Gull Poll: Best in the West

FUCKIN EXPLOSIONS! YEAH!

I realize that this is an absurd question to ask before free agency even hits, but really, all these polls are pretty absurd, so who cares? My question today is, if you're putting money down in Nevada on who wins the NFC West, who's your hard earned cheddar going on?

Take off your fan hat and put on your degenerate gambler "Wine Em, Dine Em, Sixty-nine Em" foam dome (because that's what I picture a gambling addict in Reno wearing on his head), and make your choice. Pretend a really burly loan shark is on your case too, for fun. We'll revisit this after free agency to see if there's a big change.

Sorry Danny, but you asked this just a month or two ago.

And nothing has really changed since then. Sorry if that is being overly critical.

I’d prefer your thoughts on G. Tate’s NASCAR tweets.

Thanks for having my back, dialectic. hahaha

And I looked back to confirm your wild and libelous accusations, and the funny thing is, I didn’t already ask this question. Or at least, not that I can find?

So this is me sticking my tongue out at you!

I think we've talked about it a lot

but I never did an actual poll. We might have talked about it on the 2011 schedule post or something.

"Stay Classy"

Offseason 2011: Kelly Jennings, Craig Terrill, and Matt Hasselbeck...good riddance.
Shut up about Andrew Luck already.

well i always say the Seahawks

However I think if someone has a gun to my head or a loan shark tells me if I’m wrong he’ll remove my fingers… I’d pick the team that 1) was tied for the best in the West and 2) doesn’t have questions at the QB spot. The Lambs look pretty good overall, AZ is in the same boat as Seattle in the QB position, and San Fran always looks good on paper then loses more than wins.

Standings (until after free agency)
StL 10-6
Sea 8-8
AZ. 7-9
SF. 4-12

I'm assuming that Arizona is going to go out and get Kolb

Who I think could be the best in the NFC West if he comes here… which isn’t saying much. San Fran looks like they’re sticking with a Smith/Keap combo.

I have that hat

I live in Reno, Nevada and I have that hat!!! My heart says the Seahawks but I feel the niners might actually live up to potential this year. But Seahawks should make a run if we sign some key free agents, OG, CB, QB, DL.

by MICHAEL MCGLYNN on Jul 15, 2011 4:47 PM PDT reply actions

I think the Rams are ready

Maybe the hawks can do it with Kolb or Palmer, but until the seahawks get consistent, quality QB play I think the Rams will be a better team

by Dialectic on Jul 15, 2011 4:51 PM PDT reply actions

thats why i think the Lambs are the team to beat

Its not that they have Peyton, Rodgers, Brady, or any of the other leading QBs right now (they will). But they’re a pretty solid team that was on the verge of the playoffs last year. Unless the QB problem in Seattle sorts itself out in the next month (doubt it) we will be mediocre especially considering the schedule this season…

by SGT Lenny on Jul 15, 2011 11:50 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

I think all four teams are capable of winning the west.

And I also believe the NFC West will show much better next year then in past years.

The Rams are probably the best on paper right this minute, prior to FA, and I really believe Bradford is special. If they get a couple more weapons – an RB and a WR, they could be the class of the division.

The Niners are a talented club and the only thing holding them back the past two years was Singletary. They could potentially live up to their talent level this year, maybe easily winning the division.

The Cards are a good QB away from contending, and if Kolb is that guy, and he is all they think he is, they could win the division.

And finally, while most of us think the Seahawks may be a year or two away from truly contending, that could change after FA. Getting the right couple of players on defense, and scoring a starting QB, could make all the difference, putting the Seahawks at the head of the line.

Hows that for equivicating? (BTW, I voted for the Rams)

by Hawksince77 on Jul 15, 2011 5:11 PM PDT reply actions

voted Rams too

Seems like the division is usually cyclical. The 9ers had the best run, the Rams had a pretty memorable bit of time with the high octane, the Cards with Warner doing the impossible and we all know the Hawks rise and fall. Something tells me the Rams are up (barring the Hawks making some big moves), and with Bradford leading they could really pull ahead in the race for the time being.

by SGT Lenny on Jul 15, 2011 11:55 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Going rams

A bunch of te’s and young overall offensive core with a potentially dominant spags d leads to pretty exciting times for them. I’m actually excited too if it causes a renewal of the true early 00’s top of the division rivalry we had

by Stay Off the Flowers on Jul 15, 2011 5:38 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

They're going to need some defensive tackles and cornerbacks before the Rams D is anywhere close to being "dominant."

