2010 Draft Class last night.
So much has been made about the Seahawks fantastic draft class this year and while I don't entirely disagree last night showed us why we may want to slow the hype a bit, a least for this year. And yes I realize that I am overreacting to what I just saw in a pre-season game but that's what we do. If all comments were simply "Well it's only preseason" then discussion wouldn't exactly be tantalizing. It just struck me last night that this highly thought of draft class performed quite poorly. Here's a player-by-player list of what I saw.
Russell Okung: Obviously there isn't a lot to say because he got injured early. We all hope he is ok obviously but ankles can be problematic. I would note that I think his performance last game was a bit overrated and I don't see why people were making a huge deal about it. He did give up some pressure and wasn't eye-popping in the running game. I'm still high on the guy obviously and he's had limited camp, but I'm just saying.
Earl Thomas: Sometimes looked downright bad in coverage and got burned too much for a guy with his speed. No one should be able to get behind Thomas. Tackling wasn't inspiring. That being said he flashed fantastic range and should have come up with a pick on a play where he almost took out Kelly Jennings. I love his potential though and there hasn't been a real ballhawk in Seattle for the last while.
Golden Tate: 1 catch for 8 yards and drew a couple of flags. Almost made an epic diving catch. Did nothing on a punt return. I was extremely surprised to see none of him in the first half. It seems like we should have paid more attention to reports that he has to work on his route-running. He seems awfully raw, I still think he was a good value pick and I'm interested to see how they are going to utilize him next year.
Walter Thurmond III: Corners are hard to evaluate without game-tape but he never did anything that made me cheer or cringe. In general for a corner that's a good sign. I'm just impressed that he's out there given his injuries. This is maybe my favourite pick of the draft because I'm getting really tired of Kelly Jennings and his failure to locate or make a play on the ball ever. I don't see how they don't just give the job to Josh Wilson, but that's a digression....yup.
E.J Wilson: I saw him make one run-stuffing tackle that was quite nice and get a minor injury. Not a lot to say about the man, i hope he can figure out some way to get pressure on the quarterback at some point, even slightly. I have to say I didn't like this pick when it happened because while I understand Wilson's role (A role Kentwan Balmer may be able to fill, for the record) I think you can find guys with higher ceilings in the 4th round.
Kam Chancellor: I love this guy. But it's an irrational love I think because there is nothing yet to suggest he'll be a great player. I'm sure he has special teams value at the moment, which hopefully will keep him on the team. I'm just enticed by the possibilty of him and Thomas as a safety duo some day because they are such polar opposites in body type and style. Nothing he did last night stood out to me, which in a sense is good because I worry about him getting burned in coverage whenever he's in the game.
Anthony McCoy: One catch for 12 yards. Whenever I see McCoy get a catch i'm happy because I hear so much about him having dropping problems. I watched enough Seahawks football in the 2003-2004 period to have no patience for guys who drop balls. He didn't do anything else I noticed but he has potential to be a competant run blocker and a complete tight end. Evaluating run blocking is a bit tough without the game tape though. I honestly hope the Seahawks find a way to keep all 4 tight ends because all 4 of the guys on the roster have something to offer and the position is being emphasized under Bates. I'm sure McCoy and Morrah have enough athleticism to contribute on special teams.
Dexter Davis: The most impressive of the bunch last night. Looks like a more athletic-less bearded Nick Reed. It's good to see we might have someone who can rush the passer, though it remains to be seen if he can do it against starting NFL offensive lineman. Really encouraging showing for a 7th round pick though. 5 tackles and a sack, with some more pressure. Seems relentless and a good scheme fit for the Leo.
Jameson Konz: You may remember we drafted this guy. Freakish athlete, worth a shot. No good. Oh well.
Well that's how I saw it, apologies in advance for my consistent off-topic tangents, such is life.

On McCoy, don't forget
he also oddly fisted a ball into the air allowing for an INT. Maybe it wasn’t the greatest pass, but you’ve got to do more with it than bounce it high in the air…

Okung:
I don’t understand how you could reasonably expect more out of a rookie LT in his first pre-season game. He did a little bit of everything. But it is good to temper our expectations and understand that only 2 (maybe 3) of these guys are likely to be making any meaningful contributions this year. Not a one of them isn’t flashing something special, though, and that’s still cause for excitement.
