For a 2012 first rounder and a conditional 2013 pick (2nd that can turn into a 1st). I'm ecstatic we're not giving up that kind of a price for Palmer. Seriously, that could be two firsts. Insane.

Schefter confirmed it as official.

I understand that Campbell getting hurt may have bumped up the offer for Palmer

But if Mike Brown had a first round pick on the table for Carson prior to this and is only now pulling the trigger… like you said it would be insane

Mike Brown got a lot of crap for how he dealt with it

But he looks pretty savvy right now. Wait until a team panics, then pull the trigger.

Wonder if he was truly intent on not trading him regardless

and then changed his mind after Palmer’s lost so much of this season and they’re happy with Dalton, or if he always was willing to trade him for the right price but it was this high and he never budged, expecting there would be a scenario like this. I dunno.

Head of catering.

In Breaking Bad, the car wash owner would only sell the car wash to Walt for an insane amount of money because of his hate for Walt.

Everything has a price, but sometimes you’re in the position emotionally to turn down everything that’s not a complete ripoff and sometimes it works out. Even if it didn’t work out, Brown wouldn’t have regretted his decision, in my opinion.

I'm thinking Brown would have stuck to his word and not traded Palmer

… after all, Brown is the same guy that turned down two first round draft picks (offered by the Washington Redskins) for Chad Johnson OchoCinco.

Exactly -- given that it was the Raiders,

we really should have gotten more for Curry. This trade makes ours look even worse than it did last week.

I think we fleeced the Raiders on the same level, relatively speaking.

That was the reasoning.

He was a guard that moved to tackle and performed quite competently. I, like many others, figured that he would grow into the position and be even better over the next few years. Obviously it didn’t happen but there was cause for excitement at the beginning.

So is Carpenter

It also helps to have a functional Offensive Line when you draft a young QB. Seeing as the ‘Hawks have taken to OTs and a G in the last two drafts and I’d say they agree.

Build the OL, get receiving threats, then draft a QBotF.

by CMC_Stags on Oct 18, 2011 9:07 AM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

All things considered, if both become stars at their position (big if) I would prefer Dalton over Carpenter...

To be clear though, I was happy and still am happy with our draft, I am simply arguing that Dalton has shown some promise, and while it is to early to grade him outright, it is foolish to claim he has no upside.

by savedbG on Oct 18, 2011 3:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Upside is a matter for the scouts eye

and its not foolish to say that a qb has limited potential based on their own opinion, your own expert opinion just views it differently.

by Jazzercise! on Oct 18, 2011 5:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Obviously a star QB is better than a star RT.

But the odds a of late first round Quarterback becoming a star are vastly smaller than those of a Tackle.

by Fumanchuchu on Oct 18, 2011 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions

It is also his first year in the league

Quarterbacks tend to get better as they gain more NFL experience. A quarterback is average as rookie full time starter could have a pretty bright future. Obviously it is still only 1/3 of a season in, but Dalton is out performing Carson Palmer’s rookie year at this point. Dalton doesn’t have Palmer’s physical skills so perhaps his growth is limited, but marignally looking better than Jackson as a rookie is pretty impressive accomplishment.

For all the talk of Carp struggling and just now starting to come into his own, Moffitt’s been pretty solid all year long. He’s made his own share of rookie mistakes, of course, and it always looks bad when a guy blows past a guard on the pass rush, but I have no worries with him and am not sure I’d be saying the same re: Dalton with some replacement level guard on the right side.

I personally don't see where this trade is so WOEFULLY BAD as some are saying.

I’m not defending it, but given the contextual factors of their organization right now, and they’re one (awesome) fourth quarter in football from being 5-1 I don’t think it’s that ridiculous.

I hate playing this game, but it sounds like they could have traded “Lawrence Jackson” and “Josh Wilson” two late first/second round picks that—shocker— ended up being unsuccessful for Carson Palmer and a chance to (potentially) stamp their playoff passport the next few years. The demand on quarterbacks is quite high. This is the same league that valued Matt Cassel as a 2nd rounder, Kevin Kolb as a 2nd(?) rounder and recent all-pro (or just pro-bowler?)

