Seahawks Cut Down to 53
It took them a while but the Seahawks finally released a list of the cuts, PUPs and IRs they made to reach the 53-man roster. Per Seahawks.com:
Placed on injured reserve (3): TE John Carlson (shoulder), WR Isaiah Stanback (hamstring), DL Jimmy Wilkerson (knee)
Placed on Reserve/PUP (3): WR Deon Butler (leg), CB Roy Lewis (knee), TE Cameron Morrah (toe)
Waived/injured (1): DE Pierre Allen (hamstring) (this is the same as IR but Piere Allen has to pass waivers as he does not have four accrued seasons, similar to Konz last season)
Released (20): FB Dorson Boyce, WR Chris Carter, RB Thomas Clayton, DT Colin Cole, CB Kennard Cox, OG Paul Fanaika, DL Maurice Fountain, OL Mike Gibson, DE David Howard, LB Michael Johnson, LB/DE Jameson Konz, FS Mark LeGree, WR Ricardo Lockette, LB Mike Morgan, S Josh Pinkard, OT William Robinson, DE A.J. Schable, WR Owen Spencer, RB Vai Taua, WR Patrick Williams
Colin Cole is a slight surprise though he was making too much money for what he brings to the team, and the FO already showed they don't like that. He might be back once healthy and at a lower salary. Josh Pinkard is mildly surprising since he seemed to be an early favorite for the Babineaux spot. Mark LeGree is the only draft pick from this year to be waived, and not a hugely surprising one, as a small-school project he has a ways to go. Let's hope no one feels like investing a roster spot in him, so we can practice squad him. Mike Gibson has played well as a backup at center and guard, so that's a mystifying cut.
Current 53-man roster after the jump. This will see a lot of changes before game day, as we pick up other teams' leavings.
Quarterback: Tarvaris Jackson, Charlie Whitehurst, Josh Portis
Running back: Marshawn Lynch, Leon Washington, Justin Forsett
Fullback: Michael Robinson
WR: Sidney Rice, Mike Williams, Ben Obomanu, Golden Tate, Kris Durham, Doug Baldwin
TE: Zach Miller, Anthony McCoy, Dominique Byrd
LT: Russell Okung, Tyler Polumbus
LG: Robert Gallery, Paul McQuistan
C: Max Unger, Lemuel Jeanpierre
RG: John Moffitt
RT: James Carpenter, Breno Giacomini
DE: Chris Clemons, Raheem Brock, Dexter Davis, Red Bryant, Lazarius Levingston
DT: Alan Branch, Brandon Mebane, Junior Siavii, Clinton McDonald
LB: David Hawthorne, Leroy Hill, Aaron Curry, David Vobora, KJ Wright, Matt McCoy, Malcolm Smith
CB: Marcus Trufant, Walter Thurmond, Brandon Browner, Richard Sherman, Byron Maxwell
S: Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, Jeron Johnson, Atari Bigby
K: Jeff Reed
P: Jon Ryan
LS: Clint Gresham

Any mistakes? That list sure doesn't look right
If it was, we’re certainly going to be swapping some DL for LB soon.

Would like Pinkard and LeGree too, but glad Johnson won the spot. Kind of bummed Pinkard lost the spot to Bigby though..

As far as poaching other teams' castoffs goes--
When would be the earliest we hear of any moves? Tonight, perhaps?
David Vobora? I did him.
Most of the interesting guys are on waivers, so they'd have to clear out of there and see where they land
But who knows. I wouldn’t expect to hear anything tonight but it’s always possible.

With our young Safety group I wonder if we go after Meriweather
I would like to know the reason why Bellichick cut him but regardless he is coming off a pro bowl year. Would have to be a serious upgrade to Bigby and Chancellor.

Still, I’m a little surprised they couldn’t even trade him. Sure, he made the Pro Bowl on reputation, but reputation means that somebody somewhere thinks he’s good.

I hate wasting roster space on long snapper
Neither center can handle this?
Also I would have kept Fountain or Howard over McDonald. Just because we traded for him doesn’t mean he should just make the team. Being expendable on a terrible Bengals team speaks volumes about his talent. Also do we really need both McCoy AND Vobora? I would have cut one and kept Morgan.

