OTFP: Where The Hell Is Fall? Edition
We really haven't done this with any regularity in a while, so I'm going to take a moment and introduce you to what will (hopefully) be a regular feature here at Field Gulls: the Off-Topic Fanpost. OTFP for short
Normal commenting rules apply here in the OTFP. Keep in mind that this isn't designed to be something akin to Twitter or Facebook. This is a place where you can bring up interesting things to discuss and share, rather than informing us that you're eating a sandwich on your patio in the rain. Here's an example of what's cool and what's not:
Not cool:
Scruffy: I'm eating a sandwich!
Getting better:
Scruffy: I'm eating a sandwich! Who likes sandwiches?
Cool:
Scruffy: I just finished off a tasty turkey and provolone sandwich! Any suggestions on what other sandwiches I should look into next?
Try to keep Seahawks news out of the OTFP and give them a fanpost of their own. Other than that, have at it. Make sure your comments are appropriate and don't violate any of the commenting rules here at FG.
Sometimes I'll post a series of questions in the OTFP that you can answer if you'd like. Here are some questions!
- The Autumn Season: love it or hate it?
- Seasonal beer recommendations? (Always a fun topic)
- Television recommendations?
- Book recommendations?
- Movie recommendations?
Remember though, the OTFP is open to virtually all non-Seahawks discussion provided that they fall within the normal bounds of the FG commenting rules. Have a link you want to share? Go for it. Topic you want to discuss? Have at it.
Enjoy!

1. I love autumn. It’s my favorite season of the year and it can show up any time now. It shouldn’t be this humid on September 28th, dammit.
2. I do not drink, but I have a feeling that’s a rather enjoyable topic for others.
3. These days I’m pretty much just watching Castle, How I Met Your Mother, and Mythbusters. I’d recommend all three, particularly HIMYM.
4. My standard recommendation: “A Man on the Moon” by Andrew Chaikin
5. Well if you haven’t seen Inception yet, go go go.
She'd be a decent Wonder Woman.
We can never have enough super-hero movies or talk about them enough.
Inception.
Amazing.
Go sober and take some vitamins first.
Okay.... I'm in.

The first time it was one movie, the second time it was another.
I had a conversation over beers about whether I liked Inception or Shutter Island more. I think I liked Shutter Island more right of the bat, because it was emotionally charged. Inception I liked, but it took me some chewing and discussion and another viewing before I learned just how much. So Shutter Island got there faster, but Inception went further.
Winter’s Bone is also up there. Awesome movie, I would not have expected the DoP to be a female.
Agreed.
Amazing movie that just gets better and morphs every time you see it. I am also a huge Nolan fanatic so I might be a little biased.

Good call
Saw a doc last week called The Century of Self. Well worth the watch. On my top ten list now, next to Pulp Fiction and my old audio tapes of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
What if Scruffy could trade his turkey sandwich for a MILLION cheeseburgers?!
Oops, that might count as Rosterbation. My bad.

Sandwichs can be eatin at any time
And you can eat Breakfast at any time.
My personal favorite Sandwich is Marble Rye with Turkey lightly toasted with every Veggie you can think think of, and the onions need to be cooked. Sigh, I need a sandwich.

Not a fan of fall
Winter is where it’s at. Lots of Christmas songs I can think of I like as well as SNOW SNOW SNOW!
And this being Seattle I know I end up missing school due to about 1-2 inches of snow.

Winter is defintitely the best season.

I love Fall
Halloween, Football, cooler air for hiking, great sunsets, kids are in school and out of my way, tourists don’t visit my city as much.
Segway's are Dangerous, ride at your own risk my friends
Fall is Awesome because of Football and the chill in the Air, although it sucks to ride a road bike in and I am not into cyclocross.
I had the OKT Widmer the other night during the Miami and Jets game.. I was disapointed that Miami lost for some reason, I have no attachment to either team.
I also had some Drop Top also while layin some sod.
TV I like Brian L Selections above
But I also really like Bones, Leverage(out of season), Glades(A&E has a good show, shocking), Weeds (Showtime) , I also watch extreme home makeover because the houses they build are awesome and inspiring although I hate ty pennington.
Books, I cant read something for more than 10 min without falling asleep.
I havnt been to a movie in while but I want to go see dinner for Shmucks and the Other Guys. I saw Inception and it wasnt my cup of tea, for some reason.

