Charlie Whitehurst is not the future (stating the obvious I know).

However, he is the transition QB. The reason is pretty obvious, he doesn't throw the ball down field, he checks down way to much. I remember one play last night in late in the third quarter, on third down, where Mike Williams had burned his defender in the End Zone, instead Whitehurst checked the ball down to Justin Forsett the ball sailed wide left and the Hawks had to punt it. Granted I was way up in the upper tank and had a fantastic view of the whole field. But when a receiver is that open and the QB has time, like Charlie did,  you should be able to notice and throw the ball to the open man. I have a feeling that Pete and Schneider are waiting for the promising round of QB's coming up in the 2012 and 2013 drafts. Maybe even a Matt Barkley and Pete Carrol reunion?

I have a feeling we'll get a good look at him next year.

I can’t see them bringing Matt back, and most likely one of the better QB prospects won’t be available by the time we pick this year.

28 years old though...

I know thats still young but its a whole hell of a lot older than a certain QB in St. Louis who we will be seeing a lot of…

Not like it would if he was playing off the jump.

Don’t give me this “30+ year old guys can’t compete at a high level” B.S.
Look at all the high level MMA guys over 40 who take waaaaaaay more damage then an NFL player ever would.

28 means he potentially has 5+ years of capable NFL time left.

Rich Gannon had most of his NFL success late in career, in his mid 30’s. He’s young enough to have plenty of time left.

Well, here's how I look at it.

If Charlie’s legit, then we have a good quarterback for let’s say the next 5-7 years, maybe. Next year would be a good way to judge it and see.

If he’s not, then coupled with next year’s schedule (which has the potential to be rough) we should then be in prime position for another QB next year.

Aaron Rodgers fell in the draft.

So did Tebow, I know I know, Tebow. I’m just saying that there is a chance that Locker could fall. I would snatch him up in a heartbeat. I’d even trade up pass Washington if he’s still on the board before their pick, but I’m not sure what I’d give up. Any thoughts? Anyone up for trading Lofa or Carlson? I love Lofa, but LB’s are fairly easy to find.

Tebow didn't fall in the draft...people were shocked he went in the first round at all.

“I know I know, Tebow”

Tebow has so far exceeded expectations. Not to mention his natural leadership abilities.

I call bias!

(Not in a bad way, but in the same way that UW fans want Locker, and WSU fans hate Locker.)

Some of us WSU fans only hate Locker during Apple Cup

That said, I was a whole lot more excited about his NFL potential this time last year. I’m not saying I would be at all upset if he fell to us, I just don’t see him being as pro-ready as I used to.

Gotcha.

Llama’s a Florida grad… that was mainly my point… and I agree with you on Locker, by the way, both then and now.

I wish people would erase this idea from their heads.

If the guy wants to still be a starting QB, let him go somewhere else and do it.

I doubt he wants to sit on the bench and “mentor.” Besides, that is what the QB coach is supposed to do.

So he checked down a pass you think he should have thrown to Mike Williams

and that inspired you to write a post called "Charlie Whitehurst is not the future?"

by John Morgan on Jan 3, 2011 5:41 PM PST reply actions

It's not just that one time.

I saw several receivers open down field last night. Again I admit I had an amazing view of the entire field and no 300 pound line men chasing me down. But than he would check down, sometimes he would check down and miss the open checkdown epically. That pass to Forsett ended up being 3 yards wide and sailing under the Seahawks bench. He will be one hell of a transition QB, but the Hawks need to look at a QB who will be in the league longer than a 28 year old.

That is unless Whitehurst pulls a Brett Favre like career. And the reason I pointed out that non-pass to Williams is because it probably cost the Seahawks a TD, instead they had to punt and give a dangerous Sam Bradford and Steven Jackson the ball.

I can see the point, though.

Let’s say we go to 36, you likely have 8 years of Charlie (assuming he pans out) vs. 14 years of Bradford for the Rams.

Unless he turns out to be good.

Which he still could.

Before you just him in the least, go look at the Game Logs for Matt Hasselbeck and review his first three starts, in 2003 for the Seahawks. They were terrible and the team lost all 3 games, and then he was benched.

