Schefter: Seahawks Trade Seneca Wallace to Cleveland Browns

Tweet-tweet.

No word yet on compensation, but here's a free form look at what I consider an acceptable price for Seneca Wallace:

Jerome Harrison: Worked with Ahman Green, right?

Shaun Rogers: Malcontent.

Any draft pick: Draft picks do not sack themselves.

Brady Quinn: Myoplex party over here.

Brian Robiskie: Safe.

Pat Murray: Homecoming.

Almost anything else.

It was fun Seneca, but your chances of developing have ended and Seattle needs a starter capable quarterback and as many roster spots as possible to add that.

These last 2 seasons SW outperformed Matt

Matt and SW are not great, but in the upper half of all the QBs that took snaps in the NFL.

BUF’s QB Trent Edwards (6-4/231) has been playing behind a pass-pro OL like the ‘09 Hawks (bad, really bad), got a high ankle sprain that put him on IR. He’s also become shell-shocked (like CLE’s Charlie Frye) last season and only threw between the hash marks and to his checkdowns. Edwards has adequate arm strength, but is too afraid to use it. Backup Ryan Fitzpatrick has a noodle-arm which didn’t do it in Ralph Wilson Stadium winds, and he also had an ankle injury. So BUF’s down to Brian Brohm, who was way worse than either Ryan or Trent. BUF needs a QB worse than the Hawks, much worse. They really need a strong-armed QB, but maybe a smart one would do. They also need alotta other stuff, but QB is Chan Gailey’s biggest off-season need – and he’s not having any luck. Especially in getting a veteran QB. If Trent Edwards is their starting ’10 QB, they expect to have a 7- (or fewer) win season. BUF picks #9.

How about trading Matt for Trent plus their 1st (or 2nd & 3rd) rounders? Hawks write off next season, either trade the #6 to DEN for B.Marshall, or get Clausen or Bradford, or Gerald McCoy and use the #9 on Dez Bryant. Last season Trent was exceptionally awful, but the season before he was really good – way better than any of the Hawks current QBs.

The only thing worse than their QB situation is there o-line connection

Chan Gailey wants to run the ball and he doesn’t have an offensive line. I think Edwards would be okay in this system. What they need is people to open up holes.

John, a hypothetical scenario: what if the Seahawks don't draft a QB at in in the 2010 draft

I know you’re against this, but if this were to happen, would you tolerate the signing of a Shaun Hill or (perhaps) a Derek Anderson or any other halfway-decent QB that could be available, to act as a quasi-“bridge” between Hasselbeck and the next QB we get around to drafting?

Let’s say we take a QB in the 1st round of the 2011 draft, and you knew this would happen right now….how would you feel about Hasselbeck starting this season, and then having this other QB already in place until The Franchise QB is ready? I know getting Charlie Frye a few years ago didn’t pan out at all, but maybe this would have better results. Perhaps.

If there was anyone I thought had potential, like Brodie Croyle or Jason Campbell, maybe

The season went to hell after that

You could just see the life get sucked out of the stadium and the look of defeat on their faces as they left the field. The 49ers looked good the first few weeks of the season and Matt got hurt so that loss was understandable but to play as hard as they did against Chicago and lose at the very end. That kicked off a bad run with a fluke of an ass kicking against Jacksonville and ended with the Arizona beat down a week later.

Who knows maybe that is my perspective because it was the only game I got to go to this year.

I liked Seneca but I'm glad we're moving on

Shoulda been a no brainier once it became clear he was never going to be a starter. It really blocks the development of any other QB on the roster. Not that we’ve had many of those. Now, the question of who becomes the starter after Hasselbeck begins.

In the willingness to get rid of him they have to have some sort of plan.

Well, at least this says Carroll is probably drafting a QB this draft.

No idea what round, but 2 QBs is obviously not enough. If it really is a pick next year, it may mean they are stocking up a little on draft choices and planning on building through the draft. Which, you know, suggests they arn’t in win now mode. But that’s a mighty large amount of speculation with very little evidence to back it up.

Anybody know anything about Teel? Could he play in a pinch?

