LeRoy Hill cut?
or compensating for him not counting against the roster on week 1?
The latter
as John already said here.

I'm starting to think we're all valuing Chance too high.
And everybody (myself included) seems to be counting Jamar Adams out. Adams has had a couple years in the league now and the secondary projections John even notes that he could overtake Milloy. We’re undervaluing him.
Adams is playing and performing well and Chancellor is on the sideline.
Plenty of time for that to change, but I can’t continue to push Chance on blind faith.
Dexter David makes final roster?

I'm guessing
He’s going to the PS once Hill is reinstated.
I know we're too used to getting burned by injuries there
but isn’t eight really light for the o-line?
season's over if we get to the point where we're playing 3+ backups anyways
Willis could play guard in a pinch, Wrotto could play tackle in case of apocalypse
Think about who would be the 9th guy
After the Top 8 you’re looking at guys like Gibson and Byers, who are quite fungible. There are plenty of other guys who deserve a roster spot.
Pitts
didn’t we lose out on the Morey comp pick because we signed Chester PItts? I would think that would make him likely to stick. Too many damn moves to keep track of
Doubtful Chancellor can clear waivers for PS
I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul - Invictus
completely agree. adding him would be adding help in stopping the run as well, or
if/when ET lines up over the slot receiver in the nickle/dime….until Walter is completely healthy (if not so already- hard to believe he would be). I would also think he would be valuable on ST on kick-offs as well as punts. But then the question becomes- whose spot does he take if not Adams?
Also- interesting that only 2 QB’s make the list, but ill post on this further down;)
Chancellor
Wonderful analysis overall. My only disagreement is they might keep 5 safeties active roster due to 1) immediate value/Adams, 2) don’t see them taking risk losing 4th rounder / long term potential. If they decide to keep 5, bye bye Pitcock or Terrill.
Marshawn Lynch?
John,
Do you see any possibility of a trade before end of preseason by Seahawks for Lynch. Tradebait being some combination of Julius Jones, Deion Branch, Leroy Hill and/or late 2011 draft pick?
None of those scenarios work
Jones: The Bills don’t need another RB, which is why they’d consider trading Lynch
Branch: Completely untradeable. Too many injuries, getting too old, contract too bulky… this is a non-starter. He’s here till we cut him.
Leroy Hill: They need a OLB, but not one that’s sitting behind bars. We don’t know his legal situation yet, so I doubt the Bills would have interest.
Late Pick: Lynch was a 1st rounder. He’s had success in this league. His value has gone down due to off the field issues but it hasn’t plummeted so much that we could steal Lynch for say a 5th rounder.
Combo Scenario: Separately or together, none of these options work. They’re not desperate to get rid of Marshawn. They’d just as soon keep him and have a 3 headed Monster in that backfield. If we want him we’ll have to sacrifice real value.

People always do this
Name the guys we want to get rid off in “trade scenarios”. But really people, if fans know a player’s lack of value, you can be damned sure another team will.
by Thomas Beekers on Aug 12, 2010 8:49 AM PDT up reply actions
Exactly
I think it’s high time we put the whole “trade Branch” dream scenarios to bed. It’s never, ever going to happen. It’s just not feasible.
by ErictheHawksFan on Aug 12, 2010 8:54 AM PDT up reply actions
Value varies by need of course.
While we are now all of a sudden deep at RB and WR, through injuries on other teams the value of Branch and Jones increases, obviously.
Perhaps Denver might be interested in Jones? They’re hurting for backs, already picking up our scraps, and we have delt with them before.
Branch? Someone will always need a WR. Hell, I remember when there was a team that actually sought the services of Billy McMullin. We won’t get our near our initial investment, but I think it would be worth it just for the roster spot it would afford Chancellor.
Anyone browse enough other teams sites to know of any other teams’ own Branches or Joneses they are looking to clear out. I’m wouldn’t even be holding off for a starter, I’d trade either just for D-Line depth. Could we bring back Rocky Bernard for cheap depth?
by Dizzy Saturn on Aug 12, 2010 9:09 AM PDT up reply actions
Injuries certainly make teams desperate
I’ll concur with that. But the only scenario I could envisage that would allow for a Branch trade is a playoff contending team loses their entire receiving corps to injury. It’s a highly unlikely set of circumstances. Even then, that ludicrous contract could scare potential suitors away.
He’s a good receiver when healthy. Unfortunately, we’re just about the only ones who know that anymore. Most likely scenario for Branch at least in my mind is we keep him and he starts or we release him outright on cut day.

