Ask a Giants fan

Hello Seahawks fans, my name's Will. I usually do this thing. You may remember me from such great fanposts as "Ask a Giants Fan (2010)" and.... well that's all I have for the Simpsons allusion.

I see we've already became well acquainted with each other. Definitely hyperbole on both sides, but hey if you guys are going to dish out some humor, be prepared for it back.

In the spirit of finding common ground, I present this:

Sports_seahawksvscowboys2_medium

via planetrobot.net

Star-divide

Some random stats that have no bearing to anything:

Eli Manning is 2-2 vs the Seahawks, including winning two of his last starts and 1-1 in Seattle.

Tarvaris Jackson (the only Tarvaris in NFL history) is 2-0 vs the Giants, although one game was vs predominantly back ups at the end of 2008.

Tom Coughlin is 3-5 overall vs the Seahawks, 1-3 while coaching the Jags, 2-2 as the coach of the Giants

Pete Carroll is 1-1 vs the Giants, with his last win in 1999 as head coach of the Patriots.

Questions? Want to express your misplaced Eli hate? And no just because I'm from New Jersey means I have a bad tan or have met Snooki.

(Also, if I say LOL, I mean Lord of the Lambs. No l33t sp33k hear.)

Hello.

I’m looking forward to the match up between Osi and Okung, our Left Tackle.

What matchups are you most looking forward to this week?

We don't do man assignments

Our corners cover the left and right sides, and never change. It’s pretty easy to exploit for offensive coordinators.

Please

Do elaborate, I had thought that the Giants were always one of the more solid defensive teams out there. I can’t imagine you’re thinking about the DL, those guys are really good (when not hurt/holding out)

Hence to fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence lies in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting.

We play a zone defense...a weird version of the Tampa-2

And our CBs are not zone corners. They excel in man-to-man coverage. The injuries in our secondary have further exposed the zone scheme that we are in right now.

Also, while our LBs are decent, I do not think they are good enough for a zone scheme. They’d be much better in a base 4-3. I’d like to think most Giants fans believe this to be the case.

It should also be said

that assignment coverage can be exploited, too. Put em in motion to get their corners where you want them. Make them defend more than just the sideline, keep cutting inside. Got a good run support corner like Barber? And he’s assigned to a man? Line up his man to the opposite side of where you run. Or line him up in the slot and run a counter. It’s easier to set the edge against a guy with the size of a corner.

You can set things up more by guiding them around by the nose, if you know where a guy is always going to be you can use that against them.

Head of catering.

Every system is exploitable

I just think LCB/RCB is particularly badly suited when you have two CBs that play very different styles, and the opposing OC can pick and choose who to beat said style with.

Haven't the Seahawks always done this?

And most teams? I remember Trufant starting on the left (which is the strong side, where the top receiver usually lines up), then switched to the right to protect his injured shoulder. Now he’s back at the left, which is typically where the top receiver lines up, since most quarterbacks are right handed.

They might get 75 yards

But its gonna take them 30+ runs to do it. Im not a huge fan of Manning, he is kinda culter schizophrenia, but i wouldnt be suprised if the giants abandon the run game and go with Manning throwing. That could be a catch 22 for them cause when brock and clemons get teed up, they usually hit hard. Tat is when Earl and Kam start picking off passes(if kam is back this week)

by Oliudyen on Oct 5, 2011 9:48 PM PDT up reply actions

if we rush 30+ times

it’s either an OT game or an early blowout. our OC gets allergic to the run at times. expect 25ish rushes b/t the two backs.

Manning is having an amazing season right now, he’s no.3 overall in passer rating, and has only thrown 2 picks so far. the plays that were avoided sacks/rushed throws – INTs last year are now take a sack/live another down downs. i think most Giant fans are confident if we have to depend on his arm to get us there Sunday.

Not sure

But it’s been my experience that when a NFC foe either beat’s you significantly or beats you the last game of your old stadium or knocks you out of the playoffs, you can bet you wiil see that team again next season or maybe seems like we have been playing you guys a lot in the past few years though.

by Late for Dinner on Oct 5, 2011 3:00 PM PDT up reply actions

The answer

lies here

More succinctly, last year we played because we both had the same ranking in our division in 2009 (3rd).
Every year, the intraconference games rotate each year. For example, the NFC East will face: NFC West (2011), NFC South (2012), NFC North (2013), NFC West, NFC South, NFC North, and so on and so on, unless they change the scheduling technique.

All but 2 games each year have been known since 2002.

