Hawks expected to sign RB Chris Henry to PS -- Per Danny O'Neil, via Adam Caplan. There you go Vasili.

Mike Williams is assigned jersey number 17 -- per Mike WIlliams. I wish he could've kept 1, but at least 17 is still low.

Sando says that 1.) Gibbs taught his ZBS to our new OL Coach Ruel when he was consulting USC. 2.) We are expected to keep the same scheme. We're just going to populate it with players who don't fit though. It's called West Coast Zone Blocking.

Hawks sign Raheem Brock -- Per Brian McIntrye. H/T to Nate. He's 32...jussayin'. He seems too big for a LEO, but they could think to rush him from the interior on passing downs.

so j jones is still on the roster

until further notice.
any other active roster RB possibilities?

is there any possibility they don’t cut jones as reported?
just go with forsett, washington, ganther?

by roddychops on Sep 6, 2010 12:01 PM PDT reply actions

assumed that

was a special teams addition only. not brought in as an offensive addition.

Anyone know what style of player he is?

How’re his vision, acceleration, top speed etc?

Bad, Bad

and ok.

He’s a special teams stud—don’t look for him to do much for you on offense, though he can play some FB if needed.

Backup leo

Brock is a short term backup solution behind clemons at the Leo along with Dexter Davis…hawks will draft a Leo type pass rusher in 2011 in top rounds I would imagine

Brock

Got it…seems to small to play tackle…I guess some sort of hybrid dl

by Davis Hsu on Sep 6, 2010 12:45 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

No, he doesn't.

But maybe he can play some nickel.

Chris Henry...

Is he one of those guys with monster off field baggage?

by broadbill birdwatcher on Sep 6, 2010 12:24 PM PDT reply actions

Not the Bengal

I believe you are mistaken for the Cin. Bengal Chris Henry. He died in a tragic car accident last december in which he was ejected from the back of a pick up truck. He was a WR.

by manlyhanley on Sep 6, 2010 12:29 PM PDT up reply actions

confirmed from o'neill:
The Seahawks announced fullback Owen Schmitt, safety Jordan Babineaux and defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson have been released.

In their place, Seattle added Michael Robinson, Junior Siavii and defensive end Raheem Brock.

so julius jones survives for a few more hours at least.

by roddychops on Sep 6, 2010 12:26 PM PDT reply actions

I like most of the new pickups

I’m only really annoyed about Vickerson (wonder if the injuries were that bad) Wrotto and Adams.

Was Vickerson under that thing where if he were to play week 1 his contract becomes guaranteed?

by Scruffy Lefty on Sep 6, 2010 12:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Not sure, I thought those guarantees usually activated if they made the final roster.

I’m not worried about Wrotto or Adams but I’m pretty upset about Vickerson. If nothing else he looked like he might beat out Cole for the starting spot.

Great post by Rob

Reading the descriptions of who we got, makes it make more sense. Not necessarily why did we get rid of who we did, but look who we got. Most of them are guys that fit the mold, have potential or are cheap hungry talent.

by stufr on Sep 6, 2010 12:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I would also argue with the notion that Andrews is "a sure talent that can come out and contribute immediately"

He basically flunked out the last two seasons. He allowed 9.5 sacks in 2008 and then was shifted to guard and benched in 2009.

by John Morgan on Sep 6, 2010 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep, Max Jean-Gilles replaced him at guard because Andrews was a hazard at guard.

And the knee injury with the Bengals probably ruined him.

This is just BULLSHIT!

I am on vacation, and have only my little netbook with me and every time I get a chance to check in all kinds of hell has broken loose! Babs is cut! Babs cut not confirmed, but other stuff is. Babs is cut! Emotional whiplash! Babs will stand forever as one of my favorite Seahawks of all time just because of that stop on Romo! Bye Bye Big Play Babs – Bon Chance!

by Tigloki on Sep 6, 2010 12:37 PM PDT reply actions

Babs was horrible in coverage

Check the Minnesota drive that ended in goal line stand I think babs got beat three times in a row on third and long! I will always remember that romo tackle tho!

by Davis Hsu on Sep 6, 2010 12:44 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

I've got good news for you.

Babs is back; Craig Terrill is gone!

