The Dexter Davis Problem, Solved by Dexter Davis?
Dexter Davis should not be so important, but he is. Davis could be a Chris Clemons injury away from starting and Clemons has struggled with injury throughout his career. At the same time, it's entirely possible Davis does not make the roster. If Clemons stays healthy, Ricky Foley or Nick Reed or both outplay Davis, Davis might be stashed on the practice squad. Before the season is over, Davis could be re-signed and start. That's the situation for Seattle at stand up end.
USC scraped out a win against the Arizona State Sun Devils. It was a win that looked like a loss. The Sun Devils had the 112th ranked offense in college football by S&P, but the 30th ranked defense. This was a grind. I watched this game unfold and didn't take any special notice of Davis. I re-watched.
1. 1st and 10 at USC 17 Joe McKnight rush for 8 yards to the USC 25.
Davis starts the series at left defensive end, weakside. USC breaks in trips left but motions D.J. Shoemate to fullback forming an "I" formation. Davis shows adequate speed off the line, is initially unblocked on a run left, drops a shoulder into Shoemate and pursues the action across the field. Good hustle, but no impact.
2. 2nd and 2 at USC 25 Joe McKnight rush for 3 yards to the USC 28 for a 1ST down.
RDE. Adequate jump, stands up and sheds tight end Blake Ayles, and works into the action for a tackle, but only after McKnight converts the first.
3. 1st and 10 at USC 28 Matt Barkley pass complete to Ronald Johnson for 13 yards to the USC 41 for a 1ST down.
RDE, weakside. Works inside against Charles Brown, separates and is able to hit Barkley as he's throwing.
4. 1st and 10 at USC 41 Matt Barkley pass incomplete to Ronald Johnson.
LDE. Line moves hard right, play-action, Barkley rolls left and targets but overthrows Johnson on a short lob. Davis pursues defensive left but is knocked off balance and stumbles towards the right sideline and away from the action.
5. 2nd and 10 at USC 41 ARIZONA ST penalty 10 yard Holding accepted.
(Interception undone by a careless penalty)
(Davis is out)
6. 1st and 10 at ASU 49 Joe McKnight rush for 7 yards to the ArzSt 42.
(Out)
7. 2nd and 3 at ASU 42 Joe McKnight rush for a loss of 1 yard to the ArzSt 43.
LDE, 7-tech. USC runs a sweep right. Both guards pull. Davis stands up and sheds Ayles, avoids Alex Parsons attempting to redirect inside and block, and forces McKnight to abandon the outside and cut in.
8. 3rd and 4 at ASU 43 USC penalty 15 yard Pass Interference accepted, no play.
LDE, 5-tech, weakside. Davis attacks the outside and turns the corner, but Barkley passes quickly to his left and the ball is out and into the receivers hands long before Davis can arrive. Offensive pass interference negates the play.
9. 3rd and 19 at USC 42 Matt Barkley pass complete to Damian Williams for 6 yards to the USC 48.
RDE, 5-tech, weakside. Davis runs around and then avoids a cut block by Charles Brown. The pressure forces an underneath route well short of the first.

Davis is listed at 244.
If he spent two seasons bulking up to 255-260, could he be more than just a situational pass rusher? Can he grow into prototypical DE size and be a 3-down guy?

