Seahawks Free Agency Open Thread 8/2/11

A couple updates:

--Former Rams FB Mike Karney is reportedly set to visit Seattle, per the St Louis Post-Dispatch. Karney is 5'11, 260, 30 years old, and is a two-time Pro-Bowler (2006, 2007). He was second team All-Pro in 2006. This move would make sense, --he would be much cheaper than Vonta Leach but still has the veteran wiles and blocking skill they're looking for. He's a big human.

--Per eGriz.com and a good find by Seahawk_Talk, UDFA RB Chase Reynolds out of Montana has signed a free-agent contract with the Seahawks. Reynolds is 6'0, 195, and had a prolific career at Montana, as he ended up three measly yards short of being their all time rusher. I haven't seen official confirmation of this from the team, but here is a bit of background on Reynolds, again tip of the cap to Adam Wright of Seahawk_Talk.

--Per SuperSchefter, veteran K Jeff Reed is in town to work out for the Seahawks. He had previously been with the Steelers for years and 49ers last season. If you google image search his name, you get a visual representation and confirmation of the rumors that he's a weird dude. Then again, Brian Wilson is a weird dude, and he does well on the field. So I'll withhold judgement.

--I'll be at Training Camp for the next few hours. Follow me on Twitter for some live updates.

Talk, discuss, converse, have fun with it. Open thread time.

I predicted this morning that Zach MIller will re-sign with Oakland.

Now it’s looking like that’ll happen, according to some rumors.

Al Davis is a freaking nut job – he’ll overpay if he has to.

Always up for some Twitter action @nandron. I only talk NW sports, though.

Agreed

Once they moved to clear cap space the writing was on the wall. The visit was a smart move by Miller either way.

Clayton tweeter this morning that the raiders are still 17 mill over the cap

I’m sure they can get that down but the hawks should have a lot more flexibility to get it done, unless miller never wanted to be here

With Gallery and Cable here, I would think or would like to think, he had a visit in completely good faith.

It’s easy to forget that these guys are moving their whole life around and it’s a big decision either way.

But 2/5ths of the projected starters are rookies, a 2nd year player, and a 3rd year player who has struggled. Maybe not Kruetz, but I wouldn’t be upset to see us get another vet, especially at center.

Miller would be kind of a luxury anyway.

I think most people here are okay with going into the season with the tight ends we have, which includes a veteran and some youngsters with upside. It’s always worth a try to get the top free agent at the position, or any position, if you can; but, as others have said, not worth getting into a bidding war with Al Davis under the circumstances. I suspect a lot of people are less excited about the immediate upgrade than about the rosterbation possibilities resulting from Carlson becoming expendable.

by Suburban Shocker on Aug 2, 2011 12:03 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

Which TE on our roster is our best run-blocker?

I’m excited about Miller because if Carroll and Cable want to go smash-mouth football, his biggest asset would be his excellent run-blocking. He’s a far-and-away upgrade over any of the other TEs on our roster in that regard, correct?

by Razztopia on Aug 2, 2011 12:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually, if yesterday's comments are any sort of evidence, there is a lot of people excited about the possibility of Miller coming here.

We also don’t know for sure if Carlson would be traded following a Miller signing. He barely makes any money and we run two TE sets so they may hold on to him in that situation.

by Aman2692 on Aug 2, 2011 12:28 PM PDT reply actions

Speculation on my part

I think the interest in Miller is the fact he’s a top 5 TE, whereas Boss and Carlson are similiar. I don’t think we’re specifically looking to upgrade the TE position but if we can land a top 5 TE who is only 25 for a relatively reasonable price that would be awesome.

I wouldn't say Boss/Carlson are necessarily similar

Boss is far more brash and even if doesn’t catch a ball he blocks the hell for ya.
I think he’d a nice tough side to compliment carlson who can just focus on recieving

I only meant similar in terms of caliber, where they rank among other TE's in the league

as opposed to Miller who’s clearly in the top 5, arguably top 3

Auburn’s kicker isn’t exactly clutch but that’s not important I could care less what college someone went to to figure out who should be drafted by the Seahawks (Locker). Best player you can get at any position.

same thing in Oregon with Keff Maehl

Except that has a ton to do with the system and LaMichael James and Barner out of the backfield. Run a spread offense, get the D leaning forward and toss one over the top or on a deep slant route and watch Maehl. Jones was by far the best I saw on Saturdays, and the kid from BSU.

by SGT Lenny on Aug 2, 2011 2:07 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

His name is David Paulsen

Have a lot of friends that went to school with the Oregon TE. Apparently he is the HUMBLEST person you’d ever met. Never heard someone described as humble so many times.

Marquess Wilson and Kristoff Williams have the chance to make a hell of a lot of big plays next year. With Karstetter as a solid possession receiver holding down the middle and hopefully Gino Simone can finally put it together, the Cougs could have a very interesting 4 WR set.

