Danny O'Neil reports that the Seahawks will start Forsett at RB, Gibson at LG, and either Polumbus or Pitts at LT. Holy shit.

According to Carroll, just because Forsett is starting doesn't mean he'll get the most carries.

From BMFMW - "Just finished practice.. SF game week is officially under way! 12th man, bring an extra pair of gloves. Gonna be a slugfest!!"

Sando has a list of notes from the VMAC. My favorite one is "Carroll said the massive roster changes of the last few days were part of the plan all along."

This just in, Golden has decided to buy an umbrella. What a pusscake.

Yikes.

Doesn’t say much for Okung’s week 1 chances if they’ve already penciled in Polumbus or Pitts at LT.

I’ve heard differing reports about the players but I knew Golden Ruehl has been taught the ZBS by Gibbs or at least shown how it works.

Who was our backup LT?

Wrotto, because he played 2 preseason games as a fill-in? He was a major liability. I’d rather cut him and say, “he did not meet our standard for a backup left tackle,” than say “we’re going with what we’ve got, even if it sucks and we have to gameplan around it.”

Where on the line do the 49ers generate most of their sacks from?

Justin Smith is a capable sack guy considering he plays in a 3-4 defense (6 sacks last year), but he hasn’t had a sack against the Seahawks in his two seasons with the 49ers.

They love to blitz Patrick Willis, and while I do remember him getting some good pressures in, but he’s another guy who has never registered a sack against the Seahawks.

My hope is that the 49ers rely on blitz packages that put more stress on our RB’s than they do on our green tackles.

My guess is that Lawson will give us the most problems. Who will he be matched up with the most?

Pass rush from the 49ers

will likely come from the OLBs on the left side of the offense. Brooks, LaBoy and to some extent Briggs.

Lawson might bring some heat this year but he’s too tall to get good leverage on a lineman (something like 6’5 or 6’6).

Logic merely enables one to be wrong with authority

It will be great some day to have a line that can give the QB 3 seconds, as well as a vertical passing game. Won’t happen soon, but maybe next year. I am just praying for no serious injuries this coming game…

by rrenner07 on Sep 6, 2010 7:13 PM PDT reply actions

Seahawks are trying to trade Locklear

My guess is he might even make it to the Niner game. After that Leroy Hill is added back onto the 53-man roster, and he might just take Lock’s spot.

My guess Locklear has more than a week to get traded before the Seahawks cut him outright….unless he plays well this Sunday. With Okung already ruled out for the first game, PC might not want to be too thin at OT.

by J.L. White on Sep 6, 2010 10:45 PM PDT up reply actions

What annoys me

Is how this FO seems to be telegraphing moves. I understand it’s difficult to actively trade a player for a decent return, but everyone in the league knew we were going to cut Housh, and now everyone knows we’re likely to cut Locklear. I’d be very suprised if we got anything for him.

by Mickapeckalin on Sep 7, 2010 12:08 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't think the Seahawks actually announced Locklear was on his way out

I believe whenever a team tries hard to trade someone that that info gets leaked….it would be nice if this stuff doesn’t get out. Q/PM may just do a real lousy job of keeping such things clandestine.

by J.L. White on Sep 7, 2010 12:12 AM PDT up reply actions

Perhaps?

This Sunday’s game is an audition for Locklear to keep his job. With the additions of Andrews and Polumbus, and the return of Okung (hopefully week 2), combined with Locklear’s recent poor play, and all of the cuts, I have to believe he is skating thin ice.

Yes.

Midway through the season, or after the season is over, or in one calender year. It’s going to take some time for it to make sense.

My best guess is that if someone is not in the long term plans, they are being moved to get a draft pick, cut to make room for people who are in the long term plans, or sticking around to keep a competitive team on the field and “mentor” the young players. Hasselbeck, Milloy, and Hamilton seem to fall in group three. TJ and Grant group two, some young players that seemed like they could be good in the future in group one.

That’s a really rough, imperfect, and possibly mistaken view, I can’t think of a better one yet. Hoping time helps it make more sense.

Off Topic: Does anyone know

How many 4th round picks we got? If Burly performs well and if Wilson starts that’s 2. I also heard we are getting a 4th comp from Morey retiring. Not sure if this is correct, I would like someone to explain a little more. The way I see it we will have 4 4th rounders…..I think.

by PhoneHomeET29 on Sep 6, 2010 10:11 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

We didn't lose Wilson, we traded him.

