Morgan or Clausen at #14.

I’m thinking Morgan now. And I’d be very happy with either.

Curious why your opinion of Mayock is so low

Especially in regards to his evaluation of Thomas.

He has probably watched every snap Earl Thomas has taken, and he came away impressed. Mayock himself was a safety in the NFL and has since garnered a pretty good reputation evaluating NFL talent. I highly doubt he just looked at a stat sheet, saw “8 picks,” and decided he was instinctive.

Seems like we had the right priorities

The O-line was in a tatters, so the first pick had to go towards fixing it. Not sure about going with a Safety in the 1st round, but he seems like a good one. Since we have our two new charity cases for WR, I’d have liked to see us possibly trade down toward taking a RB. Or just trade down period. In this draft, a handful of 2nd and 3rd rounders might be more valuable than a single 1st round choice.

by Clendy on Apr 22, 2010 6:14 PM PDT reply actions

So who is going to play strong safety for us?

if Thomas is going to play Free Safety

Maycock on Berry, he watched a shit ton of snaps and this is his assessment:

I have very

very little faith in Whitehurst. I think he’s going to crash and burn bad. It’s going to take one hell of a spring and summer to convince me otherwise. And our RB situation isn’t pretty (I love Forsett, but he’s not a feature back). And defensively, our line is still in shambles. We still have some picks to clean up some more holes, but I’d only count on the 2nd rounder. That still leaves some big holes.

So what I’m saying is, yea I can see us being that bad. It’d require playing below our talent level, but I can still see it.

he should be able to boost his stock (maybe above Locker) with a solid season.

Andrew Luck from Stanford has the size, smarts and tools and should be a first rounder.

Okung and Clausen in that order

but I’m definitely not disappointed by who we got today.

Probably the same for me

though I’m not sure. Whitehurst kind of pigeon holes you into not taking a QB. So I might have gone with something else. I’m definitely not disappointed with what we got.

Now with more lemon bars!

I know I am opening myself to serious criticism, but I am not the person to evaluate QB talent

I guess the question is what does he have that they didn’t see in Clausen. If they wanted Clausen they could have had him and they passed.

Well once you get Whitehurst it's pretty hard to get Clausen.

For all we know they thought Clausen would be gone by the time they picked at 14, and they didn’t like him enough to grab him at 6. And once he was available at 14, it’s pretty hard for a front office to say, “You know, I like Clausen a lot at 14. Let’s grab him even though we spent picks and $ on Whitehurst.” I wanted Clausen, but I never expected us to get him once Whitehurst was grabbed.

Yep.

Whether right or wrong, the team threw its weight behind Whitehurst, has been working with Whitehurst, has made promises to Whitehurst. If they picked Clausen at 14, it would seem uncertain and duplicitous.

He wasn't going to cost a 1st round pick, for one

But Whitehurst has a better arm and more mobility than Clausen. Clausen is kind of like Alex Smith in that he doesn’t have great physical tools for a top QB prospect, and I’d guess that combined with his apparent attitude problems turned teams off.

by Brendan Scolari on Apr 22, 2010 9:09 PM PDT up reply actions

He was a risk

In a way we made safe picks with players every one is predicting to be “sure things”, Carroll has to show progress especially as Allen’s health deteriorates and this team is run like the Blazers.

I wasn't comparing them as players

Just their physical tools. Clausen doesn’t have anything that stands out physically, and his accuracy is worse than Bradford. That combined with his attitude/maturity issue (or whatever) makes him not that appealing, there’s nothing too special about him.

These are just my opinions and they could be totally wrong. I just think people are too hung up on the whole “He played in a pro style offense” thing in this case, since most of the other QB’s in this class were in the spread. There’s nothing (to me) special about Clausen.

by Brendan Scolari on Apr 22, 2010 9:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd say he looks pretty special.

His accuracy at the combine was almost immaculate, and his completion percentage is a hell of a lot better than “next one” Jake Locker’s. His arm is not Elway’s but it’s just fine and easily that of Bradford’s. He has a pile of experience and came back to win multiple games, under the pressure of playing for a crappy Notre Dame team.

by djafrot on Apr 22, 2010 9:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I pretty much disagree with all of that

He didn’t throw at the combine, so I don’t know what you mean with that. If you mean his pro day, it’s pretty silly to judge a QB’s accuracy based on scripted throws to receivers with no pass rush or DB’s.

I don’t know what Jake Locker has to do with this. You don’t simply grade QB’s off of their completion percentages in college. Colt McCoy had an incredible completion percentage and I think he’s an extremely overrated prospect, he just doesn’t have the tools to be very successful in the NFL from my perspective. Clausen doesn’t have Bradford’s accuracy IMO.

His arm strength is okay (and yes, I think it’s worse than Bradford’s), but it’s not equal to the prototypical top 10 pick. Watch how much air he has to get under most of his deep balls.

He is experienced, I’ll give him that, although not incredibly so. I don’t care about how many games he won or cameback from very much, and his offensive teammates were absolutely not crappy, they were actually pretty good.

QOTD: Pete Priscoe - CBS

“By far and away the worst pick in this draft. Wow. How can you justify trading away Cutler and picking this kid. He’s a fifth-round pick — at best. Now we know why Josh McDaniels will last one more year in Denver. Horrible. Just horrible.”

Haha

That’s funny. I got to go check out the Mile High Report and see how they’re taking it.

They've just about banned McDaniels criticism

They will be optimistic to the death.

The Seahawks have traded my signature to the Detroit Lions for a 6th round draft pick.
