We know how to utilize him now. I think we understand it. Last year, we tried to figure out how much we should pass-rush him and move him around in pass-rush situations. He’s really an outside linebacker and he does a really good job of doing that. He’s playing first-team in the nickel package right now, and that’s something as a linebacker that he didn’t do before. That’s a good upgrade for him. He’s comfortable with the passing game. He’s just having a fantastic camp. He really seems like a different kid out here.

Crossing my fingers
He has that breakout year we’ve all been hoping to see. Thanks for sharing…
So Curry is taking over Herrings duties in the nickle?
I really hope he looks like a different person then.

I think I'm more confident
in Leroy Hill this year than I am Curry
by Hawkituptoexperience on Aug 14, 2011 9:53 AM PDT via mobile reply actions
Hill didn't look particularly good against the Chargers
Particularly in coverage.

He was one of the main culprits on SDs first drive.
At least from what I saw.
Actually, it seems that none of our starting LBers are particularly well suited for coverage.
They better get there lest OCers simply play action us to death

Curry played in coverage a lot in college
If there’s hope for anyone it’s him. Hill could improve when he gets his rhythm back, I guess. Heater just isn’t a coverage guy.

At least the new guys Smith, Morgan and KJ seem suited for it
Apparently Pete Carroll doesn’t like how Charlie Whitehurst holds a clipboard

Sort of
KJ looked kinda lost in coverage a few times.

First game in nearly a year.
He’s also never been a coverage LB.
by Coach Owens on Aug 14, 2011 12:03 PM PDT up reply actions
Not primarily, but I remember him being used in coverage quite a lot
It’s not good for a veteran LB to look as lost in covering the flats as he did.
Anyway, not being overly critical, just realistic. I don’t think Hill will bring a ton of value to this team, but I hope he’ll surprise.

Is proved or proven correct here?
I’m at a loss.
I think I know enough of hate/ To say that for destruction Rice/ Is also great/ And would suffice.
Both proven and proved are correct past participles of to prove
Proven is also used as an adjective

This reminds me
Someone convinced me a while ago that “a UDFA” is wrong. It’s not.
I’m surprised you guys don’t correct me more often considering I type in Oxford English and not in American English.

I corrected you on 'mediocrily' and you weren't having it.

Yeah well that has nothing to do with type of English, that's just wrong
I enjoy it being wrong though. It is inside my own private circle of wrongness.

As is you're right, having mastered our language.
O/T: do you happen to know the origin of the term “bellcow back”? I don’t mean the history of cows with bells around their necks, but the first time it was applied to a RB.
I think I know enough of hate/ To say that for destruction Rice/ Is also great/ And would suffice.
My English language writing is superior to my writing in Dutch
I haven’t written a university piece in Dutch in years.
And I have no idea.

It means a running back who's so tough he doesn't fear the reaper.
No, wait, that’s a cowbell back. I don’t know where “bellcow back” comes from.

Well, I know where's it from
A “bellcow” is the cow that leads the herd. A “bellcow back” is your lead back.
But as for when it was first used.

Smashmouth is the new sexy!
This is encouraging
hopefully this means we have him focusing and improving as a SAM LB and not as a DE or DT

Surprised by this declaration
Considering he’s spent more than one of the open training camps doing drills under the tarp to keep his gravity low instead of practicing with the team.
Kinda sounds like....
What Rex Ryan was saying about Vernon Gholston before the start of last season. Now granted, Aaron Curry has already produced WAY MORE than Gholston ever did with the Jets, but I think it’s mostly to try and bring the best out of Aaron (or any player really) by any means necessary.
Pete and Rex both strike me as coaches that are extremely confident in their players’ abilities to perform and their own ability to bring the best out of a player. While I think Pete sees some positive signs and steps in the right direction, I wouldn’t count on an All-Pro season just yet. Dude’s got the talent, that’s for sure.
Love reading here btw, hello to you all, I hope to post some more in the future.

