Thursday Draft Thread

Maybe this draft will qualify as a huge moment in team history. It's surely a huge moment for Pete Carroll and John Schneider. Both are banking on a good class and both must know that a few notable flops could cost them their jobs. I like to downplay big events, not look forward too much and then be excited when they are upon me. Right now, I'm still not that excited. Maybe it will hit me when Sam Bradford is selected and immediately demands a trade.

Let's muck it up. It's pointless for me "live blog" the draft when the comments section is easier, more immediate and more democratic. Over the next few hours, I should have plenty to say, scream or maybe even shout out in joy about. We all should.

For me

Okung @ 6, Spiller @14 assuming they don’t trade down and Chad Jones @ 60. Now that would be a sweet 1st and 2nd day draft.

by cthunder on Apr 22, 2010 3:23 PM PDT reply actions

yes it would.

Early prospect watch: RB C.J. Spiller, QB Sam Bradford, OT Ciron Black*, DT Gerald McCoy, S Eric Berry, DT Ndamukong Suh, CB Ras-I Dowling**, RB Jonathan Dwyer

My gut is telling me Trent Williams at 6 and Spiller at 14.

but I still have a feeling that they might take Clausen.

In the media

No way are teams adjusting their opinions of players based on ESPN

by FizzleDrip on Apr 22, 2010 3:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Every team is responsible to its fans.

Fans watch ESPN. Imagine what would happen here if Carroll got some kind of wild hair up his butt and drafted a bunch of linebackers. Pandemonium. I think there’s real pressure on St Louis to not get Bradford because of the cold feet people always get about picking a quarterback first. It’s either that or a run that brings Tebow and McCoy into the first round. Teams are incapable of treating the drafting of a qb rationally.

by BurtonOerney on Apr 22, 2010 3:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Here is my own relatively uneducated mock Seahawks draft.

It’s not based on what WILL happen, but what COULD happen if I dreamed. Most later-pick info from NFLDraftScout.

I absolutely adore the idea of trading with the Eagles. In my scenario, the Hawks trade their 127 and 60 to Houston for their 51 and 187 so we can draft, uh, Houston. He’s rated a fair bit higher than our 60, and DT’s seem to go quick.

6. Eric Berry, S. I wouldn’t mind Clausen either, but it really looks like we’re sticking with Hass/Whitey for a year. Berry instantly improves every aspect of our secondary.

24. Charles Brown, OT. Should be available here. If not, there are lots of other options at this spot, including Ryan Matthews, RB, or maybe Brian Price, DT.

51. Lamarr Houston, DT. He and Mebane make for a devastating interior. Lofa and co. will say thanks for years.

70. Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, CB. Could also maybe play FS. Big. Maybe starts opposite Trufant, allows Wilson to move to nickel.

104. Navorro Bowman, OLB. Doesn’t appear to have any glaring weaknesses. Trade Hill, let this kid learn beside Lofa.

105. Brandon Lang, DE. Has ability to drop into zones… possible Elephant backup?

127. Mike Johnson, OG. Cerebral, a leader. Possible starter at LG, can wait under Hamilton if not.

133. Geno Atkins, DT. Seahawks are very short on DT depth. Stole this from John.

139. Major Wright, FS. Can play deep cover, good special teams guy. Could replace Babs after some seasoning.

176. Charles Scott, RB. 240Lbs, inside runner. Little injury prone, but at #176, shit… run him into the ground.

245. Kyle Williams, WR. Smallish, good potential in the slot, can return punts. Hey, keep grabbing Williams’es at receiver, a couple have to stick!

my Seattle sports fan gene is kicking in

and I have a feeling that Queen and Prime Minister are going to leave me really bummed tonight.

Only two rough scenarios would dissapoint me:

Defense/Defense in the 1st (regardless of player), or two huge reaches on “questionable” players (think Jason Pierre-Paul plus Bruce Campbell)

Best also missed eight games, including four to close last season with concussions suffered in back-to-back games. A year ago, he had elbow and foot operations.

And honestly, if no one trades up…. I don’t see anyone taking him.

Trades up, though.

I wanted Spiller almost as much as Clausen.

Still, I gotta admit, at 14 Clausen sounds so, so tempting.

But you know, I have to wonder if the FO is wincing at Clausen being there at 14. Do they take him and hedge on Whitehurst from the beginning?

I wonder if they were wishing he’d have been gone by now.
