The Pete Carroll Connection, 100+
So far, what can we say? Pete Carroll's insider information probably is not all that it's cracked up to be. He owns the PAC-10, but outside of it Carroll does not have much more recruiting, game prep or game experience than the average schmo. It is not a great year for PAC-10 prospects. At least not in the top half of the draft. Maybe his knowledge will show itself in the later rounds. Seattle has six picks after 100.

T.J. Ward is one of those 2nd tier Safeties that can be really good in the NFL
He really escalated his play late during big games Walter Thurmond is also pretty good CB to be had later in the draft.
Te’O put up some big numbers against SC too and will be around in the fourth.
6 - Williams/Bulaga, 14 - Spiller, 60 - Houston make me something...something
USC Campers
I would be interested in knowing how many draft eligible players went to a PC led USC football camp. Of course that would have been going back to High School but at least it would be knowledge of potetial anyway.
"Maybe his knowledge will show itself in the later rounds."
I have always presumed that is what has been implied when people talk about Carroll’s insider info. Understanding the talent that lays beneath the elite, throughout the conference, is where he should have a leg up on virtually everyone else.
I'm gonna go calm submissive on your ass.
I'm afraid it might cut either way
That is, there could be a risk that Carroll is overconfident in his assessment of the players he’s seen and doesn’t have an open enough mind on other players, or on new information that might undercut his views. It’s a very human phenomenon — it’s why they sequester juries.

I really appreciate this writeup, John
One of the more intriguing aspects of this draft for ’Hawks fans is the prospect of Carroll having the “inside scoop” on college talent. Without giving much analysis, you let the data speak for itself.
Even though I’m hoping the next installment shows Carroll has ties to a ton of great prospects in rounds 4-7, I doubt that will be the case.
I have a few random inquiries...
It seems like we’ve thrown away a lot of our “win now” potential this off-season. The Husky in me wants to believe this might in someway be influenced by Locker. Am I crazy?
Hardesty is probably too small to be a power back in most systems but could our pure zone blocking possibly accommodate him?
Also,
can we put Carlton Mitchell into the same kind of high upside project boat as Taylor Price?

You're crazy
Tanking for the #1 pick in the NFL isn’t anywhere near the same as in the NBA.
[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]
Well I mean if the Rams take Bradford...
and we don’t stockpile playmakers, is there likely to be a worse team in the league?

The Browns maybe.
The Bucs and Lions too.
But you can’t think that far ahead when it comes to the draft. For all we know Locker could pull a Snead and not even end up being a 1st round prospect.

Absolutely.
In fact, Locker seems like the common example of such a case. Physically talented, good guy, but comes from a losing program and never really had the type of stats one looks for in a typically “franchise” nugget.
How is Locker any different than Clausen
He comes from a losing program, but what has Clausen won? Sure I know ND’s defense was putrid, but still his record as a starter is not exactly stellar.
Er, stats, as I just wrote.
Sorry for the sarcasm.
But Clausen’s stats are pretty impressive in terms of completion percentage, INT’s, and YAC. Locker’s are not.
Clausen and Locker are Opposites
Clausen isn’t a big, hard to knock down super armed scrambling QB. Locker is.
Clausen’s strengths are accuracy, decision making, reading defenses, going to his 2nd/3rd/4th options, looking off the defenders, making last second cnanges before the snap, and not turning the ball over.
Jake is coming back for another year so he can work on those things. If he gets better in all or most of those areas, he will be the superior QB. But that is not a sure thing. We’ll see as the year goes on.
He was rated by some as a top QB if he came out as a junior, but even those who thought he’d get picked very high also thought he needed to sit and learn because he isn’t NFL ready.
Clausen is.
If we can get him, we should. Passing on Clausen in hopes that A) Jake will become NFL ready and B) we’ll actually have a shot at drafting him, is a very poor bet.
Brohm was destined to be a number 1 pick and look what happened.
6 - Williams/Bulaga, 14 - Spiller, 60 - Houston
6 - McCoy, 14 - Brown, 60 - Hardesty
6 - Berry, 14 - Brown, 60 - Houston
Either way it is pretty bad ass

Yes
There’s no way a new coach/GM/whatever would tank their whole first season away just for the hope that they might be able to land a certain QB prospect a year from now.

Totally agree
I totally agree but I can see circumstances, Matt getting hurt and Whitehurst getting hurt where the Hawks are picking in the top couple picks of the draft.
As far as QB’s are concerned the Lions have their QB of the future and if the Rams take Bradford, that would be 2 teams barring catastrophic injury that would not take a Locker or any other QB. Freeman with the Bucs looked half decent last year so that may be a third depending on development.
The Hawks just seem to have a lot of holes and I could see them fighting the Broncos, Oakland and the Browns for the top spot if certain things happen. Not saying they will be, but I could see it that way.
I think it's safe to say
that the NFL rarely, if ever, has the equivalent of a LeBron James, who is known a year in advance to be the clear-cut #1 pick and is someone teams will fall over themselves to try to get. The closest I can think of is Michael Vick.
And if such a player ever does exist in the NFL draft, it’s not Jake Locker.
