I walked in and it was about half a dozen people
and one was jamming an electric guitar, one was playing bass, and three were irregularly drumming.
I left 15 minutes later.
My New Year's Eve party consisted of playing a game which rhymes with Lungeons and Dragons until midnight.
Then we switched to Rock Band. This game I will not mention is not easy to play when the person whose title rhymes with “Lungeonmaster” is falling down drunk.

All crappy teams win except the Seahawks! GOOOO
Actually i would take a Seahawks victory in which Charlie Whitehurst threw for 350 yards too. I just don’t want to see a repeat of the Rams-9ers game ending with Seattle “victory”.
I wouldn't rule him out of being a Franchise QB
Because if he keeps playing like this. I would love to have him as a starter for years to come.

Sam Bradford Reads Bible Before Game
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?id=5976560
When the St. Louis Rams play the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, Seattle’s defense will be ready to attack Rams quarterback Sam Bradford. They’ll try to rattle him, hit him, fluster him and get in his face.
But Bradford has a secret weapon.
Before Bradford leaves his hotel, he will read the story of David and Goliath from the Bible. He has read this story before every game.
David and Goliath is a story about an impossible situation. A story about never losing heart when you think you might have something to fear. It’s the story of a young David, emerging as a leader.
Bradford wants his teammates to see a leader in himself.
Excuse my while I blow my brains out

Which teams can still jump us?
Wanted that guy in Seattle
I hate Jayhawks, but I thought that guy was almost criminally underrated in the draft. He was a hell of a kick returner at Kansas too.

Accustomed to mediocrity.
I think if Whitehurst had shown any semblance of ability this year to hold down the fort for 3 or so years,
I’d be ok with winning, but I’m going QB crazy, especially with 5 possible QBs in the 1st round.
The QB situation makes this game even tougher.
Rooting for Whitehurst to succeed and the team to win makes sense as Whitehurst could still have a future with the team, however I also feel that Hasselbeck probably does give the team a better chance to win this game and I do want them to win. It’s really odd.
I want a win but I won't be upset if we lose.
If Bradford leads the Rams into the playoffs the media coverage is going to be insufferable.
Yup, can't watch the game and root for a loss, but come tomorrow, next week and April I may regret it.

It’d be interesting to see what they would’ve done with a top 5 pick.
Trade down for like 5 2nd rounders
by Greetings from the Lord Humongous! on Jan 2, 2011 11:20 AM PST up reply actions
Last time they had a pick that high they dropped down a few picks and took Mayo.
I think Belichick understands how much more valuable those picks are and how little difference there is between 20-32 and second round picks.
Andy Dalton...
Why is he not considered a better NFL prospect? I’ve watched him play a few times and I am not sure what he’s missing that knocks him down so far.
He’s not small.
He’s got a very good arm.
He makes good decisions.
He can run.
Is it because he’s a spread QB and plays in a weak conference?
He doesn't stand out a ton
He’s not fast enought o be a mobile NFL QB. He doesn’t have a giant arm. He comes from a system with limited reads.
Very few QBs make the transition from college to the NFL.