I don’t think people realize how potentially prolific the Tuel passing attack might be this season. Going to be very fun to watch, even if the D still allows 87.6pts a game.

by mjkleko on Aug 2, 2011 2:17 PM PDT up reply actions

but from what I see he got released after 9 games last year because he missed 6 field goals over 40 yards? He also made 2 over 50 and was 9 of 10 in San Francisco including 3 of 3 from over 40. Seems like a good option to me. He was ~90% in the previous 3 seasons.

Mike Florio just deleted my comment about the Zach Miller speculation.

All I said was, “This isn’t a substantial report but rather a speculative opinon by an Oakland based radio host. He even admitted as much on his show today. Why don’t we wait for something more concrete about the team Miller lands with before passing judgment?”

I guess he took it personally when all I was trying to do was explain why either side shouldn’t be getting too excited (or disappointed) until we know all the details.

If you watch the Raiders

they didn’t ever put a TE on the field that was a blocking liability. It was Miller (who’s very good, and very technical, but not a physically dominant blocker) and then a bunch of pure blocking types. They also used multiple TE sets often. Cable’s not messing around when it comes to improving the running game.

Nobody knows what they have in Kolb. He's practically as much of an unknown at this point that Whitehurst was when we traded for him last year.

Yeah he’s started some games but his stats are nothing special and he beat bad teams while losing to good ones. It’s not going out on much of a limb to say he’ll outperform Anderson, Skelton, and Hall but I wouldn’t say he’s a huge upgrade when we simply don’t know.

49ers – 5
Rams – 8

by bleedshawkblue on Aug 2, 2011 3:36 PM PDT up reply actions

People can speculate, I could speculate, but ugh, it's so tough when we STILL have so much player movement.

For instance, my guess might be different if we had Zach Miller. Players are still getting cut. Even as of today, lots of positions up for grabs. I definitely have higher hopes for the Hawks than I did a week ago. If the offensive line is healthy, I think we could be in really good shape and maybe get to 9 wins if Pete keeps impressing us with diamonds in the rough.
The Niners are obviously in bad shape right now but in this division could they win 6 games? They still have some good players, and new head coaches are always a wild card.
The Rams have the divisions best defense perhaps? And best RB and maybe best QB. They could be slated in that 8-9 win range.
The Cards have made some big upgrades, but this is still upgrades on a team that was completely terrible last season. 7-8 wins.

Not only is there a lot of movement still but each team has a huge range of potential with the guys they already have.

If Kolb turns out to be worth what they spent on him and the offensive line holds together they could be a decent 8 or 9 win team. If all of the Rams’ talent come together on the offensive line and in their front seven with Bradford taking the next step they could be a 10+ win team. If the Seahawks offensive line stays healthy, the rookies on the right side max out and Tarvaris builds off his 08 season the Hawks could push 10 wins. Or none of it could happen and we’ll see another 7-9 division winner.

Basically the only team that doesn’t look to have much of a shot is San Francisco.

All I keep thinking,

is that with the addition of Rice, Gallery and our young talented line, now Miller…

…we are absolutely the ideal team for a QB to get drafted to next year. I hate to look ahead already, but the thought of our new offense with Luck/Barkley/Jones at the helm sounds like a potential dynasty. That much youth and talent is going to be scary, that’s for sure.

by NinjaHawk on Aug 2, 2011 2:29 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

I'm not going to rosterbate or speculate but I did think about this while driving home last week.

There was a run on “franchise QBs” in this years draft that the Seahawks did not participate in. That means that barring something very unexpected, you will not see the following teams looking for a QB next year:
Carolina, Tennessee, Jacksonville, Minnesota. Additionally, the Niners draft Kaepernick, which probably wouldn’t stop them from drafting a QB #1 if they were in that position, unless Kaepernick just blows up this year. But they did JUST spend a high pick on a QB. Same with the Bengals on Andy Dalton.
We already knew these teams don’t need a QB:
New England, NY Jets, Pitt, Baltimore, Indy, Houston, Kansas City, San Diego, Philly, NYG, Chicago, Dallas, Green Bay, Detroit, Atlanta, New Orleans, Tampa Bay, St Louis and Arizona.

There are other teams that may have their QB but undetermined: Denver, Cleveland.

But as far as teams that NEED a franchise QB?
Miami, Buffalo, Raiders, Redskins, Seahawks.

Now, some of these teams will change groups, that is for certain. But thanks to this past draft, and some trades and player movement, I think its basically 5 teams who desperately need a QB and as many as 3 potential great ones in next years draft, not to mention more player movement, etc.

Even if the Seahawks weren’t bad enough to get a top 10 pick, there’s a good chance there will be some really crappy teams picking in the top 10 that have a franchise QB. In fact, its absolutely going to happen, so there’s going to be plenty of room for movement in next years draft, even to #1.

follow @casetines

by Kenneth Arthur on Aug 2, 2011 2:42 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

My only argument with this line of reasoning...

