Ask Revenge of the Birds

125591693_extra_large_medium

Hello Seahawk nation! I'm Jesse from Revenge of the Birds, the SB Nation home of the Arizona Cardinals

I thought I would stop by to start up a little friendly banter and of course answer any questions you have about the Cardinals.

First off a little information about how we have done thus far...

Star-divide

It appears that we grossly underestimated Cam Newton as he shredded our defense opening game for a rookie recording tying performance of 422 yards. Thankfully we were able to limit Carolina's ability run which is what probably won us the game. If you follow your conference rivals as closely as I do than you know that our porous defense against the Carolina Panthers wasn't an anomaly as the Rex Grossman led Redskins worked us last Sunday in Washington. Our defense played well enough in the redzone to make the game respectable, but penalties, broken coverage's and just poor play overall ultimately cost us the game.

Thankfully we have some silver linings from our defeat. Kevin Kolb after two games appears to be the real deal. After two games we have already quadrupled our big plays over 40 from last year (4 so far versus 1 last year). Chris "Beanie" Wells has been running like the 1st round draft choice we thought he was and Larry Fitzgerald is, well, being Larry Fitzgerald.

It is obvious that Seattle is really struggling on offense and it appears most the woes are due to a young line and underwhelming QB play. It would be easy as a Cardinals homer to predict a win over Seattle this Sunday, but only a fool underestimates even an under-performing Seattle team at home. But due to the poor play exhibited by Seattle thus far, I do believe Arizona is the favorite to win this game.

Looking forward to answering any question you may have and engaging in some friendly but provocative banter.

Please feel free to stop by our blog and start up your own Ask column!

Definitely

A rookie CB and a second year UDFA CB have been getting picked on. They showed improvement over last week as we played more man coverage but overall they still struggled.

My Question is

What’s the word on PP (Patrick Peterson)

With the D giving up so many yards, has he helped or hurt them?

Live work and breathe like an optimist.

by JRock419 on Sep 21, 2011 11:38 AM PDT reply actions

So far both

His week 1 punt return was the points that won us the game, but so far in coverage he hasn’t been too impressive. His athleticism is apparent but he seems to be struggling in the system and has been responsible for several lapses in coverage. He played better in Washington and should hopefully show more improvement this week.
Though if Greg Toler hadn’t been injured Peterson wouldn’t be starting. Our DC Ray Horton runs a very complicated scheme, the same scheme you guys just played.

I've also felt that he looks better in man coverage than zone coverage.

Correct, PP looks good for a rookie

Between the trade of DRC and the injury to Toler, PP has been thrown in the deep end of the pool and played alright for a rookie.

by Drullin'OverDaCards on Sep 21, 2011 3:12 PM PDT up reply actions

He did show some skills

But was out played by third year Reggie Walker for the last depth spot. He could become a solid roll player in the future but so far he hasn’t look like anything special.
MLB actually has some nice depth to it. Paris Lenon has played beyond his years, Daryl Washington has look phenomenal, Stewart Bradley has improving every week but is struggling in the transition from 4-3 to 3-4 and Walker played very well in preseason.

Pass rush is very weak.

Joey Porter and Clark Haggans, our OLB’s, have zero sacks and 1 TFL between them. Only second year player O’Brien Schofield has a sack (actually .5 sack).
So, yeah. Pass rush isn’t looking good which is a big contributor to why our secondary is getting diced like veggies on Iron Chef.

What about Darnell Docket?

I seem to remember from past games against the Cards that he can be a real monster at collapsing the pocket, how has he been doing over the last couple games? (of course, it’s entirely possible I’ve mis-remembered his roll in the Arizona defense…)

by chin64 on Sep 21, 2011 1:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Dockett is a monster and when he gets going can be a beast and get some sacks

THe 3-4 is really set up for one or both of the OLB to generate sacks which we cannot seem to do. Wilson and Rhodes will likely get a sack or two as well.

