Lawrence Jackson Traded to Detroit
Well this is odd I suppose.
According to the Seattle PI's Greg Johns, Lawrence Jackson has been traded to the Detroit Lions for an undisclosed 2011 draft pick.
#Seahawks trade Lawrence Jackson to Detroit for undisclosed 2011 draft pick ... the reverse Kentwan Balmer move.
More as it comes.

Not really
probably valued a second round player in the draft but no real red flags. Starting ready and still has a lot of playing time ahead, no injury problems and no pressing need to get rid of him.
Perhaps, but as we've seen all off-season, teams generally aren't willing to part with high draft picks.
I think most people’s read on Jackson is that he’s decent but unspectacular. He does not have elite pass rush ability and I don’t think he even has that potential — his upside seems to be good, not great. I don’t think he starts on Detroit’s line right away, though he could be a rotational player.
If Seattle was pursuing a DE on another team, and you heard that we were acquiring someone equivalent to LJ, would you be happy about giving up a 3rd round pick? I sure wouldn’t.
Mildly interested actually
3rd rounder doesn’t break the bank, and their team had 26 sacks last year(2 less than Seattle). LoJack’s 4.5 sacks ties him for second place on the Lions last year and it gets someone competent next to Suh
6th round? Is that really the best we could do for LJ?
And why shop him anyway? I’m confused.
I guess the next question that pops up after WTF? is, “Would you rather have had Balmer or Jackson, assuming the 6th-rounders are a wash?”
Balmer
cuz we know what LJ gives us…..not much.

He didn't mean reverse in the sense you are thinking..
Reverse in that we traded away a recent defensive line first round pick for a future pick. The pick is undisclosed, we are hoping it is better than a 6th..
by michaelfox99 on Aug 18, 2010 11:58 AM PDT up reply actions
We had too many DEs on the roster
It wasn’t if we were going to trade LoJack, but when.
I really hope we got better than a 6th round pick for him, though. A DE who has played the last two years and was not holding out? Definitely worth more than Balmer.
With what Lo Jack has shown,
4.5 sacks last year, only a third year player, I would hope that we got more in return than we gave for Balmer.

Based on the offseason I'm inclined to think we're not getting much back.
The front office seemed to be more interested in moving players that didn’t fit or they weren’t fond of than trying to get any kind of value back for them.
It's still depth from a thin line
we could turn that into leverage right?
Which strikes me as bizarre
since any random person can realize that what may not be worth much to one person, may be worth something to someone else. LoJack may not fit our scheme at all, but Carroll and crew have to realize that he’s worth something to someone else.
WHAAAAT!?!?!?!

Maybe my comment didn’t stick out enough, hmmm….
Though they sink through the Sea, they shall rise again...Death shall have no dominion...
It ends in an exclamation point.
As such, the “WHAT” turns into a complaint, rather than a question, which would have been the case if it had ended with a question mark.
Sadly, I’ve thought about this before.
Tapp for Clemmons, just lower stakes
Acquiring a player they believe fits the scheme, jettisoning a player they think does not.
This FO/coaching staff obviously has a lot of faith in their ability to scout & project. Let’s hope they’re right.

Heard this on the radio too.
Detroit made the contact, apparently, so it sounds like this wasn’t a pre-waiver move like Balmer and Hawks fans can expect better return than the 9ers were forced to take for Balmer.

AT LEAST WE TRADED LOJACK OUT OF THE FREAKING DIVISION!
So that still makes us smarter than the Niners. Right?
I need to see what we get back before I pass judgement...
though I am surprised.
LoJack who?
I was jazzed when we drafted LJ but he hasn’t shown me shit since. Carroll’s D scheme is massive up front except for small and quick as hell at the Leo. LJ was a tweener, and an underperforming one at that.
Look, this team has been 9 and 23 the last two seasons. If Carroll wants to fire everyone connected with it, tough shit. NFL = Not For Long and when you lose 2 out of 3 times you step on the field, you don’t get to control your own destiny.
Hope it was a 3rd or 4th at least we got in return. Won’t be PO’d if it wasn’t.

If it's a 6th for LJ?
I’ll feel less than ecstatic, but if you look at the talent Caroll and Schneider have assembled in the draft and the reclamation projects that didn’t cost us anything, honestly I’m more concerned about the roster spot they freed up than I would getting value in return for a player who ultimately was worthless to us.
by BigUglyFatDude on Aug 18, 2010 12:34 PM PDT up reply actions
Very annoyed
The same return the Niners got for a player that forced his way out, despite LoJack “outproducing” Balmer and simply being a system cut? It would be atrocious.