If we play again next year, it’s hopefully because both teams finished in first.

We've got the same game vs. Chicago this year too.

The league has you playing 6 of your 12 non-division conference-mates every year. It’s got to be a MASSIVE pain to have to get every single team playing someone different every year (and it’s just barely possible). My main beef is that they should find a way to flip who is home and away, but I imagine that could be pretty tough as well.

Well for the intraconference games

the home away switch ever 3 years. This year you guys play on the east coast, in 3 years the Giants will go out West.

As for the “same place as last year” games, I have no idea how they determine home/away except that one is home and the other is away

This is true unless you are on the West Coast.

Then the rules that were set up to benefit east coast teams may go into effect, such as the “Steelers never come to Seattle” rule because that would involve too much travelling for them, or some such. (Forget about the fact that we get to enjoy far more travel and those wonderful 10am our time game times.)

Er no

NFC vs AFC matches alternate every 4 years.

**looked it up, wow that’s weird. Yeah you guys have the same schedule home/away as in 2007. The steelers did play in seattle in 2003. Take out the superbowl game (which is technically a neutral field), and the split is 7 games in seattle 9 in Pittsburgh. 8-8 regular season though

No, it really is an East Coast protective rule.

Seriously, it’s something about how they only travel west so many times a year. The rule only works east to west though, not the other way around.

While SF stayed in Cincinnati for a week because they had two straight east coast road games. God forbid it happens to the Patriots.

by Stay Off the Flowers on Oct 6, 2011 6:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Well that's being unfair

There’s more teams in the North East than on the whole West coast. More than half of the NFL is in the eastern time zone as well. You have to expect things like that happen every once in a while.

And while that affects things now short term, in the future it’ll fit and there won’t be problems

Self-praise is for losers. Be a winner. Stand for something. Always have class, and be humble.
-John Madden

by Willgfass on Oct 6, 2011 7:49 AM PDT up reply actions

That means it's even more biased.

If there are more teams on the East Coast, they have to deal even less with this travel situation than West Coast teams do. The only change that happens with them is they play later games (for day, 4pm/7pm), while West Coast teams have to travel East more often and play early games (10am/1pm).

It’s really the 10am thing that bugs us as fans, not even the travel. Yet the NFL panicked when the Pats had to go to California and Washington in a row.

I don’t know, maybe we’re being irrational and it really isn’t a big deal – but it just screams protectionism for the media darlings as whiskey chainsaw said.

by Stay Off the Flowers on Oct 6, 2011 8:04 AM PDT up reply actions

yes

it’s the 10am business that’s ridiculous.

west coast teams already have to go east more than vice versa, but the least the league schedulers could try once in a while would be to make it a 4 pm (1 pm PST) game. it seems like it’s always a 10 am start for the west coast team, while two east coast teams play the later game.

by roddychops on Oct 6, 2011 11:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Oh i definitely agree

that is was an over reaction, I just don’t think that there’s as much of a controversy as it’s being made out.

And I agree in a perfect world the west coast teams wouldn’t start at 10:00 your time, but it’s not a perfect world. Theres ~ 17 teams in EST, and 4 in PST. There’s going to be a discrepancy unfortunately.

So how hard would it have been to grant us a concession and allow later game times?

But then, that would be a concession towards something other than east coast focus, so THAT wasn’t going to happen.

West Coast, you get to travel more, AND you get shit game times. But hey, at least it’s more fair for our east coast brethren. (And that’s the important thing, dammit!)

Cruz and Manningham played about equal number of snaps last week, which I find really surprising. There seems to be big miscommunication problems between Eli and Mario because Manningham is usually open but the ball is thrown somewhere else. Once those get figured out the Passing game is only going to be better.

Eternally looking forward to someone making a Seahawks song based off of Lil' Jon's "Shots" song named "Hawks!"

by Bobby Cink on Oct 5, 2011 6:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Answer to both

There’s definitely been a ton of injuries.
We have 8 guys on IR according to Wiki. Two were definite established starters, Jonathan Goff and Terrell Thomas. Goff is an extremely good run defender and all reports said he was making great strides in pass defense.
TT’s injury hurts the most. He’s not our best corner, but he has the most utility. This year they were going to put him in a Charles Woodson esque role, where in nickel defense, he’d be the slot guy where he could use his great tackling and blitzing ability to use.
Including TT, we have 3 CBs on IR. the other two aren’t world beaters, but definitely hurts the depth real bad, especially since Prince (our first round pick) broke his foot in the first practice and hasn’t played a game yet.
Other notables are Marvin Austin, our 2nd round pick, and Domenik Hixon who was our 3rd WR. Cruz seems to have ably replaced him though.
Osi is finally heatlhy, at a very fortuitous time. Tuck (our most important defensive player by far) injured his Neck in the third preseason game and hasn’t been completely healthy since. He’s missed two games and lots of us are worried that his injury is worst than what a “burner” would be.