The price was high

And at first I didn’t like it a bit but so far I’ve had to eat crow on it because he has looked good. As you guys know well, having a QB is worth a trade like that.

by Jesse Reynolds on Sep 21, 2011 12:24 PM PDT up reply actions

I would agree that you guys should be favored

What is the overall sentiment about the team this year from your fans?

Are people thinking division title? Mediocre with a chance once the D gets straightened out? What are your thoughts…

Also who is the Best D-lineman you guys have and are you at all upset that Alan Branch left..

by Jazzercise! on Sep 21, 2011 12:33 PM PDT reply actions

Most people are pretty optimistic about this team

Especially since the Rams have lost 2 straight games. A lot of fans are predicting a division title, I’m a bit more conservative than that. I believe we will be in the running just because how poorly the West has been playing.

Best Dline man would probably be Darnell Dockett, though he didn’t play like it last week.

by Jesse Reynolds on Sep 21, 2011 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Ok I'll counter - I think Cards are a 7-9 team in the NFC west (which is 2 games better than last year)

As you saw last year, 7-9 may contend for the division title. I think we are a year away yet from being better then that. We really needed an off season with the new qb and defensive coordinator.

To get to 7-9 we need to beat Seattle twice. This is really a must win game for us which sounds strange coming this early, but we really need to build some confidence going into the next 8-10 games.

DD is out best lineman, Brach was not a huge loss.

by Drullin'OverDaCards on Sep 21, 2011 3:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Most fans have fallen in love with Kevin Kolb

And want to drop our Defense off in the middle of New Mexico.

But Ray Horton is the new Defensive Coordinator, and the Defense is young and improving with each week, so at least they have an excuse…for now.

by Skii on Sep 21, 2011 4:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Optimistic

Horton is simplifying the Defense this week two, from what I have heard it basically means going from trying to learn 60 plays to trying to learn 30 plays. It is not just running base stuff, just trimming down how much they have to learn at once.

I feel good about the offense, and now we will just have to see how the defensive adjustments work, but for now I am feeling positive.

Seahawks win in a close one

Yeah, yeah. We have the worst QB in the league and a young O-line incapable of protecting him. However, we have been on the road against two of the best Defenses in the league. This has always been a different team at home and I expect the trend to continue. TJack and the O-line will look almost average against your pathetic defense and that will be enough. Our defense is strong this year and Kolb is overrated in my opinion. You played two bad teams and are very fortunate to be 1-1. Your one dimensional offense will not be enough.

by Cj Klocow on Sep 21, 2011 12:48 PM PDT reply actions

And here we go...

But needed to be said

by Redzone59 on Sep 21, 2011 12:59 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

1 dimensional??

Beanie has 5.7 YPC, 183 yards and 2 TD’s over the last two games.
Also, I would say Washington and Carolina are not bad teams. Sure they aren’t Pittsburgh but they are on a similar level (or better by most analysts opinions) to the Niners. And calling the Niners defense one of the best defenses is pretty dang generous (you watch the Cowboys game??).
Washington actually has a pretty dang good defensive front seven with Orakpo, Kerrigan, Cofield, Carriker, and Fletcher.

by Jesse Reynolds on Sep 21, 2011 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions

I'll be curious to see how Beanie does on Sunday

The Seahawks’ rush defense is the team’s single bright spot, and I’m guessing that they shut him down.

Which will, of course, lead to Kolb slicing & dicing our corners. I’m expecting Earl Thomas to get an INT, but it won’t be a game-changer.

by Buster! on Sep 21, 2011 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep

Wells has had a couple of good games, sure. But you should know better than to write him into the Pro Bowl at this point. He is injury prone, fumble prone and craptastic prone. I’ll withhold my judgement until I see him head to head against Bryant and Mebane but until then, I am not convinced. I also don’t think that the team is either which is why you drafted a running back in the second round.

49ers defense: yes, still one of the best in the league. Actually #1 in the league against the run right now. Romo picked the secondary apart in the second half but that was a pretty incredible game for him.

