5'10 Lardarius Webb against 6'5 BMW. This play was discussed in one of the post game comment threads. What do you think, was BMW outmuscled?

No

I think Tarvaris needs to throw it a little higher.

I don't know

How is Webb supposed to defend a pass against a guy that’s 7 inches taller and 50+lbs bigger than him without any positional advantage?

See video above

If you’re standing right next to a guy, it’s not that hard to swat the ball away. It was a great play by Webb.

Thanks for posting this

I don’t think it’s clear evidence that BMW was “out-muscled” but it does look like a “jump ball” situation that BMW should have been able to out-muscle Webb. Webb doesn’t really have any advantage in position or size to prevent the play, he just seems to put more effort into it than BMW.

Immediately after the play, BMW appeared to appeal to the ref for a PI. In the re-play you can see that BMW’s right arm (our left) is not extended because it is being held down by Webb. Webb is being physical with the much-bigger BMW and BMW doesn’t appear to be able to respond with greater physicality.

There may be a case to be made that it is easier to disrupt a pass than to make a catch, but I think this is one example of BMW not using his size to his advantage and one reason why he isn’t getting as many targets this year.

I have a hard time calling it a jump ball with how far in front of BMW the ball is when they fight over it.

And if you watch the replay portion it looks like Webb’s left hand is inside Williams’ shoulder pad, I think that’s why he wants a flag. But I know what you mean, this is an opportunity for BMW to use his size to screen out a much smaller corner and he’s not able to do it. I don’t fault him too much on this play, on the whole I think it was a really good job by the defender, but it does make you realize how dependent BMW is on his quarterback.

I would say out efforted (It's a word...dont look it up)

This isn’t a jump ball by any means, and it’s put in a position where both men had equal opportunity to make a play. Yes the QB could have thrown it better, but it’s still a good enough pass, and in the NFL a play Williams should make every time (with some exceptions and anomolies). Webb played hard and aggressively, and pushed himself to make a play, where as it seemed Williams was content on letting the ball reach him, and whatever happens inbetween, happens. In other words… he didn’t follow through the play with as much efford and put in the work to shield the defender, get his arms and hands out infront, and make an aggressive play on the ball to make a catch. He looked lazy where as Webb showed some fire.

This is a consistent trend with Williams… and as much as he rebounded last year, play like this is pretty concerning to me. Especially from someone so big, strong and with so much talent. He’s grown up a lot and put in a lot more of himself into his career and football, hence why he’s actually on a roster….but he’s still coming up short. I would have Williams on a short leash if I were the coach. Other WR’s on this roster less talented have shown up moreso than him, and shown they want to play and fight to win. Obo and Baldy being those two.

If you have to ask, you can't efford it.

This is really funny to.me.

My dad use to say “effret” all the time instead of effort.

Lack of consistency is a lack of effort and concentration

This has always been BMWs shortfall, and the reason why a coach with Carroll’s philosophy of win forever and earn everything should cut or trade the player – regardless of potential. See Aaron Curry.

It's true that the ball was put in a position where both guys could get it

Which is actually not a great place to put the ball, since all the defender has to do is get a single hand on the ball. Webb made a good play, Williams didn’t use his size effectively enough, but considering Webb was already on that side of Williams, if the throw is on Williams’ other shoulder I think he makes that catch without a problem.

Williams gets paid to make that catch - to use his physical size to screen out Webb

If he won’t do that, why does he get paid?

The fry chef at McDonalds gets paid to cook fries and put them in a box for the customer. If all the fry chef did was watch the fries cook, but never put them in a box he’d be fired.

Why is everyone going so easy on BMW? He is not doing what he is supposed to do! ARRRGGGHHH!

People aren't excited about running out a guy who was pretty useful last year.

He’s been a pretty big disappointment this year but cutting him would be pretty wasteful.

by Nate Dogg on Nov 18, 2011 3:00 PM PST up reply actions

Cutting him would be an incredible overreaction

It seems like it’s an issue of motivation. With the addition of Rice and Miller, and the rise of Baldwin he’s a lot lower on the totem pole. I wonder if it’s disappointment in being the #4 receiver (and the lack of expectations to be “the Man”) that’s leading to the decline in his play.

Once we get a more accurate QB

We’ll be glad we kept him. He compliments Rice very well, just lacks his ability to get separation but makes up for it with great hands and body control.
