Minicamp notes: Washington in, Bryant starting, WR/D bits
Already fanshotted the fact that Leon Washington rejoined the team at the currently ongoing, last minicamp, but there's a few too many notes out there that are of interest. From Seahawks.com, Seattle PI and The News Tribune, with supplementary The News Tribune bits here.
On Leon Washington: He's back, doing non-contact individual drills (Seattle.com). Pete Carroll claims he'll be ready for the start of full camp (PI). TNT is impressed by how he's moving around, seemingly at full speed.
On T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Deion Branch: They both rejoined the team, neither participating in team sessions (TNT 2).
On Red Bryant: Red Bryant is working with the #1 Defense opposite Chris Clemons, Pete Carroll confirming he "has moved into a starting role at defensive end" (PI). Still not fully sure what to think of that, but it's very 3-4ish I guess.
On defensive starters: Kelly Jennings was a starting cornerback this time around, with Josh Wilson playing nickel. Hawthorne, Herring and Curry were the starting LBs with Lofa Tatupu injured, Leroy Hill still playing with the 2nd team (TNT).
Impressed by: TNT is impressed by Kevin Vickerson and likes what he's seen of J.P. Losman as more starter-ready than Charlie Whitehurst.
Wide Receivers: TNT's supplementary bit reveals TJ Houshmandzadeh was playing hurt for the first few weeks last year (broken ribs) before his groin started bothering him. Wonder how well he'll return at his age. PI has a lot of PC quotes on WRs in general:
"Deon Butler has had a very good offseason for us and has improved immensely from where we saw him on film last year. Mike Williams has made an impact and the fact he's 6-4 and 240, we like what he brings," Carroll said.
"Golden has had a ton of reps and turns and he has a lot to learn, but he makes things happen and that's what the special guys do. They kind of remind you that they're special. And we have a lot of hope that he'll be a contributor.
"Ben Obomanu has been pretty flashy. So it's a young, emerging group without the experienced guys back and as we add them to it, it'll be very competitive. Let the games begin and let guys battle it out. There are some exciting guys out there."
Walter Thurmond III: has "begun doing some work with the team" (PI).
John Carlson: is awesome (Seattle.com).

Wow. So LoJack got supplanted as a starting DE?
This can’t help his growth.
Admittedly, I’ve not been a huge LoJack fan, but I realize: 1. he’s young, 2. he’s got lots of talent and 3. DE is a high learning curve position.
I’m honestly a little bummed. I think this’ll stunt his growth as a NFL Defensive End.

Maybe it's just cuz there's more they want to explore there.
It’s a mini-camp, not training camp. Might be significant, but best not to read too far into it.

Yeah, just giving Bryant an opportunity
It’s up to LoJack to challenge him.
Still, if the Leo formation is closer to having 3-4 personnel than I thought, and it does look that way with three DTs up front, that’ll make LoJack’s hunt for a job much tougher.

But it's mini-camp, so OH MY GOD I NEED SOMETHING FOOTBALL TO TALK ABOUT
And I really hate the idea of Bryant at end if they’re going to go with an otherwise traditional 4-3 look that keeps Mebane at the 3 tech.
No mention of Branch? Curious...

On T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Deion Branch: They both rejoined the team, neither participating in team sessions (TNT 2).

Now we just got wait for TC to see who really steps up
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
There are a couple of really vague anti Whitehurst quotes out there
But I haven’t seen anything specific to explain it.
He doesn't have Hasselbeck's veteranosity and he doesn't have Losman's arm.
So in limited action like minicamps he’s not really going to stand out. We’re not going to know anything meaningful about him until preseason games when we’ll get to see how he acts in the pocket.
