2007 draft class, how did we do?
It's said it takes three years to find out how the draft class succeeds, although this years seems to be very nice..
So, what was at 2007?
| 2 | 55 | Josh Wilson | DB | 03/11/1985 | Maryland |
| 3 | 85 | Brandon Mebane | DT | 01/15/1985 | California |
| 4 | 120 | Baraka Atkins | DE | 08/28/1984 | Miami |
| 4 | 124 | Mansfield Wrotto | OG | 10/12/1984 | Georgia Tech |
| 5 | 161 | Will Herring | LB | 08/28/1983 | Auburn |
| 6 | 197 | Courtney Taylor | WR | 04/07/1984 | Auburn |
| 6 | 210 | Jordan Kent | WR | 07/24/1984 | Oregon |
| 7 | 232 | Steve Vallos | OT | 12/28/1983 | Wake Forest |
and the 1st was traded for Branch.. (he's done quite ok, although Pats traded the pick further for 49ers for 4th rounder 2007, which was used to get Randy Moss, and 10th overall 2008, where they picked Jerod Mayo. SF picked LT Joe Staley)
Counting Branch in, there are:
3 starters (assuming Pistol starts), Mebane maybe even pro bowl caliber
3 backups
2 in other teams: Atkins now a Bronco, though he did have 6 sacks in his first season, more than any1 for us last year and Kent at Rams
1 out of the league
Not that bad, after all.

Yeah, looks like he has 2 career sacks.
Maybe in his first preseason? Although I don’t ever remember him catching fire in the preseason.

not sure of preseason stats
I just confused stat line numbers, they were not on straight line with the headers.
Success: Wilson, ME! BANE!
Decent-to-good depth: Herring, Wrotto
Bad: Vallos
Out of the NFL: Taylor, Kent
I thought we did quite well.
Nick Garcia is the Brian Russell of MLS but 10 times worse.
I certainly wouldn't consider Vallos a bad pick at all.
He’s not very good, but he’s serviceable depth that can back up almost any position in a pinch. Pretty good for a seventh round pick.
I'd say Herring is a very successful 5th rounder.
He has starting experience and is a value. And considering the spot he was taken in, Vallos has proved to be a good pick as well. He’s at least been partly serviceable and has been called on to start.

Very well considering the 1st really was lost
Just well if you have to include Branch in as the first. He has overall disappointed. Mostly because of injury, but still disappointing.
I'm happier with Branch
than with Jennings or Jackson. I sooo hope Curry pans out…
Though they sink through the Sea, they shall rise again...Death shall have no dominion...
Yes
But if you consider just this draft and count the actual production of Branch, it kinda takes the shine off of it.
Branch was a bust for Seattle lets just be honest.
Never earned that 1st round value.

It goes back to the wonderful discussion of how do you judge a bust, by the process or the result
It was a great process since we definitely got 1st round talent for our first round pick. Results wise though it was a bust. You can’t blame the FO or the process for it being a bust, so it was a good process, but results wise it was.
The can of Sprite was delicious.
Thank you, Walter Jones.

How do you grade your straight and flush draws?
Hopefully not by whether you make your hand or not.

cards? really?
it’s not even close to the same thing.

Not a perfect comparison, but it's a serviceable analog.
Anyway made my point with more pith.

It's a line from, I think, Dave Henderson
If memory serves: you can trade Ichiro for a can of sprite, but even if Ichiro breaks his femur and that sprite tastes really good, that doesn’t mean it was a good trade.

Yep. (Although I'm pretty sure the author was Derek Zumsteg.)

No they don't and even if they did Branch isn't a bust.
He should have been better but he wasn’t bad.
WR stats don't lie,
2006: 53 rec. 725 yards 4 TD
2007: 49 rec 661 yards 4 TD
2008: 30 rec 412 yards 4 TD
2009: 45 rec 437 yards 2 TD
c’mon that’s not 1st round material….
Bust

Actually it is.
Branch has exceeded what should be expected of receiver drafted with the pick the Hawks traded.
What do you mean when you say bust? Jamarcus Russell, Jarvis Moss and Craig Davis are busts. Branch has been a decent player.
You can't really disagree with what the average career stats of the fourth wide receiver taken in a draft.
who says we would have used that pick on a WR?

