Charlie Whitehurst
I was impressed with his throws. He was very accurate for the most part. I know it was against the 2nd and 3rd strings but his throws were on the money. Doesnt matter how good your pass defense is if the qb can thread the needle.
Charlie by default.
Honorable mention to Washington, Durham, and the TE’s.
Durham had a lot of targets in the last half of the game
Charlie and Durham were offseason training partners in ATL, so there’s likely some familiarity there.

Easily McCoy
Played a ton of snaps, blocked well, caught well. Good game.
Well maybe not too easily, Washington is close.
Formerly Known As Vasilii
Yeah I put him too
But I think I shoulda put Leon cause he ran well even wit that o line. Who do you think is gonna make it for TEs. I mean, Miller is no doubt but Ive heard next to nothin bout Carlson even though he probly a given too. But I really like McCoy but I also liked Morrah last year but havent heard anythin bout either recently. Mccoys caught like what 4 or 5 TDs in both Preseasons so far? It probably dont mean anythin but its somethin
Anthony McCoy
And Dominique Byrd right behind him.

Whitehurst or Washington
Whitehurst seemed more collected and actually made some reads. HIs passes were pretty tight and decently accurate.
Washington was highly productive in his limited action as RB. Wouldn’t doubt it if he became even more involved in the rushing attack.
Clipboard Jesus!
Not spectatcular, but competent. Uncle Petey needs to open up the QB competition.
Speaking of competition...
I like what I see from Josh Portis. He’s no starter as of right now, but in my opinion a fine candidate for the future QB for the ’Hawks
And T-Jax needs to start completing a pass..
Before I’m impressed.

The line needs to step up
We can’t get an accurate read on T-Jax until he has a little more time to throw. He doesn’t even have time to make it to his 2nd read. I voted for Charlie, but I don’t think it would have been much different if he would have started with the first team.

That said
I think the zone blocking is getting better. There was some nice cut back lanes and big holes to run through at times. Things r coming around just need more time

Sure, the line sucked.
But they always do. How long do we have to keep milking this excuse? Same line, vs a slowly-getting-worse defense, had these passer ratings:
TJ: 40.8
CW: 102.3
JP: 39.6
You can’t argue that the line suddenly got that much better at QB change time, and then got lousy again at the next QB change. Or that the defense got that much weaker, and then got strong again, right at QB change time. The only reasonable conclusion is that CW had a way better night than the other guys did.
I grant that TJ was far, far better than his abysmal stats suggest. He rescued many plays that should have been sacks. The int wasn’t his fault, the line broke really fast, there was no excuse for the lack of a running game, and so on, yada yada. But CW stepped into that same situation and threw catchable ball after catchable ball.
One night isn’t enough to decide the future, and maybe Charlie just happened to have a good night… but how long are we going to keep talking about how it’s everything but the QB? Make all the excuses you want, but the QB makes a HUGE difference.

CW didn't play behind the same line as TJ
He did for a large part last week, but most rotated out this game

Its got to be McCoy
He looked fantastic whether it was playing with the 1’s or 2’s.
He could end up being a steal in the 2010 draft which we got in part to the Carrol USC connection.
Carlson looks to have less and less of a purpose on this team. I really hope we shop him and get something for him while we can.

I have zero expectations for Charlie..
And have to say he impressed the hell out of me. Ball was on the money and he looked calm and poised. Definitely not the shaky Charlie I remember from last season.

Already looks better on returns than Tate ever has
by lemonverbena on Aug 21, 2011 3:00 PM PDT up reply actions
Yes
Honorable Mention goes to Doug Baldwin.
I know that Golden Tate has all this amazing athletic talent, yadda, yadda…. but I think Tate needs to be put behind Doug Baldwin on the depth chart so Tate can sit and watch Baldwin teach him how to PLAY FOOTBALL.

I don't know about that
When this happened:
R.Longwell kicks 66 yards from MIN 35 to SEA -1. D.Baldwin to SEA 15 for 16 yards (M.Sherels).
-1 and he’s very lucky to get it back to the 15. Yet somehow the gnashing of teeth that was aimed at Tate wasn’t present for Baldwin.

