The 500 ads
on the site for this app have brought it to a crawl and have added about 400K in memory usage to run my browser.
70% of space is covered by dark matter, the rest by ET.
Happens every season though doesn't it?
The blood-red bloody mary thing last year was particularly rough on memory
We’re always working to decrease page load times caused by ads, including ones that we run for one day for our own iPhone app. We just started actively measuring load times across multiple browsers, from multiple geo locations. And we have more control over our ad server.
Of course we need ads to pay the bills and more importantly all the great SBN bloggers, but it’s a big initiative for our product team to help figure out a way to properly balance the ad experience with the community + reading experience.
The only ads we added today for iPhone was the background image. That might be the culprit on adding memory usage. We’ll try to tweak that.

I'm sure you're joking, but for those who don't know
Trei is on the SBN development team. You can thank him and his crew for the auto-updating comments and other cool features.
So as you can see, the ads are being looked at by top men.
Top. Men.
If he is the big shot you claim him to be...
… then where is his subject line?
Huh?
I forgive him, even top men forget to zip up their flies sometimes.
That's fine, I'll earn your trust eventually when the ads don't load slow
We’ve been here for five years building this platform, way back before we had ads. I use the sites to follow my teams probably as much as you or anyone else. I don’t like the experience to suck. Our team doesn’t like folks to judge what we build based on the quality of the ads or how they’re implemented. So we actually made it a priority to get more actively involved in making the advertising stuff better. It’s not an easy task, but we’re actually putting our focus on solutions in a space where most people either complain or just suffer with it. That’s not good enough for us.

It's not just the load time.
The page scrolls like it’s on 14.4 dial up.
70% of space is covered by dark matter, the rest by ET.
what OS/browser y'all in?
and what type of computer setup you rocking?
I’m not experience any scroll issues, but I can see an increased amount ad stuff we’re sending down

Neither my work nor home computer are exactly powerhorses, but they struggle more with this site’s ads than any other.

It will be as soon as Urban Dictionary clears it.

Pfft we're not going to yell at Trei
(Psst, hey Trei is there any way you lovely folks with SBN’s brilliant technical team can force subject line use?)
some sites on the network actually enforce the opposite
letsgotribe.com is one example

Any way to make that perhaps a blog specific setting that can be flipped on/off?
Trying to trace flags without a subject line is a nightmare, especially on a blog like this with such high comment/story volume.
Certainly, that's a good idea

Much appreciated if you can implement something like that, would definitely make moderating a bit easier.
Thanks as always for listening to us gripe, Trei.
It's the herpes of ads.

It's not a real story, so it's not pushed down
It’ll stick there until SBN has had enough. Wedged in between an a localized ad above, an ad to the right and below, and a background ad.
SBN goes way crazy with these ads. Pain in the ass.

Yeah, you're right to a certain extent
We gotta find a better way to position the ads and not have it be cluttered or overwhelming.
Also trying to get sports bloggers paid though. All about finding the right balance.

Understandable, can't disagree
We discussed this last time after that pseudo-story ad after the draft. I’m glad this place has no takeover ads and popups or pupunders (except that weird slow-crawl flash thing?), since those scare off readers like nobody’s business, but even with old-fashioned ads it’s a balancing act.

it's all in the "plan"
To get people to buy the app to remove ads IMO.
I would be fine with that if it’s relatively cheap and isn’t a yearly subscription thing. I know plenty of android apps have that option.

the app is free
but does have some sponsorship
I’m always curious how many folks would buy an app to have no ads. We should do a survey.

I'd pay
I usually do to go ad-free. I’d rather pay the developer than make them the advertiser’s b****.

i think a survey should be done
You may find with as many people are on SBNation and how often it is used by each person (especially mobile) it would be a great option.

Played around with it for a bit.
The app is far more intuitive and less cumbersome than going through the mobile site in Safari. Interface is zippy and clean, reminds me a bit of the original SBN 1.0.
will we ever get