They have a few nice pieces there, but it’s unlikely that their defense will be that much better this season as it was last season. Even with 2 awesome DE’s starting for them last December, Charlie didn;t seem to be overly burdened.

by J.L. White on Jul 17, 2011 1:35 AM PDT up reply actions

I'll be that guy

I think we’re on the brink of disaster with this current squad. A 7-9 finish was not indicative of how bad we were.

So I say we finish 4-12, just 1 game out of 1st.

by SSreporters on Jul 15, 2011 6:32 PM PDT reply actions

Oh, I'm also that guy.

Awful QB play + new offensive line + awful, gimmicky defense in its second year + that schedule = a royal mess.

by djafrot on Jul 15, 2011 7:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Pretty much

Can’t say I mind, as long as we’re losing as a young team showing flashes of talent.

Our current defensive lineup is horrendous, particularly at the Dline. I don’t think any scheme could make much of it.

by Thomas Beekers on Jul 15, 2011 7:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Some people treat these types of comments as sacrilege

But Im with you on this one Vasilii – as long as we’re developing talent to build a future powerhouse team and a plan for the roster is in place, i can take a few lumps along the way.
If you’re unable to appreciate this type of thing you’re bound to be pretty miserable as a fan.

I don’t think the Seahawks will win the west in 11. There, I said it.
That doesn’t mean I’m not optimistic for this team.

Honestly, I can fully handle a 4-12 season no problem.

For two reasons, that are somewhat contradictory depending on the WAY they lose 4-12.

If it’s a matter of new guys getting in there, showing their rookie-ness, but at least improving as the season goes, I’ll be happy because it’ll look like there’s progress.

But if it’s a matter similar to last year – ditching talent for nothing, relying on veterans to “win forever” (i.e. Hass), and clear signs that the move to a run-heavy offense and funky, easy-to-matchupwith defense – I’ll feel a little vindicated. It’ll suck, but at least it won’t be the fake “progress” we saw last year.

I’ve said recently that I was optimistic. That’s a lie, I’m pretty down on this organization. So far.

by djafrot on Jul 15, 2011 11:35 PM PDT up reply actions

i spent a lot of time with Seahawk Addicts last year

It seemed like fans were turning on eachother left and right as the season progressed. It was a little disheartening reading the hate and the pure frustration regarding the QB position especially.

My thought is that if you’re attempting to develop and give guys a chance then Clipboard Jeebus should have had some time, but that’s another story.

I guess my point is that at about week 9 when we’re working with a 3-5 or 2-6 season how is everyone’s opinion going to change? I would hate for the West to be the laughing stock again.

by SGT Lenny on Jul 16, 2011 12:02 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

I will be deeply concerned if Hasselbeck continues to start and we don’t even get Palmer or Kolb (and I’m not a Palmer fan).

by Benne on Jul 15, 2011 9:35 PM PDT up reply actions

When you play at Qwest/CenturyLink/Whatever Field, 4-12 is a WORST CASE SCENARIO.

2008 was a fluke season where EVERYONE got hurt (and of course the players quit on Mora the next season); I’m not saying that the Seahawks can’t play bad enough not to deserve that kind of record, but when you play in the stadium that we do (and in the division that we do), 4 wins are not that hard to come by.

The Seahawks were worse than they’re 7-9 record indicated last season….and that trend will probably be more prevailant in future seasons here in Seattle than the previous two. We have an advantage that the Niners, Cards and Rams don’t have, which is why I’m usually (at least) a little optimistic going into every season.

by J.L. White on Jul 17, 2011 1:44 AM PDT up reply actions

Maybe its just me.