I'd be annoyed and concerned that it's a continuing trend roster moves that are moderately to extremely puzzling.
They’ve done a good job selling me on their ability to draft, but I’ve still got big reservations about their ability to sign and trade players.
I would be more concerned if it was players they brought in.

All I'll say is I don't vehemently hate these moves anymore
I just have a hard time finding a whole lot of positives in them. I’d rather see what happens if they play LoJack than deal him for a sixth round pick that will likely amount to nothing in the future.
A lot of times though those 6th rounders get packaged to move up in that draft.
by Scruffy Lefty on Aug 18, 2010 12:52 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm starting to have the mindset that draft picks as a whole are becoming a tad overvalued.

Value is dictated by the market at the time you decide to sell
And there just aren’t many trades in the NFL. Plus the advantage gained by moving a player that doesn’t fit anymore. He isn’t blocking a player who does or taking a roster spot from other positions.

Shouldn't we wait to find out what the Seahawks got back before deciding on the lameness of this trade?
Because if it’s Calvin Johnson and Detroit’s 1st round pick…well, that’s certainly unlame.
If we get a third I'll be okay, higher than that I'll be happy.
I’m rather doubtful that’s the case based on the larger body of offseason moves.
There is very little chance it is higher than a 4th
by lemonverbena on Aug 18, 2010 12:59 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, I would be surprised if it's even that high.
I’d be happy with a fourth though, considering how out of place LoJack had become.
If Balmer & LoJack are comparible talents, and the former is a better scheme fit than the latter, then what's the problem?
LoJack produced more because he played more, but it’s still unclear who will have the better career. Maybe we should have kept both, but I think our roster size was going to make that difficult.
I don’t think we lose that much with these trades, if we lose at all.
Because theres no reason they couldn't have had both.
And Balmer has shown he’s willing to disappear if he feels he’s not getting what he deservers.
Good point
But I don’t think the Seahawks were going to keep Bryant AND Wilson AND LoJack to fill just one position (LDE).
With all the young and inexpensive talent the Seahawks brought in, they probably figure they’d need to move a piece or two to get everyone else in the 53-man roster.
I think everyone needs to ask themselves...
If Seattle traded a 3rd round pick for a DE of Jackson’s limited accomplishment and upside, would you be happy about it? I definitely would not be. And if we wouldn’t be happy about giving up a third, why would another team?
He was good at what he did in college weighing 270.
Not nearly quick enough to carry that amount of weight in the pros. Seemed like he was effective last year being stout at the point of attack, but Red is just better built for that, and LoJack doesn’t have Kerney-like quicks to play Leo.
Sounds basically like Jackson for Balmer, plus a slightly higher pick. Likely a 5th. Even a 6th would be fine as Detroit will suck much more than us this year, so it’ll be higher than the one we traded away.

From Danny O'Neil's blog...
8/17: Jackson’s return to practice presented an opportunity to ask him about what seems to be somewhat of a position switch. Coach Pete Carroll said Monday Jackson would be playing the Leo, which is the pass-rushing end that lines up on the weakside of the offensive line.
“They told me their plans,” Jackson said, “and right now, the only focus I have is going out there and getting better as a player at whatever position they have me playing.”

Yes, the Lions are on their way up….from winning only 2 games in the past 2 seasons. Both teams have made improvements since 2009, but the Seahawks were obviously on much higher ground.
Our climb out of the depths of the NFC is much easier than Detroit’s.
I love the talent on the Detroit roster
Megatron is not just top-10, he has full potential to be the best WR in football.
Add in talent like Pettigrew, Jahvid Best, and even Louis Delmas, and they flashing some stuff.

If they shore up their gaping holes along the o-line, linebacking crew and secondary. They have a few studs but not enough average (or slightly above-average) players to get them to .500 this season.
They could shock a few teams this season, though.