You can say that about a dozen prospects a year
but how many end up being NFL QBs?
by Greetings from the Lord Humongous! on Jan 2, 2011 11:41 AM PST up reply actions
This is a red herring...
you can say this about guys picked in the top 5.
Being an NFL QB is a hard job. Most fail epically.
Not many but that doesn't mean he's not interesting.
He has the tools, the size and the production of a pretty good prospect.
Lots of guys are interesting and they go in the 6th or 7th rounds
Instead of asking “why not Andy Dalton”, maybe we should be asking “what makes Andy Dalton special”? What tools or skills or intangibles does he have that could make him one of the 1-3 QBs drafted per year that finds real success in the NFL?
I’m not saying that Dalton’s anything like bust, I’m just wondering why he deserves so much love (besides being competent and getting the chance to play a highly televised bowl game).
by Greetings from the Lord Humongous! on Jan 2, 2011 11:48 AM PST up reply actions
This is silliness...
There are a lot of QBs with less “tools” than Dalton that succeed in the NFL.
Dalton doesn’t seem to me like a guy that does anything in the top 1% of the world or anything, but he seems like a guy who does a lot of things pretty to very good.
So what makes him special is that he doesn’t really appear to have a real obvious weakness. He just seems like a guy who not given enough credit and I don’t really see why.
Unless you have something…That’s why I asked my question initially. It would be more constructive to add something to the conversation than to be condescending towards everyone who likes the guy.
What makes Aaron Rodgers special? What makes Tom Brady special?
Dalton played a complete game yesterday against a good defense. He was accurate, strong armed, made good decisions and was decently atheltic. He’s been performing at an elite level for a couple years now. He doesn’t have Lucks intangibles, Mallet’s arm or Newtons athleticism but neither does almost every quarterback ever.
Of course very few QBs make it....
but most are not playing for top 5 teams in the nation. He’s not exactly a gimmick QB or anything. His arm may not be great but it’s certainly good enough.
He’s no less mobile than Aaron Rodgers. He seems to me like a guy that’s going to get swooped up by a team we hate around 20-25 and in a few years he’ll get a shot and make us hate ourselves.
I don't get this....
The NFL is full of starting QBs taken after pick 20 in the first round.
I know there are a lot of QBs taken after pick 20 and relatively speaking only a few of them make it.
I also understand that legit hall-of-fame type QBs are generally top 10 picks.
But there are still a lot that do succeed that aren’t top 10 picks.
Responding to this:
He seems to me like a guy that’s going to get swooped up by a team we hate around 20-25 and in a few years he’ll get a shot and make us hate ourselves.
Who might be an example?
Aaron Rodgers
by a “team we hate” I was mostly referring to a good team who may not even need a QB at the moment but will make a move for the QB of the future so that they can be good for another decade without having to suffer like the rest of us for a couple of years.
I've been wondering this since last night too.
He looked good. I think I’d be more interested in Dalton in the third or fourth than Gabbert at 10.
I agree.
If we can’t get one of the top 2 or 3 QBs I’d rather see the Hawks use their first round pick to get someone to help the secondary or pass rush and take someone like Dalton later.
I didn't realize we were getting a CBS game in my market
Sometimes we don’t if the Panthers play.

Why is that automatically problematic though
The NBA doesn’t reward crappy management the way the NFL does. I say this as a lifelong Knicks fan who has suffered through a decade of craptacular play.
Still, the teams that stay bad are universally poorly run. And the good teams are well run. In the NFL, anyone can get to mediocrity just by hanging around.

Honestly we probably can’t compare the 2 in terms of talent pool because of the injuries in the NFL. It makes it nearly impossible for a NFL team to be the same team by the playoffs. Halfway through the season – people just need warm bodies.

Not sure I can agree with that.
Sure, he is great in his one dimension, three pointers. He’s either tied for best, or second best three point shooter in NBA history. Him and Reggie Miller, one or the other.
Ray didn’t contribute PG numbers, but his assists and rebounds are enough higher than Reggie to make the difference.
Rondo is case and point
He was drafted in the 20s. He was the 4th or 5th point guard taken in that draft. Pierce was drafted 10th. Lots of people thought Ray Allen was done when Boston got him.

It's not the same league as its heyday, but why does that matter?
I started watching the NBA when Ewing went to the Knicks. I lived in Jersey, and I think you may be romanticizing how good the bottom dweller teams were in the league at that time.
The league overexpanded, but then so did the NFL. To me the NFL dilution is far more noticeable. In a QB driven league there simply aren’t enough to go around.
In the NBA at least every team has a player or two worth watching. I doubt the entire NFC West has more than one or two legitimate star players — Fitzgerald, Vernon Davis, and maybe Willis.