McDonald was going to make their roster as backup 3-tech
They needed corner help (fortunately for us). I doubt we were keeping Jennings anyway, so good trade for us. He provides inside pressure on passing downs that Branch doesn’t. Role player for now, but by all indications a really solid, if slightly undersized guy. I like this pickup.

Just didn’t impress me so much. He ran with power, but not a whole lot of smarts. Holes not hit quickly, not letting plays develop. At this stage in his career he can’t be showing that kind of over excitement.

I agree with most of what you say
but soemthing inside me is high on Jackson at QB. With a healthy Okung and working with his good buddy Rice could make him solid at least. I am open minded about our QB spot but still worried about our OL. I am sorry to say this but I really wish Spencer was still with us.
Respect goes a long way....
I realize Spencer wasn't an all-pro
and that he is a 2nd stringer right now for the Bears, but he is relatively young, athletic, strong, tough, experienced lineman. Clearly the coaches see stuff we don’t, but I miss the guy and wish he still wore a Hawk uni.
Did we really had a chance at keeping Spencer as a backup?
Because TBH I’m not seeing that. I don’t think the Bears really see a lot in him. They see a backup center who is adequate for the role. I just don’t see how he could fill that role in Seattle.

Agreed. I'm still not sold on Unger...
Okung is certainly dominant if he can stay on the field, Gallery has been shaky in pass pro and not impressive in run blocking. Moffit looks like he will be solid after getting some experience. Carp may always struggle in pass protection. Giacomini and Polumbus look like journeyman. Looks like we will need to go after some more OL talent next year in the draft and FA market.
Unger's looked ok, and the coaching staff certainly seems sold on him

A little shocked by Cole
Why not trade him for a late pick? But in general I am perfectly fine with all of these moves. I’m fine with the youth, I’m fine with the line, and I’m fine if we are absolutely terrible this year. In the next three years these young players will grow up in a system and dominate and by 2014 we are NFC West, NFC and Superbowl Champions.

Due $3.75M this year

Just clarifying Cole's contract details
I’d rather have the guy on PUP, especially considering our depth issues at DT, but it could be that his injury is worse than expected, that the coaches want more pass-rush from the position or that the FO doesn’t think its worth ~$4M just in case we might need DL help in the second half of the season.
by Greetings from the Lord Humongous! on Sep 3, 2011 8:52 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm with you - seemed worth having him on PUP
As you say, maybe he hurt worse than we know. Cole was reasonably stout against the run, although he wasn’t a factor with his pass rush. I guess they feel the guys they have are good enough. shrug
Cole brought back later...
with a restructured deal maybe? What he does, he does very well IMHO.

Yeah, it's possible.
But are they going to cut Pep for a better 3-tech, and who is that better 3-tech? Are they going to risk losing Sherman or Maxwell to add an experienced but probably bad corner? They already cut Legree and Pinkard, I have a hard time seeing them lose Johnson as well at this point. The last three receivers are Tate, Durham and Baldwin and it seems like they’re happy with them.
Maybe there’s some offensive line depth churn or one of the three guys Coach mentioned gets the boot, but all of the other guys that might be bubble types seem like tough cuts.

Center from South Carolina who went undrafted last year.
We signed him to the practice squad ) and he was signed to the roster after a couple of injuries prior to the Bears game. Re-signed him as a free agent before this season.
Any info or reports on JeanPierre?
He is a total unknown for me…With Unger and Moffit I would think we have to be looking for a little experience in the interior
Respect goes a long way....
i think josh portis is overratted
we’ve been in love with him because of game 1 of the preseason but i didnt see much of him in any of the other games. i don’t hate the guy, just don’t see him making it to the number 2 spot ever even though its too soon to tell.
He's a UFDA. He's got time to develop at the QB3, unlike the top two quarterbacks we have.
"Beware challenger

COME AT ME THOU FOOL"
Nobody is saying to start him.
People just like him because he seems like a legitimate developmental QB with fantastic physical tools, something this team hasn’t had in a while.
I'm not expecting that we think he'll start either
just saying, even with those great physical, i don’t think he’ll develop like we hope. would love him on PS though.

It's worth a shot to try though, otherwise he's gone and there's no chance.
Putting him on the practice squad and you lose him when any other team can easily make him their #3. Like Arizona.
The FO's fear is that he won't survive the waiver period, that's why he's on the active list.
Bad example, but Zac Rob 2010.

