The Raiders probably contacted players just like anyone else and have some guys line up. They will sign some guys just like anyone.

Do we panic and get Hass early

I do, at least on our list

If they have similar years, which is likely based on the teams around them, why would PC go get Luck when he can get Barkley who he recruited and still speaks highly of. Based on pure mechanics and QB IQ they are rated similar. I just don’t see us selling the farm to get Luck if we can get Barkley.

by stufr on Jul 26, 2011 8:20 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm not saying it should be the Hawks' first choice.

But if they can’t get Palmer I could understand the thinking behind not wanting to go into training camp, especially a shortened training camp, without a veteran QB of some type.

Pretty sure FAs are allowed to "report" as well.

Since it’s not practice or anything. I know that Doug Free, who’s a FA, has shown up at the Cowboys camp. Remember that players are supposed to sign union cards today as well. I’m sure Hass will turn up eventually.

by Stay Off the Flowers on Jul 26, 2011 7:52 AM PDT up reply actions

How am I supposed to get any work done today?

Just saw Minnesota QB Adam Weber is going to the Bills, I was hoping Hawks would get him since he seemed like a solid candidate to get better at the next level since his development was hindered by having a new offensive system every year in college.

I'm not sure we finish too late this year.

Rams might be good enough to win the division, if we’re in the top 10 (which i find highly possible considering: new playbook, new coaches, + massive youth movement will hurt us) we could be looking at luck

by PA hawkfan on Jul 26, 2011 8:03 AM PDT up reply actions

We're firmly in the sweepstakes as of right now, I completely agree

what my point is, if Carroll thought Kolb gave us a legit shot to win the division and be a contender for the next 10 years the trade would be done. I doubt seriously Carroll would hold off on getting a guy he’s convinced of just for the possibility that we’ll suck for Luck. That’s not competing or winning forever

I think the Seahawks still re-sign Spencer

Maybe just for a year or two, but I’m not sure another team is going to offer him a ton of cash (at least not so much that we can’t afford him). Even if Carroll really likes Unger, Spencer makes good depth at both center and guard.

No reason for players to commit to anything right away, better off waiting to make sure you get the best deal you can, especially since they can’t actually sign yet.

by SolarSon341 on Jul 26, 2011 9:21 AM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

But none of those guys mentioned above are gonna win anything in this league. If tjax can’t win with a team like the Vikings there’s no way he’s doing anything in our situation. The more I’m thinking I feel like either getting kolb or just going with whitehurst are the two best options. Has a THREE way QB battle EVER turned out a quality QB? I think not

by SolarSon341 on Jul 26, 2011 9:30 AM PDT up reply actions

All of those guys have the benefit of being younger and more athletic.

While the odds aren’t great they’ll be long-term producers, both of those factors make it significantly more likely that they’ll provide future benefit to the team. Hasselbeck’s ceiling is incredibly low and is dropping.

by BrianL on Jul 26, 2011 9:33 AM PDT up reply actions

Also probably cheaper in the short term.

Freeing up cash to invest in players who will be here in the future.

by wetzelcoal on Jul 26, 2011 9:34 AM PDT up reply actions

Also a bonus.

It’s going to take five or six million per to keep Hasselbeck. Jackson and Leinart’s stock is as low as it’s going to get, they’ll come cheap.

just a stopgap for two seasons while our QB from next years draft gets aclimated. Do we really wanna be that team with a revolving door of QBs essentially having a tryout every year. Just throw QBs at the wall and hope one sticks

Agreed completely as well

just not tjax, leinart, and whiteheurst. Those that are so finished with hasselbeck to the point that they think those three guys are better options are letting theyre discontent for keeping hass disillusion themselves to thinking they’re better options.

It's debatable whether Whitehurst is better than Hasselbeck, but he may be.

Each have their strengths and weaknesses. It’s just too early to say whether Whitehurst doesn’t deserve the starting job or not.

by Coach Owens on Jul 26, 2011 10:06 AM PDT up reply actions

Exactly

i just don’t advocate the 3 way battle between those guys. Go get a legitimate starter, let whitehurst lead this team, or bring back hass for a 2 seasons but please please please not a battle between those 3. If Charlie loses that battle then what was the point in giving up a 3rd and paying him 4.5 mil a season? Then next season we’ll just repeat that same mistake with the guy that “won” the battle this year. Yuck

Upside on Jackson

2007: (age 24) Vikings go 8-4 with Jackson, 0-4 without
2008: (25) Jackson takes over starting job at halftime in week 14 and goes 3-1 to get the team into the playoffs with a line of 8 TD’s, 1 INT, 81% completion percentage.
2009: Favre

Basically you had a young quarterback on a very positive path of development that had the rug ripped out from under him when the Vikings acquired Brett Favre. It makes sense to give that upside a chance to show up.