I just hope we did better than a 6th round pick
- LJ wasn’t holding out
- He has had a decent career, albeit not stellar
- He still arguably projects more upside than Balmer
- He is a reasonably quality backup at worst and an eventual starter at best, which is better than most 6th round picks who average a year in the league
Still smells like another “Tapp” move to me, but as they say, we will have to wait on Clemon’s performance and what we get for our draft pick
Pretty much what I was thinking.
And yet, I fear that the current FO is all too happy to give up a valuable asset for next to nothing because of a perceived lack of fit. They don’t seem to grasp that trades should be based on market value, rather than intrinsic value to the seller.

His pass rush underwhelming, his technique only ok. With Balmer there is at least the potential that maybe a switch of scenery could have different results. I see no reason why keeping him around to consume a spot was going to result in something different than we’ve already seen.
Solid Move
Zero to little risk, and we get to see PC/JS shaking up the roster in an area where we need more explosiveness. Well done in my mind. They should keep doing this, it is so nice to see a FO that “does” instead of “hopes”
Lol
They seem to be alright with this:

Though they can’t remember Julian freaking Peterson. Grawr.
Though they sink through the Sea, they shall rise again...Death shall have no dominion...
They do?
They don’t seem very excited to me, especially since it’s a former first-round pick.
Even they are talking about the SeaLions.
Well by "alright"
I didn’t mean “All is right”, just “okay”.
Though they sink through the Sea, they shall rise again...Death shall have no dominion...
LOUD ANGRY NOISES
Actually I’m not that worried about it until I see two things:
1. What we actually get
2. If Balmer performce. LJ was nearly a non-factor.
If either one of those is a positive, then it was an overall good move.
What does the Balmer move have to do with this?
They don’t even play the same position.

Very good call.
We shouldn’t over-examine the two moves as too much of a planned strategy.
I was thinking about moving one first rounder for another
Not exact same position. We had a first rounder not contributing at first round level and we get a first rounder who may contribute and move from 6th to something else in the draft. Its got a little tint of rose colored glasses, but I don’t think its that much of a reach.
No
That’s assuming several things. If we had knowledge that, say, the Hawks were holding on to LoJack until they had more Dline depth, then yes, you could argue this.
Right now we have two moves made close together for two young players that play different positions in the team. One brought in because he fits, one evicted because he doesn’t. That doesn’t make one a direct replacement for the other.

Two defensive line back ups, one brought in because he fits the scheme and the other shipped out the next day because he doesn't.
That sure sounds like they replaced LoJack with Balmer to me.
That's like saying
if we shipped out a safety then brought in a CB, the CB replaced the safety. Two DBs moved, one brought in then the other shipped out the next day.
It’s still two different positions. Red Bryant is taking LoJacks spot, not Balmer.
Now with more lemon bars!
Last I heard Balmer was moving inside to be DT
Bryant has already moved outside to be a DE. Balmer is likely to try and replace Terrile/Cole.
Now with more lemon bars!
You are correct
But you can correlate the two as part of an overall plan and if we get a contributor for a marginal one and move up in the draft then it was a success.
You have to concede that.
And give the clap to Brett Favre.

Give the clap to Chilly first. of course.

One underachieving 1st-round Ruskell pick who started too often down,
one more to go.
Though they sink through the Sea, they shall rise again...Death shall have no dominion...
Seriously. Refreshing FG this many times can't be good for the server.
But it’s def good for John’s pageview metrics! =P

Unique views matter, hits…less so.
I’ve been keeping my eye on the usual newsies but not even a sigh or a whisper. Everyone is too busy talking about Britfar, still.

Goddamn I used to love Favre.
Now he’s just a douche. Oh well, I always liked Elway and Favre more.
(sorry, my Elway days precede my Seahawk days).
*snap*
It blows my mind to think that Red Bryant essentially beat out LJ for the starting spot.
Yup. Wow. Weird.
I vow to never post a cartoon picture of spurting diarrhea on a credible blog.
/dick joke
Bryant has always had a load of talent
and was a gift when we picked him up as late in the draft as we did. Now if he could just add some consistency…
Now with more lemon bars!
Who'd a thunk it?
If it works Carroll/Quinn/Bradley are geniuses. If not… woo boy…

Now is the winter of our discontent
Made glorious summer by this 6th round pick;
And all the shitty trades that lour’d upon our team
In the deep bosom of forgetfulness buried.

While there are many that bemoan this trade and our front office.....
The last MLB off season we all adopted the phrase “In Jack we trust”. And then we have the current mariner season. Time will tell on this trade and all others. But I like the fact, that our front office is making moves, and not sitting on their hands doing nothing.
