I can't say I know much about Barbre

Though I recall him getting benched last year.

You’re liking both O-line signing then, John?

by Thomas Beekers on Sep 28, 2010 3:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Giacomini excites me a little

Barbre is a potential starter. What I like about both is their raw potential, especially Barbre. Both were part of a talented fourth round class from 2007 that produced Jermon Bushrod and Doug Free.

by John Morgan on Sep 28, 2010 3:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Did Gibson deserve to be cut?

I thought he was handling LG pretty well, but it’s hard to judge individual o-linemen while watching the games live.

by J.L. White on Sep 28, 2010 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I think he'd been struggling with some back issues.

I can’t speak to his overall efficacy. But they also probably need to clear a spot for Okung to play (on the line, that is, not the roster) pretty soon as well.

This makes me happy.

Barbre is a dude that was really fast for a lineman coming out.

Fast enough to play as a gunner on the punt team for his college. A small-school guy that dominated as a LT, and had a pretty good combine as well. He has very high potential, and struggled for the Packers.

by cashless on Sep 29, 2010 8:36 AM PDT up reply actions

Doubt it

wonder if the Schneider is gaming the compensatory pick process.

by John Morgan on Sep 28, 2010 3:08 PM PDT up reply actions

I think he might

He has only 6 games under his belt but the rule is he can’t have been active for 9 games in an accrued season. He probably hit that total in our injury-plagued year?

by Thomas Beekers on Sep 28, 2010 3:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Gibson is practice squad eligible for another team

but having served two seasons on Seattle’s practice squad, I don’t think he’s eligible to return to the Seahawks practice squad. The third year exemption is only for free agents.

Someone can double check that if they want. The CBA can be found here, and PS eligibility is detailed on page 170 (187).

by John Morgan on Sep 28, 2010 3:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Looks like it.

Though the legal mumbo-jumbo is confusing.

by Coach Owens on Sep 28, 2010 3:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Wait he can't have served two seasons

Since we signed him off another team’s PS.

So, eligible?

by Thomas Beekers on Sep 28, 2010 4:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Think you're right.

One year on IR, six games played, one year on the Seahawks practice squad—he should be eligible.

by John Morgan on Sep 28, 2010 5:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Compensatory picks are awarded based on free agent signings and free agents from x team that signed with other teams

The actual rules are kept secret, but it’s based on starts and post-season honors, and maybe Hamilton not starting week one has an impact. I don’t know, but some of the Seahawks moves have lacked a clear explanation.

by John Morgan on Sep 28, 2010 3:17 PM PDT up reply actions

I bet it has something to do with chicken entrails and goat's blood

The ancient Mayans knew the secret of the Seahawks personnel moves, but unfortunately they died out a thousand years before they could tell the rest of us.

by J.L. White on Sep 28, 2010 3:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Wouldn't that be something.

We’ll just round up a few rounds of compensatory picks and trade em in for another 1st rounder or 2! Like that time my friend and I paid for $8 worth of gas with change out of the penny jar!

Except you can’t trade a comp pick. Even without compensatories, the volume of transactions has its own benefits.

by jacobstevens on Sep 28, 2010 3:15 PM PDT up reply actions

With the emergence of Polumbus and Andrews (did I really just write that sentence?)

Wrotto and Gibson were pretty expendable, it seems like. Better to trade up for some higher ceiling guys.

by Kingdomer on Sep 28, 2010 3:09 PM PDT reply actions

DAMMIT SCHNEIDER, CAN I PLEASE GET COMFORTABLE WITH THE ROSTER BEFORE YOU MAKE MORE CHANGES?!?!

Well, if Giacomi and Barbre are upgrades to who we had before, then I guess it’s worth it. And it’s not like Gibson and Wrotto are really important to the team. But still….

Makes me happier and happier that my only jersey is a Zorn.

Courtesy of my sister. I can’t afford a jersey yet. Maybe when I grow up. Do I get to be grown up when I hit 30?

I liked Ganther.

But the other moves seem positive. It’s really interesting watching the Wheel of Fortune spins by Schneider and company. I just don’t want to hit the BANKRUPT section.

by Chirp on Sep 28, 2010 3:23 PM PDT reply actions

I can see that.

And we don’t seem to be using a fullback, so we don’t need one of those, either, I suppose. If it is Robinson versus Ganther, I’ll have to go Robinson > Ganther, too.

by Chirp on Sep 28, 2010 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions

I should also mention that I like Stokley.

The slot-machine is a good slot receiver if he’s healthy. Maybe they brought him in to help show our younger guys the tricks of the trade?

by Chirp on Sep 28, 2010 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Packer Fan Here

Wow, 2 more ex-Packers signed elsewhere. I suppose I can give you some input on these guys.

Giacomini- He’s the prototypical linemen. Great size and athletic ability. He’s still a bit raw and had trouble staying healthy the past couple years. He was our project player until a couple other linemen outshined him.

Barbre- DO NOT START HIM AT OT…..EVER!!!!!!! He was rated as the WORST OT in the NFL last year and is the biggest reason why the Packers allowed 37 sacks in the first 8 weeks last year. He is literally a revolving door at the OT position. At OG, it’s a different story. I think with his tremendous strength he’s better suited to play OG and I actually liked his performance at this position.

