Brandon Mebane may be tough to keep
Not a surprise. I don't expect him to get franchised. Thanks to Haynesworth, or I guess Snyder, tagging a DT is a lot more expensive this year.

Mebane
Is one of only a handful of players that if released I would still follow their careers. I hope we try as hard as possible to keep him

$8 million for one year of a 26 year old DT seems totally worth it to me.
That gives them time to decide what to do with him. They could then trade him, or sign him to a longer deal. Players like Mebane are in high demand.
I think it's a little high.
Not saying I wouldn’t, but he has not earned that kind of salary yet.
But the thing is, I don’t know where Rossenthal is getting the $8m estimate.
La Canfora and Brian McIntyre both have been projecting that the tag for DT will jump to over $12m due to the Haynesworth deal.
What do we have, a couple more days til we apply the tag? I bet we don’t. For $12m I absolutely would not.
If that happens, I would be surprised if he doesn’t want to test the market. The market for him could be very, very rich. We likely will offer him something good, but given the market he likely could get a lot more somewhere else. My bet is we lose him.

We would have to make some big acquisition to replace him.
I don’t want a frontline of Clemons-Random draft pick or free agent pickup-Cole/other obscure run stuffer-Bryant. If Clemons even sticks around. Soooo many questions about this roster, holy cow…
Go Pack?
It might be best for everyone if he leaves.
He was our best lineman last year, yet made the least impact. He made a lot of impact. He made the defense better, and not by a little. Evident by his absence when opponents pulled linemen and could do other things without having to account for him more.
He wins his battles like a 3-tech, consistently, but not quickly enough and has little closing speed. It makes for anemic pass rush. He does much better against the run but the value of that is limited. He’s the under tackle on a line with two other 2-gappers.
He really would be best as the nose on a more traditional 4-3 with a passing-led offense. Here, he doesn’t produce pressure at the nose of the pocket quickly enough. He’s a minor misfit for the position.
If he went to New York? He could make more impact than Justin Tuck. Anchor a good run defense and foster a terrifying pass rush by collapsing the pocket. He’d probably make all-pro.
What we need from the under tackle is a penetrator with closing speed. The guy can’t be a liability against the run but good lord, we have over 650 pounds and 4 gaps covered by the other guys, without even counting the Leo. Get a pass rushing, knifing, pocket collapsing under tackle and it could transform our defense. Despite Mebane being such a good player.

Feel free to call me an idiot, but I don't see a situation where Mebane isn't franchised or signed long term by the Seahawks.
Now, after he gets franchised I will admit there’s a very real opportunity for him to be traded. A lot of teams would be willing to pay a 26 year old DT 8 million dollars in 2011, I just hope we’re one of them.
Re-sign to a reasonably modest deal.
Quality DTs are hard to come by. If can’t re-sign Tag him. I mean, who else could be Tagged we’d rather keep? Spencer? Perhaps.
Hasseldone.
It's either Mebane or Mare.
And actually it’s more likely either Mare or nobody. And it’s probably Mare.

Conflicting numbers between here and La Canfora's link on the front page.
$8 mil? Franchise for sure. $12 mil? Toss-up.
