Around SBN: Yankees Deny Rumors That Team Is For Sale

With Marshall off the table, how about the dreaded......TO?

Alright alright, so there are probably a lot of reasons this won't happen.  TO wants to play for a contender and we might be the worst team in the league right now.  Pete Carroll probably is not a very big fan of his.  He's 36 coming off a down year (a down year with a bad quarterback, though).  Then there's the notorious attitude issues.

That said, he makes a lot of sense for this team.  We have a need at WR in a weak WR draft and way more important holes to fill with those picks.  He's probably not going to demand a big multi-year contract.  He wouldn't cost us any picks to acquire.  He wants to play for a contender, but is there a contender that wants him?  His signing with the Bills last year, coming off much better results, would indicate otherwise.

With a team that's likely to suck next year notably lacking in a deep threat, in an area of the country that seems to be somewhat out of the spotlight of the national media, it seems to make a lot of sense for us to pursue him, and use those precious picks on more pressing needs.

I agree.

With no real hope of contention, there’s no reason to pay him.

It's Great to be a Florida Gator!

My draft hopes:
#6-Jimmy Clausen #14-Charles Brown #60-Major Wright

I would agree but

It’s unlikely we would be paying him any kind of franchise crippling amount of money. He took a 1 year 6.5mil deal from the Bucs last year, then got worse. I’d think the lack of interest in him would drive that down even more. Use him as a stopgap so you can address WR next year and use this years picks on more critical holes.

TO is no longer a deep threat

His likely production can probably be had with a veteran or two who is let loose or who can be had in a draft day trade.

I can’t see my way to going out and acquiring a 36 year old for this roster at a position where we need to get younger, if anything.

I would normally agree, but I'm not suggesting signing him for more than 1 year or making any sort of big investment in him

There are too many holes in this team to fill in a single draft. We can’t build young at every position we need to be building young at this year, the talent is just not there. Even a declining TO is better than what we’ve got, and if he can be had for cheap, so why not? In such an awful division combined with some smart drafting maybe we even sneak into the playoffs at 7-9!

Okay probably not, but unlike Marshall he’s a cheap player who can be had for no draft picks and still contribute and will be gone by the time the rebuilding really gets underway.

by OlSalty on Apr 16, 2010 7:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd just as soon let the two new guys we picked up have a shot.

They may very well do as good as T.O. would this year. It’s a gamble either way, but THIS way we save money.

2/3 of the world is covered by water. The rest is covered by Marcus Trufant.

by Chickadee on Apr 16, 2010 8:44 PM PDT up reply actions

I think people are either really selling TO short or overselling our rookies if you think Deon Butler is going to come close to his production

He had a combination of Trent Edwards and JP Losman throwing to him and still put up 800+ yards. Trent Edwards and JP Losman really suck, it takes someone able to throw the ball far for a deep threat to actually be a deep threat.

He has pretty much never been injured, he’s not likely to cost that much, we’re in an uncapped year, what’s the huge risk we are taking on here that I’m not getting? Paying Charlie Whitehurst 10 million and giving up two third rounders for was a huge risk, this is just….buying low.

For sure, he’s lost some speed, but I’d take any bet he’ll be better than any WR we’ve got on the roster right now next year aside from maybe Housh.

by OlSalty on Apr 19, 2010 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Sure, but that's not the point.

The point is that we’re not in contention this year, so the acquisition of T.O. really does nothing except take up a roster spot that could be used to foster the development of one of our younger receivers.

by djafrot on Apr 19, 2010 2:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I understand that, but two points

1) This division is hilariously bad. Maybe if you draft well you come out with superb talent at LT and DE or S and gamble on a later round RB, and maybe Whitehurst isn’t as bad as most of us think he will be (okay yeah he probably will be but hush this is my hypothetical) slap a band aid on WR with T.O. you end up with a mediocre team instead of an absolutely atrocious one. A thoroughly mediocre team to match every other thoroughly mediocre team in this division, all while you’ve really done nothing to hamper your long-term rebuilding effort.

2) Outside of Housh, the WR talent we have on this team now could hardly be considered part of our future, thus why it’s a need for us in the first place. I don’t think there’s much point to running Deon Butler out there when we did that every game last year and he showed absolutely nothing. At least Owens helps the team now, maybe for nothing, maybe for something if we get lucky and if he shows he’s still got something left you can extend him into a period where maybe we are in a better position to contend.

3) Seriously, there is NO market for T.O.. This is an average receiver you can get for peanuts. This is such a small amount of money we’re talking about it’s not going to change anything.

by OlSalty on Apr 19, 2010 5:44 PM PDT up reply actions

OK, but....

Grabbing T.O. DOES hamper our long-term rebuilding. We do have young talent at WR… Butler (as you said) but also now we have the Williams brothers. If we pick up T.O. that’s just another WR slot that can’t be filled with a draft pick or even an undrafted FA..

