GT Beats Pinkard, Mays for TD
Came across this highlight of a Golden Tate TD catch against USC in South Bend while browsing Taylor Mays videos. You've probably seen this before, I think this was a well-watched game, but it has some significance given the inclusion of two Seahawks currently on the fringe and the recently traded Taylor Mays.
First play in the video, Josh Pinkard on man-to-man coverage on GT with Mays helping over the top. Just a go route with Clausen throwing a laser on the money to Tate. Tate hangs on and makes a great grab after out-sprinting Pinkard. I wonder if this play has been brought up at all during camp..
I like Pinkard. In this particular highlight he stills manages to flip his head around and locate the ball despite being a step behind the receiver, not succumbing to blind flailing. But I have a tough time thinking he beats out LeGree, Maxwell, and Sherman for those last few spots in the secondary.
Roster cuts are going to be interesting and I'm pretty confident whoever we release in the secondary is going to get picked up fairly quickly.
But one thing you can tell from these two plays is that GT is purely relying on his athletic ability. First speed, then the second play, although he lights up Mays which is awesome, you can hardly call what he ran a route, just a sloppy turn in order to peel away from the retreating corner.
For the individuals calling for Tate's head, I still think its way too early, he deserves at least till his third season especially due to this truncated off season. I seriously hope he improves as watching Percy Harvin play the slot in Bevell's offense was very entertaining and seeing Tate perform to half that level would be great.
EDIT: Sorry for not linking the vid to open another page (don't know how when its in the title), I am a rookie.

Baldwin is gonna take all Tate's playing time.
It’s too early to give up on him…maybe. But he’s wasting his opportunities and there are other players seizing theirs so it’s all uphill for him now.
70% of space is covered by dark matter, the rest by ET.
Well, as I was alluding to with the Percy Harvin reference,
You know Bevell would just love to use Tate in that quick hit/screen passing game to just get him the ball and see if he can make a play. And that’s where I wonder if Baldwin has that dynamic edge to his game, the ability to make defenders miss like the former tailback Tate.
For Tate however, I think it’s always been a bit of an uphill battle. I believe that Carroll and Schneider recognized he would be a bit of a project, I just think they thought that he’d be able to see the field a bit more, even if it was in a simplified role. I guess that’s what’s just so damn disappointing, that Tate can’t even manage to keep his basic skills under control on Sundays where he botches the gimme’s that would give Carroll the confidence to call a play where he’s the primary read say, once a quarter. Last week’s game compares well in that regard as he managed to spazz out and botch a catch early on and killed all of Carroll’s confidence in him.
It’s way to early to think that the front office or coaching staff has at all given up on him or pushed him considerably down the depth chart. Seeing as he’s only managed to have two poor preseason games after virtually no offseason, It’’s not out of the question that he ends up as the Seahawks 3rd or 4th best reciever by seasons end.
Listening to the radio with people calling in and just tearing him a new asshole, calling for him to get cut and what not was just absurd. Maybe it’s the fact that he went to Notre Dame as I’ve noticed people always seem to rag a little harder on Irish alum not reminiscent of Rudy. I just can’t wait for him to have a 100 yard game and everyone call him the next Boldin.
Pinkard beats out the other
DBs Legree and Maxwell who will likely end up on the PS.
Best case scenario for Golden Tate is
a poor man’s Nate Burlison.
Though Nate is an erratic flanker, and
Less Than Golden is a consistent buffoon.