I was actualy impressed with Baldwin's receiving as compared to Tate
Lemonverbena mentioned returns, but what his post made me realize is that Doug Baldwin’s receiving routes and hands look better than Golden Tate’s ever has. Tate may be a great athlete, but lots of great athletes never become good football players. Golden Tate is not a good football player at this point and he seems slow to learn.
Baldwin knows how to play the game. He didn’t need a single OTA, he just showed up to camp, got open, and made catches. I’m tired of waiting for Tate to show he’s a player.
"Football players are temperamental. That's 90 percent temper and 10 percent mental." - Doug Plank
I'm not sure why we're presenting Tate and Baldwin as direct competitors
But yes, Baldwin looks like a better, and more prototypical slot receivers than Tate right now.

because I think they are direct competitors
for the slot position. Both were practicing at slot WR in the VMAC practices I watched. I know Tate has been tried at flanker, but I can’t see either of these guys likely get many snaps at flanker or split end.

But if one were to start at that position
at least Baldwin would catch the ball.

Agree
Don’t think Tate is in any real danger of not making the roster but the staff is definitely giving Baldwin the chance to press him on the depth chart at slot and PR. I kind of wish Tate was in danger and maybe he is long term, but with Butler still rehabbing he seems safe.
Maybe they could get a mid-round pick for Tate and keep a WR corps of Rice, BMW, Obo, Durham, and Baldwin with 5 TE. More likely he stays and Morrah or Byrd go.

And if BMW keeps dropping 'em...
just go with Rice and Obo. One flashy, one reliable, call it good.

Tate..
was very disappointing. Where is his focus???? I have not seen any practices, but man, he really baffles me.

As suggested elsewhere, give CW some prime time &
Tarvaris some 2nd half time. See what we learn.

Charlie
I did not see any throws that were not on target. Even the throw were Pat Williams got tripped and Charlie was getting clobbered by the blitzing linebacker.
Okay, that one was kinda risky
but CW was still by far the class act of the outfit that night.

I think TJ was the MVP by far.
Jumpy jackson sure can throw the jump pass. He is getting so good he can almost click his heels together while chucking the ball 40 yards down field without a receiver in sight.
by Savage Seahawk fan on Aug 21, 2011 8:46 PM PDT via mobile reply actions 1 recs
Here's my TJax theory:
1 – if there is no lock-out, TJax never comes to Seattle (with the lock-out, TJax is the only veteran available that can come in and start right away, what with Bevel in Seattle – again, that was the theory)
2 – if there is no lock-out, the competition to start at QB is probably between Leinart and CW (or, another large possibility, Hass gets re-signed – the lock-out makes him that much more valuable to Tennessee so they over-pay)
3 – prior to signing TJax, PC agrees that he will join the team as the starting QB. This would not be an unreasonable condition for TJax, or his agent, and from PC’s perspective, he hasn’t made any such commitment to CW, and it should work out just fine – I mean, we all think TJax got screwed in Minnisota and PC figures he can fix the guy
4 – Leinart wants to come to Seattle, but when he learns that a starter has already been named, he backs out
5 – Now PC is screwed, because he has to keep his commitment to TJax, but TJax is not the best QB on the team
I can’t think of any other set of circumstances that explains PC’s immediate declaration of who will be his starting QB, or his insistence, despite his “always compete” mantra, to not admit some level of competition for the starting QB spot.
You make a lot of good points...
The only reason I can think, is that with limited time, the starting RBs, WRs, TEs and OL need time with one guy. If there was a competition at QB, then to be fair they would be alternating time with the 1s. That might not – according to PC, anyway – give them enough time to gel as a unit.
by PerryCollective on Aug 21, 2011 9:47 PM PDT up reply actions
After the lockout, it was reported that Leinart signed with the Seahawks.
A day later he changed his mind (or something changed). I am postulating several things:
1 – Leinart wanted to join the Seahawks, and if there had been no lockout, would have earlier in a regular FA period, and having done so, the FA wouldn’t have pursued Jackson. Jackson was subsequently pursued due to the lockout and his familiarity with Bevel.
2 – Jackson insisted on being the starter as a condition of his signing. PC agreed.
3 – After Leinart indicated his willingness to sign with Seattle (remember no contracts were done until Friday that week, and this was earlier) he discovered that Jackson had already been promised the starting gig, and he (Leinart) had no immediate opportunity to start. With this new information, he decided to stay with the Texans.
That’s how the reasoning goes, anyway. Mostly suppostion based on what has been publicly stated.
by Hawksince77 on Aug 22, 2011 10:29 AM PDT up reply actions
I have long postulated one thing:
1 – Carroll never had any intention of signing Matt Leinart. The media have been trying to push them together since Carroll took the job, with no evidence other than having coached him at USC.
by lemonverbena on Aug 22, 2011 11:20 AM PDT up reply actions
I've kinda had the same theory.
TJ signed because he was offered the starting job, Leinart backs out because backing up TJ is career suicide, Carroll is in a bind because TJ is horrible so far and CW is lighting it up and he can’t just go “jerking TJ around”. The only way this works out for Pete now is if TJ gets “injured” and CW runs away with the job ala Vick last season-so if TJ takes a tough hit and looks a bit woozy, I expect it to be called a level 8 super aids concussion that keeps him out for 6 games.
(all a theory, no doubt.)
70% of space is covered by dark matter, the rest by ET.
hadn't considered the injury angle - that's good, and not unlikely, as TJax has an injury history, and with his poor pocket presense...
…is just a matter of time.
That would be the easy way out for PC.