Last season SW took 225 snaps, 132 dropbacks, ran 4 times, threw 119 times, 77 completions for a 64.7 C% (=Aaron Rodgers), 1 spiked ball, 4 batted balls, 683 yds, 5.7 yds/att, 4 TDs, 2 ints, sacked 9 times (twice running outta bounds behind the LOS), and 6 of his passes were dropped by receivers. He had an 84.1 NFL passer rating. Better than Matt did, and better than the average NFL passer. Under Holmgren’s crew SW may continue to improve.

5.7 yds/attempt is near bottom of the league terrible

I’m beginning to thing yards per attempt is the quickest and easiest (albeit dirty) way to determine a quarterbacks worth to a team.

Or at least weed out the dink and dunkers. Yes, congratulations, you’ve completed ten passes in a row. To the fullback. For minus 1 yard. And hey, no interceptions!

This could've turned out to be a great deal

The Browns (Holmgren) were probably desperate for him (experienced, knows the WCO and can at the very least help teach others) and Carroll probably didn’t care if he kept or got rid of him. He’s a cheap backup who would’ve been gone after next year anyway. Although we’ll never get to, I would love to hear Carroll’s honest impression after viewing all of the tape on Seneca and how much of an impact that had on the decision.

He was already a decision-liability when he HAD confidence, but when he lacked it… it was pretty much the worst thing in the blue and green world.

I wasn't booing Shaun so much as I was booing Holmgren's decision to continue using him as a feature back, and Ruskell's lack of cajones to cut him.

He looked done to me in 2006 (except that awesome Charger’s game and the playoff game) but I thought after the Bears playoff game that the only thing that good game did was buy him an extra year when he was clearly washed up. We booed because we Holmgren and Ruskell to keep him away from the field since it was the best way to win games, not because we didn’t respect what Alexander did for the Seahawks. I’d cheer him loudly if he made any appearance at Qwest, like, say, raising the 12th man Flag.

A less bad decision is still a bad decision.

And the tag could have also been used on Redding.

by Nate Dogg on Mar 8, 2010 10:19 PM PST up reply actions

I'm not so sure it's that simple

If the Seahawks franchise Redding, that’s 8.9 million guaranteed the moment he signs it, which I can’t imagine him not doing.

Now, yeah, Allen’s rich and there’s no cap next year, but that doesn’t mean the Seahawks aren’t a business. They have their budget and they have to stick to it. Plus, they could probably sign him to a 4 year deal for 8.9 million if they want. Burleson is worse at 9.8 mil guaranteed.

For us to fantasize about, but I’m not so sure the front office would get the ok to exceed the budget.

by B.B.Finnegan on Mar 8, 2010 11:01 PM PST up reply actions

Why not?

$2.5 million is not a horrible price for a good kicker in an uncapped year. Even good teams franchise kickers (Pittsburgh franchised theirs this year, and New England has franchised their kicker twice in the last 10 years, Cincinnati did it last year and made the playoffs even though they normally suck).
If they didn’t want Burleson or Redding at the franchise prices, there was no reason not to use it on Mare.

by Mind of no mind on Mar 9, 2010 12:57 PM PST up reply actions

They could have

Signed him to a long term contract and saved the franchise tag for a different player?

Or let him walk and sign another kicker?

Also just because Cincinnati franchised their kicker and made the playoffs doesn’t mean the Seahawks will do the same. Although that would be a kickass cheat code in the NFL.

by ungoreatstefan on Mar 9, 2010 2:05 PM PST up reply actions

Actually I think the franchise tag on Mare is a better move than those options.

Other players were more important to keep, but not more worth the cost of their tag. Could get another kicker. But he’s still got good leg on kickoffs, and assurance is nice when you have so many other concerns — and with no cap this tag is not an impediment to your latitude with those concerns.

Do we want him long-term? He’ll soon be 37. For all everyone wants us to stockpile talent at every position to see what sticks, right now, we seem to assume there’s enough of a glut of kickers that we can get an equivalent on-demand. Get a kicker next year. Interesting discussion and all, but I just can’t see this as a clear-cut screw-up, not at all.

Nice cheat-code lick, though, that was nice.

by jacobstevens on Mar 9, 2010 3:33 PM PST up reply actions

This also is not a screw up:

but we’re currently moving toward the draft, having an increased need at WR and a self-induced increase in need at QB. The Wallace trade in itself is good. And this free agent market was not a good one, by any means, and I don’t think we should sign people just to sign them. And it’s early and I like that they didn’t just pull the trigger and jump into the frenzy.

