I hope we trade every pick we have left for greater picks in the future.

No one strikes me as being great, and I would like to be like the Patriots, who view draft picks as working capital. Time value of money baby. There are two type of people in this world- those who pay interest, and those who receive it.

Based on the tape I've seen of Mallett, he's the best QB physically by FAR.

He must either be a real dumbass, a total jerk, a meth addict or some combination of these. I can’t believe that teams would pass on him because of some nasty articles. Because no team has stepped up and taken him, I have a hard time believing there isn’t some serious baggage (beyond "he cusses on his Facebook page and listens to Eminem).

it’s pretty easy. Watch the thread, wait for the general commentariot to start commenting on a player, and then chime in with an opinion.

Even better, you’ll have had time to concoct an actual reaction and detail as opposed to a 5 word sentence that bespeaks of the “Me FIRST I HAVE IT FIRST” mentality of posting spoilers.

In Q/PM's world

Drafting a project QB and then forcing him into a badly set offense gives you a high chance of a bust. There are only project QBs in this year’s draft.

Instead, they build up an offense in a year when that’s the best option available (Oline), and next year or later pick up a QB who can be more readily plugged in

It makes perfect sense, just not for this year.

by Thomas Beekers on Apr 29, 2011 6:25 PM PDT up reply actions   2 recs

Its not as bad as you say

We need more depth, but the starters are good, as a whole, when healthy.

by stufr on Apr 29, 2011 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions

When they like whoever is available with the picks

We have an enormous amount of holes. Did you expect them to fix it all in one draft? Don’t get me wrong, both of these picks make me go “yes, need filled” only to then think “awww but we have so many needs left”. But that was inevitable

by Thomas Beekers on Apr 29, 2011 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions

I expected them to prioritize their needs a little better.

Gritty, run first guards in the third in combination with a run first RT in the first seems like a pretty negligent use of the resources they have.

We shall win the war in the trenches, boys!!!

by Tyler Jorgensen on Apr 29, 2011 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Taking these kinds of guys in the mid rounds isn't patchwork guess work.

I know you think having a dominant right tackle is worth a first round pick, and maybe it can add that can’t of value to your team, but that does not mean thats where you should draft them. Kickers can also be highly valuable, we all remember Josh Brown’s contributions to the team, but you don’t draft them high because you can generally find the similar value for a fraction of the cost. I’m not against building a strong offensive line, I’m against spending like a fool to do it.

Our QB situation is a reflection of our lack of a strong OL

I’d love for you to expand on that because boy does that sound like the exact opposite of what you’ve been saying for a long time.

by Nate Dogg on Apr 29, 2011 6:49 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

Don't get me wrong.

Our QB situation has been bad, but so has our line play. We didn’t get a chance to fix one, at least we can fix the other in a single year. I’ll take that.

I’m not blaming Hasselbeck’s lack of performance on solely him or the talent surrounding him. They go hand in hand, and I’ve said that all along. I think, in the right situation, he could still be “okay” for a couple more years. By okay I mean barely tolerable.

I don’t believe that is with us. We need a strong armed play action guy, to fit with our newly found smashmouth style and the need to stretch the field once teams throw 8, 9 or 10 in the box. Hass isn’t that guy.

Perhaps if we would have addressed the OL a few years ago, Hass would look better with us today, but that ship has sailed and I wish him well wherever he ends up, at least 14 games a year, and maybe 16.

We shall win the war in the trenches, boys!!!

by Tyler Jorgensen on Apr 29, 2011 7:07 PM PDT up reply actions

I honestly don't think at this point that you will ever think a road grading team of early OL non LT picks will ever be worth it.

If the team becomes stronger over a long period of time and yearly gets to address other issues because the line is set, will that improve/alter your perception, or are you stone cold adamant against it no matter if the results prove you wrong?

We shall win the war in the trenches, boys!!!

by Tyler Jorgensen on Apr 29, 2011 7:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Thats not true, I would have been fine with Carpenter, Hudson, Franklin in the second.

