The devil's in the details
I can’t see Nnamdi playing out the whole 5 year contract, so his per-year salary may be higher. They could have tacked on extra years to make the per-year salary lower for PR reasons, though they usually pad the contract for the opposite effect.

Very true
Still, it looks like Nnamdi took a little paycut to play for a contender. Good for him

Yeah, I think that's true as well
I don’t think any NFC West team could have signed him for the same price. He made plenty of money playing on a cellar-dweller, he wants to be contending in the playoffs before he gets too old.

Anthony Parker once told me that...
(former Bucs CB) … the hardest guy he ever had to cover was the one that was in the game plan. Between DRC and Nnamdi one of those guys will get thrown at, someone’s numbers are about to take a dip. But a pretty awesome duo there… but I’d still rather have Mebane.
Armchair Linebacker
Isn't it odd how ESPN and to a degree the NFL network kept hyping up the Jets with the two cornerbacks
Isn’t Philly now in that position? I also saw where it was speculated Philly trade Samuel to the Cardinals which struck me kind of odd. It seems like Reid really values the nickel back position (as he should I don’t understand why teams don’t). DRC will be an awesome nickel back. Reuniting Washburn and Babin might prove to be really successful. Philly is a sneaky team, in a Patriot kind of way as far as personnel decisions go.
Philly is built to win NOW. If their O-Line proves to be just average they have a very good shot in the playoffs. Well until Reid tries to get creative, it usually backfires on him.

But with the kickoffs shorter this year, wouldn't be the worst idea...
One big knock on Coutu was his length on kickoffs — the rule change of 5 yards may make that somewhat less important.
yuuuuuuuuup!
he was about 10 short on kickoffs but could nail a 40 yarder easily. Struggled past that i believe
And the new coverage rules mean that there won't be as many big returns

Still developing a good ability to consistantly read an offense, but, as noted by the tackle increases by year, he’s getting MUCH better over time.
being pursued heavily by lions
per EA:
Stephen Tulloch, LB, 5’11", 240 lbs
Strengths: Tulloch does one thing: tackle. But boy, does he do it well. Stephen has played in every single game of his five-year career, and he has seen his solo tackle numbers rise every year. In 2010, Tulloch finally had a breakthrough year, finishing second in solo tackles (111), while also recording a sack and an interception. Stephen was the leader of a Titans defense that allowed only seven rushing touchdowns in 2010, placing them fourth in the league behind Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Green Bay. Pretty impressive for a guy most NFL fans have never heard of.

Elway? Eli Manning?
They basically did exactly that, demanding trades so they wouldn’t have to play on terrible teams.
Now with more lemon bars!
Elway had the leverage of a Yankees contract to fall back on
I hated the fact Eli weaseled his way to NY even more than what Elway did.
by SmartAssCoug on Jul 29, 2011 6:45 PM PDT up reply actions
He started making noise about holding out even before San Diego drafted him
I’m pretty sure it was less about playing for NY than anywhere but the Chargers. Not quite sure why, since they’ve been a perennial contender since then.
Now, if he were drafted by the Raiders, it would be right and proper common sense for him to want out. I’d happily give up $50-60 million if it meant I didn’t have to shake Al Davis’ withered claw.
Eli held out because the Mannings were friends with Ryan Leaf
and they heard that the Chargers treated him poorly:
Ryan Leaf and Peyton Manning came out of college together and, as the two hot QB prospects that year, compared notes from time to time about their experiences. After they were drafted, Manning told Leaf about how well the Colts organization treated him. They basically bent over backward to make his transition to the NFL as smooth as possible, taking care of all the non-football stuff so Peyton could concentrate on immersing himself into the Colts offense.
Manning was stunned to hear that Leaf’s experience was completely different. Our golfing partner said that Leaf was basically left to figure it out for himself. If that’s true, you combine it with the legendary stories about what an immature jerk Leaf is and begin understand why he crashed so quickly. Again, this is coming from a family friend. Who knows what the Chargers did or did not do for their rookie QB, or whether their management team was equipped to deal with such a high-maintenance player.
Regardless of who was at fault for the failed Leaf-Chargers marriage, the allegedly shabby treatment of Leaf stuck with the Manning clan. And, our new golf buddy explained, that’s why Archie Manning, the patriarch, threw such a fit on draft day when Eli was picked by San Diego.
by Greetings from the Lord Humongous! on Jul 29, 2011 9:53 PM PDT up reply actions
There's was also some thought that the organization just destroyed QBs in general at the time
Leaf was drafted in ‘98 and subsequently bombed. Three years later they used another high draft pick on Brees. He didn’t play terribly well and got benched in favor of Flutie by the end of 2003. They were looking to draft their 3rd QB in 7 years.
Of course, from that point both Brees and Rivers developed into elite QBs, so we’ll never know what might have been had Manning ended up there instead.
by SmartAssCoug on Jul 29, 2011 10:16 PM PDT up reply actions
Locker didn't seem like the type to care that much.
He already had his baseball draft money, and is still going to be making millions in the NFL.
Jake's dad made the decision.
Methinks you’re a bit misinformed there.
Per Schneider
The decision hit home for Schneider and his family, especially his youngest son Jack.
"My little guy was crying the other day because he’s got a Matt Hasselbeck jersey," Schneider said. "He punched me and run in the room.

