Chart of Olindo Mare's 2010 Kickoffs
I had thought, and possibly read some comments on game threads, that Olindo Mare was losing a bit of power on his kickoffs as the regular season wore on. I created this scatter chart of every non-onside kickoff of his this season. There are lots of things the chart doesn't show, such as were the Seahawks kicking away from a good returner (Hester, Stevens-Howling, etc), or what the conditions were. I also put every Touchback at the 0 yard line, whereas he could of kicked it up into the Hawks Nest as far as I know. What the chart does show, is he still had a pretty good foot as the season progressed, but had a few standout terrible kicks as the season drew to a close. Thoughts? (First Fan Post, take it easy on me.)

If I'm not mistaken, Olindo sat out a few practices this season

I think he has been nursing a back problem

A "touchback" problem?

He's had leg problems earlier in his career
I think that was why he was originally available as a FA.

A placekicker with leg problems getting drafted would indeed be pretty astounding.

Or traded for
The point was that he was released because of injury.

You also might need to include game situation.
If this data includes squip or onside kicks, it’d be problematic.
Onsides are taken out because they are noted the game log
Squibs are not noted, so they could be in there. If there a returner with threat back there, some of those 59 yard kickoffs could be because of that. I could do a chart of just the 1st kickoff of the game, at the Chiefs his first kickoff was 59 yards. Against the Rams it was 56.
9 out of his 16 first kickoffs of the game were 70+
He didn’t start kicking less than 70 on his first kickoff until Week 8.
I wonder what other typical strong-legged kicker's plots would look like over a season in comparison.
Is it kind of standard fare?
I have noticed, though, that the more times he has to kick off in a game, the less touchbacks he'll get.
But I would think that’s normal.
Great graph, dude!
Very informative. I hope he isn’t getting too old for this. We did franchise the guy after all.
This wooden soul of mine, it cannot ever climb from places it has fallen: In between where light can shine. It never falls in line, it barely has a spine, like branches severed from the vine. Like it was faulty by design.
I pointed out in last game's thread that I thought I'd noticed less touchbacks from Mare.
Someone else pointed out that as the ball gets colder, it’s harder to kick. Certainly wind is a factor, too.
If you want to take conditions into account...
…might be useful to do a similar chart using red dots for the opposing kicker in all of those games. If the red dots show kickoff length that are similar to Mare’s outliers, then maybe the outliers aren’t really outliers after all.
