I just went through all 12 of my teams...

…and not one of them matches up with yours.

You have 4 starting RBs (Forsett being the least of them), 2 #1 WRs, the top DST and 2 very good QBs.

I think Calvin Johnson is in for a monster season, and Charles a great value in my draft.

I figured.

This isn’t a bad team by any means, but I used to play in an 8 team league, and almost every team looked like this. Still, nice job though.

by purplepansy on Sep 9, 2010 9:13 AM PDT up reply actions

A well balanced team, but no super stud.

MJD is as close as you get, but I take 5 other RB’s ahead of MJD. Marshall and Johnson are #1 WR on their teams, but I have my doubts they will produce #1 WR points in fantasy.

You should do well, though, simply because you have no glaring weakness.

by Wilder. on Sep 8, 2010 7:54 PM PDT up reply actions

You don’t think MJD is a stud?! What five would you put ahead of him? Chris Johnson, Peterson, and MAYBE Rice, but who else?

Amazing team. MJD was my top RB this year, I think he’s gonna have a monster year, and Mendenhall is gonna be huge this year, especially the first four games. It also wouldn’t suprise me if C Johnson has a bigger year than Marshall, but both should put up a lot of points.

Depressing thought

The matchup with the Seahawks is so good for the Niners I’m starting Alex Smith this week over Matt Ryan’s bad matchup in Pittsburgh.

That is a great team. Who are you starting at QB? I actually sat Romo...

Fitzgerald is playing, and Anderson can wing the ball.

Out of 12 teams I have...

…Mike Williams is on 10 of them.

Not that I start him on 10, only that I got him for nothing.

In my leagues (Fox) Arian Foster wasn’t even drafted at the beginning, so he is my sleeper RB and I have him on 7 teams.

Sad thing is, I can’t start Hasselbeck, as much as I would like to. Carlson, Williams, and Forsett for now. Washington later depending on how they use him. I also picked up Butler on a few teams in case he explodes and becomes hard to come by.

The past two years I had an ‘all Seahawk’ team but they were the only teams that didn’t make the playoffs for me so I quit doing that.

12 teams? Sweet Jebus.

I find it hard to get attached to a league when I have a lot of them. I tend to get disinterested.

If Bradford has a decent year, Jackson will put points on the board. We all know he can get the yards, he’s just been lacking on the TD front.

Got Aaron Rodgers 7th overall. Not sold on Ray Rice/Frank Gore/Steven Jackson. Then in the 2nd got Reggie Wayne. 3rd I got Desean Jackson. At this rate I won’t trust any RB.

That's because every story is a "you had to be there" one

And every roster or point conversation gets bogged down by the fact that every person is doing their own thing. We are all football fans of the same team, we are not all fans of your team or my team, nor are we aware of your league or it’s rules. The only way to connect a bunch of fantasy players together is talk about REAL football.

Yeah, I don't like talking about my FFL team because my league has a few unusual rules

It’s a keeper PPR league, but QBs also get 6 points per touchdown AND get +1 for completions and -1 for incompletions. To talk about my team and explain all of that each time is annoying.

I'd go Campbell.

Don’t trust Kolb against GB’s defense; he’d be my third choice. Henne won’t get great numbers against the Bills just because it’s so easy to run on them and that’s Miami’s specialty. Campbell gets Tennessee, who had the second-worst pass D last season.

Large leagues are tough

I’m in a 14 man and it makes a huge difference. I think your team looks pretty solid though. Maybe drop the backup TE and try to find a potential sleeper WR? Maybe one of the Seahawks? I think any of them have at least a chance to bust out this year, and they can be overlooked.

by Snuffleupagus on Sep 9, 2010 7:37 AM PDT up reply actions

I was thinking about that

Just hoping that Brady finds Gronkowski a bit in week1 and I can trade him off to someone in dire need of a TE. Looking forward to people with bad QB’s coming to me with offers for Ryan as well, due to the big league the likes of Stafford are starting

Making fantasy football more fun

I’m amazed at how many people seem to take some kind of cold and calculated approach to winning fantasy football. Fantasy football is a great way to engage in the game in a different way.

