New Orleans Saints at San Francisco 49ers Game Thread

17 Power, A Seattle Seahawks Blog: Why 2011 Isn't Over for the Seahawks...and Why We Might Cheer for the 49ers
If you're a fan of the Seattle Seahawks, you should be deeply engrossed in this year's playoffs. The 'Hawks themselves may not be in contention anymore, but the contests between the remaining teams have a lot to say about the current state of the NFL and the vision that Pete Carroll has for this team. Even if the Seahawks aren't auditioning for a Lombardi, the model upon which Carroll is building them is.

We are "like the Niners" now because yes, the personnel has to play that way with a shitty quarterback.
But we’re building up better wide receivers than the Niners have, with a good QB, we could be a high-scoring offense in two years. I think even the Niners should focus on becoming more like the Saints, because high-scoring offenses win more consistently. (Packers, Saints, Colts, Patriots)

How many times has "running out of challenges" really effected a win or a loss? Once a year?

Coaches hold them usually
so they can have them in their pocket late game. That’s why they don’t run out often.
But that means they have to eat questionable calls during the game, and we have no idea how many outcomes have been affected by that.
This is something that is handled better in college. Nobody complains about college games going on too long or too slow. And they automatically review any questionable call.

I can't imagine how frustrating it was to be a fan for 90% of NFL before instant replay.
follow @casetines
I hate instant replay
It is so arbitrary. It can reverse some bad calls but others can’t be challenged. It slowa the game down and makes it so you can’t get excited about a play until you see a replay.
by bigtrain21 on Jan 14, 2012 2:29 PM PST via Android app up reply actions
Nuts to that, just get the calls right and let the players determine the outcome of the game.
Hear that, baseball?
They're getting better at what to challenge every year. Not having instant replay would be bullshit.
follow @casetines
by Kenneth Arthur on Jan 14, 2012 2:30 PM PST up reply actions
It is so arbitrary though
Some plays can be reversed and others can’t.
Lets say the Seahawks are playing in overtime and Marshawn Lynch scores a touchdown for the win except that it is called back for a clear bad call on holding. That is not allowed to be challenged so the TD gets taken away.
On the next play he runs it in and it is called a TD except that it is challenged and ruled a fumble instead since he fumbled it just before he got to the goalline. The end result should have been a TD but instead it was changed to a fumble.
All because some plays can be challenged and others can’t. That is not even including the situation where half the time they watch a replay and get it wrong anyway reversing either a good call on the field or failing to reverse a bad call.
Well it used to be that you couldn't challenge if the runner was ruled down but it turns out he fumbled.
Now you can if there’s a clear recovery of the fumble.
Like I say, they’re getting better every year.
Teams hold all of the time and it’s not called. I am not saying that a team hasn’t been screwed horribly on a bad holding call, but it’s rare. And you’re saying you don’t want instant replay? You’d be throwing your glass at the TV three times a game because refs can’t be perfect, but this helps make the game more fair.

I don't think it makes the game more fair at all.
Things are unchallengeable so only certain ways you get screwed are able to be reversed. I watched a ton of football without replay and it was better.
That includes the Testeverde play in which there was no replay available at the time and the Fredd Young Interception in which there was replay but after watching it they still didn’t get it right.
Before replay when you were watching a game an it was called a TD on the field you could get 100% excited because you knew you had a touchdown. Now you have to wait for replay to check it out, sometimes they take it away from you, other times it stands. I liked it better without it.
Still fucking bullshit that NO wasn't ready to play in this game

This is the thing that kills me about the Tebow hype machine
It belittles the skills of truly amazing QBs like Brees. He is so much fun to watch. Wherever he is I will appreciate his talent.
Since when is Brees' talent belittled?
by B0w1-of-R1ce on Jan 14, 2012 2:58 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
Its not that he's belittled
Its that people slobber all over Tebow and he’s at best a mediocre QB. The attention is disproportionate to the ability.

San Fran should be ashamed
I bet all those fantasy owners only picked players from their favorite teams.
Which is just beyond stupid….as is the Steeler bath curtain.
And the Niners only have 20 points off of 5 turnovers?
Not as bad as the Saints, but they’re holding NO up at this point.
Brees
Missed an easy TD on first and 10. The receiver had the CB Rogers beat but Brees threw it down the middle instead of leading him more.

Nice “catch” by the NO player there.
Don't know if anyone has said this already...
but I feel a lot better about our inability to get any return yards vs. SF. Their coverage teams are just vicious. I’ll be damned if the first guy ever flat misses. He may need help, but their first guy is in on the tackle every time. They just don’t give up much on the return, and might just take the ball from you if you mess around with it.

Hmm, how to put this nicely....
DUH!!! :)
Frank Gore is like Steven Jackson-Past his prime and injury prone, as one would expect with age. Lynch is just hitting his stride.
Gore=Shaun Alexander. Big Contract, 2 more years he’s out of the league.
Interesting that they lost Ingram and Pierre Thomas.
I mean, it’s not down to Julius Jones like last year, but they are again thin at RB w/ only Ivory capable of power-runs/tackle-breaking.
...
Wow, thats 2-13 on third down
I mean, defense whens super bowls, but you gotta be able to get a first down once ina while
True.
Whats with the stupid dance all the 49’rs do before kickoff? Look like they all jammin to a differant song.
Sporles sure looks Leon Washington-circa-las-season out there.
You want a big return SOOO BAD, but he just runs into the kicking team.
I know, and I don't get pissed when Leon doesn't return a kick, but....
He returned SOOOO many in 2010. Why not now?
He's like Baldwin... with enough time, he gets open
Brees has had pretty good protection… Lance would have had a huge game
And Pierre Thomas, and has Graham come back in the game after the TD?