If the line doesn't get better.
We’re gonna go through 6 QBs & Portis will be starting by week 7

There was no competition at QB last year either.
It seems like they just decided on having Whitehurst be a career backup. Albeit a well-paid one.

Josh Portis
Judging just off of his play the last two games, I think we may have found a legitimate QB of the future if we groom him correctly. However I don’t see him learning anything totally useful from T-Jax or CW. Neither of them seem like starting caliber QB’s to me in all honesty. All other excuses and reasons aside, our QB situation is completely terrible.
I think that the whole grooming of QB thing is probably a little overstated, and I don't know that it has as much impact as actually getting reps does.
I think that Portis has some upside but obviously has a way to go before he is our QBOTF. I think he is definitely the 3rd best QB on the team, and he could rise in the ranks, but I’m not sure the probability is all that high.
My wording isn't quite correct
But it does get my point across. I am fully aware that Portis is nowhere near being a starter, he does have a lot more to learn before he is at that caliber. I just don’t see him learning much from our other QB’s. In all honesty, T-Jax seems like the beginning of a failed good idea and I’ve never cared much for Whitehurst. I love everything else that Carroll and our FO is doing and see us being a force to reckon with in just a year or two. However, that all depends on how our QB situation evolves. Jackson may only last a year or two here and Whitehurst not much longer.
by Greg Ballew on Aug 21, 2011 10:02 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah and I mostly agree with you, and I'm all for keeping him on the roster
but are you suggesting we bring in a veteran QB to “groom” him? I think I would rather see us grab someone in the draft next year seeing that the draft class is deep at that position rather than bringing in a veteran to groom Portis. He was a UDFA for a reason.
I did not mean groom in the traditional sense
I did not mean a Hasselbeck/Locker situation where somebody is brought in for that reason. More of a Favre/Rogers situation where the starting QB is one that you can pick up some good habits of.
As of right now, Portis is the only shining light I see at our QB situation so I’m just grabbing on to it for some hope. Best case scenario, all of the young players get some experience this season whether we play a lot of games or not. That way when we get a true QBOTF he will have a solid line to stand behind and have weapons around him he can be confident in. Our only missing piece right now is a solid QB.
by Greg Ballew on Aug 21, 2011 10:12 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah I just don't see that type of situation happening with the Hawks.
It looks like it’s going to be T-Jax and Whitehurst this year, and most likely a QB being drafted next year, so there’s no real room for an established QB in the rebuilding plan the Hawks seem to have. He’s an interesting prospect and might have the most upside of the three QBs we have now, but he just seems like a long shot to ever make it. I think we need to give T-Jax and Whitehurst a fair shot.
What kind of learning does anyone do behind Favre?
Favre burps and farts on you in the meeting room, then goes out and spins out out sacks and throws impossible sidearm passes or jump balls. Veteran leadership is overrated.
by lemonverbena on Aug 22, 2011 8:25 AM PDT up reply actions
I think that Whitehurst probably was the MVP, all of the 2nd team caveats of course apply,
but the person I might be most excited about on offense is Leon. He looks very explosive and I think he could be in for a good year. I think Lynch still starts the season as RB1 but I could see a pretty legitimate 40/30/30 split happening depending on how things go.
I love the way Washington hits the hole and makes a strong first cut
Less returns this year so he’ll get plenty of snaps. Maybe even a goal line option?
by lemonverbena on Aug 22, 2011 8:28 AM PDT up reply actions
I still would like to see Lynch get the ball at the goal line, I think.
That being said a small elusive RB with a good first cut could do well on the goal line, so you may be onto something.
Is there a reason we're not voting on defensive player of the game as well?
Raheem Brock owned on Saturday.
Charlie because good QB play > everything else
but I liked McCoy, Byrd, Leon and Durham as well.