Thanks

For the Heads up, appreciate it.

I support us using L. WASH in the Wild Hawk with Forsett and a little Tate.

by BleedGreenandBlue on Sep 28, 2010 3:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Hey Jabooty! Always good to see you drop by

Between you and John it sounds like both need a bit of polishing. Barbre and Stacy would make an interesting monster OG couple, but we’ll have to see.

Had to smile a bit at “rated worst OT”. The FBO guys were talking all off-season about how Polumbus was the worst OT in the business by their metric, and now look at him. Exceptions don’t prove the rule obv, just had to think of it.

by Thomas Beekers on Sep 28, 2010 3:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Most penalized

I seem to recall from some of Sando’s charts. I guess that could make a good case for worst tackle.

by noweat on Sep 28, 2010 3:36 PM PDT up reply actions

It's the only official number you can track, yeah

The rest are team numbers (like Big Walt’s insane stats) or done by statistics sites like FBO.

by Thomas Beekers on Sep 28, 2010 3:42 PM PDT up reply actions

I dont remember which group rated him as the worst OT

But I certainly do remember it was him. At least in terms of giving up sacks. Barbre simply gave up more sacks than any other OT in the NFL. His problem at OT is he doesn’t get his hands on the rusher. He looks like he just tries to push the other guy, and when you face polished pass rushers, Barbre literally becomes a revolving door. Thus being the reason Packer fans now call him: Allen “The Revolving Door” Barbre. He made Adewale Ogunleye and Rey Edwards look like animals out there. He got 1 chance this Preseason at LT, and the rusher drilled Rodgers from the blindside almost untouched. Scary. So again, don’t attempt to give this guy another chance at OT. He’s THAT BAD! I thought his performance this Preseason at OG was solid, but the fact that fans and the team were still having nightmares of him last season along with equal competition or better on the roster led to his release.

Holy smokes.

This amount of turnover is crazy. These moves seem positive though. I wonder if this keeps all the players on the roster on notice as well. Perform or pack?

For better or worse I am so much more into the details of our roster this season than previous years.

by The-Wes on Sep 28, 2010 3:37 PM PDT reply actions

That's because the details are in the headlines so much this year.

Man I hope the majority of these moves pan out. Clemons, BMFMW, Washington, Robinson, and virtually ALL of our rookies look like wins. Yeah, I am bummed that some of the familiar faces are gone, but I’d have to say that as much as I may have been attached to the names, and the guys, the players won’t be missed as long as their replacements continue to come on SO big.

Hoping…

So including Evan Dietrich-Smith

This makes three castoffs from the Packers o-line on the active roster.

I guess the grass really is greener in Wisconsin?

Wow

I didn’t realized EDS also went to Seattle. That’s interesting. I thought he was ok in Green Bay as a backup, although he was struggling a bit more this Preseason compared to last Preseason. Not too much I can say about him. He’s not starting material though.

I am pretty amazed..

at how well our line has played this year, especially considering Okung and Unger have been out. We have a really good chance of going into the offseason with a solid and deep OL. Guys like Brock, Siavii, Clemons, Balmer have bolstered our DL too. Bryant is a different player in the new scheme.

Pending whatever happens with CW this year, we probably need a first round QB this offseason, but we have surprisingly few holes after that. Clemons and Curry have surpassed expectations, alleviating the dire need for a passrusher. I wouldn’t cry if we drafted Quinn, but we could probably get away with upside/depth pickups later on to compete with Davis and Wilson. Otherwise, the freedom to take best talent is huge.

I just like how this FO gets that the games are won and lost on the margins. A roster spot is a critical asset.

by michaelfox99 on Sep 29, 2010 5:42 AM PDT reply actions

I'd say we need

a first round QB, but we also could use a solid pass rusher. Even with Clemons, it would be nice to get someone else to spell him for a bit at DE, or a good DT to pair with Mebane.

by splintrdmind on Sep 29, 2010 9:16 AM PDT up reply actions

Agreed on the first round QB.

Especially if the other offensive pieces fall into place. The targets at WR and TE are definitely there, and Forsett looks to be a quality all around back. If the offensive line sorts itself out – and considering the success the FO is having with Expendable cast members in this regard it certainly could – it might be a good situation in which to insert a rookie QB.

If there ever is one, that is! Worst case scenario it’s a year of Charlie, and we don’t even really know what he’s capable of yet. I just wish we could find out sooner rather than later.

by djafrot on Sep 29, 2010 10:29 AM PDT up reply actions

We definitely need another pass rusher.

When Curry left the game with his hammy – I witnessed Will Herring blitz packages.

This was… a really sad thing to see.

I like Will Herring but he is terrible on the blitz.

Very impressed with what Schneider/Caroll has done with this OL

I can’t believe how few OL moves we made last year, even though it was obvious Jones was done. All I kept hearing was “there are no starting caliber OL’s available.” Now we’ve picked up a couple off the scrap heap or low ball trades and they are starting and keeping Matt pretty clean.

by Surf Hawk on Sep 29, 2010 4:33 PM PDT reply actions

Completely agreed

Our O-line pass protection has been fantastic, all things considered. Now, we just need a running game :)