I can't believe it took me this long to get around to Dexter.
But I’m loving it. I’m in the middle of Season 3 on Netflix (which means I have to avoid spoilers like a mofo when I’m online).
As far as other shows – Breaking Bad is definitely up there. I used to think Sons of Anarchy was cheesy, until a friend told me to think of it as a live action pulp comic book, and know I thoroughly enjoy it. Eastbound & Down is awesome. I like Sunny in Philly, but can only take it in small doses (more than 2 eps in a row give me a headache – it just feels like the show is always yelling at you). Community is worth the hype, and I still have a soft-spot for 30 Rock. I’ve never been able to get into HIMYM – the lead character is too whiny, and I’m suffering from Jason Segel overload. Also hate to say it, but Mad Men is falling off my radar – enjoyed the first season and a half when there was still some mystery to Draper/Whitman, but lately it’s felt just like any other generic prime-time soap, but with cooler sets/costumes and more smoking.

I keep meaning to watch Mad Men.
I hated it before ever seeing it because all I heard about was how great it is. Makes me not want to watch something when everyone in the media is all over it’s nuts.

Dexter is good, but's it's not IASIP good
That stands for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Now you’re cool.
I've been underwhelmed by this season so far.
They’ve earned themselves plenty of leeway though; there’s a “No eating during ‘Sunny’” rule in our house due to the likelihood of laugh-choking.

oh no, another Season 6 hater!
Just kidding. I didn’t blow my load over it either, but I really enjoyed the last few episodes. Was better the second time.
Am debating picking up the full series on BR, it’s on sale right now.
I just couldn't believe that since the first season they were saying that the Island wasn't purgatory.
And while it wasn’t, WHEN THEY GOT OFF THE ISLAND THEY WERE IN PURGATORY. Seriously, fuck that shit. They didn’t technically lie to the fans, but it was still a silly loophole that they created.
by Phil Hatzenbuehler on Sep 29, 2010 10:28 AM PDT up reply actions
Uh, that's not what happened. (AND UM, LE SPOILERS WITHIN)
They got off the island in season 3, that was for real. Both the island and the “real world” were, uh, real.
All the stuff about “purgatory” (not a word they used, by the way) happened after the detonation of the bomb at the end of season 5, and the “real” world was still going on at the same time. At least, as far as I can tell. I could be way, way wrong.
Holy shit, I didn't make that connection when I watched it as it aired.
When the bomb went off they all died. That makes total sense why the island was lying in ruins at the bottom of the ocean in the season six premier. Again, holy shit.
That makes it slightly better, but there was just so much wanking that happened during the last season (the whole part with the temple, the lighthouse, the drinking of the water/wine, the whole Man in Black/Jacob backstory). Maybe I just need to watch the sixth season again.
by Phil Hatzenbuehler on Sep 29, 2010 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions
That was my reading as well.
Which totally annoyed me, since the finale was all about explaining the post-season 5 stuff, and very little to do with other things on the island – basically all the stuff that came before it.
Currently re-watching it from the beginning
And I’m amazed at how much they set up in advance, especially in Season 2 and 3.
Im Lost... What happens again?

I would like autumn a hellva lot more if it wasn't for the damn windstorms we always get in Washington.
Is that the light at the end of the tunnel, or the headlights of an oncoming train?
Are you in eastern Washington?
I grew up in Western Washington, and thought high wind was 20 MPH. Now that I’m in the Air Force, and every flightline routinely has 20 MPH winds, and reaches 30 and 40 with regularity, I miss home and want to retire somewhere where there is no wind at all.
I'm in Bellingham.
Every November we routinely get slammed with rainstorms accompanied by 20-30 MPH winds and gusts up to 50. Not a pleasant walk to the bus stop at all.

- Get lightheaded as hell sitting across the line of windows instead of facing the same side as the driver.
- Guy to my left smells awful.
- I kid you not, the two girls to my right were talking about vomit for about 3 minutes.
Thank god we had few stops because that was the longest 20 minutes ever.

Dottie's Seattle Lager
by Emerald City Brewery. Had some on tap at the Triangle before the 49ers game – good stuff.
Actually, I’d buy it no matter what – since they took over the Old Rainier Brewery – it’s a local pride thing. That building needs to stay an active brewery, it’s just the way things should be.

