Cool

Should make the NWest more interesting.

Much more interesting. Between Fisher with the Rams, what Harbaugh has done in SF and our rebuild in Seattle

I expect the NFC West to be getting a bit more coverage from the national media.

Eternally looking forward to someone making a Seahawks song based off of Lil' Jon's "Shots" song named "Hawks!"

Wow.

We’re definitely an up and coming conference now, the balance of power is shifting.

Most of the premiere young QB talent seems to be in the NFC too

It’s interesting, even though I never cared that much about AFC and NFC.

NFC West rising is definitely good though.

Eh.

Whatevs. He’s going to have to build his team starting today, while we have a good head start in the building process.

I always thought he was a decent coach, but nothing to get worked up over. He’s what I’d call a “Tier 2” coach. Not Bill Parcels/Mike McCarthy/Sean Payton, but also not Mike Singletary/Todd Haley.

Ka-Kaaa!

by JerryNice on Jan 13, 2012 11:21 AM PST reply actions

He took Tennessee to their only Super Bowl.

And was consistently and yearly competitive. He’s a tier 1 coach with a tier 2 profile in the media. Put him in Green Bay or New York or Dallas and he’d be a HUGE name. It’s a monster get for StL, and I honestly wish he would have gone elsewhere.

There are two Jeff Fishers: One with Steve McNair, and one without.

At the same time, I’m sure Fisher’s run-first offense had a lot to do with the Titans drafting Chris Johnson, so maybe the Rams will benefit from Fisher’s running game combined with Bradford’s probable growth as a QB.

One thing is for sure: The Rams don’t look like a Jeff Fisher team right now, and it may take a few years to build it up.

I'm kind of torn on whether or not he has a mullet.

I think if he shaved the mustache it would stand out more but his stache kind of ties his face together.

Is it me, or do The Dolphins seem like they have more fight in them than the Rams?

Trying to figure out why he’s want to take over such a bad team?

by JerryNice on Jan 13, 2012 11:30 AM PST reply actions

Some things are better about the Rams

It’s got a promising franchise players on offense (Bradford) and defense (Long) and a pretty good cap situation. It’s also in a more winnable division.

I think this is one of those hidden factors people don't want to talk about

If you’re considering coaching jobs, the division and likelihood of winning are HUGE factors, because that correlates directly to your job security.

Well, I'm looking at it like this..

Mediocre head coach takes over a team in disarray.

If I were a Rams fan, I wouldn’t be doing backflips.

by JerryNice on Jan 13, 2012 11:37 AM PST up reply actions

Mediocre? Really?

Didn’t he go 13-3 in 2008 and turn Vince Young into a viable starter? Not to mention he kept his job for about a decade. I’d call that solid.

Less than

Fister has shown himself apt to deal with difficult characters, which is a huge advantage, and was a point of stability for a franchise that moved while he was the boss. He’s a good get, for sure.

by Thomas Beekers on Jan 13, 2012 12:53 PM PST up reply actions

He wasn't apt to deal with Vince Young, which is why he got fired.

He’s a fine coach and he has just as much chance a turning around the Rams as any other head coach….but the Titans haven’t had any sustainable success in nearly a decade. Not shaking in my boots over Jeff Fisher.

by J.L. White on Jan 13, 2012 4:20 PM PST up reply actions

He didn't turn VY into a viable starter

He routinely tried to bench and otherwise get rid of Young, But Young kept winning. He picked Kerry Collins to be his starter and Young basically single handedly led the team to a winning record after Collins bombed. I think Fisher is one of the most overrated coaches in the current era.

by William Bryan on Jan 13, 2012 12:49 PM PST up reply actions

Revisionist

Fisher didn’t want Young. The owner kept pushing for Young to start and Fisher designed a system that would work with him. Collins did fine for a season before he bombed.

by Thomas Beekers on Jan 13, 2012 12:54 PM PST up reply actions

And it's not like Young was a great QB without any issues.

He won like Tebow wins and suffered from depression that led to all kinds of ups and downs.

Also, he tried to kill himself.

At least that is what Fisher told me. Story like that’s gotta be true.

Interesting thought I hadn't had prior.

Wouldn’t Vince be a great backup for Tebow???

I'll give then-rookie Chris Johnson just as much credit, if not moreso.