Thanks
So what’s his realistic upside as an NFL player?
Would it be better to trim down and play OLB?
Or could he have some success in a Chris Clemons type role, at his current size?
"Pass rushers enter the world of Okung but never leave." - Morgan
Stand up end, OLB, something in that vein.
Weight won’t make him more agile, and if he’s pass rushing on 80% of his downs, it won’t help him play better. Upside? Maybe Parys Haralson.
Yea he's pretty much a one-trick pony.
He gets off the line and has some speed to pressure the edge, that’s pretty much it. If he develops an inside move then he could be valuable in a rotation. But will probably never even be as good as Chris Clemons haha.
Did you think Tapp had the frame to reach 270?
And what about him makes you think so. Looking at him on film?
252 lbs at the combine.
You have a reason to think he was 270 lbs as a rookie?
I never really thought it through at the time.
I’m not implying there’s a science to it, but Davis looks thicker in the trunk, and like he would lose vital agility if he gained too much weight. That, plus being 8 pounds lighter than Tapp, plus being about two years older than Tapp as a rookie, makes me think Davis can gain some weight, but is closer to his maximum.
That does make sense.
Especially since he is more of a speed player than Tapp ever was. The age makes sense too.
And this is one of the questions I’ve wondered about for quite some time, what people use to determine how much weight a player can gain without it being a detriment. Of course, NFL teams look them over with shorts on at the combine, but plenty of writers make the same statements without looking them over.
He looks good and quick at times rushing the passer
But he can just get straight mauled by run blocking against bigger tackles. Check out this youtube clip and you’ll see what I mean. After seeing how he was handled by USC’s OL I’m a little surprised Pete Carroll was so high on him.
That's handy.
A couple quick notes: He’s mis-identified at :48. Also, there are plays missing.
At what point was he “mauled”?
The mauling I noticed was at 1:50
He gets cleared back easily by the RT towards the sideline. It’s actually not as bad as how I remembered it. I posted the clip from memory having watched it right after he got drafted and my memory was he got handled fairly easily against the run. Watching it again he doesn’t look that bad. And who knows how things will change if he doesn’t start in a 3-point stance. I can see him causing problems for slower tackles.
yeah, I missed that too
Just because the OT actually has a good down doesn’t mean Davis got Mauled. I thought he looked smart, didn’t lose contain, pressured his assignment, and showed good speed. Like you John I think he might get bowled over by the stronger O lines in the NFL, but who knows.
Carroll said immediately after drafting him that he would play end with Clemons
Usually it’s a question of whether or not a 7th round pick makes the team. Carroll said at the post draft press conference that he and Clemons would be supplying the pass rush. Just because he was drafted in the 7th doesn’t mean Carroll isn’t high on him.
And that Konz would be a WR.
Defining where a tweener is going to play is not the same as being high on him. He was being asked whether Davis was going to be a linebacker or an end.
He didn't say one thing about Konz as a football player
I’ll give you the exact quote he said about Davis:
“Davis will play on the side with Chris Clemons and give us the pass rush and the kind of style of play that he’s been accustomed to”, and later in that same conference “Dexter Davis, right at the end of the draft. We played against him for years. He gave our guy Charles Brown a really hard time the last time we played him and worked him in the pass rush that night.”
He didn’t say Konz will play WR with Housh and how Konz worked Taylor Mays when he played USC.
Kind of like the way he was talking about being excited to utilize Tapp before he traded him?
I understand how you took it, but I personally think you are falling into the trap of reading too much into coach-speak.
And I’d love to see the quote in print, I didn’t get to read that interview. Just saw small newspaper quotes that didn’t have that much detail, I’d like to see a thorough interview from him about our draftees, I’d probably enjoy it.
Admitted homer, and most likely the worlds worst scout
But I come away from that tape with a wow. Dude looked pretty damn good at RDE and held his own at LDE. He gave Brown fits. I would think he has a good chance to have a decent career.
It is what it is...
You say our own JM is the world's worst scout?
I disagree. Sadly as a fan he was pretty accurate last year.
I might be a worse scout
But I don’t see him really exploding into the pass rush. I think the best jump he gets is in the play starting around 3:33, where he gets a nice burst and gets around the tackle (though USC sniffs out the blitz and beats it with a screen pass). For the most part, though, it looks like he stands up first and then runs forward. Maybe turning him into a stand-up end eliminates the problem of him coming out of a stance?

Still, for a 7th rounder, I'm pretty stoked
Then again, I want to believe so badly.
It is what it is...
I can't judge my own scouting abilities...
but I AM the 1000th customer on some FG ad. Somehow I was the 1000th yesterday, and now I am again today! I am pumped! I can’t wait to click and see what I’ve won!!!
If Clemons and Foley get hurt and Reed is just a mere mortal
This guy still doesn’t look to bad. Foley looks like he may have some serious upside. He is really fast and looks like he can make a decent tackle. Who do we keep around? I hope we don’t lose him in camp.
Good bye Big Walt.
Speaking of guys who could play Stand Up End, what about E.J. Wilson?
Maybe I’m just ignorant of his skills and abilities, but I thought Wilson was a “tweener” DE/OLB type. Am I mistaken, and is he only considered a “Standard” DE? Maybe Wilson is considered depth behind (or competition for) Lawrence Jackson.
Yep. Sounds like he'll play End on rushing downs
