Seahawks All-Time, All-Drafted Team

A while back on my other blog, I compiled a Seahawks All-Time team composed only of players drafted by the Seattle organization. Given the real possibility that NOTHING is going to happen in this offseason until the draft in late April, I thought it might be neat to revisit this topic. First, the rules:

A) players must have been drafted by the Seahawks (no undrafted players like Mack Strong, Dave Krieg, or David Hawthorne)
B) players must have made a significant contribution with Seattle (so no Ahman Greens, for example)

Here's my squad:

OFFENSE

QB Seneca Wallace (4th, 2003)
RB Shaun Alexander (1st, 2000)
FB John L. Williams (1st, 1986)
WR Brian Blades (2nd, 1988)
WR Darrell Jackson (3rd, 2000)
TE John Carlson (2nd, 2008)

T Walter Jones (1st, 1997)
T Ron Mattes (7th, 1985)
G Steve Hutchinson (1st, 2001)
G Pete Kendall (1st, 1996)
C Kevin Mawae (2nd, 1994)

DEFENSE

DE Jacob Green (1st, 1980)
DE Michael Sinclair (6th, 1991)
DT Cortez Kennedy (1st, 1990)
DT Brandon Mebane (3rd, 2007)
LB Lofa Tatupu (2nd, 2005)
LB Fredd Young (3rd, 1984)
LB Bruce Scholtz (2nd, 1982)
S Kenny Easley (1st, 1981)
S John Harris (7th, 1978)
CB Marcus Trufant (1st, 2003)
CB Shawn Springs (1st, 1997)

SPECIAL TEAMS

K Josh Brown (7th, 2003)
P Ruben Rodriguez (5th, 1987)
KR Bobby Joe Edmonds (5th, 1986)

What do you think, sirs?

Yup

Here’s my top 5 Seahawks QBs:

1. Hasselbeck
2. Krieg
3. Zorn
4. Moon
5. Kitna

None of those guys were acquired by Seattle in the NFL draft.

Kitna?

Wow…

Mariners, Senators, Trail Blazers, Seahawks fan that also covers the Ottawa Senators prospects for Silver Seven. All from Sunrise, FL. And I do for you guys! Silver Seven

Good thing there are no tear stains on the internet.

look at it this way

maybe we are due to draft a great QB! :)

by Johnny Peel (DKSB) on Feb 11, 2011 7:05 PM PST up reply actions

I like this idea!

Now I’ve got to go to work on this. At first glance it might be very hard to upgrade from the squad you listed.

Maybe Joey Galloway before Blades

maybe…..

by Lo Pann on Feb 11, 2011 6:06 PM PST reply actions

Galloway was more explosive

and scored more TDs than Blades (37 to 34), but I gave Blades the edge for longevity in Seattle (10 years to 4) and consistency… Blades is also 2nd in team history in catches and yards receiving.

by Johnny Peel (DKSB) on Feb 11, 2011 6:13 PM PST up reply actions

i was thinking along the same lines

But I would have Joey Goaway replace D-jak instead.

by brugg on Feb 11, 2011 6:17 PM PST up reply actions

I prefer D-Jack

over Galloway- better numbers, bigger impact on better Seahawks teams- Although who knows what Galloway does over a longer Seattle career if he hadn’t forced his way out of town after 1999 season?

by Johnny Peel (DKSB) on Feb 11, 2011 6:19 PM PST up reply actions

You could cheat

Put Galloway as KR instead of Bobby Joe. Then they’re both on the list.

by SmartAssCoug on Feb 12, 2011 10:25 AM PST up reply actions

And I miiiight put Spencer before Mawae.

Spencer really has turned into an above-average center now.

by Coach Owens on Feb 11, 2011 6:19 PM PST reply actions

That's totally reasonable

You could easily slide Spencer in that slot.

by Johnny Peel (DKSB) on Feb 11, 2011 6:20 PM PST up reply actions

good idea

On first thought there’s nothin I’d change although it is disconcerting seeing Seneca atop any Seahawks All-time list. I’m gonna have to dive into the memory banks and peruse some hawks draft history and see if I can challenge any of your selections.

