But at 12??
Though they sink through the Sea, they shall rise again...Death shall have no dominion...
How so?
It might not be traditional, but top-tier NTs are pretty rare.

Trading away 1st 2nd and 4th rounders to get a first rounder to take him?
Isnt that kind of steep?

Yeah there is that...
Though they sink through the Sea, they shall rise again...Death shall have no dominion...
But get a player.

What a great first round
I figured we would have to choose between a franchise QB or a franchise LT

I bet we grab Mays
Calling it now.
2/3 of the world is covered by water. The rest is covered by Marcus Trufant.
Morgan or Clausen at #14.
I’m thinking Morgan now. And I’d be very happy with either.
The Seahawks have traded my signature to the Detroit Lions for a 6th round draft pick.
I would be mad if i were a Charger fan.
Though they sink through the Sea, they shall rise again...Death shall have no dominion...
So we will get to choose between two of Earl Thomas, Jimmy Clausen, or Derrick Morgan.
This could be awesome.
CLAUSEN CLAUSEN CLAUSEN CLAUSEN
YOU WANTED HIM ONCE PETE
Now is the time for a franchise QB
It's Great to be a Florida Gator!
My draft hopes:
#6-Jimmy Clausen #14-Charles Brown #60-Major Wright
Morgan please...
Or Clausen…
The Seahawks have traded my signature to the Detroit Lions for a 6th round draft pick.
Wouldn't it be hilarious
if the Eagles drafted Clausen.
If we trade out.
Then not to mad. But otherwise pissed.

If Thomas is gone
I hope the Hawks go for Bryant or trade down. Not really sold on Clausen at 14
He's a good risk at 14

Months of mock drafting haven't helped me decide if I want Clausen at 14 or not...
AAAAAH so torn…
Though they sink through the Sea, they shall rise again...Death shall have no dominion...
Or grab a 2nd if possible.
With all these teams moving up and reaching, you can exploit teams desperate for a certain player.
yeah but we got a franchise LT and a franchise QB

Time for us to take Morgan or Clausen. Or Thomas.
The Seahawks have traded my signature to the Detroit Lions for a 6th round draft pick.
I will lose $10
If we dont take mays now. How can we not?

I never thought Clausen would fall.
Seemed so unlikely.

Strange.
Bills are stupid.
I’m just jealous though.
Clausen?
He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is
Clausen should be a no-brainer
Earl Thomas is good, but we can grab Rolle on Saturday. CLAUSEN.

He's not even 6 foot...
he’s fast enough to make up for it, but he doesn’t jump well either.
Good instincts for a Saftey though.
I worry all this "instincts" bluster is just Mayock's way of saying Thomas had 8 picks last season.
That’s…not going to translate.
I know it won't fully...
but some guys really do have a knack for finding the ball. He agressive, and might be a better CB than S with his speed.
Curious why your opinion of Mayock is so low
Especially in regards to his evaluation of Thomas.
He has probably watched every snap Earl Thomas has taken, and he came away impressed. Mayock himself was a safety in the NFL and has since garnered a pretty good reputation evaluating NFL talent. I highly doubt he just looked at a stat sheet, saw “8 picks,” and decided he was instinctive.
Morgan Clausen Thomas all great players - or Dez or Wilson :)
He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is
Thanks god we can stop talking about Clausen now.

Well he's from ND, so he's going to follow the exact same career path as Rick Mirer.
Common knowledge and all.
Leave it to Mayock to get me hyped about Thomas again.

And he’s going to take time to get better.
Huh? Lots of QB's produce until their mid-30's.
That’s seven years from now for Whitehurst, and he’s seen very little on the field action in his time in the NFL.

by Generzal Zod on Apr 22, 2010 6:16 PM PDT up reply actions
Because I want Jimmy Clausen.
This isn’t a difficult thing to grasp.
Seems like we had the right priorities
The O-line was in a tatters, so the first pick had to go towards fixing it. Not sure about going with a Safety in the 1st round, but he seems like a good one. Since we have our two new charity cases for WR, I’d have liked to see us possibly trade down toward taking a RB. Or just trade down period. In this draft, a handful of 2nd and 3rd rounders might be more valuable than a single 1st round choice.
So who is going to play strong safety for us?
if Thomas is going to play Free Safety
Maycock on Berry, he watched a shit ton of snaps and this is his assessment:
in his highlights he's basically uncontested
they couldn’t find anything better?
Doubt either
Arizona still has What’s-his-name that they seem to mostly be happy with now that he got his jitters out. Minnesota just resigned their backup QB and are still in the annual FavreWatch to see what he does. I doubt they’ll make a move for a starting QB while he’s still on the fence.

