49ers deal Kentwan Balmer to Seahawks
As per Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.
Balmer's time with the 49ers came to an end when he went AWOL from training camp. Terms of the deal are not known...
EDIT: Matt Maiocca tweets that the 49ers get a 6th round pick.

I was hoping to see this move
Interested to see the draft comp though… hopefully a low round, based on performance trade
Not loving it
I hope this doesn’t indicate Scott McCloughlan has any influence on our roster moves, after how he left the Niners roster…
Guess we’re just trying to salvage talent as we’ve done before, and he’s depth if nothing else. He’d have been solid enough depth with the Niners if not for the attitude problem, which he’ll hopefully leave behind.
Just hope we got him for next-to-nothing.
I'm definitely for it.
Late round pick traded for first round talent (that had one single year in the league) is a move I’d pursue any day of the week.
Especially on D-line.

1st round talent or no, he's not worth more than a very late-round, condititonal pick
They were ready to dump him on the waivers I’d presume, we turned their problem into ours.
Sorry, it’s prolly my Niners-loathing speaking :P

I'm confident we did get Balmer for next to nothing
And I’m sure McCloughan was asked his opinion, but presume that was the extent of his influence. Carroll and Schneider aren’t handing the keys to anybody.

McCloughan actually left the 49ers in great shape
Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, Patrick Willis, Dashon Goldson, Manny Lawson, Ahmad Brooks, Joe Staley, Parys Haralson, Takeo Spikes, Aubrayo Frankin and Justin Smith were all brought in by McNolan (McCloughan+Nolan)

I remember not being terribly excited about him in the draft
Did he show anything exciting his rookie year before getting hurt?
Nope
He had more kick returns than tackles as a rookie.

Scouting report on Balmer indicates a possible fit as 3-4 DE
Balmer has decent size at 6-5 and 295 pounds, but he can be labeled as a tweener at the next level. He could be an end in a 3-4 defense or a tackle in a 4-3. He’d need to bulk up a bit to play tackle, but he has a big frame and plenty of room to add some weight.
It’s not all rosy, however:
Prior to his senior season, many wondered if Balmer would live up to his potential. Now it becomes a question of whether or not he can keep up that level of play and adapt to the NFL. In order to do so, he will need to show that he can consistently keep his motor running and go strong play after play. He is extremely strong and athletic and has enough quickness to hold his own when pursuing the ball carrier.
Balmer will be labeled by many as a boom or bust type player. His potential is through the roof, but nobody is quite sure if he can keep it all together enough to be an effective player in the NFL. His great physical tools and high ceiling will make him a borderline first round pick.

Well if anyone can motivate him
Maybe its Pete Carroll?
by Scruffy Lefty on Aug 16, 2010 9:38 AM PDT up reply actions
I think his motivation was linked to his dissatisfaction with his position on the 49ers line
Not sure to what extent, or if it’d at all change on our line.
"Pass rushers enter the world of Okung but never leave." - JM
His position in the depth chart
That’s not likely to change immediately now that he’s with us, though PC might sell him the idea that he can earn the job, which he might not have believed with the Niners.
by Thomas Beekers on Aug 16, 2010 9:43 AM PDT up reply actions
Nono - you misunderstand
I think he was playing a position on the defensive line that he didn’t want to play (DT vs. DE, for example), not his position on the depth chart.
If he wanted to play end, but was shoehorned into tackle, he’ll likely be happy about this move (because I highly doubt Carroll plays this guy at tackle).
"Pass rushers enter the world of Okung but never leave." - JM
Well,
the 49ers put him at end even though he played tackle at UNC. While he came out of the draft at 295, his official weight on NFL.com is 315. My hope is that we can put him at tackle where he belongs and can, like Culter said, put Terrill on the roster bubble. Whatever, 6th round pick, competitioncompetitioncompetitionwinfreva.

I kind of pictured him a bigger 34 end.

Besides, when did the world decide that Singletary was all of a sudden
some world beating, ass-destroying mega-motivator? Just because he helped prevent Vernon Davis from nose-diving out of the league? That’s just 1 guy for crying out loud. Niner fans need add a little perspective on their coach.

It's amazing how young players get better in their second and third years.
Correlation != Causation.
The profile is exactly the type we've been adding for our D-line.
Between Red, EJ Wilson, and Balmer we could have a nice rotation. I noticed Red moving inside on some downs. Balmer might be able to do that or take Red’s DE position when he slides in to DT.
Red Bryant: surprise us!
The rare inter-divisional trade
Revenge for Darrell Jackson?
I like the move for the Seahawks. Anytime you can get a former first round pick, while he’s still young, for a ‘late rounder’ it seems like acceptable risk.
I don't get it.
As little as LoJack has shown since being drafted in the 2008 first round, Balmer has shown less. And now he was a no-show in camp. Where is Balmer supposed to fit in with Bryant, Jackson and EJ Wilson around?
by Suburban Shocker on Aug 16, 2010 9:50 AM PDT reply actions
Balmer was injured and barely played last year.
So saying “he showed nothing” is a bit misleading.
"Pass rushers enter the world of Okung but never leave." - JM
He played quite a bit last year
But his play didn’t warrant a move up on the depth chart (he couldn’t surpass Demetric Evans). He did get hurt but he wasn’t doing anything before that.