But our needs were already stark. If Q/PM paint themselves into a corner in the draft, that will be very poor management. Not certain that’s what’s going on, but it’s my biggest concern.

by jacobstevens on Mar 9, 2010 3:38 PM PST up reply actions

If they didn't think Burleson or Redding worth the franchise tag,

then there is nobody left to use it on besides Mare. The next best free agent after those 3 is probably Ken Lucas, which would be a horrible mistake. Also on top of the age issue with Mare as jacobstevens mentioned, there will likely be either a new CBA or a lockout for the 2011 season, so it’s best to avoid signing an old player like Mare to a long term contract until those things get figured out.

And I was only pointing out that successful teams have franchised their kickers before. Some people are acting as if franchising the kicker is unheard of, and only a stupid or very bad organization would do such a thing. I’m only pointing out 3 examples that I know of involving other teams that have franchised their kickers. 2 of them are considered top notch organizations and the other generally being sucky, but having had recent success.

There haven't been that many trades this offseason yet.

And certainly every team has dead-weight it could get rid of.

Seneca is worth next to nothing. For us to get anything out of him is great, in my opinion.

It works for the Eagles, Colts, Steelers, & Patriots

I hope it is the approach we’re taking.

Jarrett Brown

I wouldn’t mind seeing Seattle draft Jarrett Brown as the long term guy but I agree that there probably has to be a “Derek Anderson” type of player signed as the backup for this season.

Any old USC QBs floating around?

Teel

Is it conceivable that the staff already sees something they like in Teel? I really don’t know much about Teel other than some youtube videos, but I get the feeling that he is treated as an after thought most of the time. I wish we could have seen him play the last few games of the season so we can know what he was made of.

by Sonic Boom on Mar 9, 2010 10:50 AM PST reply actions

Teel is probably cheap enough to stay on the roster

We don’t know what we have but it probably isn’t great but good enough to hold a clipboard and get the crap knocked out of him by the first team defense.

I think that question will be answered on day one of the draft

Either they like him here, or he is the number 3 guy, because he is cheap and fills the slot.

Seneca Wallace was the Mike Morse of the Seahawks.

Derek Anderson cut by Browns

Link to article.

Cross your fingers boys. I really hope we don’t see him in Blue and Green next year. Because that means we likely won’t make a serious play on a franchise QB.

6/14/40. Sweet.

I guess if we had wanted Derek Anderson he could have been ours.

He was released by CLE today.

So, good news as far as I’m concerned. I still wonder if we’ll work him out, though I can’t say adding him is a good move.

Seahawks pass Seneca Wallace to Browns

Hopefully this means that the team is going after a top QB in the draft. LT at 6, QB at 14, DE or CB at 40.

What? No SOUL?

I'd be okay with Tebow

if it were down to Tebow or McCoy I would go with Tebow because of his size alone.

I'd rather it goes like this:

Take Clausen at #6 if he’s available, and Gerald McCoy if Clausen is gone, LT #14 (whoever is the top LT on our board) and then whoever they want at #40, frankly, I couldn’t care less.

Thanks for the greatest catch in Seahawks history Seneca

The second I realized that it was you who that came down with it I actually believed we were going to the Super Bowl. Other catches have been more physically impressive but none have had the emotional meaning that yours did.

You were always one of my quirky favorites and I forgive you for being terrible the last two years since you kept the boat afloat long enough in 2006 without Shaun or Hass to enable us to make the playoffs.

It’s a shame that we couldn’t use you to the best of your talent but if it’s any condolence you were just traded for (and drafted) by the guy who has the best eye for QB’s that this league has ever seen. I’m sure you will make something out of your career yet.

Details are out:

The pick acquired by Seattle in the Seneca Wallace-to-Cleveland trade was a conditional seventh-rounder.

Ugh.

by Misfit74 on Mar 10, 2010 11:28 AM PST reply actions

Not good for the browns

If Wallace ends up starting twelve games, they’ll want their #7 back.

by djafrot on Mar 10, 2010 2:59 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

when I said that I was thinking it was a true conditional pick

I like Holmgren still and would like to see him exercise some of his G.M. demons he has with us by getting Cleveland back on track, which means Seneca holds a clip board and plays WR.

Daboll was also QB coach with Brad Smith so he knows about some of the trickery the Jets used that could be part of it.