What if the Patriots lost
Welker and Moss? that’s not too crazy to conceive. Welker’s pushing it already, and Moss has been hurt before and is getting old. NE would be hip to bring back their SB MVP, perhaps.
yeah, but that’s the only situation i see…

I'm wondering some things:
1. Can Thurmond earn a spot ahead of Jennings at starting CB?
2. Is it possible Josh Wilson starts?
3. Will the team want two Safeties that can cover – could Babineaux start along side Earl Thomas? If not, will Babineaux play a lot? Who plays in passing situations? I fear Milloy getting abused as teams scheme matchups against him.
4. Who gets bumped (and to where) when Leroy Hill gets back week two?
5. Same question regarding Chester Pitts?
Red Bryant: surprise us!
Thurmond still has a brace on his leg
and is still a rookie learning as fast as he can. Jennings may be light in the loafers, but he’s got skills Thurmond hasn’t learned yet.

why did you mention "safeties that can cover" - and then mention Babineaux?
non sequitur
"Football players are temperamental. That's 90 percent temper and 10 percent mental." - Doug Plank
Perhaps the lesser of two evils.
I have to think Babs is better in coverage than Milloy, Ellison, or Chancellor. He has played Safety and seen significant snaps as a Cornerback and for us, which indicates a modicum of coverage ability, I think.
Red Bryant: surprise us!
well, ok, I'll give Babs a break
but we all know if they end up depending on Babs to cover, they are in trouble. Actually, the safeties are entirely up in the air right now. No one knows what Ellison can do in this defense yet and whether he can take a roster spot from Adams or Babs. Ellison has talent. Safety won’t be settled for a while.

I think you gotta lose Pitcock or Terrill for Hill.
Then maybe Foley or Reed for Pitts. I really feel like we can drop JJ too. The guy just hasn’t shown he can rush very well and it’s likely he declines irreversibly soon.
Though they sink through the Sea, they shall rise again...Death shall have no dominion...
You'd still need to replace JJ with another back.
I don’t know if Ganther can do what JJ can do.
When Pitts is ready to come off the PUP list,
I think the Hawks could afford to cut/waive Ham, Wrotto, or Vallos since Pitts can play either guard spots or possibly RT in a pinch, Willis can play guard or tackle, unger can play center, guard or possibly even tackle if needed. Pitts adds an excellent back-up and makes one of those expendable…
Looks pretty good
But no way they go with only 2 quarterbacks. One of those tight ends is getting cut.
I agree with lemon (one 1 point) and tripps on the QB situation- very interesting on what it would say...
Not having a 3rd quarterback on the roster or the practice squad (Losman wont be on the PS)says the Hawks would have a whole lotta confidence in either Hass staying healthy and/or Whitehurst being a capable back-up and/or starter should Hass struggle or find himself injured. And with the previous 2 years finding Hass injured and the simple fact that Whitehurst has not seen any professional time at QB other than practice, srimmages and pre-season- not having a 3rd QB who knows the system inside and out would be a critical mistake and oversight in my opinion. SInce Seattle does not have a young QB they can place on the PS, I believe they will roster all 3 QB’s at the expense of another player- again the question becomes- WHO?
Also- i fogot the TE aspect of lemons post....
if they cut/waive a TE, i think it has to be Morrah. While I think they will hold on to all 4, if they did drop one Morrah seems like the logical decision. They went out and got Baker to be a blocking TE on running or passing downs in their 2 TE sets. McCoy would not make it to the practice squad if waived and he has imense talent and has to be held on to to see if he matures and develops. Can u see him split out wide in short yardage/goal-line situations where Hass either throws a jump ball or a slant where he can use his body to shield off the defender ala Whitten, Gates, or Gonzalez. He can be that type of player down the road. Morrah on the other hand, while a solid TE and steadily improving, is a hold-over fro last years draft/team and has no direct ties to the current coaching staff. Again- that being said, I think the Hawks retain all 4 and uses them at FB, H-back as well as traditional TE.
Shanahan typically runs with two quarterbacks.
And Bates retained only Cutler and Patrick Ramsey in 2008. So there is a way, precedent even.
by John Morgan on Aug 12, 2010 12:23 PM PDT up reply actions
But this is "Always Compete" Pete, not Shanahan
And I just don’t see two QBs out of this roster. Hass is too injury-prone and Whitehurst too unknown.

You know what would allow us to keep Chance?
Cutting Julius Jones. Oft were the times I would defend JJ and encourage us all to give him a second chance. But he just doesn’t fit well enough here IMO.
Though they sink through the Sea, they shall rise again...Death shall have no dominion...
Being a huge Notre Dame homer which of course means any former Irish homer as well,
I would not be saddened or upset to see Jones traded or released should he not produce. However, for this to happen I think Seattle either has to make a trade for another quality RB or Forsett has to be the obvious #1, Washington must stay healthy, AND Ganther (or someone else {Forsett}) must be able to take charge of the GL/short-yardage situations. Otherwise he stays around for the whole season while Seattle drafts or signs a compliment “brusier” to match with Forsett/Washington for SY/GL/late in the game situations.
Promise thats my last post for the night- just got on a role i guess.
I don't think Jones will be a Seahawk
If he is ineffective in preseason.
Jones is good without being outstanding.

Have a hard time believing a Hass-led team can afford to go only 2 deep at the position
Regardless of how bad Losman’s been playing, it’ll be interesting to see if they truly have that much faith in Hass/CW to forgo the 3rd QB for a 4th TE.
Still could have him if they thought he was worth it
Or any team for that mater.

