Tell me what to Watch for at Seahawks Training Camp

No lengthy build up. I would like to spend some time with my wife before the season starts, and my season is starting very soon. I will attend six training camps from Saturday July 31 to Friday August 6. My schedule for the next three weeks: Jeremy Bates offense, training camp, Pete Carroll defense, and then we're in the thick of the preseason. So, as my wife and I call it, I will soon be sequestered to my Hole for the next five (six!) months. And as someone else better said, when I'm snuffed out, I doubt I'll find a swimming pool.

Training camp, what do you want to know? I am never short of subjects to write about, but I want to know, what do you want me to watch for in training camp?

After the jump is a picture of an origami kangaroo.

Value of camp as performance indicator

But also your thoughts on whether training camp is a venue in which an outside observer, such as yourself or the rest of the media, can actually project player performance in a real-game situation. That might also tell us something about whether coaches are able to make those projections.

The theory is that coaches, management, and others, but most importantly coaches and management, place too much importance on camp performance.

And a good origami kangaroo at that

Pleased you’re going to be there for six days of camp and looking forward to the output.

1. Does Curry look like he now ‘gets it’?
2. Does Trufant look nearer the ’07 probowler or the ’09 PI machine?
3. Has Bates really got Matt running bootlegs / deep throws every other passing play?
5. Lofa – closer in build to a large safety (2005) or a DT (2009)?
6. Whitehurst – he at least looks ok in practice…? right…?

by JamesMurphy on Jul 21, 2010 12:54 PM PDT reply actions

Rookies performance obviously

Earl Thomas’s reads at Safety, Okung at blocking, Tate’s hands.

Mike Williams is one I’m curious about. We know he has the hands but can he get separation.

I'm really hoping Mike Williams becomes a star in this system.

Or close to one. Second the M-Will request.

Three things I would like to know

1. The quarterbacks. How is Whitehurst vs Hasselbeck looking? Does Whitehurst really have a shot? How’s his grasp of the offense? Is this really Hasselbeck’s best offseason ever (just like it was last year (and the year before!))?

2. The D-line. Vickerson at 350 pounds, is that going to work? Would any amount of Vickerson be better then Cole? Plus Red Bryant at 330 playing the end. And then the pass rushers. Who’s emerging? Is Clemmon’s going to work?

3. And lastly, perhaps the most important: John Ryan. I’d really like a detailed breakdown of his punting, diagramming his foot motion, release, the arc height and length of his kicks. And how’s Malone doing? Is he pushing Ryan for a spot? Can you even notice the difference? What are their favorite colors? Have they ever ever been in a Turkish prison??

by B.B.Finnegan on Jul 21, 2010 12:59 PM PDT reply actions

Yep, D Linemen, D Linemen, D Linemen

and the younger QBs. And Matt’s health. And the O linemen in Gibbs new system. Watching Alex Gibbs coach will be great fun to watch.

screw jon ryan, he’s a punter fer gawdsakes.

I’ll be at a bunch of the VMAC sessions, and preseason games. When I watch camps, I always focus on the D linemen to notice one thing: who is really working hard and who is slacking. Last year, it was Nick Reed working his tail off in camp, and Terrell refusing to be outworked by anybody. They both made the team against long odds.

The other reason I watch the D line is because most every other position is hard to judge in camp. The RBs are not getting hit, so they look great. The WRs are not getting held, so they look great. The QBs are not getting seriously rushed, so they all look like Peyton. Even the D linemen will look great because the O linemen won’t cut block them in camp, won’t hold much, won’t bite, claw, or any of the normal game-time stuff.

Camp is a lot of fun but the players skills are more clearly tested during the competition of the preseason games. See you at Qwest and the VMAC.

Also, the combinations at Leo and ROLB

Those combinations just might change every week up until September. Maybe we should run a pool to bet who will get the most reps at Leo and at ROLB by season’s end.

the defense

whats kind of alignment are we looking at, depending on situations. how often is clemmons in a two point? does lojack come in often to give a more tradtional look? how often is curry blitzing/hand in the dirt? is the secondary ballhawking and flying around?

obviously, the progression of the rookies and the recovery of thurmond and washington will be excellent topics to cover. offensively, is force still head and shoulders above jj? is matt comfortable throwing to all the new receivers? does branch still blow? how does the line look under gibbs? is gibbs spitting fire and shitting tornadoes like ive always imagined? is carroll a little ray of sunshine?

i cant wait to read what you see john, really looking forward to it

Four things

1. Carlson: we keep hearing about how they’re going to highlight him in the passing game. I’m curious about how that’s actually going to look in terms of where they line him up, etc.

2. The strong safety position battle. Is there really a chance we’re going to see Lawyer Milloy starting in Week 1?

3. D-Line depth: where does LoJack fit in to the scheme? They seem to really like the big bodies, is Terrill finally his way out?

And finally, does Pete Carroll really tell people to “Win Forever”?

