Assessing Need: Fullback
Fullback
Starter:
Potential Starter: Owen Schmitt
Age: Turned 25 February 13.
Health: Immortal.
Contract: Two years remaining.
Performance: Good run blocking; bad pass blocking.
Position need: Schmitt once upon a time blocked for Steve Slaton. That, and his need for abuse, makes me think he could be an Alex Gibbs type. Hard to know. Hard to know how many snaps will feature a fullback in Bates offense. Seattle will surely add a camp body or three to contest for snaps, but I think Schmitt adequately fills Seattle's needs, whatever they are.

Immortal?
Brilliant. I bet he types in IDDQD every time he wakes up.
2/3 of the world is covered by water. The rest is covered by Marcus Trufant.
Or IDBEHOLDV in the huddle
He doesn’t need it all day…
Actually, IDDQD would make him invincilbe only on every other day...
(It’s a toggle!)
Immortal
I laughed at it. Manase Tonga out of BYU is a great FB that’s worth keeping an eye on.

Jesus,
With a name like that you may as well just call the guy Darth Tonga

Ah, Weaver.
I still can’t figure out why the Seahawks let Weaver go last year (he could have been had for CHEEP, and he is a Pro Bowl FB in his prime now).
As for Owen, the guy will be going into his 3rd season, and that is when most FB’s seem to start hitting their stride in the NFL. I guess we can hope Schmitt plays better this year and he can keep from beating himself up, I just hope like most every other spot on the team they get 2-3 guys to challenge him in the preseason.
I was more upset about Weaver than I was any move this offseason
Weaver was good, I don’t know what Ruskell and Mora didn’t see in him?

You know the funny thing is..
Mora and Knapp let go of Duckett (who many thought was a Mora guy after Ruskell forced him on Holmgren the year before), and brought in Edge and Rankin as guys to take a few carries in short yardage plays, when all along Weaver could have been that guy and for cheep. As for his blocking it is not Mack Strong (or even close), but then again neither is Schmitt. Griffith made sense when he was brought in, but I just don’t see how Weaver was worse than any of the other guys they let go or brought in for short yardage.
that's how I saw him
He wasn’t a true fullback in size, but he could run the ball well and was really helpful in the passing game and he was a weapon when we didn’t have any.
Mack Strong was a special player and there are not likely many of his type to come around anymore.

For cheap?
I do believe Weaver wanted HB money.
He got 3 years 11 million from the Eagles with 6.5 guaranteed
We paid 2 million for Edge to come in and do nothing, he was higher priced but would have done a lot more. There were a lot of 3rd and shorts where we could have used him last year.

Weaver was never very good in short-yardage situations, IIRC.
That’s one reason we signed and kept Duckett for so long.
Early prospect watch: RB C.J. Spiller, QB Sam Bradford, OT Ciron Black*, DT Gerald McCoy, S Eric Berry, DT Ndamukong Suh, CB Ras-I Dowling**, RB Jonathan Dwyer
That's right.
Just because Weaver was big doesn’t mean he was a short-yardage guy. Too slow to the hole, in my opinion.
Schmitt seems like a Gibbs kind of guy
If he can get better at p-blocking he could be a stud without ever getting a measurable statistic.

Technique aside
(which I imagine most pros have a fair grasp on at this point in their careers), how else can one truly improve at a skill like that? They’ve been playing the highest level of football their whole lives, but all of a sudden basic technique eludes them? Or is it the buildup to one’s peak athleticism? CONFUSED.
They play well and at the end of the seaon the Madden computer decides how their skills improve
Seriously though…I think some of it is being required to block and then separate as a check down receiver that gives him problems. When he is back there just blocking he looks okay (disclaimer from my memory of the games I watched and I didn’t go back and watch any film, or even know where to go to do that.) So I think it is a matter of using the skills he has

Recognition
Schmitt played in Rich Rodriguez’s system in college and little experience as a true fullback.