Are you familiar with Carlow East?
by Suburban Shocker on Aug 14, 2011 3:54 PM PDT up reply actions
Awesome place!
Hey Shocker,
I LOVE Carlow East! Found out about it late last season and went there for the Saints game. Unreal man. There were over 100 people easy, everyone going NUTS all game long. Diehard ’Hawks fans chanting Sea-Fence whenever the Saints had the ball. Honestly, the atmosphere made the BeastMode run that much better. The place was literally shaking. Drunken girls diving off the bar. Mayhem!
Who knew!? Lexington Ave between E85th and 86th street, an NYC Seahawks fans safe haven. Oh, can’t forget the good beer specials (3 or 4 dollar Sam Adams pints) and blue Seahawks shots (5 bucks) and the excellent barkeeps either. Overall, an awesome place!

First I've heard of it
Nice to know it’s there. Guess I’ll be seeing you soon!

What?
A Seahawks bar in NYC? I have been having to go to Blondies and other less desirable places to watch games. I am most likely moving to the UES in the next couple weeks. Currently I am on the UWS. Now I know were to go in my Mike WIlliams and teletubby combo.
Sweet!
You were there for the Saints game? Niiiice. I found out about it one day when googling for video of “Beastquake.” One of the top results was a shot of the reaction at Carlow’s NYC. And I’m watching this video, thinking “what are all these Seahawks fans doing in New York??” So, a little more googling, and that link is what I came up with.
Just the other day, shopping at a deli, the guy behind the counter saw my Hawks cap and asked “what’s a Seattle Seahawks fan doing here?” I answered, “I ask myself that question just about every day.” (Actually no, I just told him I was born there and still like the teams.) But at last, I’ve found my people! And I may well have watched you on YouTube, if you were at the Saints game.
Definitely going to try to hit that joint this season.

Honestly, I buy it because I remember who he was coming out of college.
A bigger stronger Derrick Brooks, the guy who was a prototypical style linebacker but who shocked everyone with a physical profile closer to Demarcus Ware. And because of his draft slot, our needs, and the amount of money he’s being paid, everyone wanted him to be our next Julian Peterson. Sack artist at the line of scrimmage one play, smothering a TE the next. Well, Peterson’s best pass rushing years were not early in his career, his coverage ability was best back then.
Aaron Curry could develop into a good pass rusher over his career, but it’s not his best strength coming out of college. His abilities made him more suited to moving over to 4-3 MLB than a pure pass rusher, it was just his insane measurables that made pass rushing so tantalizing.
He’s improved at pass rushing as a Seahawk, he can blow up an offensive lineman, but he’s not an edge player that consistently dominates yet and I still like the idea of playing him more like a traditional linebacker and let him play where he naturally came from, then add responsibilities as he masters that.

Reviewing the game again after Dukeshire's note
I see Curry tracking receivers as a nickel linebacker, basically Herring’s role. If he can do that effectively (not enough snaps here to say much), that’s huge.

He defensed a pass deep pass against Leon Washington today.
So that’s something. Portis threw the ball though.

A deep pass*
fail.

He's just been trying too hard to live up to the media hype .(The hurrier I go the behinder I get)
Now that he’s not in the spotlight all the time he can get comfortable just doing his job. Not feeling as if he has to be Mr. super #4 draft pick support the whole defense guy.
I'm one of those who's bemoaned my disappointment in Curry before.
But effort and intensity has never been his problem.
So, yeah, be right P.C.
Love to see Curry pump this team up.

Between the lines
Pete says" He is getting ridiculous money to do things he can’t do. Like get sacks. Previous coaches and management staff=Morons! The drafted him to be Lawrence Taylor because he was pretty in his combine tights. He is an average outside backer, and when we lower our expectations to that standard, he ain’t too bad!

I keep my fingers crossed that Curry will become
the Roving Death Machine that he is being paid like. He is fast enough to play in coverage, but is he smart enough? He is ferocious enough to play the run, but he continues to miss tackles. I just don’t know. The only thing I am positive about is that he gets paid entirely too much money for his level of play.
C’mon Ken Norton. Do something with this dude.