Had we KEPT him this year, then lost him in FA, that might have been another story. I think. Though maybe he was a restricted FA, not sure.

by djafrot on Sep 6, 2010 10:37 PM PDT up reply actions

For Wilson

We traded him for a fifth and if he starts it could become a 4th. I’m hoping it turns into a 4th.

by PhoneHomeET29 on Sep 6, 2010 10:44 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Compensatory picks are determined by comparing all the players we signed to all the players who left via free agency

We don’t get specific draft picks for specific players….in any case I don’t think we’re going to get 2 comp picks (outside the 7th round, that is).

Right now we have one 4th rounder, and we might get two depending on what Baltimore does with Josh Wilson….comp picks won’t be decided until well after the season is over.

by J.L. White on Sep 6, 2010 10:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, one we used during the draft.

Pretty sure we used our own 4th to move down a few spots in the Titans trade, and then picked Thurmond, while we used the Eagles pick to draft EJ Wilson.

by cashless on Sep 7, 2010 3:35 AM PDT up reply actions

Tapp was traded; he wasn't a free agent

The Eagles sent us their 4th rounder (with Clemons); compensatory picks have nothing to do with trades.

by J.L. White on Sep 7, 2010 11:17 AM PDT up reply actions

Morey's retiring doesn't give us anything, it just means his contract/playing time won't be subtracted from Burley's

Burley is a FA lost, Morey was a FA signed.

But it’s pretty hard to predict comp picks. Burley has a decent contract so that might put us in range for a 4th, but we really won’t know until the next off-season.

by Thomas Beekers on Sep 6, 2010 10:55 PM PDT up reply actions

4th round 2011

If Josh Wilson plays alot we get a low fourth rounder…I believe we get a fourth from the net effect of burleson…we may have three fourths…we have no third (whitehurst)…no seventh…and I believe an xtra 6th from Seneca

by Wayward Llama on Sep 7, 2010 4:31 AM PDT up reply actions

John kept bringing up us losing a comp pick for signing and retaining Morey.

Especially if he made the pro bowl this season as a special teamer, and with his reputation he could undeservedly make it. His retirement kept that very low possibility from even having a chance of coming to fruition, but no we couldn’t “earn” a comp pick for him unless he had finished a contract with us. He didn’t even get one started really.

Another guy John’s been putting in that boat is Pitts. If Pitts stays a backup, it’s hard to imagine that he’s going to factor into that either.

by cashless on Sep 7, 2010 5:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Something tells me that we're keeping JJ around, in part, for his pass-blocking skills

I also imagine that we’re going to run a lot of 2 TE sets, with Baker/McCoy helping out the LT, be it Polumbus or Pitts. With Schmitt gone that probably also means we’re primarily going to take the field with 2 TEs, 2 WRs and one RB….and it would be a good idea if that RB could help block and catch passes.

Forsett will start and Washington will probably get nearly as many carries, but it would not surprise me if JJ sees a lot of action this Sunday, especially if we’re playing behind.

by biggiestylez on Sep 6, 2010 11:49 PM PDT up reply actions

If that's the case, then why the fuck did PC keep him around?

Other than being slightly bigger than Leon and Justin, I’m not sure what Jones adds that those other two don’t. Other than a history of actually starting games….but the moves this team has made recently tells me that’s not really all that important anymore.

It almost seems arbitrary which veterans are getting cut and which veterans are sticking around. I’m just trying my best to make some sense out of all of this.

by J.L. White on Sep 7, 2010 12:05 AM PDT up reply actions

Probably because we didn't win any waivers for backs who could replace him.

Jones is clearly #3, or perhaps behind Ganther even. But if he’s willing to get paid a scrub’s salary to stick with the team, he’s worth having around until we can replace him.

by cashless on Sep 7, 2010 12:18 AM PDT up reply actions

I imagine it was a combination of things

1. Most importantly he had zero trade value 2. JJ realized this and took a paycut to stay on a roster 3. JJ never questioned Papa Pete’s Win Foreverererererer motto. 4. Even though he has a lack of talent he has a good work ethic.

Since he caused no detriment to the philosophy he was allowed to stay…. for now. Wilson got us a pick and TJ was never “All In”. I imagine JJ is hanging onto this roster by a thread and is the next to go if some new shiny toy is acquired.

by chris79 on Sep 7, 2010 6:44 AM PDT up reply actions

Think is, JJ doesn't completely lack talent.

So we’d likely be downgrading to let Michael Robinson run, or Chris Henry run, if Washington is tired from a big KR and Forsett is banged up. All it takes is one even minor injury to see JJ, and he’s still a pretty skilled back in a lot of ways.

by cashless on Sep 7, 2010 7:33 AM PDT up reply actions

I beieve Robinson was signed to play Special Teams

And hopefully that means Washington won’t be returning that many kicks now.

by J.L. White on Sep 7, 2010 11:18 AM PDT up reply actions

Robinson was surely signed for special teams, and his versatility.