Thank you, Walter Jones.
Thank you, Ken Griffey Jr.

by thebyron on Sep 7, 2010 8:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Another tidbit I picked up from King
Matt Hasselbeck loves to go to his right. The Seahawks threw more than half their passes to the right side of the field for the fourth straight season, and had the highest rate in the league for the third time in those four years.

I was already musing about the opportunity cost of having a TE covering LT. Right-handed quarterbacks have a better view of the right side of the field, so a chip-and-go TE is a more valuable receiver if he’s covering the right tackle. Presumably, that’s why the standard pro-set diagram shows him on the right.

Ergo, hope: When Okung returns, if he plays well, that should translate to much bigger numbers for Carlson.

by Jason_D on Sep 6, 2010 1:34 PM PDT up reply actions

The key on Jones, as I understand it...

is that if he remains on the roster at the end of this day, the Hawks are on the hook for his entire $2.4 million salary for 2010.

So if something’s gonna happen with him, it will probably happen soon…

by Hawkdawg on Sep 6, 2010 12:45 PM PDT reply actions

I've asked this kind of question before.

But it’s getting to the point where you’ve got a bunch of guys who haven’t played as a whole unit together. Different guys rotating on the D-line and at the nickel, different guys all over the O-line, new faces at running back.

This feels to me like a conglomerate of individuals rather than a cohesive group. I think we have only twelve players remaining from 2008. Crazies:
Hasselbeck
Tats
Hill
Herring
MeBane
Jennings
Terrill
Mare
Carlson
Spencer
Branch
Obo
(I don’t count JJ)

Julius Jones takes a pay cut and keeps his roster spot

According to Schefter.

Seahawks RB Julius Jones saved his job by taking a paycut. The plan, which multiple people confirmed, was to cut him. Paycut saved job.

Ah I was right!

I like JJ on the roster. Again I have no idea why.

by BigWalt on Sep 6, 2010 1:46 PM PDT up reply actions

I like having a well rounded veteran presence.

He’s smart and does everything well enough (block, catch, know ZBS).

I think he was the victim of a poor O-line and now age is catching up with him. He’ll be a good situational back and probably good for Force.

by BigWalt on Sep 6, 2010 1:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Don't we already have TWO of those?

I thought Forsett and Ganther would be prime candidates for that sort of thing.

Off-topic but there's no other place to put this and as Hawks fans I think this could be interesting:

Anyone else thrilled to see Atlanta stomp the Dixon-led Steelers this coming weekend? I know I am. I get a kick out of evaluating our upcoming opponents (and possible SB contenders) anyway. Not being in any fantasy leagues this year, I have to resort to other means as far as getting interested in non-Seattle games.

I am baffled as to how Peter King thinks the Steelers will win the Super Bowl

But then again he picked the Bears last year.

I like Tomlin a lot but damn was that Super Bowl win timely because he’s got a lot of crap to deal with.

Peter King has no idea what he's doing

he’s been in the business for so long that he’s forgotten how to actually watch film and just relies on his contacts to make his predictions.

by smileyman on Sep 7, 2010 10:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Okay, so...

Am I correct that we have made a switch of merely 6 players so far (six in, six out?) Here’s my count (not counting practice squad):

Released S Jordan Babineaux, FB Owen Schmitt, DT Kevin Vickerson, S Kevin Ellison, C Steve Vallos and T Mansfield Wrotto.

Signed DE Raheem Brock, RB Michael Robinson, DB Nate Ness, T Stacy Andrews, G Evan Dietrich-Smith and DT Junior Siavii.

The number of roster moves seems to be disproportionate to the number of gnn’s, freak outs, celebrations and hair pulling. Did I miscount? I’m starting to think I was swept into some sort of LSD roller-coaster created by a toxin emitted by Nick Reed’s annoyance as he was cut. Long live Nick Reed.

by Chirp on Sep 6, 2010 3:35 PM PDT reply actions

I guess I should mention

that I am only talking about moves AFTER the 53 man roster countdown.

by Chirp on Sep 6, 2010 3:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, a big deal. I agree with that.

Worthy of a freak out, regardless of why he quit/retired.

I was talking about roster moves. I forgot that a large number of comments were devoted to this particular personnel change as well. Thanks for the reminder that we now have two people in our organization named Golden.

by Chirp on Sep 6, 2010 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I actually like Brock as sort of a DT pass rusher on passing down.

He’s not young, but if this team is competitive I think he’ll help.