Charlie’s 2nd game was a win, he put up decent numbers, and showed some intriguing tools. Personally, I am not going to jump the gun on any statement about Charlie and the future of the team one way or another. The one thing I will say is, he should have been starting sooner, and had he of been playing from week one, we’d know a lot more about him than we do now, and I also think we could have another win or two on our record. But, that’s the past, nothing we can do about it.

But the future? It’s still up in the air. If he looks as good in start 3 compared to start 2 as he did in start 2 compared to start 1? Well, then what? Still willing to write him off?

Let’s give the guy a chance.

My opinion about his age and what I noticed from my seat in section 319 row Z on Sunday night

But than again I’m not an NFL scout or coach or anything. It’s been frustrating watching Hasselback and Whitehurst miss open or loosely covered Wide outs…

He'll get his chance - but -

Now that Charlie is a proven winner, can we trade him for San Diego’s number 2 QB?

by Jon Springer on Jan 4, 2011 6:31 PM PST up reply actions

It makes me laugh that

that article had us picking first in the ‘11 draft – But thinking about it, it’s not that far off the truth: pretty much any stat you pick (DVOA, points differential, pretty much any offensive stat, most defensive stats) has us as one of the worst 5 teams in the league, and yet here we are as divisional champs and in the play-offs.

I don’t care what they say, that is some achievement, and I’m fully on board with Charlie taking the reins for a year or two while we develop a new QB. The NFC West is mediocre in the extreme, and will be so for a few more years at least, meaning that it should be possible to remain competitive during what was always going to be a major rebuilding project.

by Raphaelas on Jan 3, 2011 10:04 PM PST up reply actions

I don't know about it doing so for the next few years...

The Niners are a good QB and a decent coach from being a good team. And if the Rams had receivers that could catch the ball, Sunday night’s game would probably have been a different story. The Cardinals will probably suck for awhile, though.

by splintrdmind on Jan 3, 2011 10:41 PM PST up reply actions

The Cards need a more aggressive approach to D and a new QB.

And all of the sudden the NFC West is a really compelling race.

And citing “unnamed sources.”

Very close to completely worthless.

I've said in a few threads now

that I think the NFC West could be one of the best divisions in a few years, if the Seahawks get a good QB and some help on both lines, and the Niners and Rams continue to develop.

by splintrdmind on Jan 4, 2011 12:03 PM PST up reply actions

Niners? Possibly.

The window will begin to close. They’ve wasted a lot of years bopping around between coaches and coordinators. I’m always been of the opinion that Alex Smith could be good if given some stability and a decent set of receivers.

If Alex Smith played for another team in a different division

I’d feel bad for the kid. As it stands, I wouldn’t mind seeing him be successful with a different team, especially as it would be like twisting the knife in the Niners’ chests.

by SmartAssCoug on Jan 5, 2011 9:16 AM PST up reply actions

Whitehurst's 5.1 yards per attempt are troubling (5.3 against the Rams)

I think it was more Bates though, p[laying it safe and not wanting turnovers, and Whitehurst doing his best to limit those by throwing it away or running. Whitehurst looks pretty prone to interceptions thusfar in his early career. Give him credit for playing within his abilities last sunday though.

You see so much more from the nose bleed seats then on tv

I do not get to to many games but I am always amazed at being able to see the whole field and the things you miss when watching on tv. I always record the games and watch them after I get home just to see if I can see things I noticed at the stadium. Over the years I cannot recall how many times I have seen receivers wide open that have not been thrown to. I just give it to read progression and how much time the QB has to go through his reads.

Give Charlie the start against the Saints. HE EARNED IT!!!!!!!!!!

by eohawkfan on Jan 3, 2011 9:47 PM PST reply actions

That's not even possible,lol

Your memory seems to be off, since there is no way in hell that Charlie ever had more than 3-4 seconds inside the pocket, no less your ridiculous number of 8-9 seconds. At the very least you could have said 8-9 minutes so everyone thought you were joking around.

I just need me some Charlie, and bad. I’m cold man, cold.
