#3 Boise State vs. #10 Virginia Tech Open Thread

This game is being broadcast on ESPN from FedEx Field in Maryland. After years of flying under the radar college football is finally giving Boise State respect by putting them in prime position to go to the National Championship Game. A win against the Hokies followed by Oregon State in a few weeks time would set them up to be in the top 2 before their ridiculously easy WAC play.

I don't really know much as far as whom I'd scout on either of these squads but Virginia Tech has a great RB in Ryan Williams (sophomore) and according to their roster they have a tight end named George George. Tyrod Taylor is in his final year at QB and isn't very good but he's always good for at least 1-2 stupid plays per game.

Tonight is the biggest game of the early college football season and it couldn't come soon enough after a wave of absolutely terrible contests on Saturday and an exciting 51-49 game between Tulsa and East Carolina on Sunday no one other than me probably watched.

Tragic.

If you’re still looking go for Veetle.com.

Assuming you’re not familiar – you have to install their player, but it’s reputable and performs well. I’m sure one of the sports channels is playing the game.

I thought Saturday had some good games.

UW vs. BYU was good, even though it was a frustrating loss for the Huskies.

Oregon State vs. TCU was an excellent game to watch.

Pittsburgh vs. Utah (Thursday) was also an excellent game.

Jacksonville State upsetting Ole Miss was awesome.

LSU vs. UNC went down to the last play after a great 4th quarter.

There were a number of good games this last week. Much more than you would expect with a lot of ranked teams playing Division II schools. But tonight is definitely cream of the crop.

The non-Saturday games for the most part were enjoyable

But the televised stuff was brutal, even LSU/UNC which was sloppy as hell.

The Seahawks picked up Raheem Brock.

by bdeviled11 on Sep 6, 2010 5:28 PM PDT reply actions

He does now.

Copy directly from PFT’s comment section:

I’m a Colts fan, can shed a little light into the Raheem Brock situation. After the SuperBowl, Brock asked Polian for his release, as he wouldn’t ever be a starter with Freeney and Mathis in the lineup. Although he played a lot of snaps, in the joker role (lining up sometimes as DE, some DT, and even standing up a yard behind the down lineman), he was never going to get starter’s money.

He signed really late into training camp with Tennessee, two preseason games is not a lot of time to learn a new defensive system and impress the coaches. Brock’s solid and dependable, but not really a playmaker and never did anything that blew us away. Hence his approved release and the selection of Jerry Hughes with our first round pick. Still hoping he finds a new home with Seattle though.

I'm no kicker but

It seems like comparing left hash v. right hash accuracy would suffer from some sample size issues

Oh good, another box to put personal information in...

by gee dub on Sep 6, 2010 6:12 PM PDT reply actions

Not saying

that kicking from the hash doesn’t make a difference – or even that kicking from the opposite hash doesn’t make a difference for this kicker. Just that when you make 14/14 from everywhere but the left hash and 4/11 from the left hash the obvious conclusion that you can’t kick from the left hash may be incorrect because the sample size would lead to a lot of noise. Without doing the math (lazy) I suspect that the split is more responsibly attributable to luck from the right and center and bad luck from the left.

Oh good, another box to put personal information in...
