be much harder to replace than Olindo Mare.

Via his Twitter

No matter how many times I do that, I don't think I'll ever get used to citing someone's twitter account in a front page post.

No word yet on how much Detroit is paying, but the reported length of the contract is five years. Nate wasn't the greatest receiver the Seahawks have ever had, but as John pointed out the Seahawks are a team that could use talent at receiver. It would have been nice to retain his services.

Yeah Kampman is on the way to Seattle I heard

He will be better with the 4-3; so don’t underestimate him just yet!

Life without knowledge is death in disguise

5 year, 25 mil, 11 mil guaranteed, is what it's saying on espn

It’s not really a bad deal, it’s for his 28-33 years, so he shouldn’t fall off to much before the deal runs out. And $5 million a year for a solid #2 WR still in his prime that can return kicks, is about right. I thought he had said that something about how he’d give a slight hometown discount to stay in Seattle, I think we should have tried at this price.

Now, can we really can’t afford to lose Branch? Unless we do trade for Marshall, I don’t think we can. Unless this coming year is gonna be a throwaway rebuilding year.

by Mind of no mind on Mar 4, 2010 11:37 PM PST up reply actions

I'm not so sure Kampman will be a 'Hawk.

I’ve not seen anyone reporting the Hawks are interested in him, or they’re going to meet with him, it’s only been speculation. ‘Seahawks need a pass rush, their GM is from Green Bay! THEY MUST BE TRYING TO SIGN KAMPMAN!!’

That said, since I post this, I expect to see him signed by the Hawks when I wake up in the morning. I will then freak out and try to condole myself by eating a huge pile of peanut butter pancakes.

by Trepidation on Mar 4, 2010 11:45 PM PST up reply actions

Nah

actually I’m a bit pissed that Burleson signed so soon after saying he would keep in touch, and how much he wanted to stay a Hawk.

by Trepidation on Mar 4, 2010 11:50 PM PST up reply actions

11 mil is a lot

Seattle probably wouldn’t match it.

by DJ C-Raig on Mar 4, 2010 11:51 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah

I’ve only been a football fan for about 5 years, only got into the real business side..probably just last year. Oh well, lesson learned. Good luck in Detroit, Natey 1!

by Trepidation on Mar 5, 2010 9:04 AM PST up reply actions

Pittsburgh.

Though looking at pictures, Pittsburgh looks a hell of a lot better than I expected. Still being surrounded by all those Steelers fans would be irritating.

by LantermanC on Mar 5, 2010 9:31 AM PST up reply actions

Their Downtown is ok

But everything else is about how you’d expect, industrial and shitty. Being in the PNW spoils you though.

by DJ C-Raig on Mar 5, 2010 9:33 AM PST up reply actions

Yea thats a WTF

What round pick was tendered ?

by paul2 on Mar 4, 2010 11:46 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

Well...

There are always compensatory picks. The formula for how they’re figured is basically black magic, though. Maybe we’ll get a 3rd though. Who knows.

by SeahawksFanInNY on Mar 4, 2010 11:51 PM PST up reply actions

Someone basically cracked the code.

I can’t remember his online name, but he publishes a prediction of who gets the compensatory picks after free agency is over and the draft is gearing up. And from what I remember, he’s usually very accurate. Sando linked to his predictions last year, and probably will again this year.

Now with more lemon bars!

by Fear on Mar 5, 2010 12:01 AM PST up reply actions

Bizarre draft strategy (for 2011)?

Also referencing the low-ish tenders for Sims and Tapp: are they trying to rebuild the team through compensatory draft picks? I’d almost hope so, because at least it would constitute something resembling a plan.

by dagraham on Mar 4, 2010 11:39 PM PST reply actions

What is this "plan" word you speak of?

Seattle is just mashing buttons in Tekken at the moment.

by DJ C-Raig on Mar 4, 2010 11:44 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, I would say so

And yet the San Diego blog seems to be jumping over themselves twisting this into a good thing.

You know, he’s a quitter and coward, I hear.

Well this year will be that much harder to compete.

Doesn’t put us in bad shape, as a franchise. Just makes it tougher this year.

by kow on Mar 5, 2010 12:11 AM PST up reply actions

If Kampman signs with the Seahawks his deal had better not be even remotely close

to what Peppers gets.

Say what you will about Peppers motor (or lack thereof) but at least he’s not an injury risk. I’d be down on signing Kampan even if he had played 16 games, but signing a 31 year old high motor guy who blew out his knee in November and didn’t have surgery until December to a big deal is a horrible idea.

by Culter on Mar 5, 2010 12:04 AM PST reply actions

My hope is Peppers signs with the Skins

And Kampman signs with Chicago. And Tapp signs with us.

by DJ C-Raig on Mar 5, 2010 12:05 AM PST up reply actions

with the uncapped year, can't we just

sign someone to a heavily front-loaded contract, eat a bunch of the money this year, and then put them on much more cap-friendly contracts for the following few years of their deal?

by kow on Mar 5, 2010 12:09 AM PST reply actions

Potentially yes.

I do not think teams are supposed to do that though.

by John Morgan on Mar 5, 2010 12:16 AM PST up reply actions

Okay but the important question is what's preventing them?

Teams weren’t supposed to make a mockery of the transition tag either, but..

by kow on Mar 5, 2010 12:53 AM PST up reply actions

John Clayton on Kevin Calabro's show said that teams are encouraged to do so.

Give almost all the salary as a roster bonus so it’s not prorated. The only thing holding you back is you don’t want to give 45 million in guaranteed money and pay them 1 million a year because then they might lose motivation as they’ve already seen all the money upfront.

by Patton on Mar 5, 2010 3:26 AM PST up reply actions

I think there are also limits on annual increases in contract value

something like 30%

Burleson has been my favorite receiver for years now :(

This bums me out…who the crap else are we going to get at WR? I hope they aren’t planning on utilizing Obomanu any more than they have been (him being tendered makes me wonder).

Nate is also our fastest receiver. Which isn't saying much.

He’s also become our worst punt returner. Even worse than Forsett.

Wow. Weaver got some dough, too.

Eagles agreed to a three-year contract with FB Leonard Weaver.
The exact terms of the deal are not clear yet, with reports ranging from $10 million to $11.5 million. Either way, it’s the largest deal ever for a fullback.

I’ve loved you since you were on our practice squad, Weave. Congrats on the big payday, you deserve it.

I wonder if we'll take a look at Chester Pitts?

Kasey Studdard will be the Texans’ starter at left guard, according to beat writer John McClain.
The Texans are letting Chester Pitts walk in free agency because they are high on Studdard. He’s a cheaper alternative and should be just as effective.

by Misfit74 on Mar 5, 2010 7:49 AM PST reply actions

Really surprised Studdard has considered football after his American Idol stint.....

Given Feely's age, I presume he will mentor and provide the proverbial

‘veteran presence’ to the heir apparent. I’m really nervous about us missing out on Bradford. I’m not nearly as high on Clausen and even he may be gone. Anxious times.

But I did a mild face palm when he did that. I really would have rather have seen Branch leave. But that’s homerism more than rationale.

This:

by Misfit74 on Mar 5, 2010 9:12 AM PST up reply actions

Just curious...

but with his body measurements, he measures up to DT size (I haven’t actually looked at him), but what would be the dif between him being a 3-4 end and being a DT? Is it just playstyle? Can one not transition between one or the other?

Just curious – I have no idea.

I think this is a good pick-up for Detroit.

They need a number 2 wide receiver, and Burleson projects well in that role.