These same Titans started 2009 0-6, even during a season where Cop Speed rushed for over 2,000 yards. The Titans have been very unstable team for awhile now, and I’m not going to congratulate Fisher for that.

psst, you might re-check that date in your sig.

Indiana made the Final Four in 1991-1992, and was a #1 seed in 1992-1993.

(1989-93 were my college years and I remember absolutely everything that happened in sports in those years.)

by Suburban Shocker on Jan 13, 2012 11:59 AM PST up reply actions

Well, I know Greg Graham played from 1989-1993.

So “circa 1992” should be a reasonable enough time frame. I skipped ‘89 because I figured he wouldn’t get much time as a freshman. I know I’m within a 2-3 year window. I suppose I could have said, “circa 1991” but I just know the audio includes, “If you’re not gonna recover Greg Graham”…

Here, enjoy. Oh, most certainly NSFW.

That's some mighty fine forensic sleuthin' there.

They were pretty mediocre in 1989-90 (though still an NCAA tournament team), but real national title contenders for the next three years after that.

by Suburban Shocker on Jan 13, 2012 2:33 PM PST up reply actions

I was in HS 1990-93, so it was right in my wheelhouse too.

I remember Graham from back then, and then simply wiki’d him. That’s why I guessed ’92.

Yep. Fisher loves his hard-nosed defenses, too.

This division is going to start looking more like the AFC North.

Well, I think you're on the right track.

But I’d lean more NFC East, as there is more of a mix of smash mouth and offensive explosions. The AFC North is just smash mouth, aside from the occasional Steeler explosion.

James Laurinaitis is a tackling machine and a top5 in the league type middle linebacker.

We would be a much improved defense with anchoring the center of it.

I've put away the whiskey and the chainsaw and gone responsible. I'd like to say "Danny Kelly made me do it!" but that would be a lie. I chose to shave, put on a suit and tie and pretend I'm more important than I really am...

Having lived in both Miami and St. Louis:

1) Less media scrutiny in St. Louis. The man will have a private private life. Avoid the AFC East media nutjob show.
2) St. Louis fans are likely more patient and sophisticated than Dolphins fans, and will view Fisher as a savior ala Vermeil and Martz (early Martz).
3) Easier to keep players in line in a slower paced city like St. Louis than in Miami.
4) St. Louis is a better city for a family man, lower cost of living, and a better quality of life unless you are into clubbing, hookers and blow.

You would think the coach named Fisher would coach for the Dolphins.

Although technically they are mammals, huh?

Meh. Six winning seasons in 17 years as a head coach.

Color me unimpressed.

Always up for some Twitter action @nandron. I only talk NW sports, though.

by Nick Andron on Jan 13, 2012 11:52 AM PST reply actions

Only 5 losing seasons though.

Fischer is a good coach and a good CEO type that at the very least should get St Louis competitive. I’m not freaking out about this hire, but it’s probably a solid choice by the Rams.

by Nate Dogg on Jan 13, 2012 12:40 PM PST up reply actions

The success of the Rams going forward will (probably) be more affected by whomever they chose as GM.

It’s not like the Rams have had a spate of horrible coaches, or anything….well, maybe they have, and maybe they’ve been cursed with shitty, shitty talent.

It takes more than a bad coach to go 2-14, folks; the guys on the field share the blame.

by J.L. White on Jan 13, 2012 4:28 PM PST up reply actions

The truth is somewhere in between.

He took over a terrible team in the mid-90s, showed steady improvement and had them in a Super Bowl within a few years. Definitely deserving of plaudits — but then he kind of rode that reputation for the next decade. Overall the team was up and down during the 2000s, although I’d say the ups were more pronounced than the downs.

by Suburban Shocker on Jan 13, 2012 1:53 PM PST up reply actions

They were a terrible team?

Before Fisher they had 7 straight winning seasons and playoff births.

Of course, they also had Warren Moon.

Initial thoughts

Not entirely wowed by Jeff Fisher, but I am hoping that this means the dolphins bring back interim coach Todd Bowles who with Matt Moore went 2-1 to finish the season. In that case maybe Moore did enough to convince Bowles/FO he could be the answer and they pass on RG3. All speculative thoughts obviously but I’ll take any glimmer of hope for that guy right now :)