You’re jumping ahead again though. If the team becomes stronger over a long period of time and yearly gets to address other issues doesn’t change that they overspent to do it. They could have addressed other needs this year with their top picks and still picked guys similar to Moffitt a couple rounds later.

by Nate Dogg on Apr 29, 2011 7:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Similar to Moffitt in terms of relative assinged value

But how many will actually pan out? Most won’t. It’s easy to lump five guys together and say they’re basically the same guy, but in reality, 2 will be out of the league in a year, 2 will be backups, and 1 might just be a pro bowler. If Seattle’s confident in their scouting and think he’s the one who’s going to be the pro bowler, perhaps that’s why you take him. Instead of someone a round later who’s probably out of the league in a year. I don’t know, just a thought.

Maybe they could have gotten those guys.

I have yet to see a team build their offensive line in a single year (or two years total) out of FA signings and 4th-6th round draft picks.

And Carpenter was a late riser and I think less a surprise pick to teams than to fans and (most) pundits.

but they’re going about it in a questionable way. They’re using a lot of capital on positions that can probably be had cheaper while a position that demands the use of first round resources and can be a huge boon to the offensive line in and of itself is being neglected.

by Nate Dogg on Apr 29, 2011 7:41 PM PDT up reply actions

For example

Could we have taken Smith in the first to shore up corner, a similar tackle in the second round, and a similar guard in the fourth?

Perhaps it’s a slight decrease in line talent, but you might make up for it overall with much improved cornerback talent.

by BrianL on Apr 29, 2011 7:45 PM PDT up reply actions

I can see this argument regarding Carpenter

Especially considering the talent on the board.

I don’t see it regarding Moffitt. We could’ve taken him at 57 and no one would’ve batted an eyelid, instead we got trade value and then picked him. Straight up value pick.

by Thomas Beekers on Apr 29, 2011 7:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Have you seen some of the front 7 talent left?

Like I pointed out in another thread. Chris Carter, Sam Acho, Chris Ballard. I love where we’re sitting there in Dline. Off the top of my head, I can’t name a guard I like as much.

by Thomas Beekers on Apr 29, 2011 7:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Moffitt probably would have been gone by 99.

The best guard right now is Clint Boling who’s not athletic enough to playing in the Seahawks’ scheme. Then there’s a big drop off.

by Coach Owens on Apr 29, 2011 7:55 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree about Carpenter, I would have liked Smith at 1.25, but with his red flags it's hard to find too much fault

If he ends up suspended/in jail/out of the league for behavioral issues than the Carpenter pick looks very smart.

by Mpjohns3 on Apr 29, 2011 7:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Moffitt is the Andy Dalton of guards.

Pretty average athleticism, gritty, winner. Gets a lot of credit for the run first attitude of Wisconsin’s scheme. But thats what this FO wants. They need dirtbag road graders to clear the way for Beastmode.

by Nate Dogg on Apr 29, 2011 7:53 PM PDT up reply actions

What position are you talking about?

There were no likely QB prospects at 25. Could’ve argued for Mallett at 57, I guess, but I like trading back and getting good value.

by Thomas Beekers on Apr 29, 2011 7:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, I like Mallett a lot but he was never in the works.

It’s a good point, that guy probably wasn’t there. I don’t think quarterback is the only position more scarce than guard though. This team doesn’t have a second starting corner back and doesn’t have a 3-tech on the roster. Those are spots that require better athletes.

by Nate Dogg on Apr 29, 2011 7:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe the front office likes Tru, Thurmond, and Browner

more than we know. And thinks those 3 at corner are perfectly suitable with a depth pick late in the draft. Or we’re planning on spending big for Nhamdi once free agency opens up. It’s hard to fault the process when we don’t know all of it.

by Mpjohns3 on Apr 29, 2011 7:54 PM PDT up reply actions

We're in agreement there

But I know my manlove for Jimmy Smith is completely unrational.

by Thomas Beekers on Apr 29, 2011 7:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Not completely.

But a great offensive line can make an average QB look very good. Pretty much any quarterback in the NFL can pick apart a defense if he has all day to throw it.

by Mpjohns3 on Apr 29, 2011 7:44 PM PDT up reply actions

As a team they do very well.