I never draft from the NFC West, for instance. Why would I want to watch Gore run all over the Seahawks and have it help my fantasy team? I want to have players on my team who I can cheer for virtually every Sunday. I don’t draft Cowboys, and I reach for guys I like. I just assumed most people played this way, but after talking to people, I think I might be the minority.

Do other people have tricks for making fantasy more enjoyable? Or does everyone play to get the best player available and win?

by Snuffleupagus on Sep 9, 2010 7:40 AM PDT reply actions

To be honest in the one league that I have that I really care about with a bunch of my college buddies and guys from back home

I’ll take people in the NFC west. I took Frank Gore with my 1st round pick because I think he’s in for a huge year. The fact that these teams see a lot of the Hawks and the Rams means most likely they will put up big points. That being said, if, like this Sunday, I do have a player on a team playing the Hawks, I root for the Hawks first, and the player a long second. I hope that Gore goes for at least 100 yards and a TD but the Hawks win. My rooting interests are heavily skewed towards the Hawks but if they do get blown out at least there’s a consolation prize.

by Zwakamatsu on Sep 9, 2010 8:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Depends on if it's a money league or for bragging rights.

I’ll never cheer for someone having a big day against the Seahawks, and I won’t enjoy watching Big Ben have a 300/3 game, but I’ll play them in a cash league.

In one of my “for fun” leagues, though, I drafted Hass, BMW, Carlson and the ’Hawks D.

by yuniform on Sep 9, 2010 12:07 PM PDT up reply actions

I pretty much go strictly by a spreadsheet of player rankings I make before the draft

Then in the later rounds pick sleepers I’ve targeted if they are available. No bias for or against a team or division.

by lemonverbena on Sep 9, 2010 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, I don't talk fantasy much.

I run the league at work, and that’s the only reason I’m involved in it at all, is the camaraderie. It’s a distraction from the real game, to me. But I enjoyed it in the past so I can relate to anyone else getting really into it.

Anyway, since I’m not too into it, I don’t get into the discussions, but this was kind of remarkable so I thought I’d share. For the 3rd time in 4 years, I got the 1st overall pick. Yahoo. Draft order is random, but guys are calling BS on me. Facetiously, but then again, underneath that, kind of seriously. I strongly empathize with them, in fact I face-palmed literally when I saw the results. The other 2 times I got 1st overall, I steamrolled to the championship. I almost wish someone else had gotten to pick 1st overall, which I guess exemplifies how competitive I am.

Well, $80 pot, here I come.

Yeah, I’ve never played with the IDP or with KR/PR yards going to the player, but the way I see it the Rams defense sucks so he should be seeing a LOT of returns. At a point for every 10 yards he could be getting about 10 points a game on just kick returns. It’s a PPR league too, and ESPN’s calling him a poor man’s Wes Welker, so he could be a major steal.

Funny fantasy story involving Hass
Tim was in a league with, among other folks, his brother, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. It should shock no one that Matt went QB-heavy with his team, drafting not only himself but also his former real-life Packers teammate, Brett Favre.

As with many people I meet, last year was Matt’s first year playing fantasy. But he showed the objectivity of a wily veteran when, in Week 5, he decided to bench himself for the ol’ gunslinger. It made sense. Favre was coming off a red-hot dismantling of Green Bay on “Monday Night Football,” had seven touchdowns in his past three games and was facing the Rams, among the worst pass defenses in the league.

I’ll save you the trouble of looking it up. Brett threw for 232 yards, only one TD (plus a pick) and finished with 11 fantasy points in ESPN standard scoring. Sixteen quarterbacks finished with more points than Brett that week, including such stalwarts as Josh Johnson and Daunte Culpepper (against the Steelers!).

And sitting on Matt Hasselbeck’s bench was, well, Matt Hasselbeck, who threw for four touchdowns against the Jaguars and finished with 27 fantasy points. More than Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning or any other quarterback that week.

Think about that. He knew the game plan, had as much control over an NFL game as any fantasy player could ever have, wound up as the highest-scoring player at his position in the league …
… and he was sitting on his own bench.
