Seattle Seahawks Select Golden Tate at 60
Golden Tate is a not a traditional receiver. He does not excel at running patterns or gaining separation. He has strong ball skills but so-so hands. He will not excel at the jump ball. Force Tate to become a traditional wide receiver and Tate could fail.
He is not a traditional receiver. Tate is the new receiver. He's an absolute bulldog after the catch. Tate powers through corners. He excels at screen passes and short routes. Tate can be a quarterback's best friend. The kind of receiver that takes a little and explodes for a lot. In a different passing environment, his limitations might upend him. In the new passing environment, corners playing off, physical coverage barred, spread-style offenses everywhere, Tate could be the new big thing.

I can't express how happy this makes me
Here is the playmaker who can bust it from anywhere on the field
Hands
They aren’t too soft, but they are STRONG.
Wait, what?
I mocked Tate in the first like every time. I love him. Great draft so far, im creaming in my pants. Why was I so scared? I wanted to trade a future 2nd for Charles Brown and play him at RT, move Locklear to LG or something and Ben Hamilton becomes quality depth, or Unger gets pushed to the bench and is groomed.
What does this mean? Gets in position to make a play but his hands sometimes fail him?
He has strong ball skills but so-so hands.

Amazing.
Tate is the kind of WR that haunts the dreams of opposing secondaries. He is far off from the prototype, but a plus value where we picked him.
I am loving this draft so far in general because all three of our picks have filled big needs and none of them have been reaches. In fact, I think the consensus for each of our three picks was that they would go earlier than we picked them!

I would like us to score 20+ points a game again
The last two years were awful for that.

Now all we need is JD.
and by JD I mean Johnathan Dwyer. He could easily be available in round 4 or 5 the way things are going (lots of guys perceived to be above him still on the board). I don’t care about his 40 time, or at least I stopped caring like ten 60+ yard runs ago. He is the perfect complement to JJ and Force.
Which doesn't give me confidence
Unless he makes up for it by being able to blow people up in those yards
Blount is a beast

I really want Blount for selfish reasons as a former Duck. But I'd really like to see him truck Mays.

If Seattle ends up with
Griffen and Dwyer or Dixon this could be the best draft in Seahawks history.

We're already getting their I think
I am glad this is a draft we are going to look back at as the start of something special for this team.

Your description of Tate sounds like Wes Welker
Lots of short crosses and screens, lots of action over the middle. Making one or two men miss and getting a few extra YAC. Is that a similar usage pattern we could expect to see?
Welker helps out Brady a ton by picking up a lot of 2nd and 7 or 3rd and 7 type situations.
Can his body-catching develop, hands develop?
My main worry with him is can he play anywhere but the slot and are his hands ever going to be good.
/prays
Sure many people see Tate as being like Steve Smith, WR Carolina
Like Steve Tate is small fast and makes a killing on YAC like Smith Tate burned in the 40
Steve Smith 4.41
Golden Tate 4.36
And like Smith Tate has questions about his hands when he was drafted.
If Tate gets compared to Steve Smith for the rest of his career than the Seahawks should be very very happy.
by Sean Michael Patrick Gallegos on Apr 23, 2010 10:53 PM PDT up reply actions
Smith is where we could develop him towards
In the near term, I see Percy Harvin. Returning the ball and getting it to him in space. He will be fun to watch. Its been a long time since we had an exciting playmaker.
He helps out Moss and other receivers too
their is a lot of attention paid to Welker which allows people to get open and make things happen.

Yep it's late
but still if he works out, it is going to be bad ass to be paired with Carlson and Housh.

I'm still so, so, so, so, so, so, SO ecstatic that the Seahawks got Tate!
Just… WHOOOOOOO!
Talents that I covet:
Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy, Sam Bradford, Mike Iupati, Golden Tate, Earl Thomas, and Freddie Barnes
:D
It’s like watching John Carlson get drafted.. twice in the same draft!

He definitely opens up things for Carlson
and Okung on the left means he doesn’t really have to block anymore.