Carolina is still a bad team. I don’t care how impressive Newton is, he is still a rookie, they have no running game, and their D is questionable. I’ll give you Washington. They are less than bad but still below average until they find a quarterback.

Bottom line, Seattle isn’t that great this year but better than anyone has given them credit for. Arizona is just as bad. Sunday will reveal all.

by Cj Klocow on Sep 21, 2011 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Though I will say this about the Niners

They played you and the Cowboys, of course their numbers look good.
The Packers and Patriots have the worst statistical defenses in the league right now but both are 2-0 so the Niners ranking on run defense… well like Shania said “it don’t impress me much.”

by biju on Sep 22, 2011 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions

I would say Washington, Carolina, SF, and Arizona are all pretty close teams competively

The only real surprise there is how good this Cam kid really is – looks like the real deal and is a physical beast of a man. His stats will drop off as teams get more film on him, but he looks as good as any rookie qb I have seen in the last 5 years at least.

by Drullin'OverDaCards on Sep 21, 2011 3:32 PM PDT up reply actions

His success actually reminds me of Michael Vick last year

Teams kind of knew what they would have to face when they played him (i.e. guy who can throw the ball but is also highly mobile) but when it came time to actually play him for the first time (coming off the Eagle’s bench last year) defenses were caught completely off guard by the accuracy and sheer athleticism he displayed and didn’t have a good scheme capable of countering him.

But as the season wore on and defenses started clicking and they got more film, they were able to get a better handle on what Vick could come at them with. Not that it helped all the time, but they handled him better.

I’m guessing Newton will be similar. Not to take anything away from the kid, god I wish my ‘Hawks had him, but defenses are still trying to come up to full speed and no one has any good film to study about his habits and preferences. I’ll bet that just like most QBs, Newton’s production will drop significantly in the second half of the season.

Hence to fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence lies in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting.

How good a QB becomes is always a matter of how a QB responds once defenses have tape and can gameplan

And I don’t think a ton of gameplanning go into the first two games because of this, but two 400 yard days in two starts is amazing. Now he also has 4 ints and 8 sacks, but most NFL QB’s won’t even sniff 400 yards (Jackson). Hasselbeck, in 12 seasons, has done it three times.

I had to eat crow on him

I thought he was as terrible a first pick as Tebow was going in the first round. Boy did he make me look like a fool.
I have noticed his short game accuracy isn’t too sharp and a lot of his throws are down field to open WR’s. His arm strength and ability to keep plays alive really help him.

If we show life in this game and win, I think it will be an incredible boost to the team’s confidence, especially because doing so will put the 12th man in their mind

by SmartAssCoug on Sep 21, 2011 1:54 PM PDT reply actions

Possible

Washington ran pretty well on us. We shut down Carolina, but so far that doesn’t seem to mean much despite how well they have rushed previously. We were missing our best LB in Daryl Washington, so that may have played a factor but I’m not sure how big of an impact he would have made.
Right now it’s hard to determine what our defense will look like week-to-week. One thing I know for sure, we struggle rushing the passer.

Ginn gate was just a bad and rusty game.

The offense looked a little better and a little more polished against Pittsburgh, but let’s be honest no one expected us to win that game. I am looking for a much more productive game this week. A good offense (Kolb/Fitzgerald/Wells) and a poor defense make for a great fantasy team.

Anyway, I think the only thing Card fans have to worry about is if Charlie Whitehurst gets to play. He will take advantage of a poor pass-rush and questionable secondary play. The Seahawks have the play-makers to make such a defense pay, but not a QB in TJax able to cash the check.

Sounds like Seattle will be able to run the ball until the Card defense figures out that TJax won’t hurt them throwing the ball and then playing to put the offense on his shoulders.

Really too bad for Seahawk fans, because this sounds like a game Seattle could win if CW was prepared and game-planned to start.