Awesome final play off Det-Min
Min must have gotten 15 laterals off.
One of which was illegal but fun anyways.
We're now picking anywhere from #7 - #10.
And considering Detroit was one of the QB-content teams ahead of us, this really isn’t a huge deal for us.
So what's important this PM?
Dallas* v. Philly?
Tenn* v. Indy?
Zona v. SF? Can Seattle jump either of them?
Wash* v. Giants?
Seattle can jump SF.
And WAS over NYG would help ensure that happens.
If we lose and SF wins, they will have a significant lead in the SoS.
We’ll need some help to pass them.
I know how it works
Seattle had a worse SoS by one game going into this week, and the games you and I have mentioned are the only swing games.
DAl-Phil is another,,,
A Philly win helps us in the SoS tiebreaker, but a DAL win is a simple jump of one spot. So we want DAL to win, but then to pass SF we’d need both GB and WA to win. GB-Chi counts double— GB win hurts SF and Chi loss helps us.
According to my calculations...
San Fran beats us in strength of schedule only if Dallas, Chicago, and New York all win.
Don't forget an AZ loss counts double for SF...
and a StL win counts double against us. (Since we play each other twice.)
Especially to agents.

The playoffs determine the best team.
Who makes the playoffs is determined by the regular season. They have to have some way to figure out which teams get in. It’s the most equitable system there is, short of making each matchup a series instead single games— or possibly letting a few more teams in….
Are you saying the playoffs ACTUALLY determine the best team?
Or noting that is how it is designed to work?
Two very different things, and I don’t believe playoffs actually determine the best team, they determine who won the playoffs. For example, Giants over Patriots. Patriots were the best team, Giants beat a bunch of teams they were better than, and were able to beat the Patriots on that day.
In theory, if the refs call a fair game.
So, no, it never works out that way.
Obviously.
Playoffs are the only measure of which teams are quality. See: Seahawks in 7 hours.

“It’s time, I know it’s time,” he said, expressing concern about the head injury that sidelined him for Weeks 16 and 17, and adding that he has “no regrets.” “I’m done. It’s never easy for any player. Great group of guys. Didn’t workout this year but great group of guys.” Now 41 years old, Favre apparently is set to walk away as the NFL’s all-time leader in completions, passing yards, and passing touchdowns. He’ll be a first-ballot Hall of Famer in five years, assuming the latest retirement sticks.

So it got called back. Cutler got sacked the next play.

Then again, you could say that about most teams.

9.5 sacks still isn’t bad for a 4-3 DE (or a rookie one at that). Would have been more impressive if it was 3-4 DE, though.

Double-checking them now.
I certainly hope you’re wrong, but I’ll bet you do too.
We'll see.
I am confident in my numbers, but I have been known to make an error on occasion. SF is at .502 this minute, but once they tag 2 losses on AZ, their SoS will drop to about .494, and once we slap StL with 2 wins, ours raises from .489 to about .497. So I guess we’ll see in after the games are done.
Are you getting your numbers from a site?
Or you as nerdy as I, and calculate them yourself?
Both. On Thursday I made a spreadsheet with all W/L data...
And could plug in whatever outcomes I wanted to see the results. But that was at work and I left it there. So today I’m just going off of ESPN’s data and my memory of my spreadsheet.
Here's what I posted last Thursday...
After a fresh look this morning, it appears we CAN finish ahead of both Dallas and SF in the following scenario:
StL > Sea
SF > AZ
Dal > Phil
WA > NYG
GB > Chi
This would put Dallas behind us, and we’d be tied with SF with a .489 SoS— and I think we’d win the next tiebreaker with them. I must have played with my simulator too much yesterday and made a mess… (-twss)… I’ve triple-checked the data this time.
So we actually can pick 6th if the above happens and Houston, Detroit, and Cleveland all win.

Shit, you're right.
Well fuck, that for sure kills our chances of drafting a QB.