But if Seattle goes and gets a QB like Vince Young I think we can take it! I just dont wanna trade picks for anyone. And I dont believe PC and JS do either, but I have 0 proof and all the talk sounds like they will trade for one. VY is a FA right? I really want VY, really, really bad on a one year deal to see what he has and how he works with PC. PC seems like the right fit for a guy with the type of baggage that VY would bring.

by unitispat on Jul 15, 2011 8:35 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

No way

The BMW experiment worked because he seems to have realized the error of his ways. VY hasn’t even missed a game so I think he feels entitled to being the man. He has all the talent but seems to be way too immature. Of course I could be completely wrong.

by nachesfire on Jul 16, 2011 2:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Unless something changes @ QB (which it may very well)

STL: 11-5 (not as good as this record, but they beat up on the NFC West, and the defense isn’t terrible. Bradford makes The Leap.)
AZ: 7-9 (assuming a trade for Kolb)
SF: 6-10 (Start with Smith, switch to Kaep who lights a fire under their ass)
SEA: 5-11 (assuming Clipboard Jesus is QB, and Mebane leaves. The days of getting by simply by being in the NFC West are coming closer to the end.)

I hope I’m wrong. I just have really bad vibes right now. The Seahawks need to address the defense in free agency and then hold on to their balls and hope Whitehurst can handle the heat. Sans Mebane, the only interesting parts of this team are the O-Line / running game, Mike Williams, ET & the rest of the young DB’s, and the hope that Curry can figure it out and do something this year. This is all very much up in the air, however. Whichever team adds the best quarterback can probably challenge the Rams.

by mkries on Jul 15, 2011 10:11 PM PDT reply actions

My money would be on Arizona

Here is my reasoning:

1.) Whisenhunt’s job is on the line, and its no secret that Arizona had the worst QB performance in the league last year. Arizona has a good team with no QB. John Morgan said it best when he pointed out that the Seahawks pretty much made the playoffs in 2010 thanks to Kurt Warner’s retirement. With the division being so winnable, no way their FO stays put. They didn’t draft a QB, which to me indicates that they will push hard for a guy like Kolb or Orton. With either of those QBs, especially Orton, Arizona is probably a 10 win team in this terrible division.

2.) Arizona had I thought the best draft in the division this year, and got a guy who many said was the best player in the entire draft with their first pick.

3.) If the new salary cap rules are to be believed, Arizona is going to be in a very good position for free agency once it starts.

As far as the rest of the teams:

Seattle: As fun as last season was, the Seahawks 7-9 record and playoff win concealed some deep flaws. The team was bottom 10 in both offense and defense, and great special teams alone won’t cut it two years in a row. Even in a best case scenario, one where Seattle lands Palmer and the new OL manages an average offense, the defense figures to still be atrocious, especially since Mebane is almost certainly gone. Also, since Seattle overachieved in 2010, they could very well improve in 2011 and still finish with fewer wins. Depending on who the QB is, I could see Seattle winning a wide range of games, but if AZ gets a decent QB, I wouldn’t favor Seattle for the division.

Rams: Bradford was statistically dead average last year, and will be learning a notoriously difficult offense next year under McGenius. The defense could improve further, but I’m thinking the Rams will be a 5 to 8 win team and likely 2nd or 3rd place.

49ers: I like Kaepernick, but I doubt he contributes in 2011. So pretty much, I’m expecting the same 49ers team this year we’ve grown accustomed to: bad, but not “embarrass themselves” bad.

by Kip Earlywine on Jul 16, 2011 2:46 AM PDT reply actions

If it's my actual $$, I'm laying it down on the Niners.

Top to bottom, they have the most talent in the division. And now they’ve got a real coach.

They also play the 3rd place schedule next season. So while the Rams and Seahawks get to tango with the Ravens and Stealers. The Niners (and Cards) will be playing the Browns and some ginger rookie dressed up as tony the tiger.

Factor in the Harbaugh has OWNED Carrol-I’m gonna have to put the dough on SF.

But yeah, we’ll see what the Q/PM can do with 40 mill in cap space.

70% of space is covered by dark matter, the rest by ET.