JOSH PORTIS IS THE SECOND COMING OF MIKE TEEL!!!!!
The Portis will lead us out of the shadows, and into the bright glory of the Super Bowl! All praise be unto Josh Portis!
We'd see more of him if Tavaris Jackson
didn’t hog so much preseason playing time. Like Coach Owens said, he’s a great developmental QB that looks like he can improve, unlike the garbage we’ve had in the past.
Even if you randomly think he’s overrated, it doesn’t affect the roster anyway.
The only thought I have about the QBOTF is how big Carroll's smile would be if he snatched Andrew Luck away from Jim Harbaugh.

Portis just isn't accurate enough to be an NFL quality QB, I don't think.
Maybe I’ll be proven wrong, but things like mechanics, they just don’t get fixed in the NFL for the most part. If you aren’t accurate when you’re 22, chances are you will not even make it to 32, but you probably won’t be any more accurate at 25 or 26.

It's not impossible
Hell, I’ve even seen QBs improve arm strength. Accuracy? Sure.
I’ll agree with you it doesn’t happen a lot, but it does happen.

Nah, not saying that it's impossible either.
But I also think it’s much less of a learned skill than people think it is. You probably have a little bit better chance to find accuracy than the aforementioned arm strength in the pros, but not by much.

Yeah this should be in the other thread but...
GO AUSTIN DAVIS GO
"Beware challenger

Overrated. Pats hate him. End of story.
"Beware challenger
Thou hath angered Hawku fan
COME AT ME THOU FOOL"
And the Seahawks don't need him.
Already well stocked with young talent at the Safety position
Not too many surprises
But if I had to choose one, it’d be that they chose to keep 7 LBs.
I've got ridiculous upside.

Twitter: @JacsonBevens
bums me out
that they kept so many lb’s and not legree
Legree never really stood out though in any of the pre-season games
And his value to make the 53 would have been on ST, maybe those LB’s were better ST contributors.
7 LBs, 6 WRs and 9 DBs I predicted a couple weeks ago with Beekers
but things can still change fast remember this is not final. The thing with LBs is they are usually great ST guys both physically and attitude wise. Also, I want to add that Dexter Davis is half LB and half DE.
Respect goes a long way....
By race or by class?
Dexter Davis, I mean— half LB/half DE by where he lines up or what his body type is?
"The time has come," the Walrus said, "to talk of many things."
Body type and ability
Quicker/smaller than your average DE and bigger/smaller than the average LB. So depending on scheme….
Respect goes a long way....
Oh yeah, I forgot you were predicting stuff
Didn’t you predict no way Browner, Maxwell and Sherman would all make it?

I agree
I would have much rather seen Clayton or Pinkard.
by bludevilchief on Sep 3, 2011 10:26 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm surprised that so many people keep repeating this refrain
about Clayton. He was only good against non-starters, and he’s not anywhere near the talent of Forsett, Washington, or Lynch. He really didn’t have a chance to make the roster.

Southern Miss win!
Ugly win though.
"Beware challenger

Biggest disappointment for me
is that I don’t think the (admittedly shortened) preseason really answered any of the plethora of questions that the team has hanging over it.
It all feels very much like a work still in progress (which of course it is but, if you will allow me to pull out a cooking analogy, it looks like we are still trying to find the ingredients for the cake, rather than having it mixed up in the tin and ready to go into the oven)
My football (OK soccer) team in the UK (Arsenal) suffered their worst defeat in more than a century last weekend (going down 2-8 to Man U), I think the ’Hawks are going to be just as ugly until at least the bye week.
Man, that Arsenal loss
The mind boggles.

Wenger's lost it.
He won’t bring in any new players and he won’t tailor his game to teams who, frankly, do bring in new players.

Thing I hate most is other teams fans feeling sorry for you
(which happens far too often to me and my teams)
But then I haven’t been able to bring myself to even read the match report, let alone watch the replays of that particular match.
Sometimes I think I should just give up on sports altogether, but then I wouldn’t be able to wake up my wife at 4.00am when something like the beastquake happens.
That's sports!
As a born-and-bred Dutchie, my team is Feyenoord Rotterdam. Through and through. Even worked for the stadium for a while.
They lost 10-0 to PSV last year. Just roll with the punches and keep on moving. That’s sports!