It’s not just a matter of that young WR’s growth, either… it’s him getting adjusted to working with whatever young QB is throwing the ball.

WR’s are notoriously difficult to fit into NFL systems. You can’t just throw them in and expect results.

T.O. is 36. We are not contending for at least a year… what’s the point of keeping an (already declining) 36 year old?

by djafrot on Apr 20, 2010 4:02 PM PDT up reply actions

How about N-O.

Early prospect watch: RB C.J. Spiller, QB Sam Bradford, OT Ciron Black*, DT Gerald McCoy, S Eric Berry, DT Ndamukong Suh, CB Ras-I Dowling**, RB Jonathan Dwyer

by Misfit74 on Apr 16, 2010 4:33 PM PDT reply actions

Plus, he's only 6'3".

A bit short for a Carroll wideout.

by Chirp on Apr 16, 2010 6:53 PM PDT reply actions

There's no good reason to sign him.

He’s old and declining. By the time this team has been rebuilt and is contending, he won’t be worth starting.

In the short term, he’d likely lose interest on a losing team and when he does, based on his career, he’d likely either give low effort or become a locker room problem.

He’d also block developing receivers from getting game experience and growing with whoever our QB of the future becomes.

Meh.

There isn’t much added benefit.

For a cheap contract

He’s make a need presence filled in our receiving corp, but that’s unlikely.

by Topher Doll on Apr 17, 2010 10:01 AM PDT reply actions

No

He just isn’t that good anymore – He never had great hands and is now losing all his over the top athleticism that made him a great wide out.

by Scruffy Lefty on Apr 17, 2010 11:02 AM PDT reply actions

Honestly watching the Bills last year, I don't think the problem was mainly with T.O.

He is declining for sure, but he’s still better than our current options, and I wouldn’t call him worse than an average receiver at his current level. Obviously we need to rebuild, but we’re not going to do it all in one draft. What I’m saying is, this is much like what the M’s have been doing under Zduriencik: Win in the long term with your draft, but in the meantime seek out undervalued, cheap talent for the short term to fill in the gaps and, hopefully, take advantage of an extremely weak division with a few lucky breaks.

by OlSalty on Apr 19, 2010 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

T.O. really didn’t have anyone throwing to him.

I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.

by Topher Doll on Apr 21, 2010 10:13 PM PDT up reply actions

No way.

Why? He’s 36. We have young wideouts, or WILL have young wideouts, that need time to develop. At least Marshall would still be here by the time we hit goodness.

by djafrot on Apr 17, 2010 11:57 AM PDT reply actions

Is Pete Carroll really trying to compete this year?

Should I be glad of that if he is?

Should I be concerned that we are not simply working toward the future?

Signing TO would get us more press than Tiger’s woody but I’m not sure that’s a good idea. Let’s surprise if we’re going to surprise and lay low if we have too many holes to fill this year.

I was starting to think about signing Barry Bonds for the M’s when we couldn’t score any runs. That has changed now so forget about it Roidsy McRoidserson.

I would be down

HOFer with near perfect health in the down swing of his career, I think Owens could be above average for a few more seasons.

Couldn't hurt to much

He’d make a great stopgap for a year or two if cheap

by Topher Doll on Apr 17, 2010 9:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Indeed. And considering there doesn't seem to be too much of a market for him,

we could sign him to a reasonable contract and stand to make a little bit of that back from increased ticket and merchandise sales – granted, not much, but I’m sure TO would sell more tickets than whatever WR scraps are left on the FA market.

by SeaTownBlueDevil on Apr 18, 2010 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions

He hasn't been a positive locker room influence

It is hard to say seeing how the Williams’ are relative unknowns. I haven’t examined TO closely but his numbers says he’s only nominally effective now. I don’t think he’d be enough of an upgrade at WR to warrant the potential negativity on the team.

Why Marshall did not end up in Seattle:

You guys were right about Whitehurst deal affecting the trade:

http://www.denverpost.com/premium/broncos/ci_14907098.

From the Denverpost
“When Marshall signed his tender last Tuesday, McGuire (Marshall’s agent) knew he would soon have a deal completed with one of three teams — Tampa Bay, Seattle or Miami.

A few hours before the trade was executed in the early-morning hours Wednesday, McGuire still was in serious discussions with the Seahawks. Seattle’s bid, however, was ultimately doomed by its trade last month for quarterback Charlie Whitehurst. To get him, Seattle swapped its No. 40 overall pick with San Diego’s No. 60 pick. The Broncos were not going to accept the Chargers’ discarded pick as the jewel to their trade package."

In my opinion.

by McGeorge on Apr 18, 2010 9:08 AM PDT reply actions

Wow McG

Never expected to see you over here. But great comment, I don’t think Seattle wanted to part with it’s two 1st round picks, and since they traded away their 40 pick it made it hard to see a trade happening without a 1st rounder.

I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