Leo Leo Leo Leo

I would like to know, going into the preseason, how Clemons, Reed and Davis are looking at Standup End. Improving the pass rush might be one of the most important matters this team needs to address this season, so the battle for the Leo (and the other defensive end) is very important.

Most curious about Aragorn, BMW and the Leo spot

The high-pick rookies are starting anyway so we’ll see them come the season.

But the big questions are:
1. Is Aragorn’s hair really is luscious as it looks on photographs? … I mean does he look like a competent QB, or like he has the potential to be one.
2. Does BMW look like someone who’s been out of the game for 2 years?
3. Who’s the starting Leeeeeeeeeeeoooooooooo?

Leroy Hill is tough to predict.

He could be cut, he could start, he could be traded, I hope he gets playing time somehow, shows he is still quite good, and gets traded to another team for something of worth.

Matt’s health is a huge one, read this blog on any given week and it’s been discussed a couple times. A lot depends on how much the system puts pressure on Matt, or takes it off, and how well the OL gels pass blocking.

Our DL will have Mebane in the middle, otherwise it’s anyone’s guess. The trend right now is from left to right, Clemons, Mebane, Cole, Red Bryant.

Well, the LG and C situation look settled.

Gibbs and Bates have come out and said that Spencer is the C and Ben Hamilton is the LG. The offensive line looks settled for now. Defensive end looks like a mess, you are spot on with that, and you are right about wondering about Hasselbeck in this offensive system. Both are valid questions that will not really be answered until the season. Any conclusion from training camp likely will be wrong.

If Leroy Hill is not the starter, it will be Hawthorne, who played for Lofa Tatupu last season. It looks like our linebacking system has too many good players, rather than too few.

I will be at the practice(s?) on the 31st, and the 2nd before I go back to CA.

I was one day late on my last trip up to meet in Seattle for the SBN Seattle site, but I’d be interested in meeting you at one of the practices.

I have plenty of questions, most of which I’ll be focusing on myself.

Health: Thurmond III, Washington, Trufant, Hasselbeck. For the first three, do they look like elite athletes again, my expectations are Trufant will, then Washington, then Thurmond. And that might be week 10. For the last three, are they near where they used to be when they looked like productive, great players?

How good is(rookies): All. Plenty of questions about things like ET’s range and ability to get to the ball in the air, Golden’s ability to compete for the ball in the air, various questions about athleticism and ability for the rest of the rookies.

How good is(newbies): Mike Williams. He hasn’t been cut yet, and we all know what he looked like in college. But is he anywhere near consistent or even dominant enough to be a #1 or #2, or is he just a nice #4 WR? Vickerson? Maybe our best chance to be rid of Colin Cole in the next two years, and great value, or nothing at all.

Then various other questions like this one about the ZBS. Does Wrotto, Toledo, Vallos, Gibson, Byers, or someone else look like they are taking to the ZBS well? I’m guessing one of them might be a future starter on the interior of our line. If not them, a new crop next year.

Who really looks like the best Leo? How does Red look at DE? Who is starting in practice at linebacker, strong safety, running back, RCB? Who is kick returning the most?

There are so many questions about this team, which is a lot more exciting than last season.

by cashless on Jul 21, 2010 5:57 PM PDT reply actions

Intangibles

Everyone has hit on the majority of the good stuff. Who are the leaders on this team, old and new? What is the sense of morale, attitude that this team has about itself and its chances; will we get our swagger back?

How does the special teams look, specifically who is doing kickoff returns, who is going to do punt returns?

Team speed. I have to beleive we are a lot faster of a team overall, how do we look in terms of speed.

The deep pass. Will we ever see it return to the land of the Silver & Blue?

Will Kelly Jennings or Kam Chancellor start? Who generally is a huge surprise?

by Christopher M Olson on Jul 21, 2010 7:04 PM PDT reply actions

Cpverage Units

The Seahawks ranked 30th in punt coverage last year and 21st the tear before. Their kickoff coverage ranked 19th last year and 31st in 2008.

What adjustments will they make to improve their coverage units? Would those adjustments affect how many players are kept at a particular position? For example, would the speed/size combination of the leo candidates make the Seahawks more likely to keep an extra defensive end, and conversely keep one less at some other position?

I am very interested in the coaching dynamic

What does Carroll do to command attention, respect, discipline, etc… and what, if any, zen-like, Will Ferrel wannabe moments happen?

Also… the standard:

1) Does Mike Williams have either the strength to out-muscle NFL LB’s and S’s or the speed to outrun NFL CB’s?

2) Just how does the Leo plus 3-3 differ from the traditional alignments, once put to use in practice?

3) Can Hass throw the ball 40 yards?

by trippsixxes on Jul 23, 2010 3:34 AM PDT reply actions

Special Teams

In my opinion one of the most disappointing parst of last season was the return game. with players such as Leon Washington, Earl Thomas, Golden Tate, and Walter Thurmond i can’t imagine they would have forsett or rankin still handling these duties in the future. Does anybody seem to get more reps/ be the clear return men?

also do any of the draft picks look like busts/ not making the team (i haven’t heard e.j. wilsons name mentioned for some time now).
