Report: Sidney Rice to get the Transition Tag
Two NFL agents tell the St. Paul Pioneer Press that impending free agent Sidney Rice will be transition tagged later this month. The franchise tag is expected to go to SLB Chad Greenway. The transition tag, which for receivers cost $8.65M last year, would take Rice off the market unless another team proposed him a multi-year offer sheet. It would pay Rice the average of the top ten wide receiver salaries in the NFL. Still just 24, Rice could re-prove his health for a year before the Vikings lock him up. Ha ha!
Are you thinking what I’m thinking?
I started thinking it the second I read your headline.
I hope there are enough people left over in the FO to convince Carroll and Schneider that the Hutch poison pill was not just an affront the old FO, but to Paul Allen and to the entire 12th man.
But that being said, I’m still kind of hoping that the new CBA closes the Poison Pill loophole so that the transitional tag will become viable the way it was originally intended.
FUCK THAT.
I want to get something out of the motherfucker first.
Either that, or the NFL give us a free 1st round pick as a “sorry, we fucked up, and your franchise paid the price.”

I know Sidney Rice has the elite size,
but what kind of reciever is he overall? Is he a true deep threat?
Yes. Very much a potentially elite deep threat WR who can go up and get the ball.

Plus he is only 24
If we lock him up in a 5-6 year contract we would have him and BWM for the forseable future. Thats a big tall and probably unstopable WR corps. Throw in some Butler and Tate for flash and we would have something.
Sydney Rice is a beast!!!
We have good receivers but we don’t have a Sydney Rice.

The "we can't know jack shit when it comes to football" epistemology has tired me out so, so much,
but that doesn’t mean it’s invalid. So, I wish I didn’t have to wonder, wish I didn’t have to ask this question….
Do we know that Sidney Rice is any good? Was it Favre that made him one of the top wideouts in the game? He’s yet to prove he’s more than a one-year wonder, right?

c'mon bro last year Brett could barely get a pass off...
Watch some footage of Sydney Rice and tell me he’s not good. Although he had Farve throwing nice to him for a year a lot of the catches he made were insane and caught because of his own talent.

I'm not saying he's not good, just asking if he is on his own accord.
He didn’t show much until 2009 when he had a monster year. But now that I’ve looked, on the surface it looks like indications were all along that he had this kind of potential. Possibly 2008 would have been decent, too, were it not for an injury.

He was a highly productive college player drafted in the second round and has all the physical tools.
He’d be a bit of a gamble but theres definitely reason to think 2009 wasn’t a fluke.
Now that I've looked closer, his biggest risk may be injury.
But you’re right, he had more potential and demonstrated more promise before 2009 than I realized. Probably not a fluke.

Yeah, a couple knee injuries and hip surgery that kept him out most of this year.
The knee injuries were before his big 2009 though.
He's relentless going for balls and does take big hits sometimes...
But he is big and fast and seems like he is good a playing through pain. We do have nice WR’s already but none of em’ are them have much height other than my man BMW who is awesome but not fast. A guy like Rice poses match up problems for you have to watch for his double move ability and he is fatal running the deep post and fade. If the Vikes wanna let em go, why not snatch em’. Looking at his mobility when he came back he still looked crazy good. Once again thats just how i see it I can totally accept the other side of the argument though.

I think we should totally fuck over the Vikings and try to sign him
but the NFLPA contends that the tags don’t hold any power:

Hard to know for certain how that will wind up.
I think there’s credence to the union’s case, but I would imagine the legalese would allow teams to use it with the CBA not yet expired. The fact that the tags would be used for the 2011 season which is not within the timeframe of the CBA is logical, but I don’t see how that could hold legal water unless language explicitly states that the tags cannot be used for seasons following the CBA.
CBA is not expired yet and this is the time when teams apply the tag. The union previously agreed and I expect they can’t really stop it.

Hmm...do we really need another WR with BMW, Obo, Tate, Deon?

The only person that challenges Rice in any way in BMW.
It’s not “Do we need another?”, it’s “Can we improve?”.
I think we can improve other areas of our team that is not considered WR.
Save up some money for a guard or two.

Its probably not an either/or situation
We’ve got one of the lower 2011 payrolls in the league.

Its not that Tate, Obo, and Deon aren't good...
Like Nate said its “Can we improve”. Those three guys are good short to mid yardage receivers but Rice gives you a consistent deep threat and has hight to go up for jump balls. BMW is successful due to his hight and strength and the size of target he is as a whole, but he isn’t fast. Rice although not as amazing as Fitzgerald is cut from that cloth and can outmuscle even big corners for the ball all over the field. We won’t struggle at that position without a Sydney Rice but our offense would be better with him and I think thats undeniable. Your absolutely right about the O-line though that should be priority but I think Cable can sort that out and we should invest in at least one big play guy on offense this off season to take some pressure off BMW and free up our slot receivers and TE’s.