I’m sure many of you love Belmont Station, myself included, but I encourage you to try The Beer Mongers on Division and 12th. Selection is not as vast, but those dudes know their business, and they really educated me on Meads, Sours, and the Old World Pils verse the New World Pils.
I found two things out pertaining to Mead. 1: never drink Viking Blod when you want to enjoy…well, anything but being drunk. I tried drinking it before the Hawks game and had to stop, ’cause it was like doing shots.
2. They are buying a bunch of mead from a Montana winery called Hidden Legend that flagships meads. The guy there (Josh) let me sample some of their Wild Elderberry Mead, and it was spectacular. It smelled oddly like my father though…
I've been meaning to stop at The Beer Mongers.

Let's talk music!
Anyone have any good recommendations? What have you been loving lately?
I’ve been listening to a lot of Miles Davis and Bobby Hutcherson (killer jazz vibraphonist) as well as the Dodos and the new Thermals album. The new Thermals, if anyone is a fan, doesn’t really touch their back catalog but it still has some really bright spots and is worth repeated listens.

Dave Brubeck if you're into the West Coast thing.
Been listening to a lot of Toto recently as well.
Yes, I need to listen to more Brubeck.
For a while I considered myself a more East Coast big band fan, but I’ve been very into the West lately. Still, Buddy Rich is my all-time favorite.

Great band.
They were denied entry into the States for years due to concerns their concerts were too rowdy. Kinda funny, when you punch up clips on youtube they aren’t exactly headbangers.

I remember when I was playing Jazz Piano in middle and high school.
And with two pianists, one always played Vibes. It was kind of a fun instrument to solo on. I’ve never really listened to one with regularity though. Guessing it would be fun to listen to.
Bobby Hutcherson is absolutely fantastic.
As are Lionel Hampton (way old school) and Terry Gibbs. Search em on You Tube and be amazed!

Who doesn’t like Fall? Fall means football, October baseball, and my birthday! Best season of the year.
Just put the finishing touches on a 12-rack of Red Hook’s Late Harvest. Damn good stuff.
Always Sunny and Tosh.0 get my viewership every week, and I’ve been giving Terriers a chance too, although its quickly losing my interest. What isn’t losing my interest, however, is AMC’s Rubicon. I’m a huge fan of Breaking Bad and Mad Men, so I had high hopes for this show, and its mostly delivered thus far. A little slow, plodding even, but its very well-written and the performances are top notch. Cant wait for The Walking Dead, and as for the aforementioned Game of Thrones adaptation…on the one hand, I’m a huge fan of the series and am way stoked to see it brought life on screen. On the other, the scale and scope of this series is pretty massive, and I have doubts whether HBO will be able to do it justice, or see it through to the end.
Well, anyone who hasn’t experienced George R.R. Martin’s brilliant series is really missing out. Fantasy skeptics, take note – these books are light on the fantasy and heavy on the blood, sex, and political intrigue. A truly impressive work, the only risk involved in picking this series up is catching up to fast and having to wait for Martin to get off his ass and finish the damn thing!
I haven’t been to the theater in ages, but I would like to see the Facebook movie. Fincher is great and I’m hoping for a thoughtful commentary on the internet generation. If this happens I may also sneak into Easy A just to spend 90 minutes fapping to Emma Stone.
You might want to wait until "Easy A" comes to DVD.

Any ideas for a survival pick this week?
I already used up the Packers in Week 2 for my office pool, something I’m already regretting since they’re the obvious pick this week. Right now I’m leaning towards the Falcons (with SF in implosion mode) or the Chargers. The Saints have too much future value for me to burn them this early.
Is that the light at the end of the tunnel, or the headlights of an oncoming train?
Seahawks! Or Jets over Buffalo, or Indy over Jax
Indy’s probably another one with too much future value though.
Thank you, Walter Jones.
Thank you, Ken Griffey Jr.
Yeah, Indy hosts the Jags in Week 15, I'm saving them until then.
I decided to hold my nose and pick the Chargers. 8-point favorites, 78% chance to win, little future value.
Is that the light at the end of the tunnel, or the headlights of an oncoming train?
You're saving a survival pick for week 15??
I’m saving my bottle of Opus 1 for my 150th birthday.
inside of a dog it's too dark to read.
Ah, but my office pool isn't "single elimination"
It’s based on final 17-week record. I’m 3-0 so far, so I can afford to take a risk for one week. This is why “future value” is a big deal in my situation. Just about everyone but me is picking the Saints this week, so I’m holding them in my pocket when nobody else can use them.
So I guess it’s less “survival pool” and more “pick ’em pool.”
Is that the light at the end of the tunnel, or the headlights of an oncoming train?
So I love Mad Men, and I love Dexter
But Community makes me laugh harder than I have in awhile…every damn episode.
