Assistance Requested on Charlie Whitehurst

Hello Field Gulls,

I am in a 12-team dynasty league and somewhat short on quarterbacks. After Warner retired, I'm left with only Matt Schaub and Chad Henne. Some of the stronger teams in the league (my brother, for example; you know I need to maintain dominance over him especially) have a stable of quarterbacks such as Matthew Stafford, Tony Romo, Kevin Kolb, and Aaron Rodgers. So, yeah. Schaub and Henne will not cut it.

I have found your fans and bloggers to be some of the most intelligent in the entire SBNation blogosphere, and would greatly appreciate any and all scouting or short- and long-term prospecting/scouting on Charlie Whitehurst.

If this is a site made up of fans who don't particularly care about the fantasy aspect of football, I do apologize for taking up your time with trivial matters.

Thank you, and I appreciate any and all advice you can contribute.

Sincerely, David A. Fuller

A more interesting question with Whitehurst--

How many rounds would a 12-team league have to offer, to make drafting Whitehurst a real possibility? I’m gonna put the over under at 80.

inside of a dog it's too dark to read.

In a dynasty league, who knows

As I understand dynasty anyway. If Whitehurst is the QB of the future for the Seahawks, he could have a lot of value. Even if he is going to be the starter for all of next season he has value in keeper leagues.

To the original poster. I’m not sure you’re going to get much help on this question. Whitehurst is a mystery. Reports are that he looks good in practice, but that doesn’t mean anything. The pre-season will be helpful. But we won’t really know anything until Hasselbeck gets hurt this season and Whitehurst gets his shot.

As I wrote below,

it is a very, very deep league. I had picked up Harvey Unga before replacing him with Mike Williams from TB, though I believe there was a miscue with the rookie draft and he wasn’t actually available.

Gonna take a fortnight at least to get this herd down to St. Louis on Mississippi. This glen's gonna be tough to traverse, and that river's got to be 50, 60 meters wide. And God knows how many fathoms. To hell with parliamentary procedure. We've got to wrangle up some cattles!

Whitehurst in a dynasty league is a possible very very late round flier.

First, barring injury or complete ineffectiveness he is a year away from possibly starting, and likely a year after that from being effective.

Bottom line, it’s a long long shot. I have 45 man rosters in a 10 team dynasty league, most teams have 3-5 QB’s. I’m a Seahawk fan and I’m not planning on drafting him, even on a 3 year plan. We’re only allowed to keep 15 players from year to year and he’s just not valuable compared to so many other guys.

However, here’s the thing… if you want to take a flier on someone— he’s worth it. Say Hasselbeck goes down in week 1 but you’ve spent a last round draft pick on a starter. There are worse dice rolls out there— but not by much.

Also, unless you can start 2 QB’s at a time, having Schaub with an improving Henne isn’t the worst thing in the world. Sure, Rodgers is perhaps a little better, but Romo and Schaub are a coin flip at best, so you’re doing just fine. The rest of your brother’s “stable” of QB’s are unproven at best— Kolb hasn’t done anything yet.

I do agree with your assessment on my quarterbacks

I do love Schaub, and Henne is on my list of players I see exploding this year. You can, however, start two QBs, though I am best served to not do so. My top three RB are Mendenhall/Charles/Rice, and my top six WR are Welker/Austin/Boldin/Ward/Burleson/Mason. Henne doesn’t warrant a starting spot, and probably won’t unless he does explode this year. So I guess you could say I am fine. Problem is, depth is a necessary evil as injuries are all too common in this game.

Your explanation is how I feel about acquiring Whitehurst, though. I do have one spot on my roster, and we don’t have a draft—merely a rookie draft which has already taken place (I got Ben Tate and Montario Hardesty).

I appreciate it!

I couldn't say for sure without seeing all of the available QBs

but I would think there could be someone with both greater initial upside and long-term potential. Someone else mentioned Sam Bradford, and while I don’t think he’s going to dominate this year, he’ll probably have more opportunities to put up fantasy numbers.

Schaub is among the best fantasy QBs and Henne is definitely a workable backup. For depth I probably wouldn’t go with Whitehurst. At least not this year.

Well, that's the thing.

This is a dynasty league with no re-draft. The only draft of sorts is the Rookie Draft, and I’m likely never going to be in position to draft a worthwhile QB unless I somehow screw my team up.

Whitehurst is the back-up (correct?) on a team with an old, one-year-left-on-his-contract starting QB. If the guy shows any type of skill, that sounds like the makings of a guy who could be relevant next season, right?

With my team having a solid starting QB and serviceable backup (though in a league with a flex that allows for QB, having only one stud QB isn’t exactly a positive), I need to find fantasy relevance wherever I can.

I’m not too too worried about short-term impact. If I can be assured the guy will start next season, I’m sold. He’s got a spot for the rest of the year.

If your last paragraph is really how you feel

then I would pull the trigger. I’m not 100% sold on the idea but from what I can gather about the league it’s probably a good option for you.

Truthfully, I thought it to be

as good an option for me as lap-band surgery was for ol’ Rex Ryan.

Appreciate the help. Not to mention the awesomeness of you picking up on my sig. Haha, thank you sir.

Hasselbeck already tweaked his hammie trying to execute a Bates play

Suffice it to say: I’m not convinced he’ll hold up all season (or for even a lot of it).

But then again, I know little about dynasty leagues, so that information could be trivial.

I wouldn't do it; Schaub is no scrub

do you draft next year, as well? Like rookies I mean? I would not take Charlie, take a chance on Tavaris Jackson or Marc Bulger or Sam Bradford or something.

by jacobstevens on Aug 9, 2010 10:53 AM PDT reply actions

When it comes to rolling the dice on the highest upside, long term...

Bulger is too old and over the hill, Bradford has no team around him, and Tavaris is the guy the Vikings are probably already looking to replace. No, if it’s a keeper long term thing, Charlie has as much if not more upside than any of the others. (Of course, if you want points this year, he isn’t a good choice.)

by Tyler Jorgensen on Aug 9, 2010 12:57 PM PDT up reply actions

I think Bradford has better upside from a talent standpoint...

but his team is so bad I just don’t see him reaching it there. Our offense is mediocre, and there aren’t more than 3 guys on their team I’d want on our offense. Meanwhile Charlie has some talent around him, if he can perform himself.

I understand where you’re coming from, but Bradford just has so much to overcome that I’d go the other route.

OK, if you would want to.

Team situation is temportal, talent is innate.

Now that we've had a preseason game featuring Whitehurst

Is there anything new you fine folks can give me in terms of opinion or forecasting?

I did notice that Hasselbeck’s contract is up after this season: what’s the word on the possibility of re-signing him, or, conversely, allowing Whitehurst to take over and letting Matt walk?

Appreciated.