Personally, I don't like Orton in Miami...

They already have an Orton in Chad Henne. Throws more picks but he ran out of healthy bodies to throw to last year.

by goatweed on Jul 26, 2011 9:14 AM PDT up reply actions

I would much rather face Orton than Kolb

Orton is unbelievably overated and I would love for that to happen. Plus that drives Kolbs value down IF we were indeed interested in trading for him. I personally don’t want Kolb but it would be better than having a turd of a QB situation in Tarvaris Jackson, Whitehurst, and whomever would be the third guy

by SolarSon341 on Jul 26, 2011 9:13 AM PDT up reply actions

Kolb will make AZ much better...

He was able to put up 4k yards with an anemic offense in Denver. No running game and their best reciever is Brandon Lloyd?

Can you imagine Orton for the first time in his career get some weapons? I am not saying they will win the division but it won’t be because of the QB position.

He has basically been playing from behind in every game he has played, pretty much got shelled by GB.

I was referring

to the Jeebus’ years down in SD. Obvioulsy AR and Co. in Philly put all their money in Kolb as the starter and got rid of the Eagles best QB since Randall. I would think that helps in the push for Kolbs value. Im personally on the fence with him but he has shone and I think Kolbs in and out play for the Eagles caused him to not get that groove.

For example, Rodgers. He sucked it up his first actual year starting but after experience came a big leap. Dont get me wrong I know Rodgers came from a bigger school etc, but just providing a simple basis point. Also, a lot of the same coaches worked in GB with AR.

A future third was not expensive for a QB of his skillset. Hell, look at the the QB’s drafted in rounds 1-2 of the last five years and see where they are. It’s a decent price for a journeyman with low mileage and potential. CW still has some longevity and future 3rd value as a solid backup.

Rob Rang pretty high on Allen

DE Pierre Allen — Seahawks: Allen was viewed as a 4th-5th round pick by NFLDraftScout.com for much of the pre-draft process, but a nagging hamstring injury kept him from running prior to the draft. As such, he slipped into free agency. Seattle has a myriad of needs, but few loom larger than along the defensive line. Allen could be the crown jewel of what appears to be one of the better free agent classes in the league.

I agree with that, but this team is in a position where it almost has to overpay for a QB.

I’m not wild about a 1st round pic for Kolb, but I’m even less wild about a full season of Tarvarvis Jackson and/or an overpayed broken Hasselbeck. Maybe a full season of Jackson puts us in the Luck sweepstakes, but that’s no guarantee. If the FO believes Kolb can be a legit starter in this league, then I’m okay with trading for him.

Here's part of the transcript:
I can let you know the things that I’ve verified personally (meaning I have information from someone I consider a primary source).

12:02
C Chris Spencer is getting a lot of interest from around the league. Multiple teams have inquired. None of them are the Seahawks.

12:02
There are five teams in consideration for Matt Hasselbeck: SF, Arizona, Miami, Tennessee and Seattle.

12:02
Re-signing Brandon Mebane is a pretty urgent priority. Seattle’s pushing to make this happen.

12:03
Now, stuff that I’m hearing, and by hearing, I mean that I’ve talked to someone who’s heard from someone they apparently trust.

12:04
Seattle is part of the Kevin Kolb consideration. Important to note: This is coming almost exclusively from the Philadelphia end, which leads me to believe the Eagles are trying to generate a market for Kolb to get additional compensation out of the Cardinals, who’ve been defined as the most likely suitor.

12:04
Michael Lombardi of NFL Network expects Seattle to be in on Sidney Rice, Minnesota WR.

12:04
Oh, forgot. More direct information: Seattle is interested in DE Ray Edwards of Minnesota.

Biggest pro for Bay Area is an actual Chinatown

Seattle’s international district is bullcrap.

I went whale watching the other day. I think. There were a lot of people in that lake.

Oh yeah and Bay Area has ACTUAL mass transit

Not this pretend monorail SoundTransit thing Seattle is going to take about 50 years to build.

This place fails at Urban Development.

I went whale watching the other day. I think. There were a lot of people in that lake.

They've got a good bakery where I get Pineapple Bun

Jade Garden has good Dim Sum.

Otherwise the ID is kinda small.

I live out here..

And I think they’ve all gone bat-shit crazy..

Every year, it’s about how good they’re going to be. “We’ll win the division EASY!” Then when things don’t go according to plan, they all go completely numb. At least until ESPN picks them to win the division the next season.

So glad we have a solid FO and realistic fan base..

Thanks Matt