If you're comparing Branch to a first-round non-WR then your point is just confusing.
Thank you, Walter Jones.
Thank you, Ken Griffey Jr.
Think about it...
Why would we need to use that pick on a WR?
It’s a draft pick, we could have used it on an O-Lineman, a DE, anything.

Then you're not really comparing him to anything but "what might have been."
That makes your judgement of “bust” purely arbitrary and indefensible.
Thank you, Walter Jones.
Thank you, Ken Griffey Jr.
Actually
“Purely arbitrary and indefensible” would mean, quite literally, “not true”.
The whole thing really comes down to whether you believe someone is a bust when he’s not a moderate success. Branch did ok. Hence he’s not a bust. The bust label really is pulled out right quick.

Not entirely accurate, Vasilii.
A statement can be arbitrary and indefensible and still be true. “There are two moons of Saturn that humans have not yet discovered” is a possible example. I don’t know whether it’s true or not, but it certainly could be. The question is whether a statement can be arbitrary and indefensible yet true and known to be true by the person making it.
Thank you, Walter Jones.
Thank you, Ken Griffey Jr.
It means you can't back it up.
Arbitrary and indefensible makes for weak arguments and uninteresting discussion.
Good: “Hasselbeck is declining; his ANY/A last year was his lowest since 2001 (excepting his vastly shortened 2008 season) and his INT total and Y/C were career worsts.”
Bad: “OMG Hasselbeck totally sucks, dude is done!”
Thank you, Walter Jones.
Thank you, Ken Griffey Jr.
Average, huh?
Would that be average including busts? The average career yardage for the 1st WR taken is about 580 according to that chart. Would you then argue a WR taken in the top-10 is not a bust if he averages 580 yards over his career?
Reggie Williams produced 460 yards per year for the Jacks, he was the 3rd WR drafted. By JM’s logic in that article, he is not a bust.
The argument is not that well-rounded. I wouldn’t use it as a crux to make Branch out as a non-bust. I wouldn’t call him a bust simply because he produced when he played, but the usage of averages in this argument is really, REALLY weak.
by Thomas Beekers on Aug 31, 2010 12:35 AM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
It's actually a touch over 600 yards and thats per year, with the average first receiver taken averaging 5.7 years starting.
And yes, by the numbers laid out by Brian Burke, not John, Reggie was not a bust. He was a pretty perfect example of Burke’s numbers actually, coming out at pretty much exactly average for where he was taken.
Which shouldn’t be a huge surprise because while Reggie wasn’t what the Jags were hoping for he wasn’t terrible either. People confuse “not as good as I thought he might be” for “BUST” way too much.
I agree. Especially for late-1st round picks, who often go nowhere
But a top-10 pick producing like that is a bust.

Pistol and Mebane alone make that a worthy draft.
Not bad for not having a 1st-rounder.
Is that the light at the end of the tunnel, or the headlights of an oncoming train?
I hated this draft more than any draft ever.
I Felt we needed a Guard or a tight end. We had lost Hutchinson in 2006 and Alexander was falling apart. We ended up getting a wide receiver and a 180lb CB. Wilson has proven to be quality player but I hated the pick at the time and watched # 26 chasing a wide out more than twice into the end zone the next year.
In retrospect Branch, Wilson, Mebane, Wrotto, Herring and Vallos are all still contributors on this team and I saw Atkins make a sack for someone in a preseason game this weekend. So all in all no standout home runs but a bunch of football players who are still playing. The 7th rnd pick Steve Vallos may be our starting left tackle early season.
yea dude
NO!!!
Steve Vallos may be our starting left tackle early season.
You shut your filthy mouth! Okung will be fine and the Hawks are goin’ all the way
19-0!!!!!!!
