My first reaction with this pick is that it's a bit underwhelming considering who is still on the board. Jimmy Smith, Da'Quan Bowers, Mark Ingram, etc etc etc. After I took a deep breath I have to say I am not that disappointed. The Hawks have said all along that getting better on the lines is priority number one. James Carpenter was slowly creeping into the first round discussion lately and would have undoubtedly been taken early in the second round if the Hawks had passed on him.
He's a great athlete for his size - he's 6'5 300 and his versatility could be why the Hawks love him so much. He's a probably right tackle but could bump in to the guard position and that could very well be where they want him. He's extremely tough and durable and he never missed a start in his college career. He's good on the run, and can get into the 2nd level effectively. He's got a lot of experience in a pro-style offense and don't forget that he was one of the lead blockers for Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram.
Overall, after the shock has worn off, I'm not sad about it. I think the line just got a LOT better and that's something we all have wanted. What do you guys think?