Because let’s face it, Clausen can’t learn anything good from Alex Smith.

The issue at the time with Manning...
…was that he and his dad did not want him to play for a “loser.” Daddy Manning had played for a loser for way too long, and decided that if Eli went to play for San Diego, he’d be on a losing team FOREVER. That was the story I remember hearing about.
Also, Archie didn't like the way the Chargers treated Leaf
After Pey Pey was drafted the same year as Leaf, Archie got to know the Chargers a bit and see their dysfunction with Leaf, and didn’t want precious Eli to have the same fate.

Long time reader, frist time poster
Does the Clausen slide remind anybody of when Brian Brohm slipped for no apparent reason? It seems like almost every year one of these QB’s ends up going way later than anybody thought they would..
I thought Brohm was a big deal as a junior but choked a bit as a senior
and thus his stock dropped a lot.
Welcome to Field Gulls.
I’m certain Brohm was never a top 10-15 pick when he was in the draft. This is weird though.
The Seahawks have traded my signature to the Detroit Lions for a 6th round draft pick.
Well a lot of teams just don't need a QB.
If Clausen fell past 17 he was likely to fall a bit, still surprising though.
Not sure Brohm slid that far
consensus was that him and/or Henne would go early 2nd. He slid to mid 2nd.
I think he was referring to Ford Field and Best...
not sure that FF is concrete though I know it’s got Field Turf over top of it.
Oh right, field turf.
Forgot that it’s not quite that hard stuff anymore.
At some point, if Seattle sees anything at all in Clausen
They have to take the risk. It’s foolish to bank on Hasselbeck and Whitehurst.
But that's the question. Do they see anything in the guy?
by Kevaru on Apr 22, 2010 7:53 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
I'm going to be pissed if Whitehurst ends up costing us Clausen.
I can’t imagine how you don’t think Clausen is a better prospect then Whitehurst, and grabbing him at the tail end of the 1st round, beginning of the second? He’s going to be cheeeap. So he can’t even hurt the franchise if he busts.
Now with more lemon bars!
What does that cost
If they trade up to say, the first pick tomorrow? I have no idea at all.
A 1st rounder next year
or the rest of our draft this year? Something like that I’d guess.
Now with more lemon bars!
Well, we'd have to move from 60 to 37 or so (Philly's) to get ahead of Cleveland.
So, 60 and a fourth rounder this year + something from next year.
Lots. But it would be worth it.
I'd bank on a super strong class next year
we can get one of Locker, Luck, Mallet at the top. There will be some other quality QB’s next year as well.
I think all three of those guys look better than Bradford or Clausen
maybe not Luck, since he’s going to be a So. and all. But the class should end up better.
Complete Agree
As has been demonstrated amply tonight, most teams are set at QB. We can package and take one of the big three next year. All of whom are rated higher than Bradford was this year.
One in the hand is worth two in the yadda yadda

Seems less of a story this year.
Wish we’d scooped that pot of picks from Philly.
So the Whitehurst trade may have killed Seattle's chances to trade for Marshall and now to trade up for Clausen.

Maybe it won’t, and that would be awesome. If we walked away from this draft with Okung, Thomas, and Clausen that would be huge.
But you’re right that there’s no point wondering what if at #40 anymore.
I think it is fair to say that trading Whitehurst cost us any chance at grabbing an interesting player who fell out of the first.
And really, I have to think that we could have gotten Whitehurst after the draft if we wanted him.

…or that Whitehurst has really shown something in practice. I would have thought for sure the Q/PM would have done a deal by now to move up and grab Jimmy by now.
Maybe they know he's going to fall farther
Wouldn’t count on it though.
There's a good chance he was the best QB in the draft.
To take him in the 2nd round would be an insane steal.
Now with more lemon bars!
Really?
I don’t think there’s a very good chance he was anymore. You think Bradford would have fallen to the 2nd if the Rams had picked Clausen? Not that that proves anything, but it shows who teams value more.
by Brendan Scolari on Apr 22, 2010 8:47 PM PDT up reply actions
Bradford had a lot of hype
and I have no idea how or why. JM did a good comparison between the two. It’s weird. Bradford really didn’t do much of anything that Clausen didn’t do after the seasons ended, and somehow people just decided Bradford was going to go #1. It was a strange process.
Now with more lemon bars!