He is decisive, and it sounds like his decisiveness would be enough to open up some running lanes for Lynch as well as consistently move the ball down the field.

On the other hand, as discussed in the article above, maybe TJax turns that corner, and becomes equally decisive. That would be great to see as well.

While my primary goal in the world of football has always and will always be to see the hawks play well and win a superbowl (and Pittsburgh to have an 0-16 season) I do dabble in the Fantasy realm.

To that end, with Kolb playing relatively well (relative to hall/skelton) it sure seems like one of those non-fitzgerald receivers could benefit from defenses keying in on scary larry all the time. So arizona insider- who’s the next anquan boldin down in the desert? Early Doucey? Andre Robé?

I mean, who do you think will win the punting battle? My money’s on Ryan.

by SGT Lenny on Sep 21, 2011 11:09 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

Not sure I get this question, but our punter is new and

I would say nothing special. I was a little bummed when they let Ben graham go after pre-season cause he was almost as old as I am am and still getting paid to play a game.

The

punter Is one of the only bright spot on our team, it is the only matchup we will win.

Not necessarily a question more of a “we have this going for us, so there!”

Maybe the Question would be better as. How is your guys kicking game?

by Jazzercise! on Sep 22, 2011 8:34 AM PDT up reply actions

Ok got it.

Our punter is nothing special thus far. So you will win this one.

Feely did miss one FG this year which is really rare. Historically, he has been rock solid. Most of his kickoffs average 5 yards deep in the endzone.

Glad to see this thread has gone a lot better than the last two weeks.

It’s nice when we can have civil relationships with another blog.

On ROTB

These question and answers blogs are some of the most popular.

As Cardinals fans, unfortunately, we always have to keep a lid on our expectations for the team.
Warner singlehandedly changed the perception of this team for a few years, and now that he is gone we are trying to figure out where the team is again.

I'd reckon that it's because Cardinal fans, like Seahawks fans,

have no illusions about being anything other than the step children of the NFL.

Offensive Approach?

I haven’t seen the Cards play this year; are they still a pass-first, push the ball down the field team that relies on big chunks of yards to be successful?

by JerHawk on Sep 22, 2011 7:38 AM PDT reply actions

Yeah, we have been getting a few big chunk plays too

Kolb already has two 70 yard touchdown passes.

Who makes up your O-Line and how have they been playing so far?

I'll keep it simple.

Our tackle play has been bad since, well since I can remember. Levi Brown has been a turnstile and Brandon Keith has struggled as well. Levi does do well in the run game and usually handles very physical rushers well but gets owned by speed guys and of course all around pass rushers (speed and power).
What has been surprising to me has been the play of Daryn Colledge, Lyle Sendlein and Rex Hadnot. As a unit they have played very well. Colledge was suppose to suck in run blocking but so far this year has had some great run blocks that have sprung Wells loose. Sendlein continues to impress as an UDFA and also as a guy who was suppose to struggle in run blocking he has also done well. Most of us expected Duece Lutui to win his spot back over Hadnot, but Hadnot has played well enough to keep Lutui (who has been one of our better lineman) on the bench.
Last week Levi had one of his better games and did pretty well against Orakpo and co. Brandon Keith on the other hand really struggled with Ryan Kerrigan. Which on a side note, Kerrigan looks like the real deal. Kid is a stud.
In the end, most of were shocked that we didn’t pick up any OL in this years draft. Many of us have also called for coach Grimms job as the line has struggled.
I am very excited for this matchup. It will be a great test of our team on the road in the most hostile stadium against a so far solid run defense.

I'll simplify it

Tackles – Bad

Guards/Center – Good

Cards 16 Hawks 17

Our redzone defence has looked good, so we may limit to field goals. We will sruggle, but hopefully the crowd wil lraise our dismal offence (I shall be doing my bit anyway).

I simply canot counter losing, as this has to be targeted as a highly winnable game – otherwise with the Falcons next week we are looking at 0 – 4, which is deeply depressing. If not unsurprisng,
