How would you feel if the Hawks signed/ traded for Peyton Manning?
Assuming of course that he becomes available and healthy. This is just something that I've been thinking about the last few days. It rarely comes up on Field Gulls and when it does it's quickly dismissed. I wanted to start a discussion about it to hear what you guys have to say. The way I see it, this team is ready for an elite QB to step in. wouldn't solve the QBOTF problem but acquiring Manning would give the Hawks an excellent shot at a Championship in the next 2 years. I don't think it would hurt the Hawks long term unless it meant foregoing a chance to draft someone like RG3. I know we're building for the future etc but why not do everything you can to win now?

I think it's come up a few times
I hated it and still hate it.
- I want to shed the habit of the Seahawks to be a kind of early retirement home of Hall of Famers. Fuck that.
- Trading for Peyton certainly foregoes the chance to draft RG3. Even signing him as a FA would probably involve too much money, and offer a small “window of opportunity” that precludes spending picks on another QB.
- We don’t know what Peyton’s injury is, but it’s scary. What if he’s only one hit away from ending his career?
- It’s too easy to get stuck on aging, formerly great QBs. We just got over Matt Hasselbeck, let’s not start another fling like that.

He's not just a hit away from ending his career.
He’s a hit away from Stephen Hawking territory. I’d hang it up and go straight into coaching if I were him. Sure, you can still call plays from a wheelchair, but not much else.

That's what I fear too
I haven’t heard many details on what exactly is wrong with him, but it’s a scary spot for an injury. If it’s true that he’s one hit away from that kind of damage, he should definitely call it a career.

I doubt he is
Manning is a very smart guy. If he was that close to something that bad, I don’t think he would step on the field.

It would be worth it to see TJ benched for a decrepit HOFer.
Again.

I'd love him on our team
As a qb coach and talent scout. Maybe an offensive coordinator after a while.
Watching the Seahawks is like peeing on yourself, everyone can see it, but only you get the warm feeling it brings

I'd hire him as an offensive coordinator
To replace Bevell.
Read my tweets or whatever - @SSReporters
I would.
I could totally envision him playing at 80-85% of his past performance for 3 to 4 years. We have so many weapons that he could utilize from day 1. From what I’ve heard about his neck, once it is healed it will be mostly fine, he’ll just lose some range of motion with his head. If anyone can pull another Kurt Warner, its Peyton manning.
Grabbing him also means the Seahawks can draft or acquire a project quarterback like Osweiler or whoever else.
I agree
I like it. If we get him for a good price, take it. why the hell wouldn’t you? You’d be crazy not to want Manning on our team, if he is healthy. Big if but still. If Manning was signed by us everyone on this board would be ecstatic talking about Super Bowl dreams!
I don’t see us trading for Manning cause we’d have to eat his contract, unless we reworked the deal as part of the trade. Either way, Schneider and Carrol are about building for future success, I don’t think we’d give up much to acquire Manning.

What's up with this?
I love the idea of getting Peyton Manning. First, we aren’t going to trade for him. That would mean giving up pieces for an old QB and I don’t see us giving away anything that stops us from building for the future, that is not Carrol and Schneider’s MO. Signing him in FA doesn’t necessarily mean over paying for him. I don’t think Pete Carrol and John Schneider would over pay for an aging QB with the young team we have. I believe Manning will sign for much less than a Matt Flynn would and we could get him for 3-4 great years. We have the receivers and tight ends in place, a great running back, a good defense, and our line played solid under Cable this season. We are so ready to compete for championships but we are still a great QB away from being elite.
Look, we need QB’s. Whitehurst is going to be gone, thank god. We have Portis and Jackson, neither fill the role of an ideal “starting QB”. Peyton Manning could come in here and potentially turn us into a championship caliber team. We could also draft a QB in the later rounds and he could study under Manning. I don’t know why everyone is against this move. I’d rather have a young QB under Manning than under Jackson.
The only problems I see with this are his health, and how much we pay for his services. If he wants too much, I say hell no. If he is asking for a reasonable amount, and his neck is ok, I say hell yes. Thing is, we have no idea what shape he is in. He is one of the all time greats though, if he says he is healthy, I believe him.
If Manning wants to play, then he most certainly will be paid.
Manning would surely get $15 million, at least. Flynn is in that 6-10 million dollar range, in my opinion.
That said, why would paying $15 million a year for 2-3 years of Manning be a bad thing? We’d still have cap room and flexibility.
Manning with the Seattle run game and defense; that sounds fantastic. Bevell would essentially be running the same offense he ran with Favre…old, immobile QB offense with a beast RB. I want it.
I do hate that it would require us to wait on drafting RG3 though. Odds are we aren’t going to get RG3 anyway though.

It would be weird
On the one hand, I would be disapointed that we would have seemingly abandoned the “building” that’s been going on in a shameful attempt to gain an advantage on the 9ers. Also, the neck thing.
On the other, Peyton Motherfucking Manning.