Obviously Clausen might still be better
Hell, John Skelton could end up being the best QB in this draft. But it seems (to me at least) that Bradford was probably a considerably better prospect. I honestly always thought Clausen was overrated, not Bradford, but I still thought he was a top 15-20 talent.

Locker may not be the best QB available
some “draft experts” think that is what caused some of these juniors to come out early

Depending on how the season shakes out we could get Locker
Luck seems like the most pro-ready

We have 0 skill position players so far
and our DL isn’t looking so hot. I don’t mind our 1st round picks, but I doubt they’ll improve the team much next year. This could easily be a team that sucks next year but (if the players develop) could be poised for a break out year the year after next.
Now with more lemon bars!
At this point I think that we'd have to finish with 2 or fewer wins to get Locker.
We’re bad, but I don’t think we’re that bad.
a lot of that depends on next year Brian Brohm was projected to be no. 1 overall

Locker has all the phycical skills that make teams drool though
Like Bradford and Tebow. That’s what mostly counts, I’m seeing.
by B.B.Finnegan on Apr 22, 2010 8:14 PM PDT up reply actions
True the spread has kind of done that for QB prospects
I’m also seeing that a pro-style doesn’t matter. Even if we don’t get Locker, Mallett, and Luck are going to be good.

I hate that we're talking about Locker already
I remember fans talking about Brady Quinn at #1 about 365 days before he was drafted, way down the board. So much can happen it seems silly.
I have very
very little faith in Whitehurst. I think he’s going to crash and burn bad. It’s going to take one hell of a spring and summer to convince me otherwise. And our RB situation isn’t pretty (I love Forsett, but he’s not a feature back). And defensively, our line is still in shambles. We still have some picks to clean up some more holes, but I’d only count on the 2nd rounder. That still leaves some big holes.
So what I’m saying is, yea I can see us being that bad. It’d require playing below our talent level, but I can still see it.
Now with more lemon bars!
That is what I am thinking
we will be better but the 49ers got a lot better tonight too.

Ryan Mallet is a 6-7 kid with a cannon
he should be able to boost his stock (maybe above Locker) with a solid season.
Andrew Luck from Stanford has the size, smarts and tools and should be a first rounder.
I like Andy Dalton from TCU as a sleeper. Good size, adaquate arm strength and good mobility.
Mallet has a little bit of an advantage because he has to face tough defenses
and I love my Ducks and am an avid Pac-10 apologist, that ain’t our strong suit.

They are talking about his Arrogance. I guess everyone sees him as another R. Leaf. shrugs
I don't see his arrogance as a problem, he's a good player and knows it
The bluster when he went to ND was the result of putting a microphone infront of an 18 year old. If you don’t feel like you can take over the world at that age you have problems.

that’s why I really really want Clausen. But even if we don’t get him, a QB next year could be set up for success as well.

Very productive first round
filled two holes with excellent talent.
We can fill RB and WR holes in later rounds where sleeper athletes can be had.

Nobody.

You know, overall I thought Carroll and company did a good job.
Would be nice to have that 40th pick and have a better shot at Clausen, but as far as this draft goes I was impressed. I really thought there was a chance Carroll had a McDaniels like draft.
What the shit?
Where did Mora’s beady eyes come from?

It was an excellent day for the Seahawks. It won't matter unless the team finds a quarterback, but for talent, great, great first day.
I’ll start with Okung tomorrow.
I'm excited to hear what you think about Thomas.
He seems like a very chic pick and I’m always leery of chic.
I've watched a lot of Texas's games this year

We were all pretty divided on Clausen
Even if we don’t take a QB this draft will be remembered by the team for a long time, which is nice because it seems like a while since that has happened.
I wish Cops was on...
Been a while since we've had one top 15 1st round pick (excluding last year)
let alone two.

Alright so we made major improvements to our O-line and secondary
Next, defensive line! Price falling to 60, please!
I have a question for you guys.
Let’s say you were GM today, and you had the chance to pick at 6 and 14 with what was available. Who would you take? No trades.
Me:
6 Okung
14 Clausen
Okung and Clausen in that order
but I’m definitely not disappointed by who we got today.
I was torn between Okung and Clausen/Okung and Spiller/Okung Thomas

by Thomas Beekers on Apr 22, 2010 8:58 PM PDT up reply actions
Probably the same for me
though I’m not sure. Whitehurst kind of pigeon holes you into not taking a QB. So I might have gone with something else. I’m definitely not disappointed with what we got.

