Drew Bledsoe is the first real Big name Smith coached, during his coaching which came in the middle of Bledsoe’s career we see a worse comp% although only by .04 of a percent, however 7% more yards passing, 15% more td’s, but also almost 3% MORE int’s. The measurably Net Carl Smith effect appears to be a slight increase in cmp% to the tune of 2%, yards are about even so no effect there, 4% less td’s, and 13% less ints. Also of note are the following names that Carl Smith coached, and amusingly enough are all first round busts, but not enough data to analyze, before/after to analyze. Tim Couch(Cle), Bryon Leftwich(Jac), Brady Quinn(Cle), and Matt Lienart(whom he coached at USC) On the whole not a very impressive resume, and if Carroll hires this yahoo again I’ll scream
AHHHHHHH!!!

You really hate Carl Smith huh?
by purplepansy on Feb 25, 2011 11:31 AM PST up reply actions
Why wouldn't you
Looking at Carl Smith’s career and the 1st round qb busts he has been responsible for coaching, how can you not hate him as a hire….specially when Zorn was available before he went to chiefs.

In all sincerity though, This guy's been in NFL football for 23 years.
I have to believe there’s a reason for that.

can't carve The Statue of David out of a pile of horse crap
he can only be as successfull as the talent he has to work with

Talent

Maybe
Maybe they would have busted with a different coach but they busted with him as a coach, and too me where there is smoke, fire baby

Correlation != causation.
What else was at play with these quarterbacks? Scheme? Lack of surrounding talent? You cannot attribute the entirety of their failures to Carl Smith.
And frankly, I think you're vastly overstating the importance of a QB coach.
If I had to wager a guess, I would say Carl Smith is not the reason those QBs flamed out.

And if we somehow turn out to be wrong, and it's proven,
we will then go and re-name “the opposite of the Solomon Touch” as “the Carl Smith Touch.” But til then….

Well not that I want to be right
If I’m wrong, and carl smith is a good coach, then I’ll eat my words, and I’ll be happy because he’ll help shape our QB of the future. Please please please let me be wrong

Colt McCoy and Bady Quinn have both been succe....
wait a minute….
McCoy has been decent.
Quinn not so much, not that he has done absolutely anything outside of Cleveland either.
Jim Zorn
Why did Zorn have to take the Chiefs offer?
by luciuswolfey_96 on Feb 25, 2011 6:14 PM PST reply actions
Yeah I'm not interested in the return of Zorn
Just because he was here before.
If I wanted that I also want Holmgren and Haskell back.
Fire Gus "What's a screen?" Bradley.
Might as well bring back John Marshall, Ray Rhodes, and Tim Ruskell why don't you?!
I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul - Invictus
Oh my oh dear
I would love it if Dear Mr. Rhodes would come back…
why do we care about a QB coach right now...
“Charlie try to hit the receiver in stride, you’ve got all the tools, read the defense, look off the safety and drop it right on Ben’s numbers…” or “that was a great throw! now do that every time and both of us will keep our jobs.” “Matt, on this drive don’t throw the ball to the other team in the redzone, instead of going to Butler on the corner route with a 6”0 corner on him with a 45 inch vert go to BMW he’ll probably outsize his man" What exactly does a QB coach do that isn’t obvious. I mean you can go over issues with mechanics and reads you’ve seen in the past and try to improve them but its on the QB’s shoulders to be smart on the field and recognize coverage etc. QB is a position I feel your born to do, not sure you can coach someone into being a great QB, they already are and you just guide them towards being a more refined starting QB.

I think one of their main jobs is to help out in the film room
Though I could be mistaken. Pretty sure they help break down a LOT of game tape.

What does a QB Coach do?
Here are the main bits
quarterback footwork and vision drills, pass drops and the release of the football, sliding, in other words everything the quarterback does, from receiving the ball from the center to dropping back, to sitting in the pocket, to scrambling when the pocket breaks down, to hand offs, and play actions, going through your reads, not locking onto your first option. All those things and more are taught by the Quarterback Coach the Teacher of your Quarterback. So Turkey Lurkeys I’d say it’s very important indeed, and not a position to belittle or downplay. Maybe with a veteran such as Matt Hasselbeck it doesn’t make much of a difference cause well how much can he really learn. But when you talk about developing a QB, then you better have a damn good teacher, because the jump from college to the NFL is huge and with the flops Smith was responsible for teaching sorry I’m not jumping on the Smith bandwagon. But this is the wrong hire.
by Christian Bussey on Feb 26, 2011 10:20 PM PST up reply actions
Yes, but
how are you supposed to quantify that? To be able to accurately evaluate a QB coach, you’d have to compare what the QBs under their charge did to what they would have done under a replacement-level QB coach — and we just don’t have that information. In the absence of that sort of statistical baseline, throwing numbers at the question doesn’t really mean much.
by The Ancient Mariner on Feb 27, 2011 4:59 PM PST up reply actions
your right there is value in a QB coach however i think the QB themselves is the key...
The impact of the lessons comes with the willingness to learn and get better and build from the talent already possessed. I would have liked Zorn better than smith though just seems like a cooler guy to have in the locker room.