As for who we have…
The linebackers have been a pleasant surprise. Michael Boley has been underwhelming at best the past 2 years, but has been playing lights out this year. Kiwanuka has been moved to the SLB and has been solid there. We have an interesting philosophy for defense. In our base 4-3, our MLB will be rookie Greg Jones, along with Boley and Kiwi on his sides. In Nickel, we use our other rookie Jacquain Williams with Boley, our two fastest linebackers. Williams has been a very pleasant surprise, and had 10 tackles vs Philly two weeks ago.
Kiwi is also moved all over the place, and sees time at DE and DT at times.

As for the corners… they’ve held up. Ross was turrible (misspelling intentional) the first two weeks. Since then, he’s really played well. There’s been some debate on how much the scheme has changed, in the first two weeks we seemed to play a lot of off zone, but the corners wayyyyyyyyyyy off the wide receivers (which would explain grossman throwing for 300 yards against us), while more recently they’ve been in the same time zone.
We also play a lot of 3 safety sets, probably more than any other team. We did this last year too, but with a twist. Right now, Rolle becomes the Nickel Corner in 3 receiver sets. He’s held his own, but obviously isn’t his strongest spot. Still better than the other corners right now I guess.

by Willgfass on Oct 5, 2011 6:37 PM PDT up reply actions

That's a hell of a writeup! Thanks!

So to follow up: if you were the Seahawks, where would you try attacking this defense? 3 safety sets don’t bode well for downfield passes since you probably have someone over the top on each play. Perhaps developing screens to hit someone in the flats? Misdirection plays sound as if they could be really effective on you guys.

Eternally looking forward to someone making a Seahawks song based off of Lil' Jon's "Shots" song named "Hawks!"

by Bobby Cink on Oct 5, 2011 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions

No prob

Hmm well the biggest issue we’ve had is the over the middle behind the linebackers’ zone and in front of the safeties. When ever we play off zone, there almost always are holes. Same deal on the sidelines in between the corners zone and the safeties’ deep zones.
Last year we were really good vs screens, as our DEs were really good at sniffing them out. Dunno about this year, especially if Tuck is still out. The one I remember had a good gain.

Welcome!

The 2-0 Tarvaris Jackson stat is interesting, good find.

The Giants are pretty far off my radar for some reason. What’s it like playing in the NFC East this year? Weird season so far.

Pretty sure he'd be 2-1

if he played all of the game last year, but he got knocked out and Joe Webb took over.

It has been a very weird season. The Redskins defense has become much better and looks very good. It’s taken a huge 180 from the porousness it was last year.

There have been some article saying it’s now the “NFC LEast”, but that’s extreme hyperbole imo. I’m still wary of the Eagles until they lose 7 games. I’ve always thought Dallas was extremely overrated since the beginning, but you can’t count them out.

are pretty average/mediocre, which is equal to the best in the West. It’s all relative to media scrutiny, so a loss can bring you guys down in public opinion. SF is being talked about as world-beaters, when they’re probably 8-8 at best.

Do the Giants still use their "power-blocking" scheme? And if so, could you explain how its different from everyone else's?

Also, are you happy with your O-Line system, or would you rather have smaller lineman to have more effective pass protection?

by B0w1-of-R1ce on Oct 5, 2011 7:39 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

Yes, we still use a power blocking scheme.

We pull our tackles and guards a LOT more than most teams. We aren’t fans of stretch plays, but we will occasionally break out a counter play once in awhile. We will almost exclusively run to the right, with Chris Snee and Kareem McKenzie. I don’t think David Baas will be playing, but he would be running around like a crazy mofo as well.

I’m definitely happy with my OL system. Peeps can say what they like about Eli, but he’s one of the best play action QBs in the league. Therefore, to be at his best, its imperative that we establish a power run game.

Our OL isn’t huge, but it isn’t small and quick. Its more somewhere in the middle….moderately large, moderately quick linemen.