He looked damn good last preseason
Impressed me for a 3rd String. We really should have put him in somewhere in the last 3 games.
There are always options out there.
If we go down to our 3rd string QB, we’re screwed for this year anyhow.
Jackson
If Lawence Jackson is down to third string then he needs a change of scenery. Trade him or cut him. I would move Branch also. Send him to the Jets for Revis. We are deep at WR. Keep Toledo on the practice squad as we really do not have a backup LT and he has the athleticism to play the position given a year under Gibbs. JJ can be replaced by Ganther.
Branch for Revis
This will never ever happen even if we threw in our 1st and 2nd round picks along with Branch. I agree with you regarding LoJack, however. If he has no future here and we can wrangle some value in return for him (to Chicago?) then let’s move him.
by ErictheHawksFan on Aug 12, 2010 7:58 AM PDT up reply actions
Revis
Revis wants $12 million per year and $100+ million total. This late in the year there are not alot of trade options for NYJ. Payrolls and rosters are pretty well set. Paul Allen may be the only owner that would empty the bank for him. That said, some salary would have to be sent back to NY to make any deal work. Branch is the logical choice. NY could use another receiver. Jennings and LoJack could be included. They need a replacement CB and DE, too. I agree that a deal is unlikely, however. Talents like Revis are rarely moved and I think NY will work out a deal with him. Should they decide to trade him sending him out of their division to Seattle makes sense if they can get something back they want.
I like your thought process on this
But even if you put Branch, Jennings, LoJack and a 2nd round pick together it doesn’t = Revis. I’m not certain we have anything they’d want for Revis. Besides, despite it all, in the long run I think they’ll pay the man.
by ErictheHawksFan on Aug 12, 2010 9:29 AM PDT up reply actions
No, that will never happen.
The Jets need another receiver? Why? They don’t throw to the ones they have. They run the ball 60% of the time.
They’re not trading Revis. They’ll wait him out. They have confidence that their current D will hold up until he gets tired of not playing.
You really think the Jets would do that trade?

Hard to argue.
I like what the team has set up, and I like what you are thinking when you set up your roster.
There are only three moves I see possibly happening. First is Hill, and whenever he comes back he will move in behind or back in as the starter in a week or two over Hawthorne (if they keep Hill). In turn I see McCoy being the odd man out (once again, if they keep Hill, which I think they will this year).
Second is the battle between Chancellor and Adams. I can see either winning that battle in camp (and preseason), and I won’t be shocked if Kam wins that backup job.
Lastly, I don’t think the team goes with only 2 QB’s. I can’t buy the team is sold on Whitehurst yet. Sorry, I don’t buy into the Whitehurst hype train, but I’m more than willing to give the guy more than a chance to win the job over Losman. I think JP is a good QB that played on some bad teams. He came in late and is behind both Matt and Charlie, but I’m not so sure he is that far behind Whitehurst, and I’m not so sure with Matt’s issues over the last two years with injuries that the team is willing to go into the season with only one backup QB. With that said I would love to see the team keep all four TE’s, but with the QB situation still in a little bit of flux, I see either Morrah or McCoy missing the 53 man roster. I just can’t buy that the team is SOLD on Charlie as the only backup.
I believe JP Losman is a bad QB on a bad team
But maybe he can prove me wrong. Outside of the QB chase the positioning in the secondary is crucial for me. Is Kelly Jennings out of chances? Can Kam beat out Jamar? Where will Jordan Babineaux end up on the chart? Considering how awful our secondary has been in the last two seasons this is the most important battle to me.

For all we're supposed to have a crappy team...
and we kinda do, I still don’t expect to win over 7 games, there’s some nice pieces on the top but QB & pass rush, you know…that looks to me like a finer, more talented practice squad than anything in the Ruskell or Holmgren eras.
That might be revisionist history on my part, I don’t know, but I like 4 guys on there, it’s great.
For the best that he doesn't
He is battling history even attempting to return. The more time he can recover from his knee surgery the better. If I were the Seahawks, I would keep him on the PUP list as a precaution. It turns a potential roster hole into a kind of depth.
by John Morgan on Aug 12, 2010 12:26 PM PDT up reply actions
Just seems like a damn waste
of money to me. It would seem they had no intention of him playing in the first six games at all. Its sort of like the Mariners paying $1.5 million to Eric Berdard. Sounded like a great idea at the beginning (for depth) and when he doesn’t throw a pitch all year it essentially ends up being a bad, $1.5 million, bet.
I don’t recall his contract specifics but I remember getting the impression it was a bit rich.
Yeah... but no salary cap this year, right?
So if there’s any year to grab and sit on a guy, this is the one.
Makes sense to keep Pitts around
especially since Ben Hamilton is no youngster, and none of the backup Seahawks O linemen are built for zone blocking. Pitts could be the #1 backup at OG and OT if he can get healthy.

FB(s)
DEN’s ’08 roster started with 2 FBs: Peyton Hillis and S.Larsen. They also kept a center Kory Lichtensteiger that only played as a FB in 2-FB plays (kneel downs, goal line). They also used their TEs as occasional FBs. They used 2-FBs in power run plays (plus a few 2-FB sets that ended up in passes – misdirection) but thought that would be a way Bates might help the power running game(?)