…is that truly potentially great QBs are very rare (just 2 – Bradford and Stafford – in the past three drafts) and next year’s class looks to have up to 3 (Luck, Barkley, Jones) and perhaps even more.

If these 3 guys all declare in 2012, and all have seasons that enhance/validate this high rating, do you think teams that drafted Ponder/Kapernick/Dalton/Locker (depending on how he shows in his rookie year)/Newton (depending on how he shows in his rookie year), Tebow, Cassel, Romo (actually undrafted), Kolb will pass on selecting one of these guys given the opportunity?

Also, given the rookie payscale, drafting another QB high in the draft won’t cripple the team in any way, and if their current guy (Cassel, Kolb, say) still seem servicable, they can always trade them.

Point is, if Luck/Barkley/Jones are all that, don’t plan on any of them making it out of the top ten, and don’t plan on any old team willing to trade away the opportunity to draft one of them.

by Hawksince77 on Aug 2, 2011 3:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Hasselbeck: sixth round. Joe Montana: third round. Jamarcus Russell: #1 overall.

No need to splurge on the number one pick. Pete’s MO is to give people chances and see what works; there isn’t any surefire way to get a QB anyway. Building a team that’s ready for a QB is a very good place to start, though.

We’ll just keep shopping at yard sales, thank you. Seems to be working at all the other positions.

As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.

This is an absolute coup

The more I thought about it, I couldn’t understand why Miller would dream of going anywhere else but Seattle after meeting with Schneider and the coaching staff.

Sure there’s no franchise QB in place right now, but this team has cornerstones in the right places on offense and is ridiculously young. When Miller is 28, the core of the offense will be experienced as all hell and most importantly will have spent their formative years together. The talent is undeniable as well.

Besides QB (obviously), the offense is rounding out nicely. I’d like to see a true fullback brought in, likely at the expense of Chris Henry, and I hadn’t realized Karney was still only 30, as he seems like one of those guys whose been in the league forever.

But 2 weeks ago I never thought we’d be at this point.

As for anymore signings, I’d like Schneider to pick up a fullback and sign a linebacker. I was really hoping for a while there that they’d pick up Ernie Sims by surprise (signed with Colts today) even if the fit wasn’t perfect. Adrian Peterson has called him frightening on the field and he is ridiculously fast for such a good hitter.

The only problem is there aren’t a lot of quality middle linebackers left who would be content to come in and possibly only play sparingly. If I had my pick, I’d like to see the Hawks pick up Kirk Morrison, allowing Hawthorne to play outside and free up Hill to move around a bit.

I think it's a nice thought to go into training camp and pre-season and the season like "We can do it this year!"

Because hey, i guess you never know, but how many Bills realy believe that this year?

I think that they are clearly “going for it” while the division is still vulnerable. We dont have a franchise QB because we decided to save our picks and spend the cash on Miller/Gallery/Rice instead of Kolb. Which is a good plan.

follow @casetines

by Kenneth Arthur on Aug 2, 2011 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Good plan? Yes indeed, you're right.

Had we spent all those resources on Kolb, we’d have a QB but the weapons we acquired like Rice and Miller might not be Seahawks and they’d be locked up long-term with other teams.

Because we did it this way, we add a QB next year to the weapons we have in place and we could be in serious business here. I love it! Pete Carroll and John Schneider may be bringing us to greatness.

Some comparisons for top NFL tight end salaries

Jason Witten is almost done with a 7 year, $29.5 million contract he signed in ’06

Dallas Clark was signed to a 6 year, $36 million contract in 08’

Tony Gonzalez signed a 5 year, $35 million contract 10’ with the Falcons

Antonio Gates recently signed a 6 year, $39.8 million contract just last season

Vernon Davis is playing on a 6 year, $42.7 million contract signed in 2010

Marcedes Lewis just ended his holdout and it appears he is going to work out a contract with the Jags soon. Wonder how this affects things.

So when you put Zach’s contract of $34 over 5 years, it really isn’t too bad; but that’s only if he maintains his status as an elite tight end.

If a Carson Palmer type is going to be better than a rookie QB during their 1st year and maybe 2nd year then that’s still a better option to me. Some blue chip QB prospects need to not be thrown in to the fire. I guess it all depends on who the QB prospect is. I wouldn’t sit a guy like Luck behind a vet, but we aren’t going to get Lucky next year.

Depending on how things go this year and next offseason, he may not even be thrown into a fire.

But yeah, I get what you’re saying. Most likely we won’t be landing a top rated QB prospect, so having some vet to show him the ways would be beneficial.

Brady had a caddy too to start with.

Then again, Brady was drafted in the 6th round.