Snee is our best OLer

He’s been an All-Pro the last three years. Last year we would have added McKenzie to that list, but so far he’s looked like age has caught up with him, and while it isn’t time to panic yet with him, we could be getting close to that point.
O’Hara had some really nasty injuries last year, and only played 4 or 6 games. His pro bowl selection was a sham to the highest degree. When he played, we were actually worst rushing than when he was out.
Kind of surprising that he was released, it also sort of wasn’t after reports came out how injured he really was. The fact that no other team has signed him (especially considering the dearth of good centers) just goes to show that Reese was right.

Weakness is definitely David Diehl. He was our LT for most of last year. He was alright vs power guys, but weak vs speed rushers so moving him to guard would seemingly solve that problem. In the first week, he gave up 3 sacks, and has looked shaky the next game. Like the rest of the line, he seems to be improving, but really, you can only go up from his horrible performance vs Washington.

I think, more to the point, there are bandwidth/page speed issues there.

SBNation seems to encourage threads like these used in almost a chatroom-like environment, where people post quick quips instead of longer, thought-out posts. On game days especially a standard forum layout with 30 responses per page would leave the average user in the dust almost immediately. On the flip side, if you have 1,000+ posts on a single page, and every single one of them could be edited by whomever initially posted them instead of just the moderators, that can take forever to load on some computers and would probably put a decent-sized dent into the server usage as well.

Do you want my answer?

or the schizophrenic New York sports radio answer?

The later depends on how good the Giants are (3-1? Great coach! 0-1 start? CAN HIS ARSE!)

As for me, I think he’s a very good coach, one of the better ones in Giants history. I’ve always thought the idea of him losing the locker room are way overblown, and we know we can win the superbowl with him.
He definitely has some negatives in that some times he is too conservative with the game plan and isn’t always the greatest at in game adjustments. Like the Giants franchise itself, TC is loyal to sometimes a fault (e.g. our Special Teams coach stinks and has stunk for a while but he’s still here).

Overall, I definitely like the guy. I’ll be sad to see him go, but when he eventually does (on his own terms I hope), i’d like to see the Giants go find a young up and coming guy who has offensive creativity (a Mike McCarthy esque guy).

Short n sweet...

Worries
1. Tucks,Baas Health
2. Lack of a running game thus far
3. Run D which coincides with Tucks health
Strengths
1. Eli’s stella start
2. The day these 3 guys get on the field together .. So future strength: Justin Tuck, JPP and Osi (But still a strength)
3. Red zone D has been insanely good ( Although Beanie Wells got us a couple times last week)

I may not be the most noble of men but in a town of lepers, im the one with the most fingers.

Giant LB'z SUCK!!? Mark Herzlich, Greg Jones,Williams,Paysinger...Maybe not..

by Troy O on Oct 5, 2011 9:26 PM PDT up reply actions

i'll bite

strengths:

QB. We’ve had a franchise QB for 7 years now. He’s clutch, great in the 2-minute, and stays healthy. (In other words, he’s the opposite of Tony Romo and Mike Vick). Because it’s new york he gets a lot of flak, but he’s the man.

DL / pass rush: The Giants have 3 top-flite DEs who would start on any team in the league in Osi, Tuck, and JPP (2nd year now). They even have a solid 4th in Dave Tollefson. They have Big Chris Canty from FA, and despite letting fred robbins and barry cofield walk, have drafted Linval Joseph and Marvin Austin (IR) who should be ample replacements. And of course there’s Rocky Bernard. The Giants are built on 4-man pressure, and thus Jerry Reese has built a vicious 4-man front.

Front office / TEH LBZ: The Giants have drafted really well in the last 4 or 5 years, resisting the urge to draft for need or sign big-name free agents to fill needs. Where they have signed free agents, it was for core principles (Bernard, Canty) and Rolle was a bit of an exception. It’s saved them money and alllowed them to develop talent at LB such as Jon Goff (IR) Greg Jones (rd 6) Jacquain Williams (rd 6), as well as possible down-the-road contributors in Spencer Paysinger and Mark Herzlich. That’s 4 cheap, in-house LBs. Consider too that we’re using former DE Kiwanuka at SLB because of the surplus we have from drafted DEs.

WEAKNESSES:

1. The O-line is in flux. This is the first year in their position full-time for Beatty the new LT, Diehl in at guard, and Baas (injured) and Boothe (a backup G) at center. We have a good OL coach and haven’t been killed for it, but they’re not running effectively. Meanwhile the long-consistent right side of the line is beginning to show some cracks with Snee and McKenzie.