They’ve poured tons of resources into their defense and took advantage of uncapped years to put together the best offensive line in football and surround the quarterback they took fifth overall (even the defense first three yards and a cloud of dust Jets knew they had to find a franchise QB) with weapons. If the Seahawks want to follow the Jets’ path they’ll need to sign Nnamdi, the Josephs, Mebane, Spencer and TO. And their defense still wouldn’t match the Jets’.

by Nate Dogg on Apr 29, 2011 8:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Coach said to look at the Jets

I was just trying to explain why, beyond the fact that they’re terrible at throwing the ball, they’re not the best example of how to build a team.

by Nate Dogg on Apr 29, 2011 8:10 PM PDT up reply actions

That doesn't make sense

By definition investing higher picks provides for a better chance at getting good players. Isn’t that the whole point of the draft?

by Thomas Beekers on Apr 29, 2011 7:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Nor is it for QBs

We’ve had a couple of UDFA QBs work out. By your logic, that means we should just gamble on being able to do that again?

I get what you’re saying, though, RT and OG are position where you can get viable starters more easily in later rounds. That doesn’t negate the value of more talent on the OLine though.

by Thomas Beekers on Apr 29, 2011 7:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Thats not my logic at all.

It’s not that it happens once in a while, it’s consistent enough to be a viable way to build an offensive line. And I’m not advocating only using UDFAs.

by Nate Dogg on Apr 29, 2011 7:59 PM PDT up reply actions

And I'm saying

That the fact that a position tends to have decent value in middle rounds doesn’t mean the draft becomes meaningless as a way to rank talent. It’s different for each position. I don’t believe in 1st-round RBs anymore, and I do believe LT, CB, QB and DE remain the premium 1st-round positions, but with enough talent almost any position can be vaulted up into the 1st (specialists aside).

by Thomas Beekers on Apr 29, 2011 8:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Fair enough.

How many years did they shuffle low tier guys in and out before they finally found the 4 6th round or later guys? Or did it take them several years to get those guys?

O-Line is good and all,

But if the team averages 3.8 YPC next year when everyone stacks the box because they don’t respect Charlie Whitehurst, Cable would probably get canned. Free Agency is going to be big for this team this offseason.

With a good O-line protecting him and a good running game, I think it will actually balance out nicely. Jesus has a strong arm and can stretch the field if he actually has enough time for our receivers to get down the field.

Heck, I think the line we had last season would have looked serviceable with a better QB

by BrianL on Apr 29, 2011 6:55 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it depend on the quality of either

If you have a great QB, he can make everyone else on that offense look better. If you don’t, a talented OL is the best way to make everyone else better. A great OL gives an average QB time and WRs open. Most good RBs are actually just average RBs behind great lines.
So BrianL is correct, but we won’t be in a position for that to matter for a few years, so build what you can fix now.

by stufr on Apr 29, 2011 6:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes

Don’t take a QB in a shitty QB class. Take OLs in a great OL class.

I don’t think its’ a good class

by Mpjohns3 on Apr 29, 2011 7:03 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't agree with that.

All college quarterbacks are projects. The polished guys are usually players like Ponder and Clausen.

by Nate Dogg on Apr 29, 2011 7:05 PM PDT up reply actions

The players this year seem much farther from starter worthy than in most years.

Almost every single one is probably 2-3 years out from just being able to handle everything the NFL will throw at them, not even taking into account if they will be good or not once they’re out there.

by Mpjohns3 on Apr 29, 2011 7:08 PM PDT up reply actions

They're not

It just seems that way because they’re getting draft so ridiculously high. Dalton in the 2nd? Kaepernick a high 2nd? Ponder and Locker at the top 1st? It’s ridiculous.

by Thomas Beekers on Apr 29, 2011 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly why I consider this a weak QB class.

Players are being drafted much much MUCH earlier than where they should be going. There is a lack of top end QB talent, yet QB needy teams, so they are being overdrafted. If these players were drafted later then being 2-3 years out from starting capable wouldn’t be an issue because it’s expected from that draft position. Where they are being drafted they should be ready to jump onto the field this season, which I just don’t see from this group.

by Mpjohns3 on Apr 29, 2011 7:14 PM PDT up reply actions

It seems like it wasn't that long ago that fans lamented having to play quarterbacks in the rookie or sophomore years.

