Should Hawks sign Erik Coleman?
I saw yesterday that safety Erik Coleman was released by the Atlanta Falcons. As I have written previously, I think Lawyer Milloy is past it. I love Milloy, have held him in high regard ever since he was at the University of Washington, but I don't think he is a safety in the NFL anymore. What about Kam Chancellor? Coleman will be 29 this year, Chancellor 23, Milloy 38. Can Chancellor be a starting strong safety in the NFL?
The Hawks signed Milloy after his stint with the Falcons ended, should they look to Coleman as a possible replacement for Milloy? What does everyone think?

I would rather not
Sign Coleman, and about milloy yeah it is true he’s winding down and at the end of his career he started the season fast, and by the end you could see he was feeling the effects. Milloy is a good guy and was a really good safety at one time, but I say let chancellor play he is one player I’ve been extremely interested in since we drafted him, he’s got really good size , he can lay the wood, his speed isn’t horrible, and he’s had all year to learn from milloy and prepare himself. It would be much smoothed transition from milloy if chancellor were the replacement, I think the kid would be a monster around the line of scrimmage, leaving Earl Thomas to play center field, and I doubt he would be a huge liability in coverage.

When I think about whether or not we should start Kam,
what are the issues most people have with him? I would say being assignment correct and maybe taking good angles. Milloy, who may be good but is likely average at those things, doesn’t have the speed and agility execute well enough. As Kam is now, I think it’s a wash between the two and Kam will only get better while Milloy will only get worse. I wouldn’t be opposed to bringing in a younger veteran if Chance isn’t ready yet. I just don’t want us to necessarily spend big at SS.
Go Pack?
I think Chance will be ready now.
We have a good young and hungry SS in Chance and I think him and Earl can be solid together back there. He is a beast around the line of scrimmage as Matt509 stated and in essence a faster younger and bit larger version of Milloy who i’m thinking has taught him some great things. Chancellor has that “something”, yeah he’s a bit big and not the fastest but he is a special and unique safety kind of like how E.T. is an undersized little monster of a safety cam is an oversized monster of a safety.

But we've only seen a handful of good plays from him.
What makes you so sure he’s ready? Just his draft profile and pre-season talk? I’m not disagreeing, just looking for insight.
Go Pack?
he has only had a handful of chances...
I feel he is ready due to what he has done with the time he had to be on the field, coming up and making tackles at the line and although not the fastest being in relatively good position to stop big plays + he hustles real hard all the time, he was taught by one of the best ever in Lawyer Milloy. I have no proof Cheddar I just have that feeling about his game and feel he is imposing back there, A guy that can bring down a Greg Olsen and also fast enough to keep a Greg Olsen from making the catch in the first place.

no pun on the chances.

Hmm
I just don’t think there’s a need to bring in a vet . Because good teams develop their own draft picks, it gets pretty annoying when the seahawks give up on our picks way too early, Lawrence Jackson, and e.j Wilson come to mind, I mean I don’t see why either couldent stick around. E.j Wilson may never have developed into anything but we will never know because we just released him, same with Jackson wheb I watched him years past he showed glimpses of being real good but we traded him. I guess what I’m saying is that we shouldent aquire other teams garbage we should develop our own talent.

He seems like a potentiall good fit.
The Hawks aren’t going to want to depend on Kam to be ready to go in his second year and Coleman isn’t likely to demand too much money or playing time. They need depth at the position, Coleman is starter quality if needed and would provide competition with Kam.
I like the competition aspect he would provide however...
why not instill some confidence in the guys you draft by letting em play football ie. Morrah, Kam, Thurmond III. Coleman is solid but lets build a competitive young team that learns how to be effective together even if they give up a TD or drop a pass or two now and then…or are you more saying from a depth perspective we need another SS?

Coleman is only 28.
He’s not an old guy, though SS is (like MLB) a position that ages a guy pretty quickly, because of the punishment it entails. However, Coleman was pretty popular over at Falcoholic, and they describe his as a great leader, beastly against the run, and not a completely liability in coverage. Seems to fit the bill pretty well. Decent stopgap option until we know for sure that Kam is the SSotF.

How can you say Milloy was past it this year.
He had one of the best years in his career. We need to find a replacement but I think we can do better than Coleman
How long is Milloy's contract?
We need to see how well Chance developed. I doubt two two year safeties will know the complexities of our defense and understand how to adjust on the fly as qb’s change up the offensive packages.