2. TEH INJUREEZ. We’ve lost, in part or in full: (top 2 DEs, DT Marvin Austin, MLB Jon Goff, SLB Clint Sintim, CB Terrel Thomas, CB Prince Amukamara (thats our rd 1 and rd 2 picks btw) 2 backup CBs. That’s why this defense isn’t top 5 in the league. Guys have stepped up well, but there is a talent deficit from what we’d have on paper compared to what’s on the field. On Offense, we’re fairly well depleted at WR after Steve Smith’s injury / defection and Hixon’s IR … and Barden’s PUP.

3. I think we’re still exploitable in big-play passing, but our safety strength has improved that. The Giants have alternately looked good and bad against the pass and run through 4 games. It would be nice to see them able to shut down both for 4 quarters instead of being torched By Rex Grossman or Beanie Wells.

Details of the operations of an interstate dog fighting ring were revealed, with some portions involving drugs and gambling. Gruesome details involving abuse, torture and execution of under-performing dogs ... He admitted to being involved in the destruction of 6–8 dogs, by hanging or drowning...

by Simms-McConkey on Oct 9, 2011 8:33 AM PDT up reply actions

In regards to the running game concerns

What would you single out as the biggest culprit?

1) Poor blocking by the O-Line (something Seahawk fans know all about)?
2) The RB himself (an unlikely scenario unless they’re playing injured)?
3) Or the O-Coordinator making it too obvious when he’s going to run (something we saw last week)?

or is it door #4, something else?

I ask mostly because Seattle has had a very slow start to our run game and I like comparing notes with fans of other teams who think their ground game is struggling. With the Seahawks, it has mostly been poor O-Line performance, but I chalk that up to youth and inexperience. Just in case no one has told you, the O-Line that will be facing you has a grand total of 49 starts as Seahawks. For all 5 linemen combined.

Run blitz all your linebackers and disguise your safeties. Always have 7 men in the box, Have both your safeties roving around. We really don’t have a great intermediate game. It’s usually checkdowns/screens or fly/post routes. Eli sometimes gets confused with disguised coverages (dunno why…just brain farts), so do alot of that.

On offense, run to the left side. You won’t get anywhere on the right side, but you’ll probably average a 5+ YPC on the left. Misdirection plays work against us because we tend to overpursue. If you find one on one matchups, ANY one on one matchups, just go ahead and exploit it. Our CBs are playing well, but they will wear down by the end of the game.

Has the New York Football Giants

Faced much no-huddle this year?

With the depth being a concern on the defensive side, this may become an issue.

I feel like they should really incorporate rules to prevent that.

Like injured players have to sit out until the next first down…

Or if it turns out the guy isn't really injured, you get to injure him.

I like to call that the “YOU WANT SOMETHING TO CRY ABOUT I’LL GIVE YOU SOMETHING TO CRY ABOUT” rule.

Haha

But seriously, every team does it. We just got caught doing it badly

Bengals.

Sam Wyche and the Bengals. If memory serves, the Hawks trotted it out in a playoff game that they eventually lost 21-14. The Bungles went on to lose the most boring Super Bowl in the history of Super Bowls. I had to turn it off with 2 minutes to go, it was so boring.

Yup it was the Bengals playoff game.

I'm curious...

I know there were a crap load of pissed-off Rams fans ranting about players faking injuries.

Did ya’ll on BBV think Williams/Grant were faking or were they actually hurt?

Hence to fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence lies in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting.

coming from a guy who hasnt missed a giants game in about a decade

im gonna predict that leon washington has a HUGE day against us. Historically we cannot cover little speedy runningbacks who sneak out of the backfield consistently on pass plays. brian westbrook wrote the book on how to dominate a giants over aggressive defense, especially with guys like osi who are flying up field all the time. I look for a few big gains from Leon on the draw or delay as well. Also, I predict a high return average from him.

by The Blood of Eli on Oct 7, 2011 6:48 AM PDT reply actions

The returns, maybe. But sadly, Leon is only getting maybe 2 rushes per game

Which is an absolute travesty. I hope he gets more touches on Sunday, but if I were the Giants I wouldn’t be too concerned.

Giant LB'z SUCK!!? Mark Herzlich, Greg Jones,Williams,Paysinger...Maybe not..

Yeah, but Westbrook was part of the Eagles gameplan

Leon is part of package 13, subgroup 4 in Bevell’s playbook. He calls that section “kitchen sink”.

Westbrook

was exploiting Antonio Pierce.

Yes, I think we’re vulnerable with LBzez in pass coverage, but Greg Jones is speedier than AP, and Boley and Jaq can fly around a bit. I don’t think the matchup you refer to is generalizable.