I though the platitude was that the best way to develop a quarterback was to have him sit behind a veteran and learn for a couple years? The NFL has adapted to the high cost of first round quarterbacks by playing them early and limiting the play book.

by Nate Dogg on Apr 29, 2011 7:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I think a rookie quarterback should sit for a year unless the pieces around them are complete.

Mostly the O-line. If there is protection then I think a polished rookie can succeed. If there is no offensive line then you get a David Carr, who is pummeled into the turf so repeatedly that he loses just about any chance of a career because of being thrown into a bad situation. The QBs this year don’t just need to get used to NFL game speed though, they have major flaws in their game that need fixing before being ready behind even the most solid line.

by Mpjohns3 on Apr 29, 2011 7:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Its not the development time

Its what the odds are that they come through that development and are a quality starter

by stufr on Apr 29, 2011 7:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly.

They are being drafted way too high for 2-3 years and then questionable if they will even be able to develop into a quality NFL quarterback in that time

Walt sure.

Hutch was great, he’s got a chance at the hall, but I wonder if Seahawk fans would be so crazy about the offensive line if they’d replaced him with a guard that was even average at the time. There was enough other talent on that team that I wouldn’t be shocked if they would have still been very successful even without him.

by jwolf0 on Apr 29, 2011 6:53 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

I'm a little wary of this attitude.

It feels like the smart kid who coasted with good grades in high school by “winging it”. Then he goes to a good college, and figures he can just “wing” his next exam. The only problem is that he’s not in a high school algebra class- he’s in an advanced physics class at a high-end university.

If Pete was so good at “uncovering gems”, wouldn’t he have found at least one during his three years running the Patriot’s draft?

Look at the Pats now- they don’t “make smart picks”, they simply stockpile so many of them, that some are bound to work out.

I don’t hate the guys we drafted. I just feel that the team was unprepared and didn’t have a good idea of how the draft was going to go. I think they would have been more proactive in getting value from these picks (by drafting guys or trading for future picks).

by mkries on Apr 29, 2011 7:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I disagree on the notion that we were unprepared.

It looks to me like we had a plan, and executed it while grabbing an extra pick and moving up in the later rounds.

by eeezzbok on Apr 29, 2011 7:27 PM PDT up reply actions

I think the fact we couldn't trade down from 25 is somewhat damning.

Carpenter is a nice player, but I don’t think anyone “had a beat” on the guy. I think if the Seahawks had pegged Carpenter as their guy, they would have been much quicker to jump on a deal.

I guess what I’m saying is that I don’t trust Carroll & Schneider’s ability to uncover hidden talent over that of your average NFL team. And at this point, C&S’s opinion (along with Cable, I suppose) of these guys is all we really have to go on. We’ll have to wait and see.

All I can say- considering we took the “safe” route… these guys had better be at least average offensive linemen.

Watching 15+ hours of draft coverage turns my mind into a clusterfuck, and Fieldgulls has become the place where my brain goes to vomit the residue:)

by mkries on Apr 29, 2011 8:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Why don't you think anyone had a beat on him?

How do you know the Steelers or Packers would not have preferred him to the picks they made?

by Thomas Beekers on Apr 29, 2011 8:11 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess I don't.

And that’s always the ultimate problem I have with watching the draft- the information asymmetry. And ultimately, as I have said before- just about any player that becomes a “good” player is by default a “good” pick. Simply receiving positive affirmation from outside sources feels better, but doesn’t actually tell us anything useful.

by mkries on Apr 29, 2011 8:13 PM PDT up reply actions

That was part of the complaint he had with his first NFL experiences...

that there were too many cooks in the kitchen and his philosophy didn’t gel well with the Front Office. So that makes me think no.

Yep, I think a lot of coaches learn a thing or two during their first go at it.

by eeezzbok on Apr 29, 2011 7:35 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree with you , but that's what the strategy is starting to look like.

What’s even more amazing is the lack of skill positions they invest in while using this strategy.

But I look at Seattle not investing in a “name” QB like Mallett at the beginning of the draft, is because they don’t want to look like Carolina next year, in a Clausen situation. If they take a developmental qb like McElroy, and then a QB with a high pick next year, a lot less controversy would be involved.