I know you’ve got your own blog to take care of but with John gone it’d be cool to see you drop some more of your content on us over here.

by CMoney87 on Feb 11, 2011 6:20 PM PST via mobile reply actions

I'll try to post more over here

if there is a demand- but I also don’t want to use up too much stuff that could end up on my home blog either.

I’ll be around (and big ups to John for letting me post here in the first place- He certainly gave me a LOT more exposure, and I’m very grateful to him for that).

by Johnny Peel (DKSB) on Feb 11, 2011 6:23 PM PST up reply actions

Rick Mirer

As much as we would like to forget him, has better numbers than Seneca

by Christian Bussey on Feb 11, 2011 6:23 PM PST reply actions

Fair point

Mirer had a promising rookie year before imploding (cautionary tale for Sam Bradford?), and started 51 games to Wallace’s 14. However, Wallace had better numbers in almost every respect (albeit with a smaller sample).

by Johnny Peel (DKSB) on Feb 11, 2011 6:27 PM PST up reply actions

seconded

Mirer was the better qb. Seneca the better receiver. Mirer just is hauling around franchise qb expectations. Anybody remember the awefulness that was the hawks offense that led to his drafting? Put Seneca on that team and you’ve got yourself another top 5 pick coming.

by brugg on Feb 11, 2011 7:45 PM PST up reply actions

That's kinda depressing.

Is that the light at the end of the tunnel, or the headlights of an oncoming train?

by Benne on Feb 11, 2011 9:39 PM PST up reply actions

How about the "Not So All Time, All Drafted 'Hawks Team"

Rick Mirer for QB
Brian Bosworth for MLB
Marcus Tubbs for DT

….

I know I’m missing a ton of busts!

by PoolNinja on Feb 11, 2011 6:26 PM PST reply actions

Busts

Just because Mirer was a first round bust doesn’t mean….sadly that he wasn’t the best qb the hawks ever drafted

by Christian Bussey on Feb 11, 2011 6:27 PM PST up reply actions

Never said he wasn't a bust

Just said that despite that he was the best qb we ever drafted

by Christian Bussey on Feb 11, 2011 6:31 PM PST up reply actions

as Lo Pann pointed out, Dan McGwire could take the cake…

Curry will probably never live up to his draft pick

but I still think the guy can have a solid NFL career- Dunno if I’d call him a “bust” on the level of, say, Bosworth, etc.

#4 pick of 2009

We could of had Clay Matthews…

by PoolNinja on Feb 11, 2011 6:41 PM PST up reply actions

Yup

Entire league passed on Tom Brady, what? 6 times? On Joe Montana 3 times? The draft is to a great degree a crapshoot.

by Johnny Peel (DKSB) on Feb 11, 2011 6:45 PM PST up reply actions

I apologize...

I was merely pointing out that Clay went towards bottom half of 1st round while AC was supposedly the “BEST” prospect as a LB to come out in ten years, so Charlie Casserly says…

Curry wasn't regarded as the "best" LB in the draft, merely the "safest".

As in, he had the least amount of questions. That’s what I read anyways. Besides, two years is to early to say whether somebody is definitely a bust or not.

by Coach Owens on Feb 11, 2011 7:00 PM PST up reply actions

Really?

I remember him being regarded as the best linebacker and a few regarded him as the best player available.

by bigtrain21 on Feb 11, 2011 7:16 PM PST up reply actions

As a prospect

he was better than Patrick Willis and we all saw his affect there was no way we couldn’t. Although I was semi hoping for Crabtree.

by alexander_37 on Feb 11, 2011 8:07 PM PST up reply actions

I don't see Boz as a bust...

injury was the greater factor, and I generally give a pass to injury issue guys.

But he did produce for a few years with us. Just couldn’t keep out of trouble.

by MT Olson on Feb 12, 2011 12:04 PM PST up reply actions

All-time bust?

Owen Gill, RB. 2nd round pick in 1985, 1st Seattle pick of that draft- Got CUT that year, never played for Seattle. Was OOF by the end of the 1987 season.

by Johnny Peel (DKSB) on Feb 11, 2011 6:31 PM PST reply actions

I bow to you, sir

I’ve never even heard of that name, definitely bust worthy.

by PoolNinja on Feb 11, 2011 6:33 PM PST up reply actions

Wow.

Now that is a bust. Any more info on him as to why we gave up on him so quickly and what caused us to be so high on him on draft day?