But without JJ, we’re that much closer to him running the ball.

Robinson is not a KR, Golden Tate is one of the better candidates to replace Washington though, but Washington was a pro bowler and is a very good KR. I expect Washington to keep that job.

I'd have to go back and watch some video from last year

I think we’ll start slow (due to the sheer number of changes, most notably dumping our #1 receiver and #2/3 CB in camp)

Bleh. Pre-maturely clicked "POST"

Our offense and defense will change slightly due to the fact we’ll have players missing, that were key contributors in camp and pre-season, and new players that have practiced with us as little as two weeks playing key positions (offensive tackle, etc).

I think we’ll start off slow and rough, but as new players grasp the scheme, people return from injury, things should smooth out.

I’m hoping Okung doesn’t miss more than this game.

"Pass rushers enter the world of Okung but never leave." - JM

by Nick Andron on Sep 7, 2010 12:07 PM PDT up reply actions

The problem is starting slow can hurt morale quite a bit

And with our lack of depth I can’t see us surviving too many injuries. I still think our offense will be okay (late teens perhaps?) but I can’t see this unit being a plus with the personnel we’re currently fielding.

I'm hoping for part of the record to be 5 or less.

by Kryten on Sep 7, 2010 9:29 AM PDT up reply actions

7-9 or 8-8, sorry.

But I also expect the defensive play calling to be quite different than preseason. It’s the one remaining wild card, to me, that could make the team good.

SF is undoubtedly a better team, and are more likely to win. But this first game is a pretty exciting matchup. I can see how we could beat them.

by jacobstevens on Sep 7, 2010 9:40 AM PDT up reply actions

You know, I really did think we had a shot at a week 1 win

And I haven’t reversed that opinion, but I’m a bit more skeptical. It’s due in part mostly due to the changes made in the past week.

We have new guys that have been on the team for 1-2 weeks (at key positions like offensive tackle) expected to start, we’re now missing what was our #1 receiver, we’re down a VERY talented nickel/cornerback with no one of equal skill/experience to backfill him, we’re still working on this whole Leo thing, etc.

I think these changes will cause kinks to rear their pretty faces week 1. Although I’m confident they’ll be ironed out over the course of the season, it’s very likely they’ll cause us to lose week 1. But that’s OK. In the long run, it really doesn’t matter.

I just wanna see our guys come out swinging, give it a good fight, and make progress. And if it culminates into a win, I’ll be a very happy 12.

"Pass rushers enter the world of Okung but never leave." - JM

by Nick Andron on Sep 7, 2010 12:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I think most of those factors are diminished within this matchup with SF though.

At tackle, we simply have to go with a very makeshift alternative, and Justin Smith and Lawson will get the Jared Allen chip treatment. Pressure will still come. I think Bates’ offense is more adept, inherently, at performing against pressure.

49ers want to run a lot and I don’t expect them to be in a lot of long 3rd down situations. So the impact of the dropoff at nickel is diminished.

Our pressure, well, they’re starting some rookies on the line, but otherwise there’s not a lot to be encouraged about there. I expect it to be an issue. But: Alex Smith. They aren’t adept at or dead set on attacking that weakness.

Smith also hides their other notable weakness, which is pass defense. I kind of expect our offense to look like the good showings of the preseason: start out slow, poor running game, able to move the chains through small handfuls of big passes.

I see the difference between the two teams as substantial: they’re quite good, and we hope we aren’t quite bad. But this matchup, this week, this venue, it feels rather evenly matched to me.

I don't see them picking up much more than a game from last year.

They were really bad last season, they could show noticable improvement and not actually win more games.

We were three plays away from an 11 win season last year

Delanie Walker mugging on 4th and inches in Seattle (or you could pick Frank Gore’s fumble inside the 20 or the fumble on the stupid punt reverse), Brett Favre’s miracle pass to Logan Payne where Mark Roman couldn’t bother to push him out of the end zone, and a halfback pass in Indy (we held Peyton Manning scoreless fer crying out loud).

Our secondary has improved, and the weakest spot on our offense has improved dramatically.

If we don’t win at least 10 games this year I’ll be shocked.

I'd give us

7 wins at best. I’m leaning towards 4 or 5 wins, right now. I think the difference between this year and last is that we will be more competitive in games, but I also think there has been too much turnover on the roster for us to do much better than the last couple of years.

I do think we will see improvement, though, and in another year or two be set to do some great things.

Knock on wood.

Seems like the hawks are big on bringing in guys rehabbing from injury. It will be interesting to see how that works for ’em.