I'm still amazed at how cheap Mebane's contract is.
I hope this means Schneider learned from his mistake on overbidding early on Whitehurst. This contract reeks of knowing who he’s bidding against and only just barely beating their offers instead of getting worried and heavily overpaying.

I think it also has something to do with the Broncos being over the cap and the Rams being cheapskates.
Teams that wanted to sign him may have struggled to pony up the cash to beat our offer; I like to think Mebane demanded a MUCH higher price than $25 million to leave the Seahawks.

found a new little tidbit of information on a player apparently nobody here shares my enthusiasm for. (i need Thomas to cause when we agree we end up with that player. So far 3/4 i think?)
1. Stephen Tulloch
The middle linebacker was in on 281 tackles over the past two seasons and is an ideal fit for any 4-3 team looking for a Mike linebacker. In 2010, Tulloch also had six passes defensed and an interception. He’s 26 years old and should make the same kind of impact London Fletcher made when he went from the Rams to the Bills and eventually to the Redskins. Teams can figure on 100-plus tackles a season for the next few years.

3/4 of the time that is.
Rice, Gallery, and Branch i believe. I simply assume there is someone we agreed about that we didnt get….
I'm not really against it,
but there has been legitimate discussion before that tackles as a stat should be taken with a grain of salt. Especially when it’s the only stat that pops about the player. I don’t really know where to stand on that, just pointing it out. I know Morgan was pretty against using the stat as a driving reason for adding a player, curious if anyone else has any addition insight?

Will this become the new Hasselbeck debate?
I think it is interesting to note the types of linebackers Seattle are looking at. Are they looking at 3-4 outside linebacker types to back up the LEO? And are they looking at versatile Swiss Army knife type of linebackers to fill roles? Have they been linked credibly to a true inside/middle linebacker, that is considered a starter?
"This whole time, I thought running was some kind of … Leg-magic"
Jake, from the Adventure Time
Check out Danny's article on linebackers
Oh, I read those
But what I mean is how often will someone say Tatupu should be replaced by Hawthorne. Or if Hawthorne was in the middle he would have made that play. While it seems like getting a backup for Clemons is a pretty high priority (as it should be).
The latest target was Travis LaBoy, 6-3 250, while the media may call him a linebacker, I would have to believe that Seattle is looking at him to backup Clemons, 6-3 254.
Carroll is trying to find body types to fill in his system, which is kind of smart because the players he values, the league trend is to underpay.
"This whole time, I thought running was some kind of … Leg-magic"

I think the 'general' fan's debate will be on who will be the starting quaterback if nothing else happens in this free agency (i have a feeling it ain't over yet)
They will probably shout for Tat’s head if he gets injured for the season I guess.

Yeah that's probably true
But personally I think they are done at QB, until next year’s draft, and I don’t mean hoping for A. Luck. I just get the feeling that next year a QB is drafted. To do so earlier would be putting career killing pressure on a kid that probably couldn’t handle it.
In fact I’ll go so far to say that if R. Mallett is successful in the future it has more to do with who drafted him, than who could’ve drafted him earlier.

Though i love Tats it might be benefitial to get someone as his replacement for the future. Looking back at superbowl winners each team has a great safety and great LB that can lead the defense. the thing is, they lead by example, are vocal, and play at a very high level while also staying healthy.

Full writeup
Finally got time to watch tape on Alan Branch. Really like him at that big 5-tech position. Rotational sub-package; inside/outside guy but seals edge at the 5 in 3/4-man fronts. More explosive than quick off the snap. Commands extra attention (at least an xtra chip) allowing others to get through. He will help the 3-tech (Mebane) there. Branch likes pursuit; big body but not stuck at the line but when you see him in a four-man front, it’s easy to see what they liked about him as a player who can keep Red Bryant fresh.