Congrats to Doug Baldwin
My favorite thing about the preseason are stories like his. I also like that P/JS will cut players regardless of where they were taken (Legree, EJ Wilson). This is the second year in a row we’ve seen it and I love the message that it sends to the players in camp
Apparently Pete Carroll doesn’t like how Charlie Whitehurst holds a clipboard
I'd love to hear a conversation between Lemuel Jeanpierre and Breno Giacomini.
Jeanpierre: Itz zo exziting, making ze, how-you-zay, Zeahawks 53-man roztier?
Giacomini: Oh, I-ah so happy to make-ah the football-ah team-ah. I told-ah my mamamia, and she make-ah the pizza pie-ah!
Jeanpierre: Oui. Unfortunately, my par-uhhhh do not approve of me playing zis, how-you-zay, Amer-eee-can football. Zey insist I zurrender to Coach Carroll and zmoke more cigarettes.
Giacomini: That’s-ah too bad. You come over to mi casa, my mama make-ah for you the spaghetti. We dance and sing and make-ah you feel real happy again.
Jeanpierre: I’m zorry, but (sigh) ze ennui iz too much; I must walk home and, along ze way, insult Amer-eee-cans on, how-you-zay, zeir foreign diplomacy polizees. Then for dinner I shall eat ze clam shoooow-dier.
Giacomini: Whatsamattahwitu? You no like-ah my mama’s spaghetti? I should cut-ah you face! Or instead, challenge you to a go-kart race-ah, and throw-ah the red turtle shells at-ah your wheels!
Jeanpierre: Normally, I prefer to play ze Frogger, but….okay, what ze heck.
Giacomini: YAHOOOOO!!! Let’s-ah go!

Decided to make the Bears roster. Good fit for a demigod with his skill set. I can never remember, is it his possession and wielding of Thor’s mjulnir that gives him power over snow and ice? Or his position as gatekeeper to Valhalla? So many powers, can’t keep track.

I think it's hilarious.
Pre-season superman, completely overmatched against first-stringers. Only Ruskell would waste a roster spot on him. Doesn’t bother me because FUCK THE BEARS

I don't know how he did on a play-to-play basis
but he seemed to have a couple of highlight plays during the 2009 season. Also, he terrorized Charlie in preseason 2009.

…but how is it that he got onto the IR for a second straight year? Is Seattle just going to IR him until he retires?

Into a WR? I guess.
Is he a super-athlete, even in the NFL? I’ve never understood
"The time has come," the Walrus said, "to talk of many things."
6'2" 210 with relatively decent speed
and enough of a head on his shoulders to play QB at the collegiate level. Toolsy.
by Greetings from the Lord Humongous! on Sep 4, 2011 5:03 PM PDT up reply actions
Isn't that rather a dime-a-dozen profile in the NFL?
"The time has come," the Walrus said, "to talk of many things."
In what sense?
Sure, there are a bunch of guys with that physical makeup, but the polished ones tend to be taken. The fact that there are many Stanbacks doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t try to develop (and stake a claim) to ours.
by Greetings from the Lord Humongous! on Sep 4, 2011 10:15 PM PDT up reply actions
We're trying to turn him into a WR, right?
Why is he a better WR project than anyone else who isn’t that tall or fast? Or are people thinking, poor-man’s Brad Smith?
"The time has come," the Walrus said, "to talk of many things."
While nothing is set in stone yet
I find it interesting that three UFA’s survived the cut (Baldwin, Johnson, Portis). I’m sure there are many teams who will have none.
Sorry to see LeGree and Pinkard waived, but hope they wind up on PS. Likewise Konz and Lockette. Happy Maxwell made it, love his special teams play. Surprised we kept 7 LB’s. Surprised they kept Jeanpierre over Gibson. Pretty sure Jeanpierre is Cajun and not french. Happy Pep made it, although I think Wilkerson to IR was the key there.
The next week will be very interesting to see how much more the roster churns. I’m not buying any jersey’s yet.
Niners didn't keep any UDFAs.
Not sure how many they brought in. BTW we are kicking their asses in one week.
"The time has come," the Walrus said, "to talk of many things."
That's all I care about, I swear.
I don’t care if we are 2-14 as long as those two wins are against San Francisco.
The only thought I have about the QBOTF is how big Carroll's smile would be if he snatched Andrew Luck away from Jim Harbaugh.