Barnes
I go to school with Barnes out here in Ohio at BGSU, had several classes with the guy, one of the most level headed hard working students I’ve ever met. I’d be ecstatic if the Seahawks got him, but I think with Tate, they won’t be drafting Barnes.
Hey, that's actually really cool...
He looks like a team-first kinda guy. I hope they do draft him…but I moreso hope that they can also find a decent DT (I have no idea whom) and maybe an LB/Standup DE. And a running back.
With Houshmandzadeh, Butler, both of the Williams', and now Tate.. I'm not really counting on it lol.

But let's say that they do draft Barnes...
That’s a helluva WR competition this summer, and that would be an awesome problem to have.

Two of the Three Biletnikoff Award finalists can't be wrong.
Freddie isn’t the fastest, but he’s a converted QB, so he’s never really worked on speed, but seriously, the guy comes down with anything you throw at him, really good route running.
I saw an interview with carrol on the NFL channel
He said they’ll use him on returns and such heavily
2/3 of the world is covered by water. The rest is covered by Marcus Trufant.
Someone on NFLN just said he'd be used like Harvin in the slot.
I don’t know about that. I see him more like Steve Smith (Panthers) in that it looks to me like he has the ability to play wide. He’s not tall but he’s strong and I’ll bet he’ll be able to beat single coverage all over the field.
Steve Smith's strength is running routes
He’s very, very good at it.
Golden Tate seems more like Wes Welker with Brandon Marshall YAC ability
Isn't Smith a lot faster too?
I am sure he has lost a step now but he really was fast.

Not just 40 time but over all agility and seperation on a route I mean.

Someone could say that Smith
Developed his rout running as a pro. This is something that Tate can also learn. And Tate is straight line faster than smith according to 40 times.

As posted above
Tate had a better 40 time than Steve Smith. I’m more interested in the 3 cone drill time. However, neither matter all that much for game time, as separation comes from technique, too, and not just measurables. As Sean said, there’s a chance we’re looking at Steve Smith of the future, but as of right now, we’ve got a quick little project who could very likely fill a poor man’s Welker role off the bat and develop into more later.
by SeahawksFanInNY on Apr 23, 2010 11:07 PM PDT up reply actions
Here is the answer to your question
Tate 3 cone 7.12
Smith 3 Cone 7.44
Welker 3 cone 7.09 BUT Welker’s 40 time was 4.65
I dare say that Welker is more like Largent (Not that flat-out fast but very agile) and Tate with a 4.36 40 is more like Smith with agility.

Wes Welker with Steve Smith's ability to fight through double teams.
That’s how I see him.

Can you think of a team other than maybe SF
Who can say they did better than Seattle?
by Sean Michael Patrick Gallegos on Apr 23, 2010 11:18 PM PDT up reply actions
Yet the Lions and Browns seem to be just fine at screwing up
Think how many great first round picks they’ve wasted. Raiders also come to mind.
WR question
There is still a great WR on the board Mardy Gilyard if he falls to Seattle in the 4th or 5th do you think Seattle needs another WR?
Mardy Gilyard States
6’1" 187lbs
40 4.52
3 cone 6.78 (This number is SICK)
2009 season stats
Rec 87 yards 1191 TD 11

I see Schneider addressing another need or two before possibly taking a look at WR again.
I think DE is pretty close to being next.
So, if that’s the case, and based on what we’ve seen with Schneider at the helm in this draft, we need to be looking at tools-oriented players. That brings us to:
- Everson Griffin
- Greg Hardy (pretty solid tools, sound technique, but does have injury concerns)
- Ricky Sapp (solid tools, but rather only average best at anything besides pass rushing, where he is pretty good – a likely candidate for the elephant)

From MockingtheDraft:
8. Seattle looks like early draft winner: With Russell Okung, Earl Thomas and Golden Tate, it looks like Seattle may win the premature evaluation of the 2010 NFL Draft. Each should be a rookie starter and good ones. I had Okung as the top-rated offensive tackle and Thomas and Tate ranked as the second-best players at their positions. To get Tate with the 60th pick was a coup for the ’Hawks. With six picks on Saturday, Seattle could add a few more starters and solid depth.
Talents that I covet:
Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy, Sam Bradford, Mike Iupati, Golden Tate, Earl Thomas, and Freddie Barnes
Housh, Branch, Tate, Butler, and Sean Morey
I ask, is this an acceptable corps if the season started tomorrow?