I know I am opening myself to serious criticism, but I am not the person to evaluate QB talent
I guess the question is what does he have that they didn’t see in Clausen. If they wanted Clausen they could have had him and they passed.
I wish Cops was on...
by Generzal Zod on Apr 22, 2010 9:04 PM PDT up reply actions
Well once you get Whitehurst it's pretty hard to get Clausen.
For all we know they thought Clausen would be gone by the time they picked at 14, and they didn’t like him enough to grab him at 6. And once he was available at 14, it’s pretty hard for a front office to say, “You know, I like Clausen a lot at 14. Let’s grab him even though we spent picks and $ on Whitehurst.” I wanted Clausen, but I never expected us to get him once Whitehurst was grabbed.
Now with more lemon bars!
Yep.
Whether right or wrong, the team threw its weight behind Whitehurst, has been working with Whitehurst, has made promises to Whitehurst. If they picked Clausen at 14, it would seem uncertain and duplicitous.
He wasn't going to cost a 1st round pick, for one
But Whitehurst has a better arm and more mobility than Clausen. Clausen is kind of like Alex Smith in that he doesn’t have great physical tools for a top QB prospect, and I’d guess that combined with his apparent attitude problems turned teams off.
by Brendan Scolari on Apr 22, 2010 9:09 PM PDT up reply actions
I grew up in Texas and the only thing I took from there was a love for the Longhorns and acoustic blues (not the candy ass Starbucks7piece horn section blues festival shit)
so anyway I guess I’d be happy if we got McCoy or Houston
I wish Cops was on...
by Generzal Zod on Apr 22, 2010 9:12 PM PDT up reply actions
Alex Smith's tools are just fine for an NFL quarterback though. What makes Clausen in no way like Smith is whats important, making reads and pocket presence.
He was a risk
In a way we made safe picks with players every one is predicting to be “sure things”, Carroll has to show progress especially as Allen’s health deteriorates and this team is run like the Blazers.
I wish Cops was on...
by Generzal Zod on Apr 22, 2010 9:26 PM PDT up reply actions
I wasn't comparing them as players
Just their physical tools. Clausen doesn’t have anything that stands out physically, and his accuracy is worse than Bradford. That combined with his attitude/maturity issue (or whatever) makes him not that appealing, there’s nothing too special about him.
These are just my opinions and they could be totally wrong. I just think people are too hung up on the whole “He played in a pro style offense” thing in this case, since most of the other QB’s in this class were in the spread. There’s nothing (to me) special about Clausen.
by Brendan Scolari on Apr 22, 2010 9:36 PM PDT up reply actions
I'd say he looks pretty special.
His accuracy at the combine was almost immaculate, and his completion percentage is a hell of a lot better than “next one” Jake Locker’s. His arm is not Elway’s but it’s just fine and easily that of Bradford’s. He has a pile of experience and came back to win multiple games, under the pressure of playing for a crappy Notre Dame team.
I pretty much disagree with all of that
He didn’t throw at the combine, so I don’t know what you mean with that. If you mean his pro day, it’s pretty silly to judge a QB’s accuracy based on scripted throws to receivers with no pass rush or DB’s.
I don’t know what Jake Locker has to do with this. You don’t simply grade QB’s off of their completion percentages in college. Colt McCoy had an incredible completion percentage and I think he’s an extremely overrated prospect, he just doesn’t have the tools to be very successful in the NFL from my perspective. Clausen doesn’t have Bradford’s accuracy IMO.
His arm strength is okay (and yes, I think it’s worse than Bradford’s), but it’s not equal to the prototypical top 10 pick. Watch how much air he has to get under most of his deep balls.
He is experienced, I’ll give him that, although not incredibly so. I don’t care about how many games he won or cameback from very much, and his offensive teammates were absolutely not crappy, they were actually pretty good.
by Brendan Scolari on Apr 22, 2010 10:07 PM PDT up reply actions
You're only looking at his physical skills and are completely discounting his ability to play quarterback.
Ok
Let’s just agree to disagree then. I’m tired of talking and thinking about Jimmy Clausen.
by Brendan Scolari on Apr 22, 2010 11:19 PM PDT up reply actions
actually, completion percentage is a pretty damned good way to judge
as I believe I’ve read here.
Unless it's a spread offense...
which inflates the completion percent.
I'm happy.

“By far and away the worst pick in this draft. Wow. How can you justify trading away Cutler and picking this kid. He’s a fifth-round pick — at best. Now we know why Josh McDaniels will last one more year in Denver. Horrible. Just horrible.”