As long as we didn't give up too much (anything), I like this move.
John’s post about why Seattle wouldn’t and shouldn’t have drafted Balmer is now kind of a reason to pick him up.
If Seattle needs depth at the 3 and a possible successor to Bernard, then it would make sense that who they draft is a 3 tech and fits their scheme, right? Strike one, strike two. Balmer is more of a Nose Tackle, 3-4 end, or 1 tech. Assuming he realizes his potential, Balmer could make a decent run stuffer with some ability to rush the passer. Balmer doesn’t possess a particularly fast first step and beats blockers by simply overwhelming them. Seattle runs a single gap penetrating defense. Balmer would be badly mismatched at their 3, and would be behind both Mebane and Tubbs at the 1.
Agreed
and a lot of John’s reasons in that post quickly became inoperative, as our DL fell apart in short order. On raw talent, Balmer would seem to have the ability to be the backup to Bane that we currently lack. He’s not ever likely to get there, given his history to date, but as a cheap flyer, he’s worth a shot. You give up a late-round pick, you’re trading a player who probably won’t become anything for a player who probably won’t become anything but has a much higher ceiling if he does; it’s a good risk.

I like this move..
Assuming we aren’t giving up anything higher than round 5. I agree with the above that you are trading someone unlikely to stick for someone unlikely to stick.. I think the move is nice though given the current composition of the team. Balmer can compete right away for PT in our D-line.
Of course, the 9ers clearly refer Derek Walker..
http://blog.seattlepi.com/football/archives/189418.asp
A player we gave away for nothing at all. Not only did we not get a piece in return, we did it for no reason whatsoever. We added Mike Hass to the roster. I can’t blame the current FO for this, but it’s an interesting factoid to put our D-line transactions in perspective.

What kind of contract does Balmer have?
No one seems to be mentioning the salary, which I’m assuming is significant given he was a first-rounder.
Never mind. Did my own research.
7/24/2008: Signed a five-year, $8 million contract. The deal contains $6 million guaranteed, including a $1.6 million signing bonus. Another $3.5 million is available through incentives. 2010: $583,000, 2011: $622,000, 2012: $700,000, 2013: Restricted Free Agent
Typically in trades
those guarantees are accelerated and paid by SF, then we can cut him without penalty I think

Didn’t the Pitts signing cancel out the comensatory pick?

Impossible to figure out right now
But yeah, a guesstimate is that we won’t see any compensatory picks last year.

by Thomas Beekers on Aug 16, 2010 12:03 PM PDT up reply actions
Morey's retirement cancels out Morey
And unless Pitts does something, Seattle should be in line for a pick.
I don't think the NFL has ever made the exact process public
And for all we know, it could change when they re-do the current CBA.
But there’s a a blogger named AdamJT13 who tries predicting the picks every year and figuring out the formula. He’s been fairly accurate. It’s a good resource to check out for info: Link
"I'm tired of chasing after my dreams. I'll just find out where they're going, and catch up later." - Hedberg
The 4th round* comp pick would be for losing Nate to free agency.
Morey signing and then making a probowl on special teams would have jeopardized that, as comp picks are rewarded by some enigmatic equation that determines the difference in production lost and production added. I’m think it only counts free agency though, so trading for Balmer shouldn’t impact the Hawks comp picks at all.
*Speculative, could be a later round.

I like it, for Ancient Mariner’s reason. If he sticks, he has a much higher ceiling than your average 2011 6th rounder, and if he doesn’t we have an extra 6th round pick in 2011 to replace him. And there was nobody on the roster who can back up Me! Bane!!!

Value of 6th rounders to move up in draft?
The only potential negative I can think of with this move is, whether or not it will hinder our ability to move up in next years draft to get a top QB. Perhaps there is not a whole lot of value given to a sixth in such an instance, but I would think the FO would want all resources available, just to be sure to have a shot at Locker, Mallet, or Luck.
On the flip side, I suppose it could allow them a mid-rounder they were going to use to target a lineman prior.
…of course I may just be Madden-izing here too.
I think your first thought was the correct one.
According to the draft pick value chart, the #5 pick is 1700 points. The 5th pick of the 6th round is 26.4 points. So that’s not a big enough piece to worry about, especially to prevent the FO from passing an opportunity like this one.
Here’s the chart I found at CBSsports.
No way