Again, if I’m a Raider fan, I don’t know if I’m chest-bumping at the water cooler today, but I’m probably not that motivated to start polishing up my pitchfork either.

Wake up, roll one up, sit back for 7 hours and watch college highlight videos while Kiper’s hair is on mute until you pick.

They've got a second rounder left.

And 5 hours to burn it.

No they don't, they gave their second rounder to New England in a draft pick swap

I think they have a third, a fifth and a sixth?

Right

1st on Palmer, 3rd on Pryor, 4th on Campbell.

So would that be preferable to how we treated the QB situation, guys?

Very interesting stuff..

I gotta say I am glad this trade happened. Carson Palmer’s best seasons by far were 2005 and 2006. He has been really a second tier QB since then and his career almost ended entirely. Obviously the Bengals organization was pretty dysfunctional.

Campbell’s numbers as a Raider are about in line with Palmer’s career averages. So, they had no reason to do a deal like this until Campbell got hurt. Of course, the Raiders have a great running game so perhaps Palmer will outperform..

I hate to say it, but the Raiders season has a really interesting storyline now with Davis dying, Palmer in, and a 9 year playoff drought. Their home game on New Years Day against the Chargers (last game of the season) could end up being a real classic. Yay, football!

They've got Janikowski,

McFadden, Heyward-Bey, Micheal Huff, and Rolando McLain all on the roster. And they did pretty good with that Nnamdi guy for a while.

I agree that it's an overpay, but at the same time... I think draft picks are getting overrated slightly.

If Carson Palmer could regain what he was several years ago, not even be a Pro Bowl QB, but if he could be a Matt Schaub-like QB, I might take it. The Raiders can win that division. Not sure how long its going to take for him to get ready in the offense, but I know Hue Jackson is familiar with him from his Bengals days and probably isn’t worried about it.

Maybe they looked at the state of their division

KC has a lot of young talent – but pretty much got destroyed by injuries this year. They’re going to have a decent draft slot probably next draft.

Denver… well they’re starting Tebow and just traded their best receiver, so yeah.

San Diego is beatable and hasn’t looked that great thus far.

So maybe Oakland wants to just go for it now. Win Today!

If they were a QB away from being a SB contender

But the defense is giving up 25 points a game. They must be counting on Curry to step in and fix it.

From what I remember too..

They did a great job drafting the past couple of years. Why flip your momentum (and future) for a QB who had his best years at least 5 years ago? I think Palmer is a good QB, but one safety blitz from being lost for the year.

I think we could have nabbed Palmer at one time, but the FO saw that line of ours and said “save it.” Now that they seem to be getting better every game, getting that young stud QBOTF is a perfect scenario for the future.

For some reason, I just see Matt Barkley here next year. Just a hunch.

Isn't Campbell only supposed to be out 6 weeks or so?

At worst, he would miss the rest of the season and be completely healthy by training camp. Does he fit with what the Seahawks do? He’s not a speedster, but he’s also not a statue, and he has a pretty strong arm.

by mkries on Oct 18, 2011 1:12 PM PDT reply actions

Hey I got proof man Curry IS the the defensive fix.

All you gotta do is go to Silver & Black pride and read what they are saying. That many idiots can’t all be wrong.

by Richard fg7 on Oct 18, 2011 2:21 PM PDT reply actions

Most of them seem excited about the trade,

which is alright, I guess. What I find kind of funny is that they consider Pryor the QBOTF.

by mkries on Oct 18, 2011 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Curry probably will be much more successful in the silver and black -

remember his first 5 or 6 games where he ran roughshod over teams before he was told by the coaching staff to behave and he tried to be “professional”. I think he needs a place where he is allowed to be “nasty” – and Seattle is not really that place. At least Curry is not in Pittsburgh.

As for Pryor, now he has three years behind Palmer to learn the craft – I think Palmer (and Hue Jackson) will be a good mentor for the obviously entitled kid. Pryor does not seem like a bad seed, just someone who hasn’t had a strong father figure or disciplinarian in his life. I think Tressel seemed more like the “boys will be boys” kind of guy.