Here are his college stats.

by bigtrain21 on Feb 11, 2011 6:53 PM PST up reply actions

I was 10 at the time, but I recall that

the motivation for the pick was concern about Curt Warner bouncing back from his ACL blowout in ‘84. I’ll admit I don’t really remember how he turned out to be so craptacular he couldn’t even make the ’85 squad…

by Johnny Peel (DKSB) on Feb 11, 2011 6:56 PM PST up reply actions

That 1984 team

Was so fun to watch. I was 9 and I remember thinking we were screwed. It turned out we were better off almost because no one could stop Largent. That could be my 9 year old memory talking though because I haven’t gone back and looked at the stats.

by bigtrain21 on Feb 11, 2011 7:13 PM PST up reply actions

Nice

I had that poster in my room. Kenny Easley was so good that year. He had 9 interceptions in the last 6 games.

You were 9 in that writeup. I turned 10 during the season.

by bigtrain21 on Feb 11, 2011 7:24 PM PST up reply actions

What strikes me about this excercise

Is how many first and second round picks populate it. Despite the risk of draft busts we’ve really made hay with our top picks. Goes to show you why so many teams value those picks so highly.

by ColumbiaRob on Feb 11, 2011 7:06 PM PST reply actions

Very true

and hopefully a few years down the road we’ll see a lot of Pete Carroll picks on an updated version of this list…

by Johnny Peel (DKSB) on Feb 11, 2011 7:07 PM PST up reply actions

Cheers to that

I don’t think it will take long for Earl Thomas to replace John Harris and for Okung to replace Mattes.

Good but...

Christian Fauria over John Carlson.

Joey Galloway over Darrell Jackson (though God bless Darrell Jackson).

Fun list… Thanks!

As much as I hate him now,

Sean Locklear was actually pretty serviceable during the Holmgren years.

by bfl001 on Feb 11, 2011 10:22 PM PST reply actions

Maybe it's just the 80's kid in me but

as Curt Warner was my very first “favorite Seahawk” I’d probably put him over Alexander. I don’t knock Shaun as much as some have for his running style, but Warner was a more complete back. It’s a shame we never got to see enough of him healthy.

by SmartAssCoug on Feb 11, 2011 11:16 PM PST reply actions   1 recs

I nitpicked at this list for a bit...

And the only things I could think of were 1. Sam Adams perhaps over ME! BANE! although Meeb could certainly pass him soon, and 2. Galloway over Jackson, simply because I feel Galloway was better although Jackson did it longer. Also, if Carlson immediately flames out (don’t think he will), does that make Carlester Crumpler or Itulu Mili the best TE we’ve ever drafted?

by mkries on Feb 12, 2011 2:34 AM PST reply actions

Oh, and those nitpicking points were all based on 2:30 am drunken mid-90's nostalgia,

so yeah, good list. I can see ET, Okung, and Jake Locker (!) all being on this list soon. In my wet dreams.

by mkries on Feb 12, 2011 2:37 AM PST up reply actions

Great article

I would definitely put Curt Warner over SA at running back. He was one of the few RBs who really didn’t need an OL to do what he did. You can’t say that about SA.
Eugene Robinson at S.
Maybe Dave Brown over Springs at CB.

by stufr on Feb 12, 2011 5:03 AM PST reply actions

I'm glad i'm not the only one who feels this way

Warner in his short prime could run over, around or past a guy, plus he was a pretty good receiver for a RB. He could catch more than just the screen or outlet pass.

by SmartAssCoug on Feb 12, 2011 10:27 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah

Alexander was only MVP.

by purplepansy on Feb 12, 2011 10:55 AM PST up reply actions

Yes he was and he was good

But he also had one of the best OLs in the NFL. The early 80s OLs were not anywhere near as good. Curt Warner was like Barry Sander’s before there was a Barry Sander’s in the league. The guy could do it all by himself.

We could have had most of that OL at the same time if our FO hadn't been trying to move us to LA

We would have been the most just fightening up front in the early 2000s. You think Walt and Hutch were good next to eachother, imagine if they were next to Mawae with Kendell at RG. It would have been unstopable.

by stufr on Feb 12, 2011 5:05 AM PST reply actions

Think about losing RT McIntosh to injury as well...

Could have been unbelievable.
